The worst thing about mental illness is you have to look after yourself a disgusting amount. I know it's the only way to actually be in a fit state to look out for others, but it still feels wrong.

Judging by the Internet's definitions of introversion and extraversion, you'd think everyone's either an extreme hermit or a party animal with no in between.

Bio

A frazzled British thirtysomething cat mum with something of a tea addiction.

I like a wide range of RP genres, but have two absolute favourites: Pokemon and magical girls. (If someone manages to combine the two, I'll be VERY happy!) I post fairly regularly, but sometimes shit mental health days crop up - if that causes any delays, I'll try to resume posting ASAP.

Amber Pine

Mesalon Gym -> Outside the Pokecentre

@Dusksong

"It's no problem," Amber reassured Aedre. "I'll be right with you in a moment." After heading back to the main hall to tell Rachel and Vivianne she'd be out for a while, she returned, the two watchful Pokemon in tow. "Alright, let's go take a look."

She turned at the sound of laboured footsteps. "I'll help out too!" Sophia called, in that groggy tone of someone who had just woken up. The brunette clung to her Bronzor, still barely able to stand despite her recent nap. "I mean this calls for a skillset like mine."

Amber took a few seconds to think over her response. It would have to be worded carefully, very carefully, so that it wouldn't be taken the wrong way. "Sophia... It's great that you want to help, but you don't have to overtax yourself," she decided on. "Your abilities would be at their best if you let them recover now and again."

Just as Amber had expected, Sophia rolled her eyes. "Oh geez! First Rheese, then Oscar, now you! How many times do I have to tell people I'm fine?"

There was no talking her out of it. "Just let us know if you want to head back," the researcher said as she made her way to the exit. "Nobody will fault you for it." Nobody except Sophia herself, anyway. If only there was some way to convince her she didn't have to.

The air outside was steadily cooling, pink tinges to the clouds. Evening settling over the quiet little town would make for a picturesque scene, Amber thought, if not for the multitude of thoughts rushing through her mind, competing for the forefront. She turned to Aedre, keeping up the pretense that she had nothing else to focus on for now. "So, whereabouts did you last have it?"

In the corner of her eye, she saw Sophia sag, her grip nearly loosening from Clarus. "Please..." Amber rushed to her side. "Don't keep doing this to yourself. Maybe we should stop by the Pokemon centre, then if you feel better later and we still haven't found the package, you can help out."

Sophia Danvers

Mesalon Gym -> Pokecentre

@Dusksong @OtomostheCrazy @fer1323

Amber's words sounded distant through the fog of dizziness that filled Sophia's mind. She held on to Clarus with all the strength she could manage, her weakening state proof of something she didn't want to accept. Amber was right. She wouldn't be of any use right now.

"But..." she started. All she'd done was try to sense anything out of the ordinary, yet in her current state, even that had proven too much. Before she could say anything more, or resume her particular way of searching, Lacey backed Amber up with an insistent squeak of "Gothi-gothi!"

Sophia hung her head. "Maybe just for a while then, but I'll be fine before long," she mumbled, trudging along after the others. "If there's anything I can do to help, though..." Surely she of all people should be able to assist her friends.

... Her friends. That bitterness welling through her wasn't just from humiliation, Sophia acknowledged. Aedre may have shown a grating amount of pity after the disastrous gym battle yesterday, and Amber was almost as bad a know-it-all as Oscar, but... She really did want to help these people. Aedre had seemed so nervous, and Sophia knew exactly what the feeling of having messed up was like.

It was when they neared the Pokemon centre that Lacey piped up again. "Gothi! Ita!" she called, pointing a stubby hand at the other two trainers.

"Hm?" As her starter Pokemon stared intently at her, Sophia felt a gentle push at her mind. "You want to tell me something?" Lacey nodded, and a brief image flashed through Sophia's head. An image of the Gothita trotting after the group of flying Pokemon. "You'd like to help them search?" Another nod.

Despite her sulky mood, Sophia gave a little smile. "I'll wait inside for you, and please, let me know if there's any trouble." She turned her attention to Amber and Aedre. "Make sure you treat her well, ok?" These two seemed like people she could trust, but still, she had to make it clear she would NOT be happy if any avoidable problems came up.

Staggering to the doors, she glanced over her shoulder. "See you Lacey... And try not to worry about me." With that, she headed inside. She still couldn't shake the guilt at her own inability to contribute, but even if she couldn't be helpful, at least Lacey could. Now to sit and wait for the group and her starter to return.

She shuffled towards a chair, stopping as she spotted who else was in the lobby. Two people she wasn't exactly in the mood to deal with. Turning away, she slunk towards one of the further ends of the room, for once hoping to avoid being noticed.

  • Name: Fuyuko Yamazaki
  • Age: 17
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance:
  • Personality: Shy and reserved, Fuyuko prefers to observe from a distance rather than actively participate in events. While polite, sometimes excessively so, such formality can be misinterpreted as coldness, and her timid personality doesn't help. Because she goes out of her way to avoid starting or aggravating conflicts, and doesn't like to fight other magical girls, some people wonder why she's even taking part in the Hex Night. The truth is, despite her usually gentle nature, she's no pushover. Just like a soft snowfall can become a fierce blizzard, Fuyuko goes all out to protect others, both from monsters and from more mundane causes of harm. The reason she signed up for the Hex Night is partly to fulfil her duty to prevent the creation of another beast, and partly because a wish could be the miracle her family needs.
  • Skills: Knowledge of folktales and their various retellings, which could help magical girls with related concepts explore their abilities in more depth.
  • Brief Backstory: Fuyuko grew up in a small mountain village, the elder of two sisters, with a father who owned a small bookshop and a mother who worked as a teacher. Considering her parents, it was no wonder that she had a thirst for knowledge from early childhood. Myths and legends in particular intrigued her, and she'd sit entranced as her father told her all manner of stories. As she grew, so did her fascination with folklore, her childlike curiosity and imagination never diminishing.

