Ferrum History

When colonists first arrived on Ferrum, they soon discovered that a Terran year of daylight followed by a year of night wasn't a terribly appealing prospect. Soon after the decision to migrate was made. After years of difficulty, eventually a two city world formed. Almost everyone on the planet would migrate between the two cities before nightfall in order to stay in the light. However, in one of these cities, heresy was brewing. Rouge traders and even Xeno scum would inhabit the city during the year of night. Over time more and more people would begin to be swayed by their influence and stay in the city for the night. When the people inevitably found out about this secret, they sought to punish the wicked. Before they could finish destroying the scum, an Inquistor arrived. After discovering that the Imperial Guard and PDF were already destroying the scum in the name of the Imperium, the Inquisitor graciously spared the innocent and only wiped out half of the planet with nuclear fire. After the dust settled and things warmed up again, the Governor sent some militants into the wastes to insure there would be no evidence of heresy left on Ferrum. After discovering signs of mutants, the Governor decided on a whim to send in a unit of Guardsmen to mop up. After six Terran months, the Guard returned, they were hardened and seemed to be far more perceptive than when they left and yet they had failed. Mutants were still roaming the wastes and thus began the tradition of the Patrol. Soldiers who went out into the wastes and returned achieved something of a heroic status. A mix of propaganda and the promise of greatness allowed Ferrum to achieve a force of all volunteers.

Short Backstory

Octavian was born on Ferrum and raised with the stories of the Patrol and their deeds. When he was 12 he joined the Imperial Youth Brigade which trained young people in survival and basic combat. At 16 he joined the PDF and after training he served up until his 18th birthday. When it arrived he began his patrol that would last for twice the normal length. Almost immediately after being dropped deep inside the wastes, he lost the single most important item to him, his compass. For a Terran year he fought and survived the harshness of the wastes until he finally managed to make it out. In recognition of his miraculous survival and exceptional fortitude, he was given the honorary title of "Long Patrolman". After a year of serving in the Imperial Guard units attached to Ferrum, he was transferred to the Ferrum Imperial Patrol. Soldiers in the Patrol were often called Rangers or Scouts but neither is quite right. The Patrol fights to win not to show how big their balls are, although they are quite large. Ferrum's production is almost solely devoted to producing the Ferrum-71 Autogun that is issued to members of the patrol. Which is the only rifle that has the capability needed by Patrolmen out in the wide Galaxy.

Being Requisitioned

Octavian had served in countless conflicts already by the time he first came in close contact with a Psyker. After a moment the Psyker realized that he was a Blank and jumped back in disgust. He was arrested just before being requisitioned by the Inquisitor. Octavian hates being away from the Patrol but he knows that the Inquisition serves a greater purpose. He is ready to do whatever is asked of him, be it reconnaissance or assassination.

HISTORY:

Not the best backstory

One of the many "Top Secret" projects that Cerberus had undertaken was the recreation of the Prothean race or at least some kind of Hybrid. After repeated failures, most funding was pulled from the project and all but the head researcher remained on staff to pursue the goal. Without a crowd and without the watchful eye of Cerberus, the head researcher began less and less humane tests on the kidnapped human subjects he was provided. After another series of failures he turned to the Batarians to buy new subjects. Among the shipment he received was a pregnant woman in the early stages. The researcher decided to implant Prothean DNA into the baby and wait it out while he turned his attention elsewhere. After 7 months Baldür was born and other than his bright orange eyes, he seemed completely normal. Disposing of the mother and placing the child in isolation, the researcher would begin years of observation that would inevitably lead to his own death. In his later years the researcher took the boy as an assistant and used him almost like a slave. Without access to regular medical checkups and without much experience in medicine, he didn't realize his heart was failing. When he finally suffered a heart attack, the boy tried to check on him but upon touching him, Baldür accidently accessed his nervous system and basically downloaded his entire life's memory in an instant.

A year later when Alliance forces arrived to investigate the facility they found Baldür reading the same set of books he had read thousands of times and eating the years of preserved rations provided to the facility. After an investigation, and the accidental skin to skin touch of a doctor, he learned everything that had been happening in the universe and immediately requested to join the Alliance military. When his pleas were finally heard, he was 18 in Terran years and after completing training in 2 weeks (due to the Prothean ability to share experiences) he was then sent for N7 training. Another week and he was deployed to fight. Two years on and while he was set to become a Spectre, the Reapers changed those plans slightly.
