Garanin Stonehewer

Character Name: Garanin Stonehewer
Age: 42
Race: Dwarf
Chosen School of Magic: Enchantment, Restoration
Alignment: Neutral Good

Appearance: Garanin is a dwarf, and as such, he’s a short and stout little man. He stands at about 4’5” and weighs in around 160 pounds in smallclothes. He keeps his hair slightly shorter than seen above. His eyes are a vibrant shade of emerald green. Clothing-wise, Garanin prefers to wear unassuming clothes, typically favoring earth tones and clothing that keeps most of his rather hairy body covered. This comes from his preference for wearing armor, which he often keeps some pieces of with him. It’s not unusual for him to walk around casually with a breastplate on his chest. Every now and again, he’ll be seen with just a pauldron or a gauntlet on one arm.

Personality: Garanin’s a decent enough fellow as long as you give him a chance to get to know you. Unfortunately for some, he’s also extremely crass from his time as a soldier. Dark humor, casual insults between friends, and a generally strict demeanor makes him stand out quite a bit from even a slightly formal crowd. He can behave like a lifelong friend, slinging casual japes and downing ale one moment, to standing at attention and barking like a trained dog the next.

He describes his behaviorisms as his two ‘modes’: Serious and Not-Serious. When he gets serious about something, he’s Serious: steadfast to perhaps even a point of bullheadedness, and determined to get the job done right. When he’s not so serious…he’s Not Serious. Very much at all. He’ll joke about nearly anything from that ugly mole on his back to your latest failure at wooing a lovely tavern wench, expecting as much in return as he gives.

He treats his friends with great care, willing to go to near any lengths to defend them, but he also holds those he considers dear to him to high standards. Cheating, hurting the innocent, and otherwise acting like a “big shittin’ bell-end” will get Garanin on your case pretty darn quickly.

Character Flaws: He holds grudges for quite a while, as an opposite to his stalwart loyalty to his friends, he’s not likely to forgive a betrayal quickly. He can also take his seriousness (or lack thereof) a bit too far at times, which makes him seem a bit two-faced to some people.

Character History: Garanin is a soldier. Even now, at the Grand Arcanium, he considers himself a soldier above all else. If his people were, say, to fall under attack by some terrible marauders, he would be as likely to abandon his position at the Academy as he would be to stay. It would certainly depend upon the circumstances, but if ordered to, he would leave without a second thought.

It’s a good thing he’s officially on an extended leave while he learns the ways of Enchantment magic. His goal at the Arcanium is simply that: he is here to learn how to become a grand enchanter. When he first realized he held the Dwarven Gift, he reported to his Commander and asked what to do.

That’s why he’s here now. All of Garanin’s life up until very recently has been that of a soldier. He’s far from the greatest legendary hero in a fight, but he’s able to put any untrained whelp into the ground as well. His tutelage in magic is far behind what might be expected of a student of the Arcanium, but he believes his raw talent and drive to learn Enchantment will be reason enough to keep him around.

That works just fine. The school is fine with all people trying to wield magic regardless if they're full blown mages or not, just don't expect there to be anyone to train you with a sword.

My final question would put that to bed, actually: should all the students be relatively young (college-aged by human standards) or would it be alright, if a bit odd, that a relatively older character (mid 40's-50's's dwarf) came to join the school?

Kinda wing'n it honestly. Not everyone is familiar with DnD so I'm honestly playing it pretty loose with the rules here. I'm trying not to alienate anyone not familiar with any particular thing you know? If you want my advice, Ill say go with Elder Scrolls since it's a bit simplified there and gives you a broad niche. You can be a paladin if you accept the fact that in this world every god is just wishful thinking except for 3 that have been lost to time. Nobody knows about the true gods at all. As long as you're cool with having a fake pantheon your character is using as their primary faith, go for it. Though I will say this since I just did a speech about power balance, strong with the sword weaker with magic, strong with magic you're a weaker fighter with the sword. We have to maintain character balance.

Nah, I'm gonna try to go Facetank Paladin with magic as more of a booster for his combat skills. He's mostly here to learn about enchanting, because magic gear yo.

So this was it, huh? Two weeks was all he got? Sapphire was leaving Beacon. Leaving them all. Leaving him. He didn't know why it felt this way. He realized that there had been something there, but he wasn't sure if it was reciprocated, if it was worth pursuing, or if it had just been an idle fancy.

He'd never know now, really, so what did it matter? And what she was saying to Gren? 'What kind of a huntress would I be if I couldn't look after those closest to me?' That almost physically hurt him. It was a question he'd asked himself more times than he could count. What kind of a leader, what kind of a FRIEND leaves his teammates to die while he drags a broken girl back to safety?

He steeled himself before his self-loathing could take over again. He'd done his best. It just hadn't been enough. That was the reason he was here. To be better.

And then Sapphire asked for a moment. As Gren left, Oswald turned to Sapphire with the most composed look he could give. Between his broken bones and the frustration he was feeling, it probably looked like shit, though.

Taking Sapphire's hand lightly, he gave her a polite shake as she finished what she had to say.

Demetra said he was lost, huh? That....wasn't the word he'd use to describe himself, but it wasn't horribly inaccurate or anything, either. He felt more overwhelmed than lost. He had a goal, he just...was too deep in the shit to reach it without help.

"For what it's worth....I should've kicked your ass that first day." A half-cocked smile and a joking boast was all he could offer. He felt too burned out to say anything of substance, but before he could let her leave, there was one thing he had to say. One thing she needed to here. "Make sure you cherish every fucking second you have with that girl, Sapphire. Because one day you might wake up, and she might be gone. Don't end up like me, wondering what else you could've done. Help her. Let her help herself. And just...just love her."

He had nothing else to say. He didn't need a response. This wasn't a conversation. "Goodbye. And thank you."

It was an ending.

Oswald came back to the classroom glassy-eyed and looking even weaker than he'd left it. Inside, he wasn't sure what to feel. So he was just...empty.

Taking a seat, Oswald looked at what he and Gren had been doing before Sapphire showed up. Right. Blades.

He remembered saying something. He just wasn't sure what.

He couldn't bring himself to care much, actually. "So....what next?"
