There were only a few people sitting around in the cafeteria when Cari entered through the large double doors and moved towards the meal counter. As routine she always made an effort to eat her fill before or after the crowd of 'maggots', as named by one particular crew member, appeared. This was mostly due to the public's reaction when they saw her exposed face; a look of curiosity, a look of uncertainty, a stare that often left her unwilling to finish off her meals. As she walked towards the counter and skimmed across the front of the serveries, she picked up anything that looked mildly attractive. Meat, vegetables, bread, it didn't really bother her what each serving contained. She just simply took her fair share and made her way over to one of the tables closest to the side of the room, ensuring that she sat in a chair that faced the wall.
Cari pulled down her bandanna and picked up the cutlery, holding them in the proper manner as she began to slice up her meal and lift each portion into her mouth. She felt it enter her lips and let it float around between her grinding teeth and tongue, but sadly tasted nothing. The engineers that gave her this new body did everything they could to revive her sense of touch after her accident, but the sense of taste was something deemed too difficult to perfect. Any attempts they made only resulted in the taste of metal, the metal that filled the lower half of her face.
Steadily the noise in the cafeteria began to rise as more and more people piled into the room. Cari placed her utensils on the plate, wiped her mouth and pushed the meal away from her before lifting her bandanna back into place. She sat there quietly and closed her eyes, zoning out from the activity in the room waiting for it to eventually leave. A couple of moments passed when the smashing sound of serving tray being forcefully placed down broke Cari out of her trance. Her eyes shot open only to see a small collection of young men sitting both opposite, and beside her.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake up sleeping beauty," the cynical male opposite her spoke out, knowing full well that his noisy racket got a reaction out of her. She sat there silently staring back, "I gotta say... I do like the colour of your hair. It matches your eyes. Turquoise? Cyan? I dunno, what do you think?"
The male turned to one of his associates and awaited his response, "Um, It looks blue to me..."
"That's cause you're a fucken idiot!" His attitude changed dramatically in a way that showed his dominance above these fellow crew members all while lifting his hand to give a quick backhanded slap across the side of his mate's head, "If you want to show a 'woman' that she is a beautiful object of desire then you have to broaden your vocabulary!" Taking a deep breath he turned back to Cari, "I'm sorry about letting you see that. Here's the thing... We all know this is going to be a loonng journey, and me and the boys have certain neeeds that we occasionally want filled..."
She chuckled slightly, interrupting him, and lifted her hand to cover her face much like a teenager hiding a dirty secret. She looked at the male with wanting eyes allowing him to lean forward in anticipation for an answer... and that's when she made her move.
Cari flicked the bandanna down with her index finder, kicked the chair she was sitting on out of the way and was standing up over the edge of the table before the others had a chance to react. Her hands slammed down on the hard surface and as she suddenly lowered her face she gave her jaw a mighty, loud, SNAP! Instantly the male pulled back, rocking on his chair to the point where he almost fell arse over tit. He looked at her in shock, seeing her grin with the bright, metallic teeth surrounded by black lips and sheets of metal.
"AAAAATEEEENSHUUUN CREWWW! CAAAAAAPTAIIIN ON DECK!"
Cari pulled back slowly and turned to face the balcony where the captain was making his speech. For the second time in that cafeteria she pulled her bandanna back into place and then proceeded to salute the captain, all while grinning like a child under the sheet of fabric knowing full well that she more than likely made a fellow new recruit, who thought he was king shit, piss his pants.
