@Gardevoiran

I very much expected to have longer to plan this event from the vague concept in my head, but you just had to go back immediately, hah.

And, well.

@hatakekuro

Decently simple post. Did you and Anise have any agreements or something? Did you want to stick with her? I can make some excuses if you'd like a companion. She's going momentarily home, but you can wait for her to get back. Or, you can head off solo again, hah.

@Rune_Alchemist

So, the coincidence was... I knew what kind of battle Cathia would request. At a time where you'd intentionally hidden your Pokémon, I assume to keep her from recognizing them? It amuses me, hah.

You're free to interrupt her speech with whatever you want to say, if you want.

And, of course. The whole event with Skylar over there is happening in the same town as you. You can notice, if you wish.
@Gardevoiran

It turns out that the commotion at the lab was most of the inhabitants of the lab leaving said lab. Dunstan and Leila among them. The scientist that was in charge of resurrecting fossils walked by Skylar as he came to ask his question, and…

'What? You’re concerned about that stuff, at a time like this!?’ Resurrection dude said, albeit maybe with the change of circumstances Skylar wouldn’t actually ask about that. 'Come on! There’s a historic occasion to witness! Let’s be on our way!’

With that, the whole group of scientists were heading off through Raremine Town. With the assumption that Skylar would head along (this plot kinda won’t progress if he doesn’t) he’d find that they were heading out of Raremine Town, off north. If you look at a map of Isson, do you see that there’s actually a river going inland right above Raremine Town? Logically, it was emerging from some underground channel or something.

Well, there was a gigantic pirate ship on that river. Flying the crossbones, piraty crew, captain standing grinning at the helm. There was absolutely zero doubt. Now, unsure if Skylar had some particular way of noticing that there was a pirate ship there, but some scientist could probably fill him in.

Standing at the helm was, alongside his giant ice-bear…!

Oh, and Zachery’s two female helpers were probably around here somewhere, too.

Approaching the ship were Dunstan and Leila, the chief scientist on legendary Pokémon, and the representative of the scientists at Raremine Town, albeit she herself wasn’t a scientist. Just a really powerful Pokémon trainer.

‘Ahoy, there, Dunstan!’ Zachery called with an energetic tone. ‘I got the thing you wanted! Special delivery, straight to you! Am I doing a good job, or what!?’ he called, chuckling as he did.

‘You’re doing excellently. Thank you, Zachery.’ Dunstan. Leila meanwhile took out a Pokéball, and a Pidgeot emerged.

Pokédex Entry #18 – Pidgeot, the Bird Pokémon. This Pokémon is known to fly at 1000 meters height to spot Magikarp over water before soaring down to catch. It is capable of flying at Mach 2. If threatened, it spreads its wings to appear intimidating, and if that doesn’t work it can unleash gusts capable of bending trees.

‘Help with the preparations, Perseus,’ Leila commanded, and the Pidgeot took off.

“Preparations” turned out to be lifting out a giant wooden ramp that Perseus the Pidgeot and the Beartic cooperated to place from the ship to the ground beneath. Then, they went over and started carrying something else. A giant cargo-crate, slowly carried down from the ship while crew and scientists were all eagerly watching.

‘Finally, an ace which I can call my own,’ Dunstan muttered. Probably not actually heard by anyone, as he watched the container reach the land before him. ‘I’ll have to thank the Aether Foundation for this. Perhaps, with this, I’ll be able to…’

However, his talk was cut short by the ground suddenly starting to shake.

Suddenly breaking through the ground were suddenly a bunch of Ground-type Pokémon, emerging around the startled scientists. Leila immediately got a very annoyed expression as she turned towards the place where her very own rival came out of the ground, while Dunstan ran for the crate as if to protect it and Zachery just stood looking surprised. The Pidgeot and the Beartic released the crate and it fell onto the ground with a somewhat loud impact.

‘Heeeeey, there, Leila!’ Kristy said, smirking from atop her Claydol, right above the hole she just created, and Leila was confronting her. ‘You know, for someone claiming to not be smuggling Pokémon, this sure doesn’t look good!’

Now, I don’t expect anyone to remember, but these two have a history.

‘Kristy! You know fully well who Zachery is! This is a perfectly normal transaction! Believe me, you do NOT want to mess with us right now!’ Leila shouted at Kristy.

‘Ma’am, you can call this a lot of things, but there’s absolutely nothing normal about it!’ Kristy chuckled. ‘Unfortunately, a lot of sneaky deals have been going on around Raremine lately, and I’d like to know what’s going on. You wouldn’t mind showing me, would you? As a token of trust?’

‘Not a chance! You’ve attacked our transport trucks too many times in the past! We have no reason to trust you!’ Leila answered.

‘Only because we were pretty sure those were illegitimate transports. I have no idea what this is. Please show me?’

While the two of them were arguing, a loud crack was heard from the crate that had been carried down. Kristy and Leila continued their squabbling, but Dunstan, far too concerned about the crate, turned and started pressing a couple buttons on the futuristic Aether Foundation crate, it started opening up. And… on the inside was…

‘NO!’ Dunstan shouted out. For those who had a good view… the bottom of the crate was breached. Something had dug in, snatched the contents of the crate, and then sealed the hole behind them.

Leila spun, noticed the state, and then spun to stare in an absolute rage at Kristy… who looked confused.

‘Eh? What? What happened?’ Kristy asked, and- ‘WOA-’ As if responding to Leila’s feelings, Perseus the Pidgeot shot a sharp gust of wind, forcing Kristy to jump off the Claydol. Claydol took the wind-hit, and shot a Psychic attack back at Pidgeot… and while that happened Kristy ran so she could get a view inside the crate. She stopped as soon as she got close enough, running by Leila in the process.

‘Oh!’ Kristy made a noise of realization of the discovery, eyes widening a bit. She started reaching for her other Pokéballs. ‘Alright, let me release my Ground-type Pokémon, and-’

SNAP. ‘Wha-’

The tail of a dark snake suddenly lashed out, snatching Kristy’s arms from behind, tying them up and causing the Gym Leader to fall forward, falling restrained onto the ground.

One of the scientists… took off her hat and coat and suddenly didn’t at all look like a scientist anymore.

‘I was told to keep watch in case anything suspicious happened… I didn’t expect this, however,’ a girl with very purple hair said. Numerous what appeared to be police-officers also showed up right about now to restrain the other Ground-type Pokémon that had appeared with their Growlithes.

‘Geesh, Sylvia! I know you like your secret police stuff, but I need to use my Ground-type Pokémon to see where the REAL criminals went…!’ Kristy complained to the girl, apparently named Sylvia, who had her Seviper restraining her.

