Also I am sorry to cause issues but I am not really a sports guy. So whatever way of explaining it would be great. So thank you to those with solutions. It did not take place in the past. So I guess the early game thing or and sort of wacky schedule due to the invasion and other drama would be best.

I would say, after what Eddie Brock mentioned, that the best "solution" is that the game in your post was the Spring game (i.e. the team scrimmages with themselves and the fans come out to see how the team is shaping up to be). The only change you need to make is your 3rd paragraph (the one after the one sentence 'paragraph'). Just edit out the playoff reference and maybe insert something along the lines of the university moving the Spring game up so that the city has something positive to look forward to.

College football programs also have spring exhibition games, usually the first-team offense against the first-team defense. Although they aren't usually until March/April, we could always fudge the numbers.

Gosh darn it! Why do you have to make my argument fall apart... :(

I looked at the spring game schedules for last year (2015) and this year (2016) and saw that the majority of games were played late-March and all of April (and the majority of those were played in April). However, unfortunately for my argument, I saw two games that could support the existence of a game in Lost Haven. Last year, Duke had their Spring game in February 28th, which fits into our time line. Also, this year, apparently Arizona is having their game in early march (March 4th). So both of those dates fall into our late-February/early-March timeline.

Darn it! Looks like I have to (partially) wave the white flag...

Still does not make any sense. From what I can tell, all of the various levels of college football end their regular season in November. The post-season (playoffs or bowl games in the FBS's case) end either in late-December or early January. Furthermore, championship games are almost always held as "neutral sites" (sometimes a site might not be so "neutral" because a team might live nearby). Therefore, I still don't see how a football game could still be going on because if they are making up a regular season game, it would be meaningless because the post-season is already over.

@Raptorman I just realized a glaring hole in your post. College Football would have long since been over by February (heck, even the NFL Super Bowl would be over by our current IC time - late February).
