That feeling when you have a new character bouncing around your brain, dying to get out.

Greetings friends, partners, enemies, acquaintances, and strangers. I am Kassarock, or just Kass if you prefer, welcome to my profile. Anyway, I am a 30 year old male roleplayer from the UK and a long time user of the site, although I have come and gone a fair bit over my time here. I used to be more active on the old site, and I still am relatively active in the off topic sections today, as well as in the guild's discord. So you might see me around.

I generally consider myself to be an advanced writer, I pretty much always write multiple paragraphs, and will drop walls of text if the mood takes me. My grammar is okay, but not formally perfect, so I do not expect that from my partners either. I normally like quite dark and dramatic themes in terms of content in my roleplays, regardless of genre. Unless I have got an interest check up, or have messaged you, I am not usually looking for new partners to write with.

I think that covers just about everything. Message me if you want to know more.

Just finished - Circe by Madeline Miller - A follow up to 2011's Song of Achilles, this time a retelling of the Odyssey and some other Greek Myths all the point of view of the goddess Circe. Richer themes, deeper thoughts, and more deft narrative weaving than SoA, but perhaps lacking the same level of emotional pathos.

Just started - Confessions of a Sinner by St. Augustine of Hippo (translated by R.S. Pine-Coffin) - Augustine's account of his sinful youth and conversion to Christianity. Broadly considered to be one of the first autobiographies written by a Western author.
So bit of a weird one, but does it bother anyone else how many people make their characters taller on average in RPs? Especially true of historical/low fantasy RPs. Its the middle ages and no one's getting proper nutrition and we've got a band of 10 6ft+ people wandering around the countryside.

In regards to my own diversity in roleplaying, I like to think I'm not too bad, I am however sometime of a sucker for a tragic backstory, but generally stay away from having my characters be orphans these days.

I definitely fall into using tropes and archetype, but normally that's a starting point for the C.S. and when I think about the character a bit more, I like to plan how they will journey away from that archetype over the course of the RP. Normally I like to think of this in some kind of emotional journey spurred by their bonds with the other characters, but sometimes its more of an existential one. I like characters who are living without purpose or meaning to find one, or characters driven by particular goals to become disillusioned to them and abandon them. Unfortunately, roleplays rarely last long enough for these changes to happen fully.

There are really only two examples I can think of where I have done this to my satisfaction. One was where an angry, but dutiful and honour bound individual was continuously vacillating between his duty, his anger, and his growing bond with the party. Unfortunately his life was slowly also being consumed by a degenerative disease that left its sufferers feral empty shells of themselves (this was a GM plot device, not my own). It got the point where after years of playing him, my character broke, tried to kill the fellows he had cared for, and was killed in turn by the party leader, which forced an arc of change and growth on them.

The other was a 1x1 I did about a embittered and cynical assassin who ends up falling in love with one of his targets and through this starts to see the good in the world again. He ends up becoming a better, more caring person, but he never loses that ruthlessness and darkness at his core. He pursues better ends for the world at large, but also his own power, becoming something of a spymaster and power behind the throne. He is never fully redeemed, but neither he is completely lost.

I like to think I'm not bad when it comes to diversity in ethnic, sexual, and disability. I don't often do modern day/real world RPs, but when it comes to fantasy I've had plenty of characters who would be considered Black, Middle Eastern, or South Asian if they existed in our world. I like to put in a lot of character with different sexual orientations, frequently including gay subplots. Right now I'm playing an asexual and a character who's either going to be bisexual or lesbian. My favourite gay character was a homosexual, cross dressing Dwarf from a conservative and isolated Dwarven city state, who through nepotism had secured a place as an ambassador away from his own people in a much more cosmopolitan society. I once played a character who was mute as a challenge to myself, as well as a character missing a leg, and various others missing one eye, fingers etc.

When it comes to the issue of attractiveness, yes I have attractive characters, but I also had plain characters, and I have a few very ugly characters. But my favourite to play it comes to this are attractive characters who have been marred or made uglier. One of my currently characters is a petite and effeminately pretty man, apart from a truly horrible scar he has down one side of his face, like difficult to look at level of scarring. I had a character who never showed his face once over the course of an RP, he wore a veil the entire time.

The only area I consider myself really quite bad at is writing female characters.

I've maybe done like 2 or 3 that I can recall? Out of what must be getting on towards 50, or maybe more characters I've made over 11 years both on here, old guild, and other sites. Its mainly because I don't feel as confident writing in a female voice, but I'm consciously trying to address that this year as a sort of new years resolution. I'm gonna force myself to write with gender parity in my characters for the rest of the year. If I make a male character, the next character I make must be female.

This might seem contrived, but I want to improve in writing and I often like setting challenges for myself when it comes to characters. As someone else already said it, limitations breed creativity.
@Bazmund I'm pretty sure you're good to play a blue stripe, this is set between the first and second northern war so Foltest is still alive and well and the blue stripes are still a thing.

The Chase

Karlus knew something was wrong as he pelted away from the dockside tavern and made his way north, deeper into the city. It wasn’t fading. The pulling in his skin and in his mind would not fade even as legs worked furiously to carry him from its influence. The burn of the erasure ward felt almost just as strong here at the end of the narrow alley as it had when he had entered it. No matter. There would be somewhere free of it. There must be somewhere free of it.

He jumped a pile of detritus and scanned the escape routes before him. The alley itself had been meagre pickings, buildings either full of people or tightly boarded shut. He thought he heard whispers behind the planked doorways slashed with painted red crosses. He thought he saw people watching him from narrow half shuttered windows above. Nowhere to hide. Nowhere to disappear.