‘I’m sorry, Kristy,’ Sylvia shook her head. ‘But I’m not about to let a primary suspect search for the criminal,’ she said. Kristy groaned in light annoyance and tried to shake herself free, but turned out the Seviper was really good at restraining.

‘You brought this on yourself,’ Leila scoffed at her. ‘But how are we going to find them now!?’ she called. Meanwhile, Dunstan was just collapsed by the crate, and Zachery was scratching his head under his hat with his hook-hand. Had the enemy gone undersea, he could have helped, but underground…

‘That is…’ Sylvia frowned, for she didn’t have a good answer to the question…

That’s when Skylar felt some shaking from right underneath him. Specifically, the shaking was traveling from away from the crate, under him, and then on the way back towards Raremine Town.

In fact, Seabreeze with his Keen Eye might actually spot the minor movements of small pebbles or other things on the way to actively follow where the digging was taking it.

What would Skylar like to do?

It might be hard to continue the Gym Challenge while Kristy’s like this.

Also, if you want your price, probably don’t bring everyone. No time, or something.

It was honestly a short and easy enough trip to get out of the rain and get back to Highhill Town. It looks the same as it did, but now the Freecape Ferrymen Office was open. And, as promised, there were three options of trading to get Pokémon from outside Isson… read the bottom of the suggestions to actions for details.

‘Okay. What’s your plan, now?’ Anise asks, as she needs to head back to Redcoast City to prepare for her own Pokémon adventure that she intends to depart on. She did tell Basil this earlier. She was just okay with going back to Highhill first because it was a lot easier than going straight through Silent Forest.

What will Basil do now?

Cathia visibly flinched when Claire slid in beside her, and gathered up the papers in a hurry before looking towards Claire with a startled expression. She recovered quickly enough, returning to her regular supposedly graceful expression…

‘Oh, you’re… yes, I do seem to remember,’ Cathia said, taking Claire’s hand as offered. ‘I’m Cathia. And… I’m not sure I can battle right now…’ Cathia said, looking down at the papers. She then looked up at Claire. Now, Claire could totally say something about this or interrupt Cathia’s speech, but…

‘You’ll do. I’m going to unload a little,’ Cathia said, before picking up the papers again and reading them. ‘So, as we speak, there’s a Team Amethyst base right below Raremine Town. Sure, we can invade it, but the problem is, it’s done. They’ve already achieved their goal here.’

‘They stole many… MANY ancient Pokémon, resurrected from fossils or mined out of the ice of Frozen Caverns. They did so in a manner that made the two factions of Raremine Town, the scientists and the workers, led by Leila and Kristy respectively, think the other side was to blame. Their intentions were to find the cells of ancient Legendary Pokémon, hidden within the fossils or bodies of these should-have-been long-dead Pokémon… and they succeeded,’ Cathia said, holding out a paper that described a vial filled with…

‘The cells of the lifegiving Pokémon… they’ve found them. Of course… it doesn’t say what they’re going to use them for. Something about using them to find the real thing, but that’s not all. I can but theorize what they’ll do with them…’ She sighed. ‘I should tell someone, but Amethyst is notoriously brilliant at escaping when Pokémon League people try to hunt them down. Almost like if…’ Cathia shook her head.

‘I’m sorry. That was not your problem to hear. I am alright with having a battle. Maybe I could use it to calm my nerves. I prefer fighting with open display rules. We both show each other our whole teams before we start.’ If there’s a better term for the kind of fighting where you know the species of the opponent’s team beforehand, please, the GM wants to know. ‘Does that work with you?’ Cathia asked, sorting the documents into her bag before standing up to make ready. Assumingly, she too had gone to the Pokémon Center.

Did Claire interrupt anywhere in that or let her say all that? Does she want to do something herself? also, a note. Cathia’s team is pretty strong, as per what you saw underground

I was excited, so I posted.

And, now that 1/3 of all generations have taken place AFTER the creation of this roleplay, I felt it appropriate to increase the amount of methods of getting post-ORAS Pokémon. If you don't want any of those, then you can simply not. Otherwise, go for it. I have no idea if any of you will actually use this new "trading" feature, but what the heck, why not. You can always ask Kalmia where to obtain the Pokémon you need for a specific trade.

Oh, and the Freecape Ferrymen, originally only intended to be available when you reach Freecape Town, is now available everywhere. Nobody has reached Freecape Town yet, hahahaha.

Do tell me if you have objections or suggestions or so. Otherwise, at it.

@Typical
Nicely posted. And yes, I remember what we talked about before my absence. I will admit to not being able to find my ideas for the trainer for Eri, though, hah.

I do remember that you asked for me to write down the genders of the Pokémon you encounter so you can see them. Well, here you go. If you'd rather they be male, it is not important enough for me and I can change it on a whim, honestly. Otherwise, heh, here's a situation. Because of course, I couldn't JUST have you encounter what you're looking for.

@hatakekuro
Nicely posted. Must admit that the mental image of just the two combatants just hanging onto one another doing more and more damage over time is absolutely hilarious in my mind. Nice. So, what now?

Also, do I count it as that you've already received your free Poké from Zachery or not? I will reveal Toxel IS one of the ones available for trade in the Poison-themed town of Goldshore, there just weren't any better picks for Galar Poison, hah.

Random thing. I reread everything recently, right? I discovered that Anise caught a Riolu in Mt. Strength when she was with Claire. I had totally forgotten, and never updated my papers. I can do better. Hahaha. Anyways. What now?

@Rune_Alchemist
Nicely posted.

Now, you're the first one in a town with me having announced these little changes. You might want to look into the "Suggestions to Actions" at the bottom for what Pokémon are available in Raremine Town, if you want.

Now, another thing. I do feel a little bad for how Dunstan treated Claire when she came to talk to him. Thing is, he basically doesn't trust anyone, and she wasn't giving him much reason to divulge information to her... but that goes the other way as well, she had no real reason to trust him. Having reread that section now, I feel I should have thrown you a bone. The same way I now feel I should have told Pikmin Eye he was, like, one room from discovering the greatest secret of Team Virtue, like, five years ago, but he went through the wrong door and never came back. I totally should have just completely changed the geography of the base so that he'd walked into it anyway... but anyway.

If you go back now, I'll have him say something different. You don't need to do so right away, but you can keep it in mind. Not sure it'll be that interesting, but it'll give you a reason to come back later, potentially. Maybe.
The Pokédexes, which double as phones, made a small noise that announced that you had all received a message from Professor Kalmia. The message could wait until you wished to listen to it, but when you did, you found it was an audio-message.

