If it's any consolation, she's fairly contained in her Territory. But I agree with your assessment. As for Shinji, I don't think it's literal possession, but it has the same kind of effect.

I'm told Misty has always been like that, and I assume nobody is there to reel her in when it gets worse. Shinji on the other hand is taken over, effectively.

Not so much betrayal for them—I'm somewhat confident they just go crazy. I don't have a date to place on that, but it happens after the System transition.
