“Lad, what’s your name? My team are here to help the locals and that includes you. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? How you became like this? Where are the other locals? Perhaps you can tell us a bit more about the forest and your beloved.”
Medivac

"M-my n-name is pretty h-hard to s-say if you a-aren't from h-here. J-just call me t-the Musician. I-I'm the o-only musician i-in Riventor so I c-can claim the n-name." The Musician answered the first question. "The Cursed Rock appeared o-on my skin one d-day. T-The main village then started to stink f-for me and my family, s-so we built a s-small house in the s-swamps. Ever s-since, my Sickness has g-gotten worse. M-My father gave me this beautiful m-mask, so I could be healed of my afllictions. Maybe you could have one too..."

"T-The forest is alive, mister and miss. E-evil too. Dark t-things lurk within t-the woods, and lures in hapless p-people who are never seen again. B-Best to stay away from it, o-or at least don't get l-lost in it." His description was more of a warning.

“If you live around here, then maybe you know this gal I’m carrying? You know a spot where we can leave her safely behind? Her home burnt down."
Radiant

"O-Oh, I know her. I-I don't know her name, but I know t-that the villagers burnt her home down a-and killed her spouse because she g-gave birth to a-a monster." The Musician revealed. "T-They threw the baby down their w-well, I believe, before sealing it up." It appeared taking her to the town might not be a good idea. "M-Maybe you could leave h-her with the Chicken L-lady, but she i-isn't very welcoming."

Yes! The strike succeeded, drawing black blood from its abdomen! It stumbled backwards and allowed Nick to flee unimpeded. There were a couple others on his way but he weaved through them without much problem. The exit was there, it was close!

But alas, he was cut off. Another creature blocked him off, coming at Nick from the left with a loud growl. It swung its blade but Nick moved out of the way at the last moment, his side grazed by the weapon. He felt pain, but there was no time to check. The creature in front of him was the only barrier from the exit, and doubtless the other creatues behind him were catching up.

No! He was so close, this wretched experiment had to ruin it all! Was this gonna be it for Nicholas Gallagher? Dying not even a day passing in this new world? No, he had to get home! This was a second chance at life provided to him! He cannot let it go to waste! Fear boiled into anger which then turned into action. With fire in his eyes and adrenaline in his blood, Nick let out a scream and charged at the creature in his way.

He had no plan to attack though, Nick was going to wait for the creature to make the first move. If it goes for another swing, which Nick believed it probably would, he would swat it away with his blade and use the opening to seize the creature by the neck and hips before lifting it into the air and then throwing it at its equally wretched brothers. Nick would summon all his strength for this action. He would need to, he was not falling down here!

Should his plan work, Nick would resume his course to the exit. To safety.

"Sir, I am Medivac from the Haynek Institute and I am here to help. In order to do that, I require your assistance. Now, I want you to take deep breaths, ok? Deep breathes. Breathe in, breathe out. Good, good. Are you feeling a bit better? Calmed your nerves? Are you hurt anywhere? What is your name? Do you live close by?"
Medivac

"Good sir, I assure you we are the two bravest individuals you'll see today, Can you tell us more about this Chicken Lady and Pretty Lady? Were you kicked out trying to play a song for someone dear to you?"
Radiant

"So kind, s-so very k-kind... Y-you two are just like h-him... My d-daddy! But... My papa has changed, m-mister and miss. Just l-like my mommy. They will not l-listen to me, they w-won't hear how sad I am, sir..." That was the boy's sole response before Medivac pulled Radiant aside to discusse their next course of action.

With the boy reassured that neither of the Operators were harmful to him, he emerged from the tractor. His appearance was horrible, beyond horrible. The clothes he wore were normal, a dark blue shirt and a pair of gray trousers. It was his body that was disturbing, it appeared to be decomposing. The skin on his head were sloughing off, only a few strands of dead hair remained. His mouth had mostly lost its lips and his ears were on the verge of falling off. A small, white smiling mask with a long, cute nose attempted to hide the deformities, but it was too small and covered little.

In his gnarled, rotting hands was a broken violin. "T-The Chicken L-Lady owns a l-lot of chickens... Lots! S-She lets them r-run around h-her house. S-She doesn't want t-to share them with a-anyone... k-keeps them to h-herself like t-the Pretty Lady. Some o-of the other v-villagers sometimes t-try to chase one of t-the chickens... but they a-always run to t-the forest... a-and no one g-goes to the f-forest." The boy answered Radiant's question. "A-And the Pretty Lady i-is very beautiful! I-I fished out h-her shawl d-during the w-winter solstice... D-Do you know w-what that means? Oh yes, I will become the Pretty L-lady's husband! We w-will walk hand in hand, m-ma'am. I will play for her, mister a-and miss.

The boy was happy to be answering the Operators's questions. Although it appeared he had trouble even standing up, his form was hunched and he seemed to have trouble breathing. Looking closely, there appeared to be very severe Originium growths beneath his clothes. He was clearly infected, but was this typical symptoms of Oripathy?