The alley opened onto a market square of sorts, a gap between the favelas and slums that grew behind the warehouses and sailor swarmed taverns had lined the quays. Just enough room to from the canals to snake in and to be able to see the sky again, the flutter of coloured flags on the breeze. The market itself made a poor sight, there were few open stalls, and no customers to speak of. More boarded up doors, more red crosses marking them. Still puddles of dirty water sitting over the cobbles.

The ward did not fade. In fact he could feel it now, from the other side of the square, the unmistakable pull of another erasure ward. Karlus realised with a small degree of horror that they must be littered across the entire city. Just what was going on Caracas? Where were the people? What had the League of Magi done?

“Signora,”

Enough to stir him from his thoughts was a voice calling out from just beyond the alleyway. It was there that Karlus saw one of the guards from the tavern. The young soldier hesitantly made his way across a small bridge which hung to the left of the marketplace; marrying it to the docks the mage had only just escaped. Karlus could only just make out the shape of an elderly woman tending to a small stand that was propped up by crates, and adorned with torn fabrics. The guard approached her with a sort of cautious naivete not surprising for someone of his age and demeanor.

“Signora, sto cercando un magus, capelli chiari e bianchi. È un fuggitivo dalla legge.” The guard approached the woman as he finally dug up the courage to sheath his weapon.

“E? De se katalavaino,” the woman questioned in a sort of throaty drone.

“Apologies signora, do you speak the common tongue? I’m looking for a mage of modest size and stature. He is pale and light of hair. We believe him to be dangerous. He must be captured. Have you seen anyone of that description? He must be here somewhere." Karlus’s view of the conversation was somewhat obscured, but he could see the woman shoo the guard away.

“E? Írthate edó gia na agorásete káti í óchi,” she questioned again growing more impatient this time.

The guard has his back turned to him, Karlus saw his chance and he took it. He pulled his cloak tight around him and threw the hood up to hide his face as he emerged from the alley. Tacking left along the edge of the market square, Karlus made for the small bridge that the guard had crossed over, he hoped the guard would not double back to more thoroughly search the area that he had already passed through.

The guard still seemed too preoccupied in frustrated conversation with the vendor to notice Karlus. His back was turned towards the woman. However, the vendor could see the mage skulking in the distance. A quick glance away from her interrogator and towards Karlus was enough to make the guard turn his attention away.

“You! Stop,” he commanded shakily. He began to approach Karlus hurriedly though still visibly cautious.

His cover blown Karlus took flight again, tearing away from the guard as fast as his thin legs could carry him. He ran across the bridge and found himself before a series of shops and storefronts. He searched frantically for another escape route and came across one. Another alleyway wedged between two of the buildings. He slipped into it, glancing over his shoulder to see if the guard still pursued.

“I said stop,” the young guard warned again as he chased after Karlus. In the morning light the mage’s dark clothing did little to obscure him from sight. Having cornered him in the alleyway the guard closed the distance between the two. “Enough of your tricks mage, you are under arrest. Do not resist again.” Karlus noticed a slight shaking in the guards hand as he held it out in some vain attempt to assuage the mage’s trepidation. Surprisingly the guard had yet to draw his weapon. Perhaps he sought to end things peaceably or perhaps his nerves got the better of him. Either way he approached Karlus.

To his back were walls, grime, and debris. No running this time. The hiss that called to Karlus somewhere from deep within was no longer there replaced only by a numb burning sensation. A sort of migraine. Whenever the voice made itself known it left the mage fatigued for a time. Still, he felt he had some power in him yet despite the weight of the erasure ward that hung around them.

“You’ve made a mistake. I’m not with the League, whatever they’ve done, I only arrived today. I have nothing to do with whatever else is going on here.” Karlus pleaded with the guard. It was probably too late, but it was better, better than just killing him. “Just leave me alone. Walk away, please… I do not want to hurt you.”

Collaboration between @Famotill and @Kassarock
Inconsistency and ineptitude?! On my RPG?!

Jk you'll fit right in with the rest of us.
@Fetzen Seriously, I'm just joking around bro, I've enjoyed our recent roleplaying synchronicity. Just in a bit of a shitpost-y mood today for some reason.
@Kassarock You know the only way to beat a stalker.......

Is to stalk them.

So I now have a mod approved stalking licence?
@POOHEAD189 Three out of my last four roleplays he's registered interest after I do, coincidence?

Nah, definitely stalking me. 100% Confirmed.

Pls save me mods

This is very sound advice.

Whenever someone asks me what character/character type they should play my response is always the same - the character you want to play. That's not always the character that is 'needed' in a roleplay - ie a particular kind of fighter to add balance w.e. I also think you probably already have a tiny inkling of a character you want to write, it's just tapping into that feeling and turning it into a golden nugget :)

You got this!

That's not to say though that trying to fill roles or niches in a group is a bad thing. Having a group with a wider array of characters in terms of roles, identities, and personalities always makes more varied character interactions. It can also be a fun challenge to write to a very particular brief and help you push outside your comfort zone or find roles you really like but had never tried.

But when its at this kind of stage, where no one has been accepted, and there is no 'group' to slot into as of yet - then yeah, the best bet is probably just to follow your heart!
@Fetzen Stop joining all my RPs you frickin weirdo, HOW DARE YOU HAVE SIMILAR TASTES TO ME!
