No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

Rebekah blinked, the outward sign of her surprise. She looped a hand around the shake slowly and drew it back towards her, taking a long sip from the straw, followed by a second. The faint upwards bend to the corners of her mouth was the first sign, since Dana sat down, that her mood was anything but neutral. She took one more sip before she said anything, returning her hands to the keyboard and inputting only a few more keystrokes before she hit save and put the device to sleep.

"Much appreciated, Ms. Harada. You need not have gotten me anything, but I appreciate it. I am quite fond of the shakes here." The Athenian demigoddess leaned back in her seat, carefully closing the lid of her laptop and remaining quiet a moment. "I would enjoy going out to eat at some point, as well."

"I rarely attend my lectures. I have none to attend today. Whenever you are free in the future, let me know. Do you have a piece of paper?"

"Entirely possible. Though it would imply a certain... Arrogance. A very human arrogance." Rebekah took a long sip of her drink, and paused to stack the three plates at her table then slide them towards the outside edge of the booth. Her breakfast was done, with nothing left unconsumed, so she just had her coffee and her morning routine left. As per usual her tip for the waitress would be left underneath the edge of the plate stack, clocking in at precisely 25% of her total bill. This minor rearrangement complete she took a moment to key a few sentences in to her computer (at a frankly disturbing rate of words per minute), before turning her eyes on the Daughter of Ares again. "Not that this is a new thought. I have pondered the surprisingly human nature of godly emotions, and frankly concluded that a good many of them lack any real emotional maturity. That they would keep to areas where they were worshiped for reasons of affection or vanity is entirely possible."

"Their interactions with their godly children seem to be much more variable. I have heard of some who have scarcely ever met their parent, whereas I see mine at least once a month for coffee and an evasive discussion on the nature of the gods. Among other topics. They seem to be, at their core, inherently strange people."

"Oh." The Tactical Mage uttered the single syllable calmly, processing all of the information this 'Angel' had offered up quickly and efficiently. Up close, it was much easier to tell that she he was male. The indicative traits were largely obscured at a distance, but at this range they were self-evident. His story checked out as well, offering up a perfectly acceptable explanation for why he had been following her. A story sold, in part, by the authenticity of the nervousness involved in answer. Her hand subtly shifted back up the scabbard towards the hilt of the blade, away from the positioning for a Mordhau strike it'd been in. "Alright. My apologies."

She turned in a fluid motion and continued approaching the tub, leaning her sword against the wall adjacent and depositing her towel on a chair. The robe joined it. She'd already changed into her swimsuit in her room, so she just needed to remove the loose shirt and pants so they didn't get wet when she stepped in.

"Carry on with whatever you were up to, then."

"Frankly, I do not think they were ever confined to the West." The dark-haired girl sipped her coffee, looking as though she were mulling over how best to continue the elaboration of her thoughts. It was a topic, in truth, that she had given not inconsiderable consideration to, albeit on a broader scale. History and mythology were an... Odd blend. "Consider it from this perspective. In the eyes of most of the world, our ancestors are myths. Nothing more. The Greeks worshiped them, and when the Greeks stopped doing so, they became regarded as what they always were; stories. From this view, it is easy to see why the Greek view of them never spread."

"But in reality, they exist. Entities with immense levels of power that can be called quite literally godlike. Nothing could restrain them geographically, let alone the petty boundaries of mortal men and women. In fact the Romans adopted variants on the Greek myths for themselves, and spread them much wider across the Roman Empire. So they did spread." She paused, and sipped again. "So, in truth, there are two possibilities."

"Firstly, they did spread from the very start. They simply never interacted as closely with the world elsewhere, or were worshiped under different names. Or, secondly, they were limited. But if they truly are on the same level of power as they like to claim, mere national borders could not limit them. Something would have kept them confined to their region of worship. Something powerful enough to give a god reason not to roam about. In other words, something on or above their own level of power." Athena's daughter shrugged, tapping a finger on the side of her mug.

"I do not know which is accurate, or even if I am on the right path of consideration. Mother won't tell me. But it makes one wonder if perhaps the Greek gods are not the only ones that were real."
i'm generally all for pointing out the flaws in the american school system, but

the history classes in my school at least were very thorough

i got all the details because i took AP US, but even the basic us history class (which was required) was pretty detailed.
Cyare Staunton: Rising, Shining-Process-Starting

The groggy girl did not seem to be going away. She paid it no mind, at first, because there was only the one efficient route back to the central hub of the inn. If she was headed anywhere but her room, she would have had to follow the same route. So Cyare kept moving, headed towards the hot tub without glancing back. When she passed the main lobby and the girl was still there, though, she began to take slightly more note. So she slowed, as an experiment, to read a sign on one of the notice boards.

