No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

That would sound right, but Ruby's the younger sister. So I think the order there is reversed.

I didn't mean to say that you should be responsible for serving up everyone individualized situations or pitches, and if that's how it came across, I apologize. I actually think the regimented schedule is a sign that you had a good idea to set up situations for everyone to use that, ultimately, didn't quite work.

And a restructuring along those lines sounds, to me, like a good plan. But if more people like things as they are than not, then by all means we should continue with the system.

This is all just what I think; I wanted to bring it up so other people can chime in.

(And excellent use of the Oobleck image)
@harinezumikouken, @Lucius Cypher: This is exactly the sort of discussion I was hoping for. And the sort I enjoy having, because it's productive and gets different viewpoints on a matter. And Lucius is exactly right; seeing how combat-oriented characters interact outside of that zone is really interesting. But he's also right in that some of the classes can get really, really boring. And though it seems that might make me a "summer soldier", classes like Math and such really don't inspire in me any desire to post. We can't have characters that are always fighting, either, but it seems to me that we get the most activity (and interesting activity) when people are free to let their characters play off of one another.

Because that's the sort of thing that makes me want to post. Writing a transcript of the same class that I finished this morning from a different viewpoint? Interesting once or twice, but gets dull really quickly. And to fix that boredom, we tend to jump to the next period, or the next mission, and skip over so many chances for interpersonal character interactions in the process.

And you're absolutely right, @harinezumikouken. Beacon is an institution of learning, and cutting that out would be senseless. And I can't really say I have a solution, either. But if we think about RWBY, the show rather than this game, how much time does the show linger on the actual classes? By percentage, I wouldn't say more than fifteen to twenty percent. If that. Nor does it focus all on the action. It tends to center around how the characters are interacting. By volume, the majority of the material is what the characters are doing with each other in their own time.

Obviously there needs to be some kind of schedule, otherwise no one in the game would be on the same page. But it seems like (and this is purely my opinion; I can't claim to speak for anyone else) by following such a restrictive schedule, we cut out so much of what RWBY actually consists of. The interesting things about the game are the characters; how Sapphire and Shiro will handle one another, how long until Gratia tries to end Napoli, will Luke ever get a clue? Those are the sort of arcs that make games interesting to read and play.

I don't have a solution, but it seems to me that the regimented schedule doesn't really work as well as it could. And I feel like a solution should gear itself towards allowing that freedom for interaction, towards what the show actually consists of, without abandoning that realistic backdrop.

I do truly feel like some people stop making an effort when faced with something they don't think would be interesting. The point isn't to jump in and start eating when a perfect scenario has been laid out for us; as Casual writers, it's partially our responsibility to make interesting things happen. I can understand if someone doesn't want to participate in a certain event, but if you've made the commitment of joining a Lugubrious RP in a universe with a huge fan following and a dedication to its late creator, 'wanting' doesn't factor in. Good writers aren't summer soldiers that jump ship when the going gets hard.

Silvan, good to see you. I was holding out hope.

Seniors can do their own missions!

But that's not really how RPGs... Work. Players absolutely have a responsibility to make interesting things happen, but it's also a GM's job to create chances for players to make those interesting things happen. Nor is this a player's job. At the end of the day people play RPGs because they're fun. No one here signed on to make this their job, and play through boring situations just because they're what a "Casual writer" should do. That's actually really elitist, and elitist for a section of the site with "Casual" in the name. Yeah, that means that there should be quality to posts. And I haven't seen anyone dip below that quality in quite a while. Being a Casual player doesn't mean that you need to commit to write though things that are boring.

Roleplay here if you enjoy writing at least a paragraph or two, character development, and some depth. Grammar and spelling are encouraged. Generally one paragraph (a few sentences) per post.

That's what being a Casual player means. It means agreeing to a certain standard of writing. Nowhere in that description is there an obligation to keep writing because you have to, it means you write because you want to. Wanting absolutely factors into it, because that's the reason we're all here.

I don't mean to be offensive, but as someone who does in fact GM, this is something I feel very strongly about. Players are in no way obligated to take part in something that they don't really find enjoyable. There's no need to call people who don't leap at the chance to write about Math class "summer soldiers".
Just so I know, anyone happen to have a sound-based esper/magician already or in the works?

I know Plank's working on a magician that casts spells with music
Did someone say prayer?

(That took longer than expected to write)

"Happily."

Rebekah took a few quick steps away from the group, each one taking her further out, towards the center of attention. She was satisfied when she hit an arm-and-a-half's length away, far enough out that she couldn't hit anyone but she could still be heard. Her heart was going a mile a minute, excitement turning the dial up to eleven. But she needed to be professional. So all that excitement went into a few showy card flourishes while she talked, opening with a riffle shuffle and transitioning cleanly into a bridge. At least, it looked like one. It was actually sleight of hand, made it look like she was shuffling even though she kept the original order. But it wasn't necessary anyway. Just looked good.

"I have fourteen unique spells on my person. Several can't easily be demonstrated, unless someone feels like attacking me already, so I've settled on two that I can demonstrate. Number cards are my utilitarian spells, while Aces and Faces are more potent." The British teen casually drew the top two cards of the deck, turning them to the teacher to show their numbers and suites. "I'll be showing you the Two of Spades, and the Queen of Spades. Offensive spells. My other Face cards, among other things, can break any defense, block any attack, and analyze any spell I witness."