THE DARK WOODS

-

Hello and welcome to the Haynek Institute Of Research. Unlike typical scientific organizations, the Haynek Institute focuses less on indoor laboratories and facilities and more on field research and the great outdoors. As such, we boast the most up-to-date technology and equipment for on-site research and surveillance.

Because of the focus of our work, it is no surprise that most of our members are comprised of Catastrophe Messengers and explorers. We may not be as renowned and famous as the likes of Rhine Lab or Rhodes Island but the data we gather and the work we do is invaluable and used by organizations and countries all across Terra. We even sometimes collaborate with other scientific organizations on special research projects.

We will be honest with you, this line of work is fraught with danger. Most of the research involves Originium found in the wild, which are unrefined and potentially infectious, and the Catastrophes that plague this world. We ensure that all members rigorously practice safety procedures during any sort of research but we must acknowledge that things happen and casualties are had in the field. Again, we warn you of the dangers of the jobs in Haynek Institute.

And so our motto goes, Always Stay Safe!
Any mockery of the motto's acronym is grounds for termination

---------

Greetings Operator! The Haynek Institute thanks you for your continued service to the organization, but the work is never over! You have been selected, along with others, to take part in another research operation. This endeavor will take you to the remote forests of Kazimierz, the land of Knights and chivalry.

This operation is concerned with strange reports of Originium activity in the village of Riventor, one of the many isolated villages in the Kazimierz countryside. Not much is known about Riventor, only that it is self-sufficient and is more isolated than the other villages. Riventor rarely comes out to trade and there are no remarkable locations near it so it does not get many visitors.

However, aerial surveillance reveals that there are Originium deposits in the forests around Riventor. But the strange part is, these Originium deposits seem to change size or outright disappear every time the aerial surveillance takes photos. The inconsistency of the results appear to stem from the inclement weather over the village.

That is why we are sending a ground team to confirm the presence of the Originium and determine its true properties. The consistent bad weather over the village may also be a sign for a possible oncoming Catastrophe so that should also be investigated too.

Good luck and don't forget, Always Stay Safe! Any mockery of the motto's acronym is grounds for termination

Ada, with a twist of her body and a swing of her mighty tail right at the gut, knocked the wind out of the restrained Kikimora. The blow immediately put her unconscious and, like the other Kikimora, her form faded into mist which traveled to the Kikimora holding Ditzy hostage. "Good job, little one!" Sir Reed gave her a thumbs up.

Now there was only one Kikimora to deal with.

"If he doesn't feel the same way, I know it hurts. I can only imagine, but don't you deserve someone who feels the same way about you? Someone whose willing to go through all this nonsense for you? Someone that wants to go with you?"
Ozzy Skyway

"You've no idea what I've gone through, Harpy boy!" The Kikimora snapped back. "Noble, gallant Sir Nero has saved me from nasty bandits and it was that time that I knew he was my destined. Yet, he refuses all of my advances. Years I have courted him, tried to comfort him from his dark past but he tells me he is not worthy of my love. Well, I care not if he's worthy, it is my love to give!" The Kikimora was pouring her heart out in the impassioned speech.

"And lately, he's been wanting to go and throw his life away fighting Varjans." She cast an accusing glare at Yang. "He had already narrowly escaped death during his last great battle against them. And now, he intends to risk his life again!"

Nick climbed the staircase back up as fast as he could, his danger senses spiking. No reason to stop now, each step he took got him closer to the courtyard and to safety and far, far away from this black, gooey tar whose appearance should've clued in that it was something that shouldn't be messed with.

Once he reached the top, the dread was overwhelming him now. The hallway they were in earlier that was filled with those tar-covered corpses were beginning to stir. They rose up as thralls of the black tar, not that they weren't harmless to begin with. Nick only had that sword from earlier during the fight where Donovan appeared. He did not even know how to use that sword, only that the pointy end goes to the bad guys.

The tar-covered wretched experiment approached, on his arm was a sharp, plant-like blade that it swung at Nick. It was aimed at his neck but Nick quickly crouched down to evade, more on frightened reflex than any sort of fighting skill. Adrenaline rushed through his body as he tried to fight back, swinging his sword wildly at the creature. At the very least, the attack would throw it off him.

There was a lot of them between him and the exit, but he cannot fight all of them nor let himself get pinned down. The options were few and time was running out, it was now or never. If he managed to kill or beat back the first attacker, Nick would attempt to dash straight through the creatures and push them away if he needed to. He hoped these things would be slow like the others, which would make them easier to dodge and weave through.

"Okay...I gotta ask....Why? Why go through so much trouble, huh? At this point, your escape plan is utterly doomed and the town guard is probably on their way here as we speak. Is Nero really worth all of this drama?"
Kira Gigas

Kira's wind spell gave her distance from the Kikimora who induleged the Beelzebub's question. "Of course." She answered without hesitation. "If you find yourself in love, Beelzebub, you would understand. I will even wager that you will do the same as I did."

