No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

Rebekah Cross

Location: Academy Campus
Interacting With: Her Slowly Growing Frustration With Her Environment

Children of the Gods. Descendants of the Greek pantheon, a collection of beings with power ranging from the Sun and death itself. Living embodiments of the elements that make up the world. The modern world had ceased to believe in them, but they lived on, and so did their children. Literal demigods.

Aaaaaand they were still all teenagers who didn’t understand the need for quiet reflection and study and work on one’s personal projects free from outside interferences and distractions. Though to be entirely fair, Rebekah Cross’ standards for what constituted “quiet” were far and above what most would agree on. She would’ve been quite happy if they were all completely silent, honestly. At least her own rooms were always quiet. She could very easily control the volume within the bounds of her own home. But there was just one, small problem with that.

She wasn’t home.

She was outside.

On campus.

Trying to locate somewhere with outlets, a corner, a table (this one was optional), somewhere to sit, and a decibel (and population) level within her acceptable ranges. It honestly wasn’t proving to be very easy. Several subsections of the population were, by definition, noisy and/or chatty. Chatty was worse than noisy. Noisy could be ignored. Noisy could even be tuned out, with the right set of headphones. Even without headphones, honestly. Promachos was not meant for creating noise cancellation tokens to carefully place at the perimeter of her territory, but…

Athena had almost as many siblings as Rebekah had fingers. She had to have been there. Rebekah refused to believe her mother had never been there.

Anyway, she had ruled out the dining hall. And the gym facility by definition. The library, weirdly enough, wasn’t comfortable enough. Chairs were too hard-backed. Too much chance of people coming through, bitching about a history project or something. So here she was, roaming outside on the campus, trying to decide where she was going to perch for her projects. Going home would be simple. But she might actually need something from the library, and walking home and then back to the library was too time consuming.

The parking lot was over there. Shame she couldn’t just work in her car. But draining the car battery to fuel her laptop seemed a little excessively desperate. First world problems, she supposed.

Benjamin Lloyd - Brewing Storm

"Let's focus, huh, Negasi? Mission first, flirt later." Ben shot back, keeping his cool once the lights went out. Faint implications of movement in the dark drew his attention, but they weren't surprising. The power wasn't going to go out naturally. It was their new Grimm friends, of course. He could see them clearer as the seconds went by, but not well enough yet. A single shotgun blast from each weapon made sure nothing was too close in front of him while he smoothly drew closer to the flank of the newly-organized formation of hunters, with Amy at the front.

"I've got right flank. If anyone's going to light things up, warn us. Don't want to wreck our night vision. Amy, lead the way."
you should see my dorm

i have three people in a room meant for two and none of us into cleaning regularly

You'd still have to consider the frantic conditions, even taking account a normal persons night vision. Much harder to do find obstacles and hostile when the hostile are in flux and the obstacles are the least of your worries.

I suggest spraying and praying, or failing that flailing wildly.

Except moving enemies makes things easier. There's nothing frantic about what the humans in that room are doing, the only chaos is coming from the movements of Grimm.

Moving enemies, especially when you know where your allies are in relation to you, makes discerning targets even easier than discerning obstacles. Telling one target from another becomes trickier when you have a large group, but frankly there's no need to tell them apart. Seeing a moving hostile in low light conditions is easy. A shotgun in its direction is even easier.

Human night vision evolved in large part so we could deal with the things that go bump in the night.
Bingo!

Same reason you can navigate a dark room after a few seconds, even if it was perfectly lit before. You might not be able to see detail, but discerning your surroundings is easy peasy.

And light from a lit room through a doorway is a lot more light than my bedroom when I turn the light out. And contains fewer things trying to kill me.

I really need to clear my floor of tripping hazards.
Er, Sho?

<Snipped quote by previous post>

Everyone's at a disadvantage right now; the only light available is from the room at the end of a nearby hallway. Anyone intent on fighting will have to do so by sound and touch.

Weeeeeeell, actually, that's not how sight works.

Human eyesight is excellent at detecting movement, even in low-light conditions. What it's not excellent at is discerning detail in those conditions. Furthermore, human night vision kicks in fairly quickly and provides a decent level of visual acuity in conditions that aren't "total blackness".

Plus I can't help but think that ditching glowing red eyes is pretty much tearing itself away from everything ever shown about Grimm ever, but I don't have any influence over that bit.

I'll have a post done for Benjamin as soon as I can, but this is finals week. My time is at an absolute premium.
Ah. In that case, I'll try and get a post for Ben done tonight.
Proceed with what? It's the end of the semester, I don't get to check back here as often as I'd like.