The rest of her deck went back into her pocket, while their owner faced away from the school. Two of Spades first, almost like a warmup. Then the big show. She slipped the Queen into her left hand, and held the Two up in front of her between her fore and middle fingers. "Bridge-keeper's cache; #27!"

The card glowed, for a brief moment, but was overshadowed instantly by the light gathering before her hand. Soft but intensifying, as if drawing in and collecting sunlight. It lasted a mere instant, replaced between blinks by a long, gunmetal gray katana that seemed to appear from nowhere. Her hand closed around the handle smoothly, just before she swept the blade once through the air and let it rest at her side. That had been easy, but she didn't have time to look and see how it went over. It was showtime.

“Archangel Uriel, lend this humble servant thine holy light, so I may shine it upon those who would do evil. Those who would lie, those who would steal, those who would harm their fellow man, hear my creed and know judgement!" Her voice started soft, practiced, but it swelled the further she progressed. Growing in volume, becoming passionate, and climbing towards a righteous crescendo as she stabbed her blade forwards for emphasis. "Lumina Deus, Caede Inimicos:"

"Light up the night!"

The words had scarcely left her mouth before, eager to obey, the incandescent beam leaped from the tip of her sword. The air crackled along its path, radiating faintly gold light from a core of blinding white energy. Pure, unfiltered mana concentrated into a massive beam. It sapped her energy with each second, and she knew it wouldn't last long, but she carefully dragged the beam from right to left, bathing the area before her in righteous fire. The beam tapered off after a few seconds, gradually diminishing over the course of a few moments to nothingness. She flicked the katana down and to her right, as if casting off any remnants, and sheathed it smoothly in front of her body.

"Amen."

So, that's actually a decent segue. No offense meant to anyone, this is just me thinking out loud, but does anyone else feel like activity goes way down during classes? Not combat class, because the way that's set up forces everyone to take part. But for all the other classes, I feel like people are saying things like "When are classes done" a lot, and activity seems to drop.

Part of that seems to be that splitting everyone off into groups keeps the same smaller groups together, so if a few people are busy for a few days, it's perceived as "not doing anything". I say this as someone who's been on both ends of that interpretation. Sometimes I'm busy, and sometimes the players I'm interacting with are. And normally people could just break away from interactions that are dragging on, or loop someone else into the interaction to bring some life back in. But in a regimented schedule, those opportunities are few and far between.

It seems like we get the most activity during the breaks between classes. Lunch, trips between classes, free time, etc. The interaction there seems to be plentiful, and it's where all the little character arcs seem to get advanced. It seems like such a regimented character is restricting activity and interaction, sometimes. Having to wait until specified times to be able to do... Anything other than what the theme of that class is, honestly. Having to wait for missions or Grimm studies to get any fights with Grimm, combat class to really get the chance to do any PvP, free time to do anything that isn't learning or fighting.

I mean, and now we're skipping the rest of the academic day, evening, and night so we can get to missions. From one regimented activity, to a significantly more entertaining event, albeit still pre-scheduled, and still skipping over the free time in between.

At this point I'm rambling, honestly. No offense to anyone, least of all the GMs, but it was something I was thinking about and figured I'd bring up. See what other people were thinking.
The only thing that would have made Rebekah look more attentive was a notebook. Her ears had perked up as soon as the teacher called the first magician forward, particularly at the reference to his magic. Digitized spelltomes, that was what he said. Given that the student pulled out his phone a second later, that had to be how he accessed the spells. It reminded her of when she started trying to digitally produce necessary runes by printing saved files. The results hadn't been bad, but she was going to have to revisit the concept. Digitizing an entire spellbook, and being able to cast straight from it, would make the process so much more efficient. Vastly increase the number of spells she could use at a moment's notice, too. With all of them bound to just one device she could keep so many more of them on her person.

She pushed her extrapolations to the back of her mind as soon as the spell started. A massive bolt straight up, splitting continuously (chain lightning maybe?) into smaller bolts headed back towards the ground until dissipation. Given the amount of energy contained in a single bolt normally, it was safe to say that his spell on full power was potent. But was it one and done on full power? She couldn't change up the power ratings on her own spells very much, but she could manage two Faces and three Numbers before she started running low. If full power was a one-use-before-replenish, how many times could a spell normally be used?

Things to experiment with later, she decided. After she found a way to make spells work digitally. That was going to be a project all its own. And she didn't have time to worry about it now. If they were going by line order, she was probably next. She took her deck from her pocket casually, but inside she was so, so much more excited. She didn't get to have feedback on her experiments very often, and her deck was her very best.

Still, only the faintest hints of a smile broke through her concentration as she looked through the cards fanned out in her hand. Some of them were difficult to showcase. She couldn't really heal someone, break defenses, or block an attack. Ace of Clubs and Ace of Hearts were both too internal to count for much. Ace of Spades looked good, but she couldn't showcase its abilities very well. Forcing single combat didn't work, either.

Queen or King of Clubs it was, then.
For the same reason as Anderson wanted his targets gone. Elimination of competition or obstacles. Among other potential reasons. And that's before considering all of the halfway decent people that might object to having a mass murderer commanding an organized crime group.

And as Vocab pointed out, it was a joke anyway.
I mean if you want a tangible reason for what started out as a joke, I could probably make a list. Starting with "eliminating the organized crime group responsible for arson and murder".