‘Hello, trainers! Professor Kalmia speaking! I’ve called you today to inform you of some going-ons!’ Kalmia’s voice was heard, and she sounded kinda excited.

‘First things first, I got a deal through with the Pokémon League! They’ll now give the Freecape Ferrymen some payment, and offer you guys the ability to go to their offices in all towns of Isson! For 500P, they’ll fly you to any city or town in Isson that you have previously visited! This goes for Jacques' trainers too, apparently. That should speed up the backtracking! Of course, if you get your own rideable Pokémon, you can skip the fee!’

‘Secondly! You might have heard the news? A pirate has appeared with a hull filled with Pokémon not originally found in Isson! From Alola, Galar, Paldea, maybe more!’ For when he suddenly carries things from future generations. ‘His name is Zachery, and he sails around Isson and can be found wherever there’s seawater! I came into contact with him, and he offers each trainer of mine a free Pokémon of their choice! Any beyond the first you’ll have to pay for, however.’ Now, should I count that Basil already got his free Pokémon?

‘Besides that, you’re not the only people in Isson to have visited Zachery! Many others have, too! And, some of them are willing to trade! In every town and city in Isson, there’ll be some Zachery customers that are willing to trade their picks for a Pokémon that is actually available in Isson! Each town will have three trades, and all of them will be of the type that the town is associated with! For instance, the traders in Pureplain City are all trading Normal-type Pokémon, yeah. Each town has one Alola Pokémon trade, one Galar Pokémon trade and one Paldea Pokémon trade. Funny how that works out.’

‘So if you want a very specific Pokémon, you can find the town specializing in that type, and see if it is being traded there! Though, note none of the traders will carry any “special” Pokémon, just normal ones.’ No Ultra Beasts, hybrid fossils or Paradox Pokémon. ‘And, if it’s not there, well, then guess you’re going to need to find Zachery and get it from his hull. This includes alternate forms of other Pokémon.’ Though, Zachery will not have Legendary Pokémon. ‘There’s also some new evolutions for Pokémon existing in Isson… something tells me their evolution methods might work if applied to Isson Pokémon?’

‘I will note. The Pokémon from outside Isson are NOT part of the mission you received from me, the one to map the Pokémon native to Isson. … That said, it’s cool to have foreign Pokémon, isn’t it!? You can bet basically none of the natives are going to have any of them!’

‘That’s all for now! I wish you good luck, and let me know if you need or wonder anything! Kalmia, out!’

Eryn bid her goodbyes with Braith over the phone and then headed on. Getting by the Onix, she’d find that Braith’s directions were practically perfect. Highly probably he’d been here before.

That said, while Eri could replicate the outside appearance of the Umbreon they’d seen, actually emitting light was beyond the scope of what the illusion could do. It was more of an in-place illusion. Sure, he could make it LOOK like he was shining… but he wasn’t actually, and it didn’t particularly brighten up the area. However, perhaps the light of Dei’s tail would do. If nothing else, he could breathe fire occasionally to brighten up the surrounding area.

Regardless, she was soon able to head down into the depths… where there were a bunch more Geodudes lying around, and Gravelers, but she’d simply have to dodge those again. Nothing else to it. Soon enough, she found herself on the path by the river that Braith had described. Somewhere on this route, dragons were supposed to be able to appear. Due to the presence of the water here, it was just a little brighter than the previous area… and…

There wasn’t just one dragon. There were three.

♀♀♀ I rolled for gender thrice and got three female results
Pokédex Entry #371 – Bagon, the Rock Head Pokémon. It constantly dreams of being able to fly and hurls itself off cliffs to practice. Its head and body is extremely tough, allowing it to survive this. It’s a big bundle of muscles, and its headbutts can shatter rocks. It’s known to headbutt mercilessly to relieve stress.

Three Bagons stood in a circle, looking from the one to their left, to the one to the right. They eyed each other suspiciously. In the very center between the three of them…

… Lay a single Dragon Scale, clearly an item of importance to the three Bagons.

It appeared they were having some form of Issonian Standoff, or something.

What would Eryn do, if anything?

Anise stopped on Basil’s command, nodding and awaiting the result.

Cecil felt the strong grip of the Vice Grip on her sides… but decided to counter with a Fire Fang!

‘PIIIIIIIIIINS-!’ Pinsir shouted out in anger from its head being gnawed on, but refused to let go! Instead, it just tightened the pincers even tighter around Cecil’s sides! And, in response, Cecil gnawed on…!

Now, Pinsir is a block of stats. A fully evolved Pokémon, on account of being the only Pokémon in its evolutionary line. It was stronger and tougher than Cecil… but Cecil made up for it by being Super Effective! A biting battle took place, where Cecil’s fangs burned Pincir’s head while Pinsir’s pincers dug into Cecil’s sides, both Pokémon taking damage by the second…!

Over time, both Pokémon were considerably weakened! It wasn’t clear who was going to come out on top… but that’s not what the goal of this encounter was, was it?

<after checking with player> Basil threw a Great Ball!

The Great Ball hit the Pinsir, and the giant bug was absorbed into the Pokéball in a red flash, and Cecil fell off the being and rolled away a bit. The ball itself landed just below where it hit.

It rolled once!

It rolled twi-

‘Um… Onyx is a person… Specifically, a codename… You know, like the black gemstone…?’ the Lass asked in reply to Claire’s joke, but Isabella just chuckled and was on her way, giant floating Golbat following along. That was there the whole time, by the way.

With Claire being so confident, though, the Lass simply shrugged. ‘Alright, if you say so. Okay, can we exchange info so that I can send you messages? Guess you’re my responsibility?’

If Claire was fine with that, then information was exchanged. After that, the Lass intended on escorting Claire out of the secret base they’d built. With the assumption that Claire wasn’t about to resist, she’d find that she wasn’t led to the same entrance as the one she’d used to enter this place. Instead, she walked up some stairs to a random normal building in Raremine Town, and expected to simply walk out the front door. If she wanted to get back to the secret Amethyst base, she’d know where to go now. Still, based on what they were saying, Team Amethyst expected the base to soon be discovered anyway.

Claire was back in Raremine Town. The group of people had dispersed by now.

Small possibly interesting thing. Cathia, the very person that Claire just fought in the underground Amethyst lair, was sitting on a bench in the middle of town with the papers that she’d stolen, resting and reading the documents. Claire could coincidentally run into her.

Alright, let's get this show on the road again.

@Joshua Tamashii

I do somewhat regret trapping you in this Ace Attorney reference for so long. I don't entirely feel like I planned it enough. There was supposed to be some form of lethal contradiction in Smergle's testimony here, but I completely forgot what it was. But, I think I can fix that.

If you don't understand what I'm hinting at here, do ask me, hah.

