Honestly, I don't get the grief given to SAO when there's stuff like Mushoku Tensei where the MC actively lusts for underaged girls. And it's the most popular isekai in Japan.

Also, it's kinda annoying going back and forth writing short replies since I got other stuff to do and that just interrupts my rythm.

Just when the wererabbit was about to leave, she froze on the spot.

For the door had just slid open, revealing Takeshi behind it.

Lunatea cursed silently. She was supposed to leave before he arrived, godsdammit!

"Uhh, welcome to Shizuyama, milady. Err, Ayu was taken aside to help with a small matter. She'll join us as soon as she can. " Takeshi sighed in front of you Lunatea. "I take it you two have acquainted with each other?"

"Yes, we have, albeit only for a short moment." She ended with a quick glare towards the woman.

The Nurarihyon then told them of the news from Lady Kyouko, saying that the Inari had a fleet awaiting to attack the Varjan blockade but needed a friendly port or the fleet will get worn down through attrition. She then said she would help the taskforce from the shadows as that was more her thing.

Hmph! From the shadows, huh? It suits her indeed!

Afterwards, she and Takeshi left. Unfortunately, before they knew it, they were alone together again.

"...You know, now that I thought about it." Takeshi started. "Had... everything been vastly different, I'd definitely consider getting together with you." He flashed her a goofy, yet genuine, smile.

Lunatea's face swiftly turned into a cold frown that was strangely accompanied by a blush. W-why must he bring that up out of the blue? Is he mocking me?!

"…You don't have to pity me. I can handle it just fine, you know." She returned, throwing her face away from his gaze. "I'll find another husband just fine. And one much better than you at that," she added with a certain venom in her words.

"Haah…"

Renee yawned, stretching her arms upwards before rubbing her eyes with her hands.

She and Lanus had just entered the mess hall and already some of the other Reavers could tell that they didn't seem to get enough sleep last night. Both of them had dark circles under their eyes and they looked like they just woke up.

Making their way to Bellum, they grabbed their food before taking their seats besides the other Reavers. Throughout the meal, they mostly kept to themselves, though Renee couldn't resist chiming in to some of their conversations.

”Get outta here.” Said Ruecian. ”I knew she was a weirdo, but I didn’t realize she was a cannibal too. AND she swallowed some of the waste??”

”It’s all true!” Lapis said, assuring her brother. ”She did the same thing to some of the Makara. But, at the same time, it was thanks to her that we were able to make an antidote and restore the Makara to normal. ”

”Still though, that’s really gross..” Eve chimed in. ”I’m surprised that she’s even still alive.”

”Perhaps we shouldn’t be gossiping about someone who’s sitting right near us?” Roze said, scolding her teammates.

”Eh, I don’t think she minds.”” Ruecian said, jovially. ”Besides, she probably takes pride in it.”

"I'm sorry, who's the cannibal again?" Renee asked with disbelief.

She didn't need to wait long for that question to be answered, for Scarlett soon swooshed over to their table before pouring a nose-crushingly putrid mixture of bodily waste into the existing bowls, followed by her own puke.

"I overheard you talking shit, so I thought you were hungry," Scarlett says, before wiping her lips. "Please, enjoy. It's hot and fresh," she offered with a sickening politeness, like a mother offering her home cooking to strangers, as she said, "and made with love."

Before anyone at the table could muster anything to strike back with, Scarlett turned and shuffled off.

Thankfully, she left her and Lanus's bowl alone. But it didn't stop the fae from watching her with an open mouth, in complete and utter disbelief with what had just transpired. What a revolting person! She thought to herself.

Lanus, on the other hand, merely chuckled as he took a sip of his tea, finding the whole thing more amusing than anything.

When the beastman arrived, just like the others, she also jumped on her seat when the beastman slammed the cup on the table. She quickly gave him an annoyed look though she didn't say anything, opting to resume eating her bread instead. Apparently his name is Xashan and he just returned from a trip to the mountains.

The arrival of Selini quickly grabbed the attention of both fae, with Lanus quickly sizing up her beauty while Renee fangirling over the fact that the Witch of Chaos herself was here.

