Bio

Current GM of World of Light. When it comes to writing, there's nothing I love more than imagination, engagement, and commitment. I'm always open to talk, suggestion, criticism, and collaboration. While I try to be as obliging, helpful, and courteous as possible, I have very little sympathy for ghosts, and anyone who'd like to string me along. Straightforwardness is all I ask for.

Looking for more personal details? I'm just some dude from the American south; software development is my job but games, writing, and trying to help others enjoy life are my passions. Been RPing for over a decade, starting waaaay back with humble beginnings on the Spore forum, so I know a thing or two, though I won't pretend to be an expert. If you're down for some fun, let's make something spectacular together.

Filia - Moon Over Bourbon Street

@vitavitaar@invisible man@trevor1001@flamelord

The struggling of the Tacodile in its mad endeavor to be freed caused Filia to grit her teeth. Nobody likes their hair being pulled, and for Filia, more pain than usual accompanied that action. Her Ringlet Spikes, jammed inside the beast's green pepper-flesh, had stopped spinning due to the friction, which left her open for attack. Before the Tacodile could wrench away and slam Filia's head into the road, however, one of the other fighters intervened. After Kyouko's bold declaration, the schoolgirl expected something truly blockbuster-worthy. That spear-whip of hers penetrated the monster's crisp shell with ease and cleaved through the filling within, scattering shreds of lettuce and beef onto the ground. A gasp of effort escaped Filia's lips and the Ringlet Spikes receded, their presence no longer required. By the time she opened her moist eyes, Kyouko had ripped the Tacodile's head apart, and the rest of the beast sagged to the ground with as much flare as a soggy, day-old taco.

Methodically, Filia stood up. A few new bruises stung her knees and elbows, pepper juice soaked parts of her hair, and several strands lay stick in the creature or in the ground, but otherwise she appeared alright. From the back of her head, Samson gave a grunt of approval. ”Not bad, that girl. The blond and pink-haired dudes didn't do much. Krieg did alright, too. Not worth trustin' them, though.” By twisting himself into two long pigtails, the parasite wrung the pepper juice out of Filia's hair. Afterward, it fanned out into a more-or-less normal position, hanging loosely behind the schoolgirl as she approached the others over an obstacle course of craters in the Oreo and cracker earth. She clasped her hands in front of her and meekly said, “Thanks for the help.”
From the untroubled air, Clotho observed the entire battlefield. Judging by the profuse incendiaries spouting in bursts from the entrances to the outpost underground, Torrens was doing his job well, and after the inner defenses had been burned to a crisp the subterranean divisions would be able to proceed with their attack. In only a few moments, the Swarm Queen imagined, there would form the pincer-attack to crush the dwarven outpost from inside and outside simultaneously. Focusing now on the battle, she spotted a group of Antlions carving away at a section of wall below. Unfortunately for them, the dwarves stood rigid in defense of their bastion, and took advantage of everything at hand to rain agony on the living siege engines that assaulted them. Torches, braziers, fireplace embers, forge coals, and more all pelted the Antlions like hail, burning through their armor one chunk at a time. Before Clotho's eyes, one Antlion fell, its head affixed by an expertly-thrown lance. With a snarl Clotho descended, striking as a thunderbolt out of the blue, and dealt a kick powerful enough to snap the thrower's neck. On the way out, the Swarm Queen darted past a pair of dwarves carrying a huge urn of flaming embers, and cut into the back of one's knee. A cry heralded the downfall of the urn, spilling its contests out onto the walltop and lighting up wooden fortifications. On cue, part of the wall collapsed, and after the Antlion broke triumphantly through a crew of Myrmidons followed suit, fanning out into a shield formation.

Back in the sky now, Clotho could frankly concede that the dwarves were good. They knew their architecture, their warfare, and their technologies so thoroughly that any other army on the planet would have found a very tough time, if not undignified defeat, in an attack on this outpost. Clotho merely boasted the fortune of having a fighting force like no other on the planet. Beneath her, the event she'd bet on was coming to pass; from the sides and beneath the Horde attacked, leaving the dwarves with only the defenses of their buildings to serve them. Never one to bask in the thought of victory before it was assured, however, Clotho dove down from her vantage point to join in the struggle. A barricade set up by dwarves, fashioned of carts, barrels, and crates and fortified by flamethrowers and pikemen, had stalled her bugs' advance down a main street. Knowing that extended involvement would risk direct aggression and counterattack, Clotho engaged the obstacle by zooming low to the ground, in front of the barricade, and coming up from beneath to throw the flamethrowers out of position. While the weapons were disabled and the dwarves were distracted, the Myrmidons pressed the advantage and overwhelmed the barricade with a few casualties. Unfortunately, Clotho hadn't taken into account a third party, and from seemingly nowhere suffered a crossbow bolt in the small of her back from a hidden assailant. ”Agh! Ah, ah, ow!” Suddenly every beat of her wings was agony, and Clotho was forced to land on top of a building. Any dwarf worth his salt would be inbound to her location, hoping to finish off what was obviously a high-value target. Clotho needed help.
Ah, crap. I'm really, really sorry. I'e been putting this kind of low on my priorities list and have kept forgetting about it. I'll work up a post before the day is through.
would the giant robots get robots? :P

There's nothing about that sentence I don't love.