@hatakekuro

Now, headbutting the same tree over and over is not going to work, but under the assumption you went around headbutting different trees... There you go.

Tell me if you'd like me to change anything or so.

@Pirouette

I haven't heard your confirmation if you want to continue or not yet, but here it is in case. If you do want to continue, do you want this to be a drawn-out battle? Do you want to do it faster? I can do it in basically any speed. But in my notes, this dude has six Pokémon. Maybe I should lower that to four for the sake of speed, hahaha. That, or we could collab it. That could also go faster.

@Gardevoiran

Yeah, no, you sweep her. You're got the type-advantage and all. So there you go, heh.

And all of you, regardless of if you've replied or not yet or if you're planning to, thank you for playing my game. Now, if you wish, let's continue.
@Joshua Tamashii

The GM has literally forgotten what the contradiction in Smergle’s last testimony was. I believe it was something to do with the last line. I don’t remember. However, I will now make it significantly easier.

A search was conducted on Ledyba, and no stones were found on him.

‘Smergle, smergle!’ Smergle called in Smergle-language while painting a picture of Ledyba hiding a spiky orange stone in a bush.
‘Smer-smer! Smergle, Smergle-mergle!’ the orange-tailed Smergle claimed in Pokémon language while painting a picture of the spiky stone with sticks and leaves all over it.

I bet he hid the Water Stone somewhere!
Bet he might even have somehow disguised the stone to look like something it isn’t!

Or she could leave.

Cecil went over and started to Headbutt the tree! And, immediately, Burmys started falling around, making upset noises and hurried away.

‘Um, perhaps try some different trees as well,’ Anise suggested, because unlike in the case of pure Pokémon logic, trees can actually run out of Pokémon. But, with the assumption that they went from tree to tree and headbutted, they’d make some more Burmys and some Slakoths come tumbling down against the fortunately pretty soft forest floor… but eventually.

‘PINSIR-!’ … And the creature suddenly emerged from BENEATH the tree that just got headbutted, its pincers appearing to the left and right of Cecil!

Pokédex Entry #127 – Pinsir, the Stag Beetle Pokémon. An astoundingly powerful Pokémon, it catches its prey in its pincers and squeezes hard. They dislike cold, and are known to burrow and sleep under the ground on cold nights deep in forests. In the morning, damp soil clings to its body.

‘Woa, it worked, but…!’ Anise commented, astounded. However, she immediately took a prepared stance and was ready to command her Pokémon to help, because…!

Pinsir immediately gripped the offender with its pincers! It ambushed Cecil with a Vice Grip! She’d be pretty hard-pressed to escape on her own!

What will Basil and/or Cecil do?

Julian grunted as Kay came out and completely no-selled the Confusion. Erika’s opponent wasted absolutely no time retrieving the Pokémon with a beam from the Pokéball.

‘I don’t only have Psychic-types… Go, Magnemite!’ Julian called, throwing his Pokéball forth and a new mon took shape! A metal sphere with magnets attached to it!

Pokédex Entry #81 – Magnemite, the Magnet Pokémon. It floats by emitting electromagnetic waves from the units on its sides. It is attracted to electricity and will home in and feed on it, in case of a shortage you might want to check the breaker box for Magnemites. It is eerily silent, known to appear out of seemingly nowhere with a sudden Thunder Wave.

… Magnemite was immediately struck by Kay’s Foul Play! However, that’s a move that uses the opponent’s attack against them, and Magnemite’s defense is double its attack, so it didn’t do as much as it possibly could have!

‘I’ll show you. Magnet Bomb!’ he commanded… and Magnemite launched a number of tiny metal balls, which floated into the air before suddenly surging forward at Kay! These balls were homing, following their opponent’s every move!

All during this, Joshua and Ewan were fighting it out with Mia and Allan, Machamp was fighting the goons, while Maple was pelting at the giant machine with fire attacks and Ellyn was satisfied standing with her arms crossed, watching Julian battle like this.

@Gardevoiran

To say Skylar was prepared to take on the Ground-type Gym Trainer would be quite the understatement.

Seeing that Tropius was there, Liselott decided not to switch any Pokémon. Seeing how she didn’t have any other attacks that were effective, Cubone rushed forward to Headbutt and Diglett sped its way forward at a blinding speed to scratch. However, Diglett is very tiny, and both of Skylar’s Pokémon were in the air, correct? So the tiny Pokémon unable to leave the ground couldn’t really do anything. Seabreeze Water Pulsed and Paradise Razor Leafed… and after that there wasn’t much left of the opposition.

In the second round Liselott commanded Wooper to cover Larvitar so that Larvitar could get off a Rock Slide, but both Seabreeze and Paradise outsped their opponents. It was a simple matter for Seabreeze to just fly around the Wooper or for Paradise to just Razor Leaf the shield first.

Skylar was victorious! Skylar gained 750 P for winning!
Seabreeze grew to level 21!

‘Wow! You’re pretty good! Now, here’s a clue!’ Liselott said, then leaned forward for a mock whisper. ‘For the last part, the Gym Leader was on someone’s back!’

So it was. Now back to where the path split off. Where would Skylar try now? … Wait, did the whole rock over there just tilt a little? Not that Skylar could see, but his Pokémon sure could.

1. Tiny Line. There’s still a miniscule line of something having dragged along the desert. It’s too small to be a wheel. They lead to a tall rocky pillar randomly standing around.
2. Footprints. There’s a trail of small footprints that could be the Gym Leader’s that suddenly split from the main digging path. It leads to a low rock and into a pile of boulders that would make a good hiding spot.
3. Sporadic lines. There’s suddenly a vast array of individual dig-lines that split from the main path. They’re small, but they disguise if there could have been footprints here. They lead to a small cave in the bottom section of the rocks.
4. Stumble. A set of large footprints emerge from the line, before promptly stumbling on a very visible rock, leaving a large imprint of a decently large person in the sand who then hurried to climb onto the rocks and into a crevice.
5. Main Digging Path. Something has been digging underground. It reached the highest rock… which had been carved into a giant eerie rocky face with a big crown on the backside, it’s mouth hanging open and the trail went inside. Was a high-detail construction, indeed.
First thing first, Mariette, Ronin and Miko will all be feeling happy feelings seeing Ruby here, briefly. Because wish that makes them friends.

When they spoke about the impossibility of moving everyone in Penrose to a specific location, Ronin suddenly laughed a little.

‘If it’s about the room all the inhabitants of the town would take up… Couldn’t we have, like, MDP shrink the people in the town so we can hide them somewhere small safely? I bet she has the power to do that, if she puts her mind to it,’ Ronin said with a smirk.

