Battle in the Desert BGM

A stinging pain suddenly enveloped Kuroi's shoulder just as he was engaged by the rapier-wielding elf. With no time to curse himself for his cocky behavior, he let the elf come in close for a stab to his abdomen. Just as the blade was about to turn him into a shish-kebab, the Vulpine parried the blade late, allow it it to graze his side so he could get into his opponent's guard. Having only moved forward after taking a glancing blow to the left side of his abdomen, Kuroi thrust his knife directly into the side of the elf's neck. Regardless of whether or not he had been successful, he quickly turn around and stepped out of the crossbowman's aim. If his knife was still dug into the elf's neck, then he used her as a body shield of sorts from both of the ranged fighters.

"Alright, alright, I've given two of you free blows and they've gone to waste. Come on and stop hiding with your tail between your legs!" exclaimed Kuroi, keeping the elf's body close to him (if he still had ahold of her, that was). He kept his fan drawn for offense, keeping it near his head to have at least some sort of minimal protection against any projectiles. He glanced at however many enemies remained, making sure to stay vigilant as he ignored the searing pain in his should. Kuroi would definitely have to check for poison in his system after this altercation.

Battle in the Desert BGM

The vulpine's ears perked up as he heard the idiotic feline demihuman call out from behind him. Letting out a sigh, he let his foxy friend slide into his satchel before dropping it on the ground next the Uzul. Turning to meet their pursuers, Kuroi drew two of his weapons and readied himself for combat. In his right hand he held a razor sharp metal fan, whereas in his left, he held a throwing knife tightly. Witnessing the quick bickering among the five, he did not react until a whip was lashed out at him.

"Uzul! Take a couple of them and I'll take the rest!" He exclaimed as he spun into the whip that came flying at him.

Angling his fan perfectly, Kuroi deflected the whip coming straight at him, leaving him unharmed. Upon finishing his rotation, he instantly threw out one of his knives at the snake demihuman whom had attacked him. Quickly peering at the other four attackers, Kuroi began to backpedal away from them, not letting any of them get any more advantages on him and Uzul. As soon as he saw the pale orc rushing at them on all fours, Kuroi jumped back and pulled out another throwing knife.

"...This is going to be interesting...five fighters...each weak on their own lest they'd be able to take me. Let's see what you all got..." pondered Kuroi aloud before scoffing.

Kuroi planted his foot into Uzul's hands, looking around the area once more at the ground's level before being launched up into the air. As he flew upwards into the air, he spread his arms outwards to create some sort of drag once he would begin to descend. Kuroi's vulpine eyes quickly took note of their surroundings, able to pierce through the darkness of that enveloped them. Turning his head and inspecting as meticulously as his time in the air allowed, one of his arms stretched outwards towards two rapidly fleeing figures in the sands. Atop one the two figures' shoulders were their victims - the two women of noble blood.

Gravity begun to take effect shortly thereafter, causing Kuroi to plummet towards the ground. Tucking his body into a ball, he leaned forward and flipped twice forward before extending his body once again. Loosening up his body, he stuck out an arm towards the nearing sands and leaned forward. With inhumane timing and precision, the vulpine used the momentum to break his fall and roll forward, causing sand to splash everywhere around him. A small grunt of pain came from him as would anyone who fell from such heights. But there now stood Kuroi, brushing off his garments before looking over at Uzul. Pointing in the direction of the two kidnappers, he spoke, "They're that direction and their steps are fast. Alert the other two...be ready to shed blood, Uzul."

Before the orc could even respond, Kuroi darted off in the direction he pointed towards, wanting to close as much distance as possible between him and their newly found targets.

Up until the group had set up camp for the night, Kuroi had kept solemn silence throughout their journey. Only when he was talked to or commented on would Kuroi make any sort of remark or reaction. As the entire group came together to decide who would be on first watch, the Vulpine was very vehemently against allowing both of the princesses take watch for the night. This had been the loudest and most spoken he had been for the past day or so also. To allow such important individuals to take on the job of a night guard was inane in his eyes but alas, it seems neither of them would have it. It was at this point in time where Kuroi had a thought he didn't even have regrets for having - both Rosaria and Mikazuki were being utterly stupid.

Much to his disdain, Kuroi simmered down in one of the tents that had been brought along for the trip. His head pointed towards the entrance of the tent as he lied down to rest. As eyes grew heavy, so did the guilt of not forcing Mikazuki to sleep in place of him. This was a bad idea - a really bad idea.