She remained silent as she spoke, nodding to every word she said. She didn't really care about the newcomer, having never heard of him, and so her gaze was kept solely towards the woman.

Lanus, on the other hand, did glance towards him. The Beast Whisperer, huh? How interesting. Who knows he out of all people would be joining our ranks? Wonder why a freelancer like him decides to throw his hat with us all of a sudden?

Still, he quickly returned his attention back towards Selini, his gaze ogling her slightly exposed cleavage.

This week, there will be an inquisitor from the Holy Church visiting.” Her tone was now dead serious. ”This is part of their bi-annual inspection of all magus sects, and while we are autonomous we are no less subject. We ask that you all remain on your P’s and Q’s.”

At this statement, Lanus raised his eyebrows. "An Inquisitor? From the Church?"

"That doesn't sound good." Renee commented with an annoyed expression, still holding her half-eaten toast. "I'll try getting out of their way. I'm not good at all at playing nice with obnoxious people."

Lanus had to stifle his laugh, hearing his girlfriend say that. Patting her on the head, he then said, "You can leave all the talking to me, my dear. Still…" He looked back at the woman. "I'd rather not meet that inquisitor either."

The two had a run-in with a Church personnel before. And boy, did that turn out bad.

There’s a young woman who wants to discuss a few things with me.”

Renee and Lanus exchanged looks the moment they heard that sentence. Was that who they thought they were?

The two quickly stood up to follow the woman.

The state official, having heard Renee’s outburst, turned back to face her for a moment. ”Her losses are a tragedy. However, sacrifice is always necessary in our line of work. Those who can’t become accustomed to such things don’t really belong here, wouldn’t you agree. He then returned back to his tent, likely ignoring any further comments in regards to the issue. Rana didn’t respond to his statement, probably used to this kind of treatment, sadly.

"Why you…!" Renee took a step forward, fully intending to chase after the man. Only to be stopped by a grip on her shoulder by Lanus, who then shook his head. The fae girl could only grab his hand back, looking at him with a forlorn expression.

He was right. There was nothing she could say to change his mind.

And, if they were to be truthful about it, he was right. Such was the fate of those who fought against the miasma.

All she could do now was to comfort Rana.

********

On the way back, Renee sat beside Rana, holding her hand with a sympathetic look on her face. Lanus, once again, opted not to say anything. He believed Renee was far more suited to comfort her over him. He might be a skirt-chasing womanizer but he knew when to back off when necessary.

Once they arrived back at the city, Rana was the first to be dropped off. Renee said her goodbyes to her, even climbing out of the vehicle momentarily to do so. Giving her a quick hug, she promised she would be welcome if she chose to join their ranks.

Afterwards, back at the tower, Renee and Lanus climbed down the vehicle after Rue and Rose did.

”Like I said before, you guys did pretty well out there. When another job that requires clearing out monsters and miasma comes along, I’ll be sure to consider you two for it.” Rue said with a confident smirk.

"Why, thank you!" Lanus replied with a smile. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without her help, that's for sure!" She patted her shoulder.

"Thank you for your praise." Renee lifted the hem of her mini skirt as she curtsied, inadvertently flashing a hint of blue stripes under it "I still have much to learn as a magus and I know for a fact that I still need Lanus' guidance in combat."

”You guys are free to do as you please for now, but be aware that we start first thing in the morning! So, try not to do anything too crazy before you turn in for the night.”

”I think I’ll turn in for the night. See you all in the morning.” Roze said, entering the doors. Rue followed not too long after.

Lanus turned to Renee and asked, "Well, what do you think? Should we turn in for the night as well?"

Renee stretched her arms upwards and yawned. "I think we should. I'm tired."

And so, the couple made their way to their shared dorm room. Normally, they each would get their own rooms, but they both agreed that they'd rather share a living space together. As such, they were given a larger room than usual.

"What do you think?" Rana spoke as she unbuttoned her cape, hanging it on the coat hanger near the room. Lanus then did the same with his jacket before taking a seat on the bed.

"Hmm?" Lanus raised his eyebrows while he unbuttoned his boots.

"About Rana." She made her way to the wardrobe, bending over to look for her nightgown. "Do you think she'll make a good reaver?"