‘Dear sister, how comfortable do you think the inhabitants of Penrose would be with suddenly being shrunk and stuffed away in an otherwise small area?’ Miko asked, with a raised eyebrow.

‘Hey, they’d at least be safe, wouldn’t they?’ Ronin chuckled.

Lily gave the paper over to Miko, who inspected it closely, and Ronin leaned over as well to inspect it. Now, these characters weren’t really intended to be that big into anime, but hey, this Japanese obsession Ronin apparently had must have come from somewhere. And if Ronin watched it, so did Miko.

‘Heeeey, that town name…’ Ronin said.

‘That’s from Bleach, isn’t it? And…’ Miko said, and then her eyes widened a bit. ‘In that show, they put a false version of the town on top of the real town, and then inside that version of the town they were able to fight freely without injuring anybody. Is that… what whoever sent this paper intended to suggest?’ Miko asked.

‘Er, in that case, why not just write that?’ Ronin asked.

‘Perhaps… oh,’ Miko winced a little. ‘So potential eavesdroppers wouldn’t understand the reference, and we could plan it without them knowing? Which I maybe messed up by speaking it out loud? I’m sorry,’ Miko bowed in apology. Ronin chuckled.

‘Well, good thing we’re in the anti-eaves-dropper field, then! So, guys? Is that something we could do? Overcity Shifting already exists, so… That’s got to be similar!’

‘Still… is that something that is actually in our power to do?’ Miko asked, looking towards the others.

On a different point. At the time Chloe summoned the skeleton and called it Sakura, Ronin tensed up. She had to mentally tell herself that had to be a coincidence, because there’s no way that big skeleton was actually Sakura. Just a coincidence Chloe picked that name. Yeah. Miko noticed the plight and put a supporting hand on her shoulder, though Ronin just winced on that, too.

So, Mariette wasn’t super-confident in the anti-scrying measures, but guess it was the best they had. Just to make sure that their enemies weren’t somehow scrying through her portal, Mariette stood up and walked through her portal to actually join the meeting proper, closing the portal behind her. Now, she also knew who Nefer was already, but could she be truly sure nobody present was working for their enemy? … No, not really. But this was also the biggest audience of confirmed allies she could possibly have.

‘… I’m here. If it’s a matter of traveling, I got my own means. If you want to move all the inhabitants of Penrose somewhere, or trigger something from afar to make them move, I can help,’

‘Allow me to share my intelligence. Though, if the Mint has truly infiltrated Wonderland to the degree Chloe is claiming, they’ll already know,’ Mariette said. ‘I went to Wonderland twice, first to scout, then because I was invited by the Queen of Wonderland herself. What I can confirm is that there’s a magical spell on Wonderland, and its inhabitants act as if they live in a children’s fairy tale… and that spell starts to afflict someone who has gone to that dimension. I didn’t stay long enough to find out, but it could be that someone who lives there long enough become like them, a slave to their queen,’ Mariette shared.

‘If you’d like to go there, I can take you. I would advise bringing some form of magical protection, however.’ That sorted that out.

‘And… I can confirm that the Queen of Wonderland has a second goal. That goal is… me,’ Mariette shared, a bit awkward about it. ‘She believes I am Alice, her daughter. Which… I don’t know if I believe, but it does make it likely I will see her again.’

‘I looked into it. Turns out, there’s been multiple Alices in the past, each one mistaken for the Queen’s Alice, who I believe once existed but died. Each of these Alices looked kind of like me, so I assume I have at the very least a passing resemblance of the real Alice. And every single one of those Alices… died shortly after in tragic, unrelated events that were not due to the actions of the Queen. Looking at the circumstances, it’s like they just coincidentally died shortly after the Queen decided they were Alice. So, um. Yeah,’ Mariette said, leaving the obvious bit about the danger she herself might potentially be in unspoken.

‘Regardless, she might welcome me coming back to her. Maybe I could achieve something. Maybe,’ Mariette shrugged, Bunny in her arms.

Just offering the options, if the rest decided on something else. The Mint deal thing wasn’t up to Mariette, after all.
Just going to mention this now, in case it becomes relevant later. None of my characters are keeping their Grief Seeds on their person or anywhere close to it. The things are just WAY too suspicious for that, hah.

The two of them arrive. They don’t have anything to contribute to the conversation. They can wave and smile at various people who look their way. It’s not like they have any power around here.

Mariette gradually, soundlessly opened a portal, not saying anything. She didn’t walk in through said portal, the portal just opened mid-air in a place where it didn’t get into the way of anyone else, and on the other side sat Mariette. The portal was big enough she could step out of it if she wanted, but she didn’t. She didn’t call out that she’d arrived in any way, so someone looking in a different direction could possibly not have noticed her appearing until they looked in that direction. She just sat there, squeezing her bunny.

The presence of Sonia severely put Mariette on edge. That girl had been her worst fear for a lot of time. The idea that Sonia could just materialize out of nowhere with all of Mariette’s banes and just end everything with a single swipe. It could happen at any moment, at any time, at any place. She’d have been more than happy to see her eliminated… but guess this wasn’t the time.

Okay, eventually she did find something she wanted to say.

‘… If I was Wonderland, I definitely would want to eavesdrop on any meeting like this. I know, because I was eavesdropping last time,’ Mariette mentioned, not really for anyone in particular to pick up, but just to keep everyone aware of what they were saying, and possibly address the potential issue. In case someone had some eavesdrop-proof strategy in mind.

Because the whole thing Chloe was saying was definitely something Wonderland would be interested in hearing about.

Besides that, Mariette was keeping herself constantly ready to portal away and/or portal directly to next to Lily. She did not trust Lily's new bodyguard. At all. As such she kept very wary of her movements, and stayed mentally ready for a quick escape/rescue at all times.

So, a message had been received. It seemed like Lily wanted to gather everyone in the park and have them take part in the battle against Wonderland. Ronin slapped her cheeks.

‘Alright! Let’s go!’ Ronin grinned and stood up, smiling so brightly as she prepared to depart. They’d spent the last couple days tracking down anyone who knew Sakura and informing them what happened, only going into detail about how exactly if asked of if the other person was particularly close to her, before finally burying her by an actual cherry blossom tree, for that was probably what she would have wanted. Unless someone else more worthy of it took her off their hands.

Miko looked at Ronin beaming like normal, and she couldn’t help but worry.

‘Dear sister… Are you okay?’ Miko asked, moving closer to Ronin.

Ronin, understanding where Miko was coming from, turned and continued beaming at her.

‘I’m okay! Sure, some parts of my mind linger on the event, but I refuse to be sad forever! The people of Penrose need me as I am! The more happy people there are, the better! So come now, sister! Let us save Penrose!’ Ronin told, holding out a hand for her sister.