And the fact that such an idea bore rotten fruit was not something that surprised him at all. Kuroi's eyes instantly shot open when he heard Mikazuki let out a loud scream. Having fallen asleep with his travelling clothes on, he was the first to exit the tent...as well as the first to realize they were too late in stopping an abduction. An audibly angry growl left Kuroi's face as he met eyes with the other bodyguard, Jomari, and Uzul. His bare, exposed face was one wrought with annoyance and worry, but such emotions did not overtake his logic nor his body. After familiarizing himself with their communication system, he nodded and watched the two run off before looking up at Uzul. "Do what you will. My eyes are your's, new friend."

Kuroi had mostly kept to himself throughout much of their journey so far. Sure, he had situated himself next to the princess but he didn't do much more than that. He acknowledged the others' words when they spoke to the group as a collective, replying with a quick nod. The fox mask he donned helped keep much of the sand out of his face. Occasionally, a grain of sand would slip into the small slits which he saw out of but no discomfort ended up being derived from it. There were times when he would feel someone's gaze fall upon him, causing his ears to flicker to and fro before returning to their calm, motionless state. Up until the princess had approached him, Kuroi hadn't spoken a single word to anyone, not even the princess.

He wasn't angry, per se, merely pondering about the recent events that had happened. He was vigilant but also very relaxed. After all, one's martial prowess excels when both the mind and body are calm.

When he was spoken to by Mikazuki, one of his ears turned towards her to show attentiveness, shortly followed by a turn of his head to meet her eyes. Kuroi stayed quiet as she spoke to him, letting her speak her apologies and her justifications for dragging him along their perilous journey. A small chuckle came from him as she apologized to him - he definitely hadn't signed up for this but it was hard for him to feel any negative feelings towards his student. There was definitely annoyance that their planned training session had evolved into a journey across the desert but all Kuroi could do was go with the flow. A small sigh escaped his mouth as he formulated his response, a couple of minutes passing before he finally spoke.

"I am not angry, Princess. Even if something were to happen that would affect me on a more individual level, I am merely doing my duty. I am to serve, to train, and to protect. I admit that I expected everything to go as planned but given your status as one of royal blood, I am also not surprised that things turned out the way they did. I appreciate your gratitude, princess. I am deeply honored."

Just like the rest of his demeanor and person, his voice was relaxed. Ears that listened to Kuroi would be able to detect no sort of negative emotion from him in the slightest.

"Although...we best start training you once we are able to settle down for a day or so. That was my original responsibility and I intend to keep it. A protector's job is to keep you safe, and by teaching you what I know, your safety will only be further assured. Do not worry about coin right now, either~." continued Kuroi, his last few words being that of a jest. A small chuckle came from Kuroi before he returned to momentary silence, awaiting the princess' reply.

It was much unlike Kuroi to sleep in so late, and much unlike him to be fashionably missing from an important restaurant date. Poor Slick, he could only hope he had found a date. When the Vulpine stirred from his slumber, it had been at an ungodly hour. Sudden fatigue brought upon him by stress had overtaken him to such slothfulness. Blinking, he attempted to remember his dream from the night prior. It had been one of him living a different life - a life where he was a feline, not a fox. A life where he had found himself chasing after the heart of a black and red haired cat woman while he pursued the same aspirations he did in Avalia.

It was a lovely dream. He could only wish his subconscious would allow him to revisit it some time. Ah well, onto the rest of the day...

By the time Princess Mikazuki had come to fetch him, Kuroi was already in a deep, apologetic bow by the time she opened the door to his room. He truly was beyond flustered and shameful for allowing exhaustion to overtake him so. After many apologies and what he deemed were excuses, he followed the princess to rent two camels before setting out on their trip across the dessert.

Although Kuroi had been unaware of the specifics that had happened during his absence, he was well aware of the main events that had transpired up until now. Surrounded by companions, new and old, Kuroi continued to take on the role of protector. The Vulpine dared not stray too far from the princess, doing so would further shame him. For the first few minutes or so, he found himself struggling to walk across the dunes for so long. It was rather annoying but he eventually adapted to the terrain. A small sigh came from him as his eyes looked around at the party. At his side within arm's reach was the princess - the woman whom he was most acquainted with. Not too far from him was an orc who went by the name of Uzul.

Although he had never seen him before, if Mikazuki could place trust in him, then so could he...to some degree. At some point, the Vulpine's eyes locked onto the orc's. Were it not for the fox mask he wore to shield himself from the winds and sand, he likely would have come across as more personable to the strangers. For now, he came off as a faceless fox mask-wearing Vulpine to the many strangers who accompanied him.

Hm. A Vulpine wearing a mask fashioned after a fox. How humorous.