"Ah, about that." Lanus smiled, his eyes ogling her exposed panties and behind. "It depends on herself, to be honest. Does she still have the drive to fight after that? Or does she wish to never gaze upon said horror ever again? Really, it's the same question I asked you before."

Renee stood up, a short black nightgown resting on her hands. Using her other hand, she unclasped her skirt, letting it slide down her legs to the carpeted floor.

She turned to face her lover, completely unfazed by the fact that her striped panties was now in full view.

"I'll check up on her once we have a day off," she declared with a concerned look. Unfortunately, they had another mission to do tomorrow.

"That kindness… that's why I fell for you, you know." Lanus grinned, putting his boots to the side before standing up. He then worked on his belt, unbuckling it from its place.

Taken off-guard by his sudden flirting, Renee's cheeks reddened. "Hmph! That's not the only reason why you like me, is it? Don't think I didn't notice you ogling my butt, you pervert!"

"A pervert, huh?" Lanus chuckled. "How about this?"

With one single move, he unzipped and unbuttoned his trousers, letting them fall to the floor.

Renee froze, her gaze locked to the black undergarments he wore underneath.

"See? You're a pervert too, my dear." He walked up to her and patted her head. "Now, let us enjoy ourselves for the night, shall we?" Earning a yelp from the smaller girl, he swept her off her feet and brought her to the bed.

And so, the fae couple did what couples do — make passionate love with each other. They always did it whenever they returned from fighting against miasma. Lanus always said that it was a good way to relieve stress. And to appreciate the fact that they got to live for another day.

"The cows are sort of included, sorry!" Liliana said, apologizing for getting Lunatea's ears licked.

"What?! What do you mean the cows are included?!" The wererabbit replied with disbelief.

But she decided not to push it further, just so to move the conversation along.

Returning back to the temple, the wererabbit had a grim look on her face. She still couldn’t believe what had just happened. The humans they were trying to protect… betraying them like that… was it so bad that they were monsters and not humans like them? They too were living beings like them, with intelligence and emotions. They weren’t beasts that existed only to kill or breed with humans. She might desire a husband but it wasn’t like she only wanted to breed with him! She wanted to do all sorts of stuff with him too! Stuff that a human woman would also want to do!

Once the group arrived, they immediately disbanded. Some decided to go to the hot springs, an idea that certainly had crossed her mind. But first, she needed to find some decent clothes to wear.

"Lunatea." Takeshi greeted, who had now replaced his kimono top with a similar garb. "I assume the others have gone to rest? It was a pretty hectic battle back there, wasn't it?" He guessed.

“Yes.” She nodded. “Yes, it was.”

"You know, you're gonna have to give that back someday." Takeshi motioned at his red kimono currently being worn by Lunatea. "I mean, I guess I can let you keep it. A nice, little souvenir from Shizuyama: The clothes of the Island Lord!"

"I suppose I could..."

Looking down at the red kimono, she realized that from the short time she had worn the garment, it had grown quite to her liking. Sure, the chest was open way too widely for her taste, and the hem only barely covered her buttocks, but the fabric was smooth and comfortable, not chafing against the skin in the slightest.

"I quite like this fabric, now that I've worn it," she admitted to the young lord with a serious look. "And like you said, it'd make quite the nice souvenir for back home."

"Still, for a man to give his clothes to a woman... you might not want that in order to not arouse suspicion... people may start to think we're lovers..." She averted her gaze, a pained look flashed on her face.

"Anyway, I think I'm going to go have a dip on the springs before I do anything else. It's been a long day. What about you?" Takeshi might have not said it, but he would probably indulge Lunatea if she wanted him to do something else.

"The springs... I suppose I can join you there. If you wish, I can wash your back. I need to repay you for your kindness after all..."

Roze would quickly feel the lingering pain from her wounds dissipate as Lanus’s Nymph did her work, the gash closing up almost completely. ”Thank you, Lanus.”” She said to the Fae invoker.

"No problem, my fair lady!" Lanus gave a quick bow with a smile.