The other girl seemed perplexed a moment, but she slowed and pretended to read a different notice.

And resumed walking when Cyare did, after what was probably supposed to be an inconspicuous delay. Perhaps she thought the Tactical Mage hadn't noticed, but she had been counting. Exactly a five second delay. By this point, there was little doubt in her mind that the groggy girl's similar route was not a coincidence. So, when she reached the hot tub's area, she paused and turned around.

"Good morning, miss. Is there something I can help you with?"
Benjamin Lloyd: Brewing Storm

"Well, saw that comin'."

Lawnslot came to life with a sharp, loud report followed by a second to slow the swarm down a little, while Artorius' breech slid open. BASL's leader retreated a few steps to keep a little distance, while she grabbed a color-coded shotgun shell off his belt and slipped it into the breech. His weapons weren't really suited to dealing with such small Grimm, at least not efficiently enough for such a large horde. And neither Sangue nor Lauren were much better for it, and it wasn't like Amy could take out the whole group. Sooo it was time to even things up a bit.

The close-knit stampede, damned Grimm scampering over each other in eagenerss to get to BASL, actually made them easy prey for the Lightning Dust round he'd loaded up earlier. Chain lightning was real good for swarms, and the metal floor'd ground the charge nicely once it left the swarm. It only took a few seconds to line up the shot with the densest part of the Grimm, and send the Dust round rocketing towards its target.

Then he took several more steps away from the Grimm. He didn't particularly feel like getting mauled by rats.
Kawaguchi Umeko

@pyroman, @Crimmy

"Yep!" Umeko confirmed cheerfully, head pivoting to regard the newcomer brightly. Poofy blue hair, wide build, and friendly expression. Not someone she remembered seeing around before, but not someone she was likely to miss in the future. Hair like that, she'd be visible from orbit. The student of Shade shifted a little so she could keep both her less-than-talkative teammate and the newcomer in sight, folding up her sunglasses in her left hand so she could see colors a little more accurately. Echo's hair, as it turned out, was even brighter without the shades. "Gonna take a wild guess and say you are, too. You look real strong!"

"Where you from? Not Shade, we'd know if you were. Not getting a Mistral vibe. Atlas? You look like someone they'd want to recruit." She leaned a little further over the bench, supporting herself by resting her crossed arms on the back of it, and regarded her (she guessed) fellow countrywoman with a bright grin. "Don't mind Tear, here, she's never very talkative."

"And apparently doesn't quite get the wonders of merchandise, either. You have any idea the kind of cash I could make offering to model my own merch for Vale Style Co.? Or Atlesian Accessories?"
@OnaraxSo yeah, I give the 2nd(?) Tsundere of team TSUN my stamp of approval.

hahahahahahaha

oh no

there's a reason we went out of our way to make the four letter name TSUN
Cyare Staunton: Rising, Not-So-Much-Shining

The proper time to rise was before the sun, and warm up at the same rate. Environment dictated how best to warm up, generally. A forest was wonderful for sword drills, a mountain pass was excellent for a run, so on and so forth. Unfortunately an inn was good for nothing. She hated wasting the money, but city guards generally frowned on people sleeping on the streets. So she had to shell out for a room (just one; Rei got to pay for his own), and more irritatingly, the challenge in her morning exercise. Without much space, she had to make do with sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks. The latter she did twice, once at the beginning and now at the end.

The warmup was more for her own state of mind than the exercise. The exercise was excellent, of course, but it was how she woke up for the day. Without it she felt sluggish, like she hadn't really gotten out of bed. Sword drills were usually good for her state of mind, but she didn't have anywhere with both the quiet and the space she wanted. By the time the sun had truly risen she was done for the morning, and ready to face the rest of the day. Not that Rei was awake yet. She had time.

Which was why she had her complimentary robe and towel in hand, headed for the hot tub attached to the inn. A shower made her clean, but heat promised to be too excellent to pass up. She was aware, albeit relatively dimly, of a much more groggy girl stepping out into the hallway, but she didn't pay much attention. She wanted to be ready when Rei hauled his ass out of bed.

There was work to do.