A bit relieved, Miko took her hand.

‘Yeah… Let’s.’

With that, hand in hand, the two twins made their way for Penrose Park.

Mariette was sitting quietly, reading. She was sitting inside Taihei’s workshop, where the Artificer was working on something at her request. What she was reading were the copied pages of the Queen of Wonderland's notebook, which Mariette had stolen, copied and then redelivered as quickly as possible through portal, hoping said queen would not realize it was ever gone. Reading these pages...

‘So that's it...’ Mariette muttered. It wasn't much she could really do with the information, even telling others about it felt relatively useless, so she'd rather not so she wouldn't prove to the queen that she read her notebook. Still, it was enlightening about the whole situation of "Alice". Not much she could use it for, but it was enlightening.

She was actually here because she'd tasked Taihei to make something for her. In fact,

‘They’re ready,’ Taihei told, picking up her new invention… a couple pages of paper, to hand over to Mariette. Her own magical protection protected her from the numerous paper-cuts the pages tried to give her.

‘Thank you. Do they work as intended?’ Mariette asked, accepting the papers and looking down at them.

‘They do,’ Taihei said, not noticing how a bolt on her forge was slowly dislodging. ‘If you write a message on these papers, only the person the message is intended for will be able to read it. If that someone then signs the paper, you will feel it. The paper will then burn itself. Perfect for secret messages, I guess,’ Taihei said.

‘Good. Now, it is imperative that you do not tell anyone you made these for me, even our friends and allied here at the base. It is a task from Asengav that holds utmost secrecy,’ Mariette lied.

‘Yeah, sure,’ Taihei replied, not really caring.

‘Alright. I will leave you to your current work, then,’ Mariette said, turning around and walking through a portal to her room.

Behind her a bolt sprung loose from Taihei’s forge, somehow hitting something vulnerable and causing a giant magical explosion and bathing the room in lava. Taihei stood in the middle of it, unharmed, unbothered, and started using her Gravity magic to clean up.

Mariette, meanwhile, arrived to her room where she’d left her phone, something she’d been doing a lot to make sure her information girl couldn’t always track her motions. Still, she arrived to her phone getting messages. She picked it up, saw numerous messages about a supposed gathering… Penrose Park. Just like the first time she saw everyone.

Fine, then. Mariette immediately opened a portal and stepped out into an apartment overlooking the park. She opened numerous portals to her eye behind the eyepatch to scout around. She’d come down when more people arrived, but for now, she simply wanted to find anyone peeking at this scene. All the major powers of Penrose gathered at one location was a prime spot for a lethal attack, after all, if it came to it.
Mariette sat calmly in the middle of a dark room. She was wearing the school uniform of the Overcity College of Magic. She kept her eyes closed, controlling her breathing, her white hair hanging behind her and not wearing her typical eyepatch. A single bottle was sitting before her. Also, something was brewing on the opposite side of the room…

A transparent, white being floated slowly through the wall. A dreadful skull in place of its head, hallowed by time and damage, with the armor of an ancient warrior and a ripped cloak above it covering the ghast’s body. It held a sword and shield in its left and right hand. It looked at Mariette, and a chill wordless sound came from its mouth.

It was an undead wraith, who had every capability of being deadly.

Mariette did nothing, just sat there calmly.

The wraith shouted out and lifted up its sword, before gliding forward as if intending to cut Mariette. She didn’t move… until finally the wraith crossed the border.

A portal opened above the wraith, and a circle of purified salt fell down around the wraith, causing the creature to let out a chill screech. Also, numerous talismans attached to strings also fell down hanging around the wraith, repelling it, containing it inside the circle of salt.

As it struggled and attempted to slice around itself, Mariette slowly stood up, sighing out. The wraith looked at her, its expression cold and empty, but its actions were filled with rage as it tried to slice itself free. One arm got out…

Mariette crouched beneath the arm and lunged forward. She muttered a couple magical words, and power collected in her hand as she slapped it forward into the chest of the wraith’s armor. Light blasted out of the hit, and the wraith shouted out once again in its chilling, inhuman voice… but its strength weakened. The whole creature was pulled downwards, shrinking, sinking down from where Mariette had hit it, until it was engulfed by the little bottle that was sitting on the floor beneath it. Moments later, the great specter was gone, and left was a tiny little armored ghost in a bottle. Mariette picked up the bottle and stuffed a cork on it to block its escape.

“Well done!” called the examiner, who’d been hiding outside the room watching over. “Ten out of ten! Exceptionally done!”

Mariette frowned as she looked down on the bottle. Her grip tightened, a sliver of annoyance going through her veins. This… this still wasn’t NEAR enough for the league she needed to contend with…!

Mariette continued working hard on her studies in the Sealing courses of the Overcity College of Magic, going far and beyond the average student. Not only was she taking additional lessons from Tuuletar, she had also gathered extra materials such as books and scrolls to further develop her understanding of the arcane art. She had passed both Sealing Fundamentals and Advanced Sealing, and achieved a perfect score on the mid-term exams. She has learned how to apply long-term sealing to magical entities within a ten-meter radius using an elaborate ritual, as well as temporary sealing using hand seals and an incantation followed by a palm strike on the target. Using her skills, Mariette can reliably exercise and seal lesser-to-medium level targets.

However, when Mariette began the Expert Sealing course, she had realized that she had hit a wall in her learning; while the contents also included practical elements and as it’s final project did include sealing a genie, a high-level magical entity, the course mostly focused on the theory and development of sealing magic, and didn’t go as far with the sealing process itself as Mariette would have liked.

Still, Mariette continued tending the Expert class, and as she did she would find herself spending small moments of time with her classmates at the College, Rennala and Ebony. The two girls were still working on Advanced Sealing by the time Mariette moved on to Expert, but even so the girls continued hanging out; instead of a schism forming between her and the other two, Mariette noticed that her efforts had in turn motivated the two to work even harder on their own studies, having been recognized as an honor student by her peers and faculty.

This was especially apparent when Mariette stepped out of the day’s class once it finished,, and happened to run into the two of them in the hallway.
“Hey! Mariette!” Rennala called out with a big smile and a wave of her hand, accompanied by Ebony. “You’ve already started Expert Sealing, right? That’s honestly amazing. You have a real talent for this!” The bubbly girl complimented, while Ebony nodded. “Yes. I’m still in Advanced, but I think I’ve learned a lot just from seeing how you do your studying. Even Damien wouldn’t want to be in your body.” As she said that, Mariette noticed how Ebony’s eyes briefly flashed a mix of red and black. “That’s what I said, Damien, and you know it’s true,” the dark-haired girl followed up as if talking to herself, grinning creepily.