"Urghh, you really are a womanizer, aren't you?!" The nymph huffed. "That's it, I'm leaving!" Her body then fell to the ground, reverting back to a puddle of water before being absorbed entirely by the thirsty dirt.

Lanus shrugged. It was time for her to leave anyway.

Ruecian, on the other hand, wasn’t having as much relief in consulting Rana. That was when Renee came up to her, making direct eye contact whilst detailing her accounts of dealing with the effects of miasma first hand. She seemed to be more receptive of Renee’s words, snapping out of her depression for a moment. She wiped the tears from her eyes and began to address her. ”Even so, things didn’t have to be this way.” She said. ”They put us in a position where we couldn’t refuse this mission. But, thank you. To you as well, Ruecian Valeniquen, I suppose…” She referred to the latter with a more sober tone.

Renee smiled. At the very least, she managed to give her some semblance of comfort.

Appearing back at the base camp, they explained the situation to the statesman in charge. He seemed to understand, and was satisfied with the results. ”Well met, I see this Tower of yours has no shortage of talented fighters. I look forward to seeing more from you, perhaps I’ll even have the luxury of relying on your services in the future.” He said to the group. He then gave an apathetic glance at Rana. ”You’ve fulfilled your role here as well, Rana Schuellen, you are dismissed.”

"...That's it? That's all you have to say to her? Unbelievable! You know she has lost her entire team, right?" Renee declared, her hands placed firmly on her hips. What a cold and unsympathetic man!

”You could come to Eon with us.” Roze interjected. ”I don’t doubt that you’d be welcome there. ” Rana went wide-eyed for a moment at Roze’s statement. ”I-I don’t know about that. I mean, why invite me there when-” She cut herself off, her face full of an unknown guilt. ”Nevermind. Besides, that Irvin man is gathering those with exceptional talent and resources. I don’t see why a b-list magus like me would be welcome there…

”We won’t twist your hand.” Rue said. ”But, you should know that Arteus isn’t like what you may think.” Rana glanced at Rue after his statement, but went back into her own world not a moment after.

"Yes, you should come with us, Rana!" Renee grabbed her hands. "The Tower can use a magus like you! We can use a magus like you! Right, Lanus?"

"But of course!" He replied with his golden smile. "We can always use a lovely woman such as you!"

"Lanus!" Renee scolded. "This is no time for your perverted jokes!" Turning back to Rana, she then said, "Don't worry. He may be a pervert but he's a good guy at heart. He'll keep you safe for sure."

"Impressive!" Lanus proclaimed once he saw the monster withstood their attack. "You manage to stand even after taking all that attack!"

And then, he noticed the creature moving for a counterattack.

"Nymph! Barrier! Renee! Brace for attack!"

The watery summon reacted to his command just in time to protect the group from the hideous roar.

”I think it’s better that you focus on killing that thing! I should be almost done here.”

"Very well, if you insist!" Lanus replied. "Nymph! Ready a second attack! Renee! Launch your arrow on my mark!"

Sure enough, right after, Roze recovered from her wounds.

Realizing that she was about to do an attack, Lanus instructed Renee and Nymph to attack at the same time as her.

And once again, the creature was overwhelmed by their combined spells. The wind Icarus summoned combined with ice and water, creating a fierce blizzard that froze the creature to its core.

And then Renee's arrow finished the job, shattering its arms and head in one explosive strike.

"Well done everyone!" Lanus proclaimed as he stabbed his sword against one of the remaining mooks. "Now, clean up!"

It didn't take long until the remaining abominations were exterminated. And when they were all gone, Renee couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief, placing a hand on her chest to calm her racing, adrenaline-filled heart.

"You alright there, my dear?" Lanus approached her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You look a little pale."

"I-I'm fine." She looked up to his face. "Just… tired, that's all."

"I can imagine that." He smiled. "This is the first time we fought something like this, isn't it?"

She nodded.

"Good work. You keep your calm. That's what's most important in this job of ours."

Renee's gaze then traveled back to the creature. To her horror, it was made up of countless malfested corpses. She gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.

"An unsightly scene, is it not?" Lanus placed a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. "This is why we fight these abominations. So others won't have to suffer the same fate those people did…"

Gotta say, Lanus and Renee, you guys kicked some ass on this mission.” He said, complimenting the couple.

