how long has the metahuman gene been around? Would they have existed in ancient times? It would be a cool explanation for the mythical heroes of mythology.

Stephen implied that the event that started it all and the public knowledge were close together; at the very least, it would be a few years before 2010.
Also, the MHLA is Cer's old organization, a group dedicated to helping Metas use their powers...but they have a secret dark side that makes Cedric look like a fool for being friends with their old master before said old master and the organization got destroyed.

Yes, that's what makes it tricky, the people honestly had no idea why Vince and his father could do what they did. This heavily contributed to the fire that led to his death, if the people knew it was just a genetic difference they might not have acted so rashly. Metas were around before 2010 and I'm sure that some one them knew they had powers and used them. I'll fix it to make it more clear, thanks for letting me know.
Counter-pheromones I'm not completely sure about but the other two would work provided you have an advanced ventilation system. There's an element of Emotion manipulation to it that even with the best possible suit/vent people will still feel something small though a meta may not.
