Meanwhile, I do it mostly because I don't want to be bothered going into too much detail about my character's family life. No family to speak means I don't have to worry about controlling their NPCs.

Well I finished my contest entry, might read through it again and fix any typos and such but other than that it's finally done.
I'm not even sure what to think of what I just wrote it's one of the most bizarre things I've ever written. But I had fun with it ahahahahah...

Watch Deep Space 9. It covers a four year war between the Federation and its allies and an invading force called the Dominion who've co-opted the Cardassian Empire as there base against the Alpha Quadrant. It's got a fair amount of fleet on fleet battles.
That does sound pretty cool. And I know a little bit about DS9 since I used to have a Star Trek strategy game for my PS2. I remember playing the hell out of that game with my dad. Always had to work together with him because I absolutely sucked at overall strategy but would absolutely destroy everyone in combat while my dad had the opposite problem.
