I want to run a game using the Lancer system. Lancer is a tabletop rpg with a heavy focus on mech combat. The link will take you to a site where you can download the core rulebook for freesies.

Being familiar or experienced with the system is not required, as long as you can read and follow the rules. I myself will be using it for the first time here.

The first mission will be a story I've used before, and it is basically the Magnificent Seven, but with mecha!

McDonough's Rest. A small town built into a long abandoned adamantium mine on the far flung frontier world of Actaeon. It's shelter from the native creatures, and any storm that might roll through. When Earth is years of near-light-speed travel away, and no help could conceivably come to their aid, solid shelter is a must for a frontier settlement.

The mine that McDonough's Rest sits in was set up and run by Alvarez Mineral Imports. At the time, they were a small, ambitious operation that set up many such outposts in planets out in one of the star systems that have been colonized from out of the Sol System. AMI’s business tactic at the time revolved around getting in some place cheaply(and with as little regulation to get in their way as possible) and leaving quickly with whatever they could grab. They left behind a network of tunnels, the shallower ones being quite solid and equipped with worker quarters that weren’t completely stripped when AMI left.

This made it an excellent find when Sean McDonough and his ship full of pilgrims arrived on the planet, looking for a place of their own. In the two generations since McDonough’s Rest, as the town came to be called, is alive and thriving, primarily through agriculture. There are other settlements that they can trade with, but they require a long caravan trip to reach, and it’s only worth the effort for things they can’t produce locally, mostly higher tech commodities.

Recently, a representative from AMI arrived and asked, quite politely, that the people leave so that they can continue their mining. When the townsfolk tried to open up some form of negotiations, it became clear that the request was anything but. They were informed(just as politely) that if they did not vacate the premises by the time AMI’s operation fleet arrived, they would be removed by whatever force was necessary.

With no law enforcement to speak of, McDonough's Rest faces death, either at the hands of AMI’s private police force, or the native mega-fauna out in the wild, should they try to flee. The grandchild of the town's namesake, Patrick McDonough, has set out with the town’s only shuttle in desperation to neighboring towns to find anyone, local militia, mercenary, even a rival corporation, that would protect them, or allow them passage to another safe haven.

A handful of pilots and their mecha partners answer the call.

"Of course not," Faira answered earnestly. "I only wish you didn't feel the need to keep it a secret. Anyway, I'll meet you by the gate."

They parted ways for the time being, and Faira made her way back to the southern gate, where she had left Steak. She found that a stable hand had taken the liberty of stripping his saddle and brushing him down, for which she was thankful. She gave the beast a pat, he was restless being stuck up here when he heard the cannon and rifle fire, and she saddled him with a promise that he'd get some more action.

Her way back to the eastern gate brought her across the path of Acrius and... was that the same girl from before? Well, he would get no rescue this time.

"Acrius, who have you been beating up?" It was only a guess, but she thought it a good bet.

I may have some interest as well.

I'll peek in when your ooc is up.
I see you're doing another, but just wanted to say I'd throw my hat in for mechs in space.
It was a long day, to say the least. From a headlong ride to the city, to the defense of the western wall. When Faira was moved to the Eastern gate, she took a leaf from Merik's book and hurled spears from her position. She wasn't much of a shot with a bow, but could throw spears, axes, and knives with fair accuracy. She was tired already when brought to the war room for a briefing, but made a point not to show it.

Here, she looked very curiously at Zatana. Of course she had seen her at the western gate, and heard the Prince's speech, but this was the closes they had been to each other without the elf's mask. She was quite pretty, and Faira thought it a shame she had to hide herself, though she understood the reason.

"We're not to enter their tunnels," Faira said when the briefing was done, "But what of any stragglers, or enemy scouts?"

She held the record hunter gingerly as she spoke, looking it in the face as seemed to look in hers, with equal curiosity.

Hey, if you don't mind trying to form bonds ahead of time, I have a proposal. My character, Faira, came from an unnamed mercenary group to the royal guard, could it be possible that she was a member of The Shattered Discipline, and knows Calral from there?

Might be she taught him swordplay, as they use the same kind.
The cannon had arrived, and Faira ordered the crew to aim for the catapults, but it was a difficult job, as they were launching from behind the rocks at the foot of the hill. A good tactic, to be sure; the defenses on the wall didn't even know for sure how many there were. Faira stood at the wall, boldly looking out as boulders were launched, and the goblins' crude arrows flew past. She was in a good position to see when the martyr goblins with their explosive payload made their frantic run for the gate.

What? Gunpowder? The implications of this tried to chase themselves around her head, but she locked them down and roared, "Off the gate! Explosive incoming!"

Even as she yelled, she moved. Charging northward, toward where a staircase allowed forces on and off the wall, she grabbed Acrius about the middle, and lifted him bodily as she ran. Her other hand grabbed Rudolph by the arm and pulled him along. Him she let go of as soon as they were moving, but she was still carrying Acrius like a sack of flower, her muscles bulging as the Blood Heat coursed through her, when she jumped over the wall on the city side. She was close enough here that she landed on the stairs after a ten foot drop, her knees bending to absorb the impact. She charged down the stairs, but again jumped from them to the ground when she thought she was close enough.

Manald could be seen before the gate, getting ready, clearly having seen the imminent danger. Finally, Faira dropped her comrade and made her way to join the transformed beastman. She drew her sword as she walked, deftly undoing the scabbard from her belt and letting it drop to the ground.

"Come, guard of Bergkoff," she called, "Show me how you welcome goblins."

She stood firm next to Manald as the gate exploded inward.

Cool beans, and I'm here too, obviously.
Faira was disgruntledly tightening her armor back to its usual configuration, as she walked out of the main keeps courtyard to survey the city walls. She had decided to start with the north side, since it seemed to be under the heaviest attack.

The guards here were found cleaning the cannons with practiced haste. There wasn't much to see beyond the walls, the fields in front were torn and muddy from days upon days of troops marching across it. She could see ruts where whatever seige engines the orcs employed had been dragged to the field.

When the watch bell rang, Faira clutched the side of the wall and stared out for a moment, scanning the horizon before realizing that the attack was from a different point on the wall.

"Gods' blood!" She cursed, turning on the spot and running along the wall to get to the assaulted point. An order to move the city's only four cannons traveled along the wall towards the northern outpost, and by this time she could see the forces amassed below. She stopped one of the messengers and showed him her royal insignia. "We don't need four cannons for a bunch of goblins. Bring one, and your crew with the best aim. Leave the others, each with a full crew. They might be feinting."

She reached the western outpost on the wall, and found Rudolph already there.

"I just came from the cannons, the crew shouldn't be far behind me," she peeked out from behind a merlon. "If the cannon can break that catapult, we may not even need to leave the wall."