‘Er…’ Mariette was a bit taken aback by their praises. Despite their saying she was amazing, she herself felt like she wasn’t good enough. But, bringing that up felt… inappropriate. ‘I’m sure… I’m sure the two of you will be right behind me. I believe in you,’ Mariette said, nodding to them.

Rennala gasped in delight, and took Mariette's hand in hers, excitedly shaking them. "Oh thank you, Mariette! I'll do my best, so that I can stand proud with you as magi valedictorian!"
However, Ebony seemed less enthused by the encouragement, having seemingly noticed Mariette's subtle temperament. "Is something wrong, Mariette? You don't seem enthused about attending like usual."
Rennala removed her hands and put them behind her back. "Is the class tough? I've heard that many flunk out, thinking it's too difficult for them."

‘Oh, no, it’s not that… I’m just…’ Mariette froze to, because she absolutely was not about to tell her new friends about why she was really doing this. That just wasn’t in the cards. Too unsafe. That said… ‘… I want to get better. Even better than these classes can teach me. But, if I’m to become better than my classes, then I can’t just learn from their material. I’d need to learn beyond them… but I’m unsure where I’d even start. I should probably stick with learning all I can here for now…’ she said. Yeah, that sounded genuine enough.

Ebony seemed as if she was in thought, and then shuffled closer to Mariette. She spoke in a lower voice: "There are ways you can learn very powerful magic…But it's dangerous. It could lead you to getting expelled…or worse." Rennala blinked, not having heard her. "Huh?" She tilted her head. Ebony gave her a quick grin before she resumed whispering to Mariette. "Meet me outside the College at midnight. I'll explain more there…if you're not afraid, that is."

‘I-’ Mariette froze, looking stunned at her classmate’s proposition. She wasn’t entirely sure she liked the sound of that. Yet, if it allowed her to become stronger… ‘I’ll… I’ll see you there,’ she said, in a quieter voice. She didn’t really want to risk getting expelled, but depending on what happened maybe she could pull out if it looked dangerous… maybe.

Ebony nodded, looking pleased. "Good. See you there." She then headed off down the hallway to another class, leaving Rennala puzzled. "Hmm…Oh, I get it!" The ditzy girl placed her fist in her palm. "You're doing a study session. Well, have fun!" She waved goodbye and left.

Mariette waved good-bye to Rennala, as she felt quite a bit of uncertainty within her. She didn’t really like the idea of doing something the people of the school who had treated her so well wouldn’t like… but, she had to at the very least give this a shot.

So, with that decided, she’d later get herself to outside the college at midnight, just as Ebony had directed her to.

-

By midnight, the atmosphere around the college turned from warm and welcoming to ominous and foreboding, as if it was the witching hour: the moon shined in the strange Overcity sky, wind rustled the gnarled bushes around the gardens, and an owl hooted, perched on the front gate.

Fortunately, Mariette didn't have to wait long, as Ebony soon came skulking: she had drawn her hood over her head, and carried a brown sack over her bag.
"Glad you could make it, Mariette~" The creepy girl greeted her, and looked around. She noticed that there was a guard standing at the from entrance of the school, and quickly dragged Mariette behind the outer wall.
"Alright, here's the plan: we're gonna sneak into the forbidden section of the archives. I know there must be some wonderful tomes there just waiting to share their sweet secrets. Of course, we can't get caught. But if we do, we never knew each other. So, any questions?" She asked, and rummaged through her sack.

‘Oh,’ Mariette made a noise of realization as Ebony explained her plan. Mariette got a little scared inside. ‘Do we, um, know if there’s any magical protection? Or are we going in blind?’ she asked, bringing a hand to her chest as she asked, looking towards the ominous building with a bit of worry.

“Of course they have protection,” Ebony answered, and then picked out a small brown pouch from her sack. “Any forbidden archives worth their dust is going to have warding. But as you can see, I came prepared. Now, hold still, ok? And maybe hold your breath too…” She took a pinch of what looked like strangely translucent powder, and blew it off her palm, letting it billow into a small cloud around the two of them. Mariette then saw as Ebony vanished from her sight…as did her own hands. She heard Ebony’s low voice from the spot she was standing. “Nice, the Dust of Disappearance still worked. Ok, now follow me, Mariette.” Mariette felt Ebony’s hand gently touch her forearm, tugging her towards the side section of the outer wall where rocks were stacked to form makeshift stairs. “We can cross the wall here. Then we go through the basement door, and work our way up.” Of course, as Mariette has visited the archives before to borrow a couple of books from the public section, she could always just summon a portal there…But would she risk to reveal that magic to Ebony?

Mariette held her breath when Ebony requested it. And… it appears they became invisible. Interesting.

‘Where did you obtain this powder? Would it be visible to a person with Third Eye?’ she felt compelled to ask. Still, that aside, she allowed herself to be tugged along by Ebony. No harm doing this the normal way until otherwise required. So she followed for now, unless she saw some obvious trap they were about to walk into.

Mariette saw a couple of footprints appear alongside the sound of a thud, as Ebony jumped down the wall to the courtyard. "Let’s just say I have connections,” she answered with a low voice, followed by shuffling towards the basement door. She paused there as Mariette brought up Third Eye users. “Uh, maybe? But don’t worry, we won’t give them a reason to use it. You just gotta keep up.” She took out a magic wand with the tip shaped like an elaborate key, and with a little zap unlocked the door.

The basement was dark, but Ebony seemed to know her way around as she kept tugging Mariette up the stairs to the ground floor, where a lone guard was leaning back on a chair in the receptionist’s seat, looking at videos on Glimmr.
“Quiet,” Ebony whispered, and tippytoed past the guard. However, as Mariette followed, she accidentally stepped on a pencil and cracked it, causing the guard to put down his smartphone. “Hm? What was that?”

Mariette used Absolute Direction to locate the nearest rat. She then portalled the rat to near the pen, shifting the blame entirely and explaining the noise. Mariette hurried along, still invisible.

The ruse worked; as the guard shone an enchanted flashlight on the rat, the rodent scurried away, drawing the sentry'a attention away from Mariette, who successfully reached the stairs. She heard Ebony's subdued breaths near her: it seems the encounter was enough to cause even the creepy girl to turn slightly anxious.
"Phew, close call. What kind of trick was that? Never mind, let's move on.

The two reached the second floor, where the archives were located. After Ebony unlocked the door once again with her handy tool, the two entered inside. The archives, usually brightly lit, seemed ominous if not outright deathly in it's silence, like a tomb of knowledge; dusty books lined tall shelves arranged like a maze, filled with twists and turns, and the floorboards creaked with the occasional step. Mariette then saw as a book was removed, floating in midair, and then disappeared into something invisible.
"Demonomicon…A masterpiece," she heard Ebony mutter to herself.

