Having advanced robotic legs had its perks. For example: running. Rae was very good at it. She caught up to the group in short time, sprinting away from whatever goddamn hell beast was on their tail. She was near the front of the pack when the tremors finally ceased. Rae came to a stop, her breath slowing. She looked around at the other teenagers. Some were scared, others frantic with delight at having outrun a monster. Most were starting to dig into whatever rations they'd scavenged from the crash.

Rae put her hands on top of her head. She had a grand total of two food packs in her oddly supplied bag. A hand dropped to hold the rifle's sling wrapping across her chest. Better to save the food for when she actually needed it. A sharp voice cut through her thoughts.

Her eyes snapped up to see Looney standing at the top of a hill a little ways off, calling for Charlie. Rae's eyebrow twitched up in curiosity. Now what would a psychopath need him for so urgently? Rae started walking towards her. Charlie did too, along with some other boy Rae didn't recognize.

When Rae got to the top of the hill, standing beside the boy, her eyes went wide. It was a tower. She didn't hear whatever it was Charlie said before he turned around and walked back down the hill. She was too busy staring at the undeniable proof that humans were on this planet. Or had been at one point. The boy said something, some awed expletive that Rae didn't catch. But it was enough to bring her back to the present. She turned her head and looked at the remaining two. Then back at the tower.

Her smile shrank and grew wicked. Rae nudged the boy next to her to get his attention. Raising an eyebrow, she nudged her chin in the direction of the tower. With that she started walking down the hill, pulling her rifle to hold it in her hands.
Meryn stumbled towards the boiler, a cacophony of sound filling the room. Screeching, blaring, piercing noise that was doing nothing for her nerves. Tripping to a stop before the glowing boiler, feeling the heat radiating off it in waves, Meryn spun around to face the gun pointed at her chest. Her eyes darted around, already trying to map routes out of this situation.

Then her guard, more frightened than she was, demanded she speak.

Her eyes widened. Meryn's gaze snapped across the room to Lily and Emma. When Lily's guard, the one in charge by the looks of it, suggested she just be shot, her breath stopped in her throat. Meryn looked back at her trembling guard. She raised her hands slowly, one palm open and splattered crimson, the other holding Spook's mask. Bringing her free hand to her throat, she tapped it a few times and shook her head. As she did this, she carefully leaned forward just a bit. Her weight shifted to the balls of her feet, her knees slightly bent. Just in case.

Meryn brought her hand down and pointed to her nametag, still pinned to her shirt. She parted her lips and tried to mimic the shapes mouths made when they said her name.

Wes/Likho

Wes immediately tensed when the dark-haired girl jumped back onto the roof, though the movement was subtle under his clothes. He felt a small wave of accomplishment when she seemed to be on his side, though. Or at least, wanted the girl to talk. Wes watched Aya's eyes widen at this turn, her eyebrows pushing together.

"W- let me go?" she stammered out. "I'm a captive now?" Her voice, though still small and frightened, was getting stronger now. Wes turned a bit more to face her, though never letting his attention waver from the strangers.

"The Healer," his voice cut through her, and she blinked back at him, "has been one of the most elusive criminals in the world for decades. He's not on any official registry or list. Only the criminal underground started connecting a string of seemingly random crimes to him Glasgow in the 20s. From there he moved to Germany. Siberia. Down to China. Did a couple of decades all over Africa. The first crime connected to him in the States happened in 1989 in Vermont. No one can figure out how he does it, why, or if it's even the same person." He broke eye contact with Aya to regard the other four. "He kills, but with no discernible target. Steals, but never what's really valuable. Sometimes he just goes in and destroys something. Other times, he'll break in and do nothing at all."

He turned back to Aya.

"Something's been different the last couple of years, though." His amber gaze locked back on Aya. She was marble-still, staring back with wide brown eyes. "He's been using more finesse. He's not just killing people who stand between him and what he wants, either. The Healer has someone else with him now, someone people are calling Cosmos. I don't know how they do it, but they take people out without injury, without chemicals. Everyone says its like they were dreaming when it happened. Cosmos even does solo runs for the Healer, more and more often.

