Hours later, Kassy was walking down the beach with a small bad slung over her shoulder. She was humming in a breezy, happy way, and she was several hundred dollars richer. While they didn't truly need the money, Kassy wanted to give something to help the household. So far, Dimitri had yet to ask about where she went some nights. That was good - she didn't want his input.

While she moved down the beach, she was alerted to noises of people and what seemed like animals, in the dark. The sloshing of the water told her that there was a boat tied nearby. The voices were angry and forceful, and she could detect the filth and fear of the animal scents. Something was wrong here.

"Get the fucking cages, hurry up!"

"You couldn'ta picked a spot with some cover, Manny?! God, this sucks, anyone could see us!"

"No one comes on this beach at night, dumbass. Now hurry up!"

Kassy exhaled slow, and her magic masked her from sight and sound immediately. Something illegal was going on, and she was determined to stop it.

Hollow nodded to her, "This world...is an amazing and fantastical place..." Hollow kept his glowing green eyes fixed on her, he had decided that she was going to be his friend, probably his only one at this school. The thought made him smile, but that's when reality came crashing in on him with a simple question, "What sort of being are you?" He listened to the whole question as a bit of sadness filled his eyes, when people found out what he was they almost always ridiculed him, hated him, feared him. Hollow looked back into her eyes and remained motionless for a moment, "You're right...I'm not human anymore..." He held out his left hand as a green flame the color of his eyes appeared in it, "My name used to be Tyler Wentz...before I died..." he turned the green fire into a small jack-o-Lantern with a green glow coming from inside, "I was used as a human sacrifice by a sorceress in dark green...she tried to use my soul to seal away one of the oldest human spirits...Halloween..." He looked back into her eyes, "The Spirit of Halloween managed to outsmart the sorceress by funneling all of his power into my dead body...in the process I was brought back to life...But I'm still dead..." His eyes were filled with pain and worry, he knew what was coming next, she would be terrified of him, "I came back into this world as Hollow...an empty husk...and I'll be like this forever..."

Kassy listened to the entire explanation, seriousness in her eyes. She saw him shift, recognizing the posture of shame, as subtle as it was. She'd worn that sort of look a thousand times in her life. When he stopped, the look in his eyes like he was bracing for attack, Kassy couldn't contain herself.

"But you're not empty! I can promise you that." There was a determined sort of pout on her face. "My mother was a medium- she could slip between this world and the Eternal Sea. She spoke to people in that Sea, and gave relief to those they left behind. So... when you say you died, all that was you... was not lost." Realizing she was probably being too excited, she inhaled nervously and took a long drink of water.

"I understand having people fear your power, a power you never chose. And that moment when you work up the courage to tell the truth... Seeing that look, that look of someone who thinks that suddenly you're holding a knife to their throat, when you're the one getting stabbed." Shaking her head, she looked him right in the eyes. "I will tell you something true. I am not afraid of you, Tyler. Not even a bit."

Kassy looked completely happy in this moment. "Oh, yay! I like this school already. I've only eaten fish and shark and clam, but this is so much different! The texture and flavor are... indescribable, truly!" It probably looked strange to others, she realized, that she was so excited over eating. She tried to rein it in, and the sparkles started to fade a bit. She saw Mike waving at her out of the corner of her eye, and she returned the gesture with a smile. Then she looked back to Hollow, her gaze curious.

"May I ask you a question, Hollow? I... I'm not sure how to phrase it so I apologize if I offend. What sort of... of being are you? I don't think you're human. Your skin is cool, and humans don't bioluminesce like you." She stared at his glowing eyes. "It's very pretty. Green is one of my favorite colors. Are you aquatic too?"

"Well... It's gonna be interesting." She ate a few french fries, stalling for time. "The first thing we'll be learning is basic gun care and shooting. I... I don't know how I'm gonna deal with it, honestly. I'm trying to prepare and hope at the same time. So far I just can't stop thinking." She sighed faintly. "But! I'll be fine, as usual. How are your parents?"

Hollow was taken aback, he couldn't remember the last time someone had hugged him, he was shocked and despite his nature he softly returned the hug, "New to human food eh..." Hollow gave her a genuine smile as his showman side beat out the sociopath within him, "Firstly have to try Pizza..." He took her hand and led her into the lunchline and started helping her make her tray, "You're gonna want Burgers...and Fries...and macaroni...and mashed potatoes...and Ice Cream for dessert!" His eyes seemed to have softened to the girl, and for some reason he didn't feel like hurting her. He simply held onto her hand as if he had found a way out of hell and didn't want to let go.

Kassy was relived as the green-eyed boy helped her out. He piled a tray full of foods that she'd never seen before. Her stomach growled in response, and after she was led to what was definitely some magic device that conjured bright colored liquids, they sat. "I'll try this, first." She lifted what he called 'pizza' and took a bite. It was quite nice, warm and salty and chewy. "Mmmm... It's good!" She didn't want to fill up, though, so she went to the next thing. That was macaroni. It was orange and gooey, and honestly, a bit odd tasting to her. She politely ate a few bites before cutting a piece of the burger, and eating it.

"...oh." Her orange eyes went wide, and then a blissful smile appeared on her face. She picked up the burger and took a large bite, briefly revealing some rather predatory looking teeth. "Oh, this is... this is my new favorite food..." Her eyes were sparkling. Actually, in fact, the entire table was covered with tiny, multicolored motes of light. Kassy had never quite gotten the trick of keeping her power under wraps under certain circumstances. Joy was one of them; she illused lights and sometimes music. "And you all get to eat these things every day?!"

Kijani smiled at Connor, leaning across the table to kiss his cheek quickly. "Hey." She looked around the cafeteria chaos momentarily. "Crazy first day, huh? I almost forgot how alive this place was. So... how was your fighting class?"
