Sometimes protecting us necessitates protecting Existence. But it doesn't have to. He doesn't go to a lot of battles.

My dad says that his priorities are us, then the Earth, then Existence. If protecting the latter would stop him from protecting the former, then it's not worth protecting.

Yeah, you're right. I think that when someone tries to carry the weight of the world, it ends up being too much. If everyone protected what they really cared about, we might all be a lot better off.
