The main thread is here, but below is the WIP first post. The main thread is being updated periodically with more info, this thread will not be.

June, 1994. Sanctuary Hills, Virginia. A small college town, isolated up in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Welcome! This is a slice of life roleplay that takes place in a small college town in a world where magic exists. The narrative is meant to be character driven, and generally low stakes. There might be some adventure and/or peril, but it will not be the norm, and will not be the focus. Mostly this is about a loose group of friends and acquaintances getting into shenanigans over the summer. Magic is commonplace, as mundane as electricity in this world. So while some characters may be studying magic, it’s really just window dressing on a roleplay about the everyday problems of a handful of college aged kids.

Regarding posting standards and pacing:
I have no requirements for post length, as long as grammar and spelling are reasonable, and the post makes narrative sense. Sometimes short posts are called for, and sometimes long posts are inappropriate. Just make sure that it's furthering the story.

I don't usually have a posting order, just try not to post back to back. I'd like to see everyone post about once a week, but if we get in a groove and go faster, that's fine. Let us know if there's a delay, or if you need us to skip you or auto-pilot your character.

Regarding rules: I'm pretty casual, so follow site rules, be respectful, and we should be fine. If I ask for something to be changed, I'll usually allow you to argue your case, but reserve the right to make all final decisions.

This RP is meant to be inclusive, and the one thing I will not tolerate is disrespect toward your fellow players.

Generally well, but I'll admit a little slow. Y'all have probably noticed that my writing time has become a little sporadic.

I've converted from writing almost completely on my phone, to almost completely on my desktop. While this has made my writing more efficient(and enjoyable), it has also reduced the time I can spend doing it.

I expect this to smooth out when I'm writing posts instead of world lore. (it's easier to hop on the computer for a single specific task than a laundry list of things you need to make up).

I'll give you an inkling of what I'm looking to work through next:

I don't intend for this RP to focus on the school itself(except as just a physical setting on occasion), so I've got the important stuff down for it(I always might add more, but it's not needed to launch). I think I wanted to list one more building.

I can always add features to the town after the RP starts, and just like with school features I probably will do so regardless. But I at least want to finish the features that I have listed. Then of course I need to write my own character, and I'll probably launch us then.

I'm also about to open up a second interest check in the general section, as I'm worried that the vagueness of my original post might have turned some people away who might otherwise have been interested.

@Expendable@kalanggam@naomimyselfandi@Fading Memory

There's something else I want from all of you, now that there's a good handful of characters.

I'd like a relationship sheet. If you've never done one, basically for every other character in the roleplay, write a short blurb about what your character's relationship with them is like. You can discuss this with the other player, or just list what your character's impression of theirs is, and then go from there.

"They've never met" is perfectly valid, by the way. If you can't think of why they might have interacted in the past, don't feel like you need to shoehorn something in. And you don't have to be particularly close to anybody, if you don't want to, or it doesn't make sense. Although, this is a social RP, so make sure they make friends if they don't start with any.

Below is an example that's just copy/pasted without context from another RP:

@naomimyselfandi@kalanggam Okay, you're both great! I really appreciate the cast that's coming together.

Phil's Coffeehouse has been added to the opening post(unless you read this post real gosh darn quick).

Just like with computer programming, there can be multiple(or even a multitude) of different spells that would achieve the same effect. Choosing which method you use can depend on a variety of factors from materials on hand, to just plain personal preference.
@Crimson Flame@Fabricant451 Just a quick ping to a few who expressed interest, but haven't been around.

A lot has changed since I first posted the thread, including the opening post which has a lot of info about the world(and has a lot more that I want to put in it).

@naomimyselfandi I haven't read the character sheet in full, apologies, I will before too long.
Magicians hate how magic is portrayed in media.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! I'm imagining she copied the pocket dimension part from somewhere without fully understanding it. This is why magic used to be viewed as unpredictable, because people would(and still do) cast spells without knowing what they were really doing. And then it's usually fine, until it isn't.

At some point, this will cause a problem. I don't know what, why, or how exactly, but it will.
@Expendable Looks good!

I need to know the name of that furniture store, unless you don't mind me making it up wholesale.

I want to make two quick notes on her magic. Firstly, just remember that magic still follows conservation of matter. If She makes an item bigger or smaller, the mass needs to come from somewhere(or go somewhere). But I think you can just kind of minecraft it. If you're making a chair bigger, literally any wood could be added. Alternatively, if you make a chair smaller, you'll have some random pieces of wood left over(probably in weirdly regular shapes, spheres maybe).

Secondly, if she attended school, she's probably had some further education on the basic principles of how to actually write a spell.

In fact, let me expound a little on how different people use magic.

Technically, magician is a title that's tied to a degree. Colloquially speaking, however, the accepted difference between a magician and a witch is that a witch just learns spells. A magician writes them. They understand the principles of the magic, and know enough about the fundamentals of the physical world to know how the magic will interact with it. They know the "language" of magic, so to speak, and how to tell it what to do.

If you're a gamer, it's like knowing how to install mods, vs knowing how to make them.

Though, that might not give witches enough credit. They still need to know enough to make minor changes for things like scale of effect, and specifying the object of the spell. Even if someone only knows a spell for light, they usually know how to change the casting to make it brighter or dimmer.

A little update for all: I'm still hard at work! Unfortunately, as I said I didn't get as much writing time over the weekend as I expected, and I've been busy today. I actually went whole hog and bought a fancy keyboard, set up my computer and everything, to try to inspire myself to write more(for this, and other things). It seems to be working so far! I'm definitely working more efficiently.

I've also started working on a playlist for the roleplay, if you have any suggestions, my only criteria is that songs be from 1994 or earlier(though when in 94 they released isn't important). Right now there's mostly grunge and pop.

EDIT: The first post has been updated again. It will take me a long time to fill in all the details that I want to add, we honestly might start the game before it's done. There's so many ideas in my head(including a bunch that y'all have put there), but I've gotten a lot of the important background stuff out, so people should have an easy enough time making characters that are integrated with the world.
I truthfully did not write as much as I meant to, but there's been some updates to the opening post, now including a character sheet.
@Expendable cool! Deciding what a gargoyle is in this world just became your responsibility!
@Expendable there's a lot of great stuff in there, and our sportsball mascot is definitely the Grim, although I think the school's main sport is baseball.