As for Smoke + Mirrors, I imagine the clones wouldn't be too much more powerful, just enough so that dumb force isn't an option and a smarter/creative solution must be reached. The characters prove that there's more to them than raw power, which is all the clones would have. But hey, it's just a concept, I've got no investment in it.
Duly noted, though it's worth waiting for those people to say so themselves, I think.

With the co-gm against it, though, I've come up with a few more event ideas. Some are edited versions of the alteration challenges. I did not count 'I Bet My Life' as an alteration challenge.

Thunderstruck: All characters are moved to a new and exciting arena, where one selected at random by the Viewer is 'charged'. This has no effect on their appearance save for a faint electric aura that makes the charge easy to recognize. The character acquires a point every second while charged, and anyone who touches the individual is charged instead, making this a chase kind of game. Special movement abilities for a charged character, like flight or teleportation, are limited.

Play Ball: Some kind of super sport involving a ball, obviously. Rules are up to the Viewer to decide, but two teams is the most likely option.

Land Before Time: The city returns to nature, sporting prehistoric sights like tar pits, steaming jungles, slimy swamps, lava flows, and glaciers, and it gains an unhealthy infestation of dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles, bugs, sea creatures, and more, from Stegosaurus to Dimorphodon to Pulmonoscorpius. The objective? To survive the many dangers of the ancient world and find the magnificent Golden Egg.

Life is a Highway: A grand demolition derby in an epic arena, with personalized vehicles and a whole lot of mayhem! Think a slightly less grim Twisted Metal.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: everyone gets mechs. Whether it's a race, a battle, or something else, the Viewer chooses.

Smoke + Mirrors: Every character is hunted by a palette-swapped doppelganger of themselves, with stronger abilities. It's up to every character to figure out the trick for beating their clone, be it outsmarting, eliciting help, or some other method.
It might be prudent for anyone who wouldn't want their character altered at all in some event/challenge or another to speak up. That way, we'll know if enough people are averse to it to exclude those challenges completely.

I for one would be okay with it.
@Lugubrious why did you suddenly like my isla cs?

That was the other person whose name starts with 'Lu'.
As a player and a co-GM, I will start out with saying I am really not a fan of any challenges that involve transforming or swapping characters.

This is largely because I generally feel like people have signed up to play a character, with that character's personality, appearance, and powers all intact. This is how I feel about it at least.

That being said, the non-transforming ones have potential, though I'll have to look into them a bit more.

Hm. Well, you're the boss. Or co-boss.

One Of Us seems tough to manage because it would be totally arbitrary or powergamed whether anyone ever found the real person.

You're right, people who have characters in the same area would have to think about how it would play out beforehand. That's reaching suspiciously into collab territory though, so perhaps it's just not a good idea.
Challenge ideas for you!

One of Us: the ordinary inhabitants of the city are all polymorphed into a picture-perfect copy of one of the various characters. For a set amount of time, all the real characters must move through the city and 'tag' people they think are the real ones by attacking them (or just touching them for less violent characters). Tagging a correct person gets a set amount of points; tagging an incorrect person obviously gives the character away, hurts the poor civilian, and delivers a lasting penalty to the character. Getting tagged is an instant disqualification, and all clones of the tagged character are restored to normal and teleported indoors.

Swap Meet: characters' minds are swapped and they are assigned some task to do, like gathering x items or defeating x monsters, while swapped. They carry over most nonphysical abilities and some other attributes; Filia swapped with Chun-li, for instance, would gain increased power (though not skill) and have Samson transposed to Chun-li's hair. On the other hand, Chun-li would be left with a normal-haired Filia body and decreased power, though she retains her Kung Fu expertise. Not all swaps would be fair; I imagine things like Twilight Sparkle / Wario and Overlord / Dizzy would be very funny. The swaps could be made using a random generator.

Diver Down: the entire City is submerged beneath an ocean. Marine flora and fauna appear, and there are plentiful ways to get air, such as trapped bubbles in alleys, buildings, phone booths, etc. Everyone's given some task to do. Naturally, some great sea monster could appear.

Heaven's Door: after an enormous rumbling, chunks of the city fall away into an infinite sky, and the remaining parts become sky islands. Finding a single hidden treasure might be good in this.

Shut Up and Drive: a massive go-karting event through the City or some great track. Characters get custom karts but any cheaty powers are inhibited. It's a race to the finish!

Born to be Wild: all characters are transformed into animal versions of themselves, with most of their same powers. Again, they're given some task to perform. Ones that are already animals don't change.

I Bet My Life: a tag-team challenge. Characters, after teleportation to some central zone, are allowed to choose their partners starting from the weakest and ending at the strongest. Once all teams have been created, they're let loose in some exotic location for a grand deathmatch. A team is eliminated if both of its members are incapacitated or one of its members is incapacitated and not revived within thirty seconds. The trick is that either character on a single team can 'bet their life' by saying so, after which they'll collapse on the spot and their teammate will receive all of their strength and powers, tailored to suit them appropriately. A team in which a member bets his or her life has an extended time to win it all before that team is counted out. Last team standing wins.

Monster: at the start of the event, all characters are moved to random locations in a new, exotic locale, and a timer begins. One person randomly becomes a much larger, more powerful, monstrous version of themselves, (for instance, Filia and Dizzy) and receives points for damage and KOs it accrues while it is the Monster. Any character who deals the finishing blow to the Monster becomes the next Monster. The challenge is not only to hold the title of Monster longest while the timer's ticking down, but to
I enjoy ice skating from time to time, but I've hurt my toes more than my other bits. Skates were super tight, just like me.