"And this girl, Aya Lynne Germain, can be seen on camera staking out locations days prior to Cosmos' jobs on at least three different instances." Aya seemed to stop breathing. Wes looked at her, this small, frightened thing, and new he had her. Her mouth opened for a moment before snapping closed again. Her eyes darted to the others, before finally falling on Wes again. Her mouth opened one more time, her voice a small whisper.

"Please," she said, her eyes watering. Her head started to shake. "Please, you don't know. He'll kill me." Her words shot through him like an arrow, something softening imperceptibly. Wes took a step towards her.

Aya/Cosmos

Likho stepped forward, and Aya couldn't help her flinch. He froze. Stopped moving. Aya heard what might've been a sigh.

She was so stupid, so so stupid. How could she have let herself be caught like that? She'd thought she'd been so careful, but Likho had found her, and the Healer would find out and she was dead, everyone on this roof was already dead.

"Look," Likho's muffled voice seemed less hard-edged now, more hesitant as though he were trying to think of a way to handle her. "You're not – no one's going to hurt you. Whatever the Healer has on you, we'll –"

But Aya was already shaking her head, eyes squeezed tight. Likho had been after him for close to a decade, and was still nowhere. Finding Aya wouldn't help him like he hoped. He had no chance and he didn't even know it.
In Lantern 10 yrs ago Forum: Casual Roleplay
The gryphon's wings unfolded, stark white in the dark of the forest. Artemis didn't have time to think before the beast took off. With the mask's electricity thrumming through her veins, she surged forward, wrapping her arms around the gryphon's neck.

And then she was flying.

She may have also been screaming.

Without a proper saddle, finding a comfortable seat was almost impossible. Though of course, Artemis doubted she'd have managed it even with one. She'd never ridden a gryphon before. She'd never seen a gryphon before. Long, willowy arms were twined tight around its thick neck, her knees trying to find a hold over its back through her skirts. The wind's frigid bite slashed at her exposed skin. Artemis could feel the way impossible wings moved and beat beneath her chest. The Lantern, Kith, and Pirate were forgotten on the forest floor far below.

And then suddenly the chaos parted, and gave way to quiet. Something changed in the gryphon, the way it moved. Its wings no longer pumped furiously against gravity. Instead they were still and extended, as though gliding. The wind was still there, but not so harsh – it pulled at her hair and clothes without cutting. Artemis cracked an eye open. She immediately regretted it.

"<Hooooly shit shitshitshit> shit."

Her grip tightened even more as she looked down at the forest canopy. It was very far away.

Artemis was flying.

A laugh, half delight and half hysteria trickled out of her. She was fairly certain she was going to be sick. Her grip loosened just enough for her to push her head up and look out at the island she was now trapped on. Pinpricks of light winked at her from different locations. Her eyebrows scrunched a bit when she found an enormous, blackened swatch of land. A tiny light, like a lone star in the night sky blinked in the middle. Artemis pushed herself up another inch, leaning a bit to try and get a better look. Hadn't the frog said something about a forest fire?

"Wha – aaAAEEEEEEEI!"

The gryphon started to dive. Its wings pulled back, almost folding over Artemis as her arms clamped down again. She was fairly certain her body was starting to lift off the gryphon's back, her aching arms the only things anchoring her to it. Then the wings unfurled again, there was a sharp pull up, and Artemis went tumbling off the gryphon and onto blessed ground.

Artemis fell head over heels, rolling on soot-blackened earth. Ash stained everything from her skin, to her ruined clothes, to her silver hair as she finally landed flat on her back. Coughing through the soot, Artemis struggled to push herself up to a sitting position. A dirty hand came up to yank the rabbit mask from her face, in an attempt to breathe better. The gryphon, looking entirely too pleased with itself, trotted over and dropped the staff into her lap. This did not help her breathing problem. Through the coughing, Artemis looked up at the gryphon. It looked back at her, eager and waiting, with its head cocked to the side.

With a groan, Artemis felt her arms give out under her and she collapsed back into the ash.