The Kikimora facing Kira was ready to strike again, but then she hesitated. A sinking feeling fell over her and she turned to see Ditzy with the bound and gagged Nero, running towards his group and away from her reach. The maid monster promptly ignored the Beelzebub and dashed straight for the male Hobgoblin.

Freyr would see this and fired arrows at the Kikimora that was onto Ditzy. The maid monster narrowly evaded each arrow so far but just when the Viera had a bead on her, he was hit in the arms by an arnis stick. Thrown by the Kikimora who was fighting Ada and Sir Reed, breaking away from the fight to aid the fellow maid monster.

But this gave the knight the opening he needed to lock the Kikimora's arms beind her. "Finish her off, little one!" Sir Reed called to Ada. The Kikimora struggled hard but Reed had her pinned for now. "A solid punch to her gut, or her face. Anything to knock her out! Hurry!"

Meanwhile, Ozzy had caught the Kikimora attacking Margaret by surprise. The maid monster was lifted from the ground and was indisposed for the time being.

"Margaret, you okay?"
Ozzy Skyway

"I'm quite fine, Mister Ozzy." The Owl Mage replied as she got up. She aimeda wing at the immobilized Kikimora, ready to finish her off with a spell. The Kikimora struggled but a beam of white light shot out of Margaret's wing that struck her in the head. Suddenly, the Kikimora fell asleep. A sleeping spell was used, it seems.

However, the Kikimora then began to fade away as Ozzy felt his grip on her form disappearing. The maid monster faded until she was a mist that then traveled straight towards the Kikimora heading towards Ditzy.

The same happened with the Kikimora that received a powerful kick to her torso, courtesy of Yang. She was sent to the ground, but she got up. Clutching her body and gritting her teeth in pain, but not out of the fight yet The durability of monsters was truly amazing. However, Talia appeared behind her, turned her around and received a nasty headbutt from the mighty Cyclops. The knocked out Kikimora then faded into mist that then traveled away.

"Ditzy!" Haley yelled.

The Hobgoblin was in trouble. He was kicked away by the Kikimora which released his grip on the captive Nero. He was then brought up and had his hands quickly tied up with rope behind him as well as his feet. The maid monster sure was fast to be able to do all of that in record time.

The Kikimora held Ditzy in front of her, intending to use him as a shield against his allies' attacks. "I propose an exchange! Let me go with Nero, and you can have your friend" Her face was of grim determination and desperation. A serious scowl, backed into the corner. The two mists from the fallen Kikimora entered her, but she ignored this development.

"We over-reacted. Didn't want one of our friends getting abducted."
Vivian Altissima

"Oh, that's fine. Totally understandable." Neil forgave being suddenly hoisted by up by the Altissima sisters. "Although, I don't think I'm a target. I think she's just after Sir Nero for whatever reason."

Seeing that the Liliraune was pushing the cart, Neil immediately offered his help. And he wasn't taking a 'no'. "Come on, now. No need to do that. Let me push you two." The Altissima sisters might protest but Neil would shoot that down. "Don't worry about me. I've gotten quite used to this." He then sighed. "I'm just worried how this'll affect my surprise for you two."

"Oh crap, me and my big mouth." Neil reprimanded himself as his face flushed. "Uhh, yeah. I was planning a surprise for the two of you. I-I hope you'll like it... Err, you'll probably like it."
@Rune_Alchemist

Spotted an opportunity for wackiness so I've kind of modified the scenario a bit. Let me know if I'm not allowed to do that.

Despite his protests, the party continued on. Nick really didn't want to head down further but he couldn't just leave these people behind, even if they were heading to certain doom. He lagged behind them as they descended, wary of the black tar-like substance that was abundant in this place. "Shouldn't be doing this, shouldn't be doing this..." He repeated to himself and clutching the harmless blade he had as hard as he could.

His eyes darted all over the place, waiting for anything to happen. That was the worst part of it all, the tense waiting. Nick knew something was going to happen to them here but they didn't know what or when or how. Each step Nick took, the other guys had already taken five. But he didn't notice, too occupied in his paranoia as he descended the staircase. The other three were already way past the staircase bottom when he arrived there.

Nick heard the sounds of rushing water and saw his three other companions standing and probably admiring whatever it was that was there. He moved to join them but suddenly, the ground shook as black vines began growing over the staircase exit. Nick quickly backed away before realizing that he was now separated from the rest of the group. In this place that ticked off his anxiety powers. Surrounded by probably evil goo. And as defenseless as a newborn babe.

"Interesting. Very interesting." Nick muttered, amused.

A figure dashed upwards the staircase, frantically trying to get away from this place as fast as he could. Nick should've figured something like this would happen. He felt bad not noting his companions that he was hauling ass, but they'd understand right? There was little he could do down there, save for trying to hack away the vines with the old blade. Nick hoped they would be alright down there, though.

He would try to make it back to that courtyard they were in earlier, no longer caring if the black tar was growing all around him as he fled. Now that he was alone, it was up to him on what to do next in this alien world. Troubling, Nick thought but enough about that, he needed to get to safety first.