He looked forward to fighting alongside him if the need ever arose. Then, his gaze turned towards Rosaria and her bodyguard. Like any uneducated man would know, royalty was gracing his presence. Accompanied by her bodyguard as all royalty should, no less. He may have not known her personally but to have a politically powerful ally alongside them helped him.

Finally, there was a man who went by the name of Jomari. From what he could reckon, he was another human. The group that originally started out as him, the princess, and Slick had now more than doubled in size. This journey was certain to be an interesting one.

As he had been doing since the beginning of their journey, Kuroi stayed mostly silent throughout. His eyes kept switching between the path before him and his companions. As always, the Vulpine had a watchful eye.

"Hum...I'm not entirely sure, really. Despite my connection to her and my mother, I tried to stay far away from politics as much as possible. Unfortunately, given the position I was in and am currently in, I haven't had the luxury to stay true to those words..." He responded before gulping down more of his water.

Once the conversation was over, he let out a small sigh and began to coddle his pet fox. He attempted to speak to his new pet again only to receive no response. Well, what could he expect from a baby fox?

Kuroi kept waiting for the bartender to bring over him and Slick's meals, occasionally glancing over at the man and then over at Slick. The Vulpine hadn't paid much attention to anyone other than the man in charge of bringing him a meal, his fennec fox, and the human who sat next to him. He was quite aware of his surroundings at the moment, just overall unconcerned. He could only hope he'd be able to enjoy a good meal without any attempts of drugging him or physical encounters.

Kuroi's eyes never parted from Slick as the two conversed. What the human was saying was greatly interesting to him. He nodded in agreement about the many similarities humans and life in Avalia shared - after all, both of them were pretty similar in looks and mannerisms overall (for the most part, anyway). What surprised the vulpine more was how different human society was to Avalian society. A lack of hygiene? Bigger language barriers? Inter-human racism? Paper money? It was rather bizarre, really.

As the two spoke, the bartender finally laid out a nice fresh mug of water for Kuroi to drink from. It seems like it would still be a while until the two got their food too. It was quite busy at this time of the day. The fox finally spared a hand to grab onto his mug, quickly bringing it to his mouth to down as much as he good in one gulp. "Ahh...much better..." sighed Kuroi in relief.

He looked back over at Slick and tilted his head at him, pondering his question a bit before answering, "Well...I imagine our female companion shall be joining us rather soon. After we get some grub and avoid gods know how many more fights we need to, we need to get on our way to the Sun Elves. She has to speak with some rather important individuals there..."

The vulpine kept petting his new pet as his eyes stayed fixated on Slick. His ears twitched every few seconds and his head was tilted on the man - it was clear that Kuroi was fully invested in the man instead of the fox. Not once did Kuroi bother to look away unless it was to shoot a quick glare at anyone trying to say or do anything to his beloved fox.

Once Slick finished answering Kuroi to the best of his ability, he immediately responded, "I see...you're the only...I've really encountered..."

Kuroi kept being careful with his words, not wanting to alert anyone that there was a human under everyone's noses. "I suppose if we encounter any others, I'll have to see how true that statements holds up..." he sighed before glancing over at the bartender who was taking others' orders. Kuroi's eyes shot back to Slick and tilted his head at him once more, "Guns? We do have them but they're rather expensive. I have some experience with them but I'm not that good of a shot, personally. Besides...it's easier to just walk up to someone and snap their neck..."

Regardless of how severe the act of jerking someone's neck at an unnatural angle, Kuroi noted this with a calm, casual tone. Such things didn't faze him nor did he really find any issue in talking about such things as if they were normal. Something to keep in mind. "Anything more you can tell me?" asked the vulpine once more.

Kuroi stayed quiet as he let Slick lead the way to the nearest tavern or inn. Most of his time was spent coddling the baby fennec fox. He attempted to communicate with it a little bit but couldn't understand more than a few squeaks. All he could gather was that the fox had already accepted the vulpine as his owner. Perfect. This fennec fox was his son now, there were no two ways about it. As the human and vulpine walk into the bar, Kuroi casually plops himself down next to his new companion and sets the fox down on his lap. He glared at anyone that dared to try and complain or say anything about the animal he had brought into the establishment.

"I'll take some fire-roasted chicken with a mug of fresh water. a little bit of minced fish would also be appreciated for the little guy..." he said, holding up his pet.

He was met with a glare from the bartender but not refuted at all. The bartender nodded at him and at Slick before going off to take more orders. As Kuroi placed the fox back down on his lap, he looked over at Slick and began to initiate conversation in a rather hushed tone, "So uh...tell me how it is back where...you come from..."

The vulpine did his best to stay rather vague in his questioning. After all, the last thing that Kuroi and Slick needed were any physical encounters that would ruin a delicious meal.
