Ah yes, bought up some very good points and I can understand the dense population with high rise buildings being very different to the large properties that one could have in the US and Australia. I remember when I was in Japan and I used their rail network how reliable and useful it was to get around. Here in sydney City Rail is nicknamed City Fail because it's lack of reliable services with some trains being 10 minutes late, the constant interruptions with repairs and the lack of services. North West Sydney is one of the biggest areas that is growing and yet it won't get it's first Rail network for the next few years, so every day thousands of Cars travel on expensive toll roads and sit in traffic jams to get to work.

Admittedly this is a part of Roleplaying where you are playing into a different environment and learning about that world, but a person's lack of personal experience outside their own environment does create some misunderstandings as to why certain things are the way they are.
This is a little thing I notice, but it's not really a major issue, more like an annoyed concern...

So I've come to notice how some RPs are created with an American feel to them, some more than others. This can be from the freedom of gun weapons in RPs, to the way cities and vehicles are described, and even references to historic events like the declaration of independence, presidential leaders or even the seasonal school structure and school design layout.

Its nothing "wrong" with these choices as each rp caters to a different audience but as someone who is not from the US, God damn it can be hard to participate in some of these RPs.

For instance, I tried to participate into a school rp once. Now Australian schools go from year 1-6 primary, 7-12 secondary. We start school in Feb and end in Dec. So each year matches up with each year on the calendar. The idea of starting school mid year and finishing, mid year the next year, while having different schools for lower high schools and upper high schools and all that stuff is so foreign to me, that I cannot physically understand why.

The other part with weapons is that I've never grown up around guns. I know about guns through movies and games, so I have yet to see a role play where having a gun is actually a criminal offense and people have to watch their ammo usage because you cannot walk down to your local shop and restock supplies.

This isn't a rip on Americans as I do have a lot of American friends, but so many modern RPs seem to be set or influenced by the American culture that as an Australian I do notice, and it can sometimes break immersion as even if I try to create an American character, it can sometimes feel like the foreigner.
Alyon looked up at the bar tender and shot him a concerned look before blurting out, "Who gave you this letter?!" Instantly her head started to fill with images of the one that Fraya killed in the Crypt, wondering if this message was somehow linked to them.

The man was struck by the sudden outburst and taken back by her change in attitude, "I only received it with our regular mail. I am sorry but I do not know who the sender was!"

Alyon could see in his expression that he was more than likely telling the truth, leaving her to simply curse under her breath and slam her fist on the table, scrunching the letter within her grasps. Carefully the man leaned over out of curiosity and gently slipped the paper from her grip to evaluate what it was that got Alyon so worked up.

"If you do not mind me asking, who would this eye be that is referenced in this letter?" His question was soft, as if trying to perform his barman magic of helping a patron resolve their deepest dilemmas.

"The only eye I know of was from a man who's eye glowed red. Tolkin, Toskin, Token? Ak... What was his name?" Alyon bought her fingers up to the bridge of her nose and pinched them gently, trying to remember who the unusual man was before taking a sip of her alcohol.

The bar tender topped up her glass before offering some advice, "From the many stories I have heard on this train, the man with the glowing eye is one of the most peculiar ones. He only seems to appear when Hunters and Artifacts are involved. Rumour has it that he already has an artifact of his own and that he is looking to obtain as many as possible."

Alyon glanced back at the bar tender offering a curious look, only to hear him reply, "That is everything I know." before turning to clean up some of the used glassware.

"Thank you," Alyon replied before grabbing her drink and turning to go back to the VIP suite. I'm gonna have to talk to Fraya about this.

I feel you - and personally there's a huge difference between typing casually (yo bud, sorry busy today) and liek tis wut i dun evn gt y sho lazy cnt txt prply oi.

If you're too lazy to type properly, then I'm too lazy to waste my time cracking my poor brain to read your crappy typo. Duh.

And if seeing that in social media messages isn't bad enough, there are even people are writing stories (fan fictions and also original works) exactly like that.

Not just English - even other languages like Chinese and Japanese too. I can't keep up with all these modern language trends - and I don't get the hype behind them either.

I know a fair few schools are failing students for txt-tlk use in exams, assignments and essays. Sadly though, the trend started with people trying to fit a message into a limited character space on the old Nokia phones in order to save money on pre paid plans, and it's just evolved to what it has become now.

Funny how technology seems to make more people stupid to so many things...
@Hellis I might wait to see what you have in mind to see what reaction the beast has to me glomping it. Maybe I can kill it with luv.

Re: Trash conversations not being open to replies: What of conversations with n>2 people where one person might want to drop out, but the remaining n-1 wish to continue talking?

Maybe it stops updating for the one that dropped and prevents replies from being submitted? Like a white list feature that you have oped out of.
@Lady Amalthea you could also find that the person is perhaps bored with 1 RP and wants to join another, but is too gutless to just leave or say, "maybe this isn't my thing".

Got a few general enquiries for the new PM management system that I've been thinking about as I know that some of these questions and things may come up.

  • When a thread is moved to the trash pile and eventually given the option to delete.
    - What will happen to that thread on the other person's end? Will it be as if it is hidden on the deleted end, but still visible on the other end?
    - If this is the case, what would happen if the second person was to reply? (I'm assuming it still remains open to replies) Would the thread be revived back into the inbox?
    - If it doesn't remain open, I do think that would be weird as you could be having a conversation with someone and a deleted thread would signal a rather abrupt end to the conversation.
  • With the folders, how necessary is the need for creating custom folders. Would another and possibly easier option is to have a limited number (eg 10) of folders and then give the ability to just change the title of everything aside from Trash, Inbox and Archive. It would also prevent people from going through and creating 50 different folders and force people to manage their messages better. We have a limited number of boards on the forum that we have to work with so I don't see why that same logic can't be applied to PMs.