”I’m inclined to agree, despite the sudden development, you both adapted quickly and responded impressively. Roze added.

"Why, thank you!" Lanus replied with a smile, followed with a bow. "You two are no slouches either, that's for sure!"

Renee on the other hand didn't feel quite the same as her lover. She still felt quite overwhelmed in the combat before and she couldn't help but feel she was in over her head. All this time, she depended on Lanus' guidance in combat, and without him, she knew she wouldn't perform quite as well.

In short, she still had a long way to go as a magus.

”Lanus, can you heal Roze? I’ll…try and help Rana.”

Lanus nodded, ordering his Nymph to do so. The Nymph does it by submerging her wounds in her water, lessening the pain and promoting their rapid healing.

He didn't say anything to Rana's lament, knowing full well he was not skilled enough to comfort her. After all, once, he too felt the same…

Renee, however, was a tad more sympathetic. She walked forward to Lana, looking at her right in the eyes before starting her speech.

"I lost my entire village to these creatures…" She spoke, her voice barely a whisper. "And there was nothing I could do. Nothing other than hiding from them like a coward." She clenched her fists, her voice shaking. "Even now, after all these years, I still can't say that it wasn't my fault, that there was nothing I could do."

"You may carry that burden with you for the rest of your life. But that doesn't mean you can't move forward as well. Life is a series of misfortunes intertwined with happiness. And you must always seek for the next happiness waiting for you in the corner."

She didn't come up with that speech. It was Lanus'. He gave that speech when he first found her in the ruins of her village.

Thankfully, Skarsneek and Gringor were there to help stop the enraged jiangshi. And judging by what she saw, it seemed there was no need for her to intervene as well.

As the situation seemingly died down, Yurine approached Lunatea and Liliana, who had found themselves near each other as they gathered around the body-locked Hinami. "Don't tell me this is a normal occurrence in your little squad." She crankily told the two monsters. "Else, Takeshi's trust in you is doomed from the start."

"Hmm, I wouldn't say it's a normal occurrence…" Lunatea answered apologetically, averting her gaze. "But it is true that she needs that seal in order to keep her sanity. But don't worry. It's only her who's like that."

Still, upon seeing how gravely wounded Lunatea was, Liliana would hold her sword aloft and...a cow would materialize beside Lunatea and give her left ear a gentle lick.

"Kyaah!"

The summoned cow took her entirely by surprise. And so, the moment it licked her poor, sensitive rabbit ear, she pretty much jumped.

"W-what?! What are you doing?!" She protested at Liliana.

"...Whoops, uh...usually I don't get cows, I promise. Okay, this time, Whimsy, pretty please with sugar and cherries and honey on top, Greater Healing!" ...Another cow would be summoned, licking the back of Lunatea's other ear

"Kyaah! S-stop it!" She yelled to the cow. Her ears were very sensitive, you see, and they didn't take well at all being licked like that. In fact, the only person allowed to play with her ears were her parents, when she was younger, and her future husband, who was definitely not this stupid cow that was staring at her!

Thankfully, right after, the healing spell actually happened. Immediately she could feel her body becoming lighter.

"Thanks… but I'd appreciate it if there are no cows involved next time." She glared at Liliana.

Her gaze then switched back to Hinami, who now had been webbed into submission by her sister.

She then turned to Takeshi, noticing the lilies. "I see you brought the lilies with you, I'm glad that you were able to find them. Oh!, are you and Luna-chan alright?! Were you two attacked while you were away?" Since they were attacked in the graveyard, it stands to reason that the young lord would've been ambushed as well.

"Yes, we were attacked," Lunatea answered. "By Varjans at that. They wanted to think I killed the young lord. Can you believe it?" She crossed her arms under her chest with an angry expression.

"Oh, now you're embarrassed with having your underwear seen?" Takeshi sighed.

"N-no! It's not just my underwear!" She yelled with a blush, her ears twitching back and forth. "It's the rest of my body as well! T-this is the first time I'm completely naked like this in front of a guy, you know!" Showing panties is one thing but showing her bare chest is something completely different!