    Of course, it turned out events weren't as easily resolved as they were in books. One night, something happened that the family would never have expected in such a quiet area; the store was broken into, and several rare books were stolen. Her father was never the same again after that. Struggling financially, his sense of security in tatters, he withdrew into himself, turning to unhealthy coping techniques such as excessive drinking. This sparked many arguments between her parents, and all Fuyuko could do was try to protect her sister from the fallout, taking her for long nature walks and keeping her distracted with the same stories that served as her refuge.

    In the early hours one morning, she lay in bed, unable to sleep for the unusually intense wave of hopelessness washing over her. She closed her eyes, trying to drift off, then opened them again to a sight that made her sit right up. A fairy? She had to be dreaming, yet the shock was all too real when the fairy pointed out something through the window, unveiling the world to her for what it was. Shadowy, monstrous beings gathered around the house like a pack of hungry wolves, seeking to drain away any positivity the family still had. When told by the mysterious visitor there was a way she could fend them off, Fuyuko accepted in desperation. With her newfound abilities as a magical girl, she succeeded in destroying most of the monsters and sending the rest fleeing.

    Since then, she made sure to do her utmost to purify as many manifestations of darkness as possible, but no matter what she did, it never felt like enough. The struggles within her family continued, worsening over time despite people's efforts to help. It was hearing about the Hex Night that brought her a glimmer of hope. She signed up for the chance at the prize, a wish. In her case, a wish that her father would recover.

    • Magical Girl Appearance:
    • Concept: Yuki-Onna (snow spirit)
    • Archetype: A foldable fan that she can use to whip up hailstorms and blasts of icy wind. The imagery on the fan is of a full moon over white-capped mountains, as it represents an Oguni folktale of a yuki-onna, a moon princess who descended to earth along with snow.
    • Abilities:
  • Frost Touch: By touching something or somebody, she can generate ice over a surface within a small radius. This can be used to partially freeze somebody in place, or to create weapons and armour of ice.
  • Winter Mist: She can turn into a cloud of wispy cold mist to evade attacks. While almost immediate at first, the more often she does this within a short length of time (like the typical duration of a battle), the longer the shifting takes. If she's hit mid-evaporation, she gets injured as normal and instantly reforms.
  • Vitality Absorb: When she activates this, glowing blue veins spread across her hand, which she rests on someone to slowly drain their strength and heal herself. This is interrupted as soon as contact is broken, so it's normally used to slightly weaken opponents rather than incapacitate them. It can also be reversed and used to heal allies at the cost of Fuyuko's own energy. Healing someone of a life-threatening injury would cause her to pass out.
@VitaVitaAR Just fixed the CS, hope that's ok.
@VitaVitaAR Would a white wand with streamers be better, which is what a yuki-onna from a specific legend (Oshika village folktale) is portrayed with? Or do I keep the fan, and since the Japanese fan is associated with the court, should it represent this one story about a yuki-onna who's a moon princess trapped on earth, and feature moon imagery as well as snowflakes?

@VitaVitaAR Thanks! Working on my CS, should have it finished soon.
Interested! Just a few questions first:

1) What are the monsters like? Do they "infect" people with negativity (like witches in Puella Magi Madoka Magica) or do they attack more directly? I know this probably won't come up in the RP, but this is just reference for characters' experiences.

2) How do people become magical girls?
Jessamyn "Jess" Bailey

At the suggestion, Roxy gave off a mix of emotions - rising panic from the mention of being in a car, as well as something more positive. That hint of hope. Maybe this was the best thing to do, Jess thought, as long as she did nothing to contribute to the anchor's anxiety.

"You'll do just fine," her mom said, pulling her into a hug. The bones in the arms around her hadn't been this prominent five years ago, Jess was sure of it. "I know you will."

Jess looked up at her with a slight smile. "Thanks, Mom. And... Thanks for this."

Once the empath had checked all belongings brought over were packed, and everyone had said their goodbyes, Jess dragged her suitcase to the car. Already she could feel that growing trepidation from Roxy. Jess took one more look at the window and waved at her mother, recalling the encouragement. Maybe if she got back to normal or as close to it as possible, so would her mom. And the more independence she gained, the fewer problems she'd cause Roxy.

Breathing deeply, she placed her suitcase in the back and climbed into the driver's seat.
Tama Miyara Angelite

@Noxx @KoL

Before Angelite could react, the attacker had hurled herself right against the forming walls, plummeting onto Soma's spear with an awful tearing sound. A gasp caught in the blue-haired girl's throat. Shedding her crystal shell for faster movement, she rushed towards the broken heap of a girl. It didn't matter that this was their enemy. She needed a healer, and fast.

"Hold on," Tama urged. "I'll go get someone who can help-" Just as she was about to search for Alara, the attacker jumped up. It was as if she hadn't even noticed the ragged hole in her torso, or her gaping eye socket, both of which poured forth wiry black strands instead of blood. Magical girls sometimes had unusual ways of showing damage, but Tama had never seen anything like this.

The dark girl's injuries did nothing to slow her down as she swung her spear. Leaping between her and the exhausted Soma, Tama crossed her wings. "Get past me first," she growled, her diamond-like barrier appearing.