Not that she had any chest to show off.

"Come if you wish, but I can't make any promises of protection if your body gives in to exhaustion, okay?"

She nodded. "I know. Still, I can't ignore the others if they're in danger as well. I'm part of the Taskforce as well and I will fight to the best of my ability."

"B-but, do you mind if I wear your kimono for a while? I-I can't fight without any clothes!"

Thankfully, when they returned, the others had already finished their fight against the humans, with Takeshi landing the killing blow on the last warrior.

Unfortunately, Hinami had gone out of control once again. And there would be no rest for them before they subdued her first.

"Hinami! Wake up!" She yelled, even though she knew full well it wouldn't be that easy to turn her back to normal. She was looking at him and the wererabbit was ready to cast her tornado to immobilize her the moment she lunged towards him.

Only, it never happened. She decided to lunge after Alice instead.

"Watch out!"

Unfortunately, she was far too much away to help Alice with her problem.
Oof, actually made a mistake with Lunatea there. She was supposed to be embarrassed about her naked body, not just her panties.

Oh well, I can fix it on the next post.

"No problem," Renee replied, glancing at the magus. "You can keep casting and we'll back you up." She fired another one of her arrows, deleting one more unfortunate abomination with the explosion.

Suddenly, the ground underneath her shook. Terribly. She let out a yelp, quickly balancing herself on the spot by shifting the weight of her body. It was a skill most fey would have from growing up as keeping your balance while navigating through tree tops was something that was absolutely necessary if you didn't want to humiliate yourself by falling off.

Before she could let out a sigh of relief, a giant skeletal hand erupted from the ground. She let out another yelp before gritting her teeth, jumping away from it as she aimed her bow towards it.

And, to her horror, it wasn't just a skeletal hand.

The full set of bones now stood in front of her. It called upon its abhorrent brethren, summoning more and more of the creatures from before.

"Stand back!" Lanus yelled to Renee. "Let me handle the small fries! You focus on taking out the big guy!"

The female fae nodded, a panicked look displayed on her face. She jumped backwards, flashing her panties as her skirt flipped upwards. Lanus' perverted eyes didn't miss the show for he was all too familiar with the many in combat pantyshots she would give, being her partner at all. Still, even as he ogled her, he wasn't distracted in the slightest. One of the creatures tried to ambush him, only to receive an upward slash from his sword that sliced it into two. And he did it without even looking at it.

"Nymph! Don't let them surround us!"

"On it, Master!"

The summoned spirit would then aid the group by creating a defensive line that the abominations couldn't pass. If they did, they would be erased by her water in an instant.

However, it was clear as day that they were slowly but surely being overwhelmed. The wave of abominations wouldn't stop. Not to mention Rose with her wound, a terrible thing to have in a miasma-infested place like this.

”Funny, pretty sure this fucker wasn’t in the report that we received.” Ruecian spat at Rana. ”I-I’m sorry! I swear to you, that thing wasn’t here before. I have no idea what that thing even is!!” She exclaimed.

"Ladies, don't fret!" Lanus flashed them a grin. "We'll make it out of here for sure!"

He knew that this was the exact situation he warned of before they got here. But there was no point in saying "See, I was right!". It wouldn't make their situation any better.

Thankfully, he did have a plan for this. Though it seemed Rue had his own plan on the ready.

"A combined attack. I like it!" He smiled at him. "Rana, need any assistance in healing her?" He switched his glance towards the two. "My Nymph can heal wounds too, you know."

Channeling azure mana around him, Rue began to conjure a shape beside him. The shape then became a large, blue serpent that was larger than the summon that Roze had called forth. ”Mizuchi to me!” He called out. ”Sublimate them.” He coldly said. His summon began blasting a large volley of icy breath at the skeletal beast and its disgusting minions, signaling for the couple to join in. Hopefully, their efforts would be enough to give Rana time to treat Roze’s wounds.

Nymph quickly joined in the assault, firing off high pressure water towards the skeletal beast. It pierced through its minions before hitting the big guy himself.

Renee, on the other hand, fired her arrow on an overhead trajectory, skipping past the minions, landing right on top of the giant skeleton with a loud boom.