After a moment of wandering the archives, the two soon found the forbidden section: the door was ominously chained, with a warding glyph enchanted on the door, glowing with a dull blue light. Ebony giggled. "Alright, this should work…" A small egg-shaped mechanical device appeared, and it floated towards the door. As it came closer, the egg opened up like a flower, and with a low hum, light began to emanate from the egg, drawing the magic on the door into it.

Soon the door lost it's shine, and was disenchanted.
"Yes! It worked. But now I have to keep this away, or else it'll ruin my other stuff…" She set the glowing egg down on the floor, and set to work unlocking the door. However, that was when Mariette, her Awareness acute in the dangerous heist, sensed the arrival of a guard coming upstairs and coming towards the archives, seemingly patrolling the area.

Mariette had been to these archives a lot of times during her time at this school, so she didn’t need to look for books that were of interest to her. That said, Ebony was clearly prepared to open this door, which she was a bit impressed by. Besides that…

‘Someone’s coming,’ Mariette softly shared with Ebony, taking a step aside. In order to buy some time for her… she Absolute Directioned for the rat, then placed it on the guard’s foot with a quick portal that then vanished. With any luck, it’d run in a direction that wasn’t this direction and buy Ebony some time.

Ebony quickly hid her tool away once Mariette warned her, and stood still as the guard opened the door to the archives. “Huh? Did I forget to lock thi-Ah, another rat!” The guard was startled by the rat appearing on her foot. The tiny animal scurried off again, and the guard cursed under her breath, now chasing after it out of the room. “Get back here, you varmint!”

Ebony giggled, amused by Mariette’s spell. “So you know portal magic, huh? Why didn’t you use that to get us here?” She wondered, but then sighed. “Eh, it doesn’t matter.” She unlocked the door, and the two entered the forbidden archives: compared to the deathly calm atmosphere from before, the torches glowing with green flames and gargoyle statues perched in the corners gave the area an outright occult feeling. The bookshelves were gnarled and twisted, as if struggling to hold the books contained in them. Ebony wheezed in joy, having suddenly appeared; the effect of the invisibility dust had ended on her.
“Yes…This is it! Now, let’s see…”

Mariette saw that the subjects of the books were varied: there were biographies and diaries from infamous and criminal Mahou, insane ramblings, recipe books for the cannibal or otherwise depraved palate, and even books stitched from human skin; Mariette could sense these books in particular were alive, and would scream if she were to attempt to read them. But the majority of the books were spellbooks containing magic too dangerous and evil to use. That was when Mariette spotted a couple of books that pertained to her interests: “Shackling Sorceries” and “Bondaga Arcana: A Reference Guide.”

As soon as Mariette grabbed the books, she heard some creepy laughter coming from the other side of the shelf, followed by the loud shattering of glass. As Mariette checked what was going on, she saw that Ebony had grabbed a book from a glass case: it was a red book made of tattered, sulfur-smelling leather, and had a demonic visage on the spine named “Ars Maleficarum”. Ebony opened the book, laughing as she skimmed through the pages. “Yes…Yes! Here it is! The spell to free me!”

She began reading the forbidden words, the language sounding infernal and abyssal, and word by word her red eyes began to glow. Then, Mariette saw as a demonic form crawled out of Ebony’s back, causing the girl to collapse unconscious. The fiend was frightening in appearance, standing three heads taller than Mariette, with jagged teeth, wicked horns and cloven hooves for feet. “Thank you. You are a true friend! Ha ha ha haa!” Mariette sensed how guards had run in, shocked at the sight of the demon. “What the hell is this?”

The demon laughed uproariously.
“Not what the hell, but who the hell! Ha hah haaaaa!”

‘…’ Mariette noted what was going on with silent confirmation. In response, she opened the book in her hand, leafing to the relevant page. If it required ingredients, she was confident the school itself carried them. With her normal portalling strategy, she held the book aside and multitasked by having a portal open from her eye to the book, quickly reading to try to learn what she needed as quickly as possible. Honestly, she could grab a couple books by tentacles and then open portals to each, she was used to watching multiple things at once, why not read multiple things at once? She could have portals scanning the titles of books and avoid the ones that would attack her, but seek those that might tell her about this demon.

‘I apologize for this. It was necessary to bring a foul monster out of my friend. However, with that part of the plan accomplished…’

Mariette’s hand-mirror, her magical weapon of choice, materialized in her hand as she turned to the demon.

‘I urge you to leave this to me,’ Mariette told the guard, with some assumptions that she was probably the more accomplished combatant of them.

“H-huh? Your friend?!” The guard next to Mariette glanced at her with shock, having just registered the quiet girl’s presence. “Die, fiend!” The other guard summoned her magical weapon, and charged in for an attack. However, the demon didn’t seem threatened, and shot out a red spike that impaled the guard, causing them to keel over.
“Ha hah haaah! I can feel my power returning! So, are you the next one? Maybe I’ll keep you alive, to feed on your pain and suffering!”

The other guard was more cautious, and kept her distance as she shot out beams of energy, giving Mariette the time she needed to prepare her magic. She skimmed through the pages of her newly acquired tomes as well as the Demonomicon that Ebony had grabbed, where she found the file and description of the demon: Demogorgon, the Prince of Demons. One of the most powerful fiends, Demogorgon possesses strength, agility and magical potential that could threaten even Patrons. Indeed, it is rumored that before his sealing he led a cult of Mahou as a Patron of sorts himself before it was disbanded by Beacon.

Mariette moved on to search for methods to banish or seal the demon again, until finally she found a spell she could use to stop the abyssal abomination’s rampage in the pages of the Bondaga Arcana. It was a spell she could quickly cast, but it required numerous rare ingredients. Fortunately, as Mariette had studied extensively on the subject, she immediately recognized all but a few of them from her classes, and quickly snatched them through portals to the storage room, which she has visited previously for her classes. As for the rest, she improvised using substitutes. It might not result in a perfect spell, but it would have to do in an emergency.

That was when Demogorgon, having incapacitated the other guard with a slash of his long claws, finally turned to Mariette, having noticed the numerous tentacles and portals. “You were of great use to me, Mariette, but I can’t have anyone threaten my new reign of terror! DIE!” The demon then lunged at Mariette, his fangs twisted in a cruel smile.

Mariette grunted at the guards taking such wounds, that wasn’t great, but she also recognized that if they hadn’t Mariette wouldn’t have time to prepare the spell she was currently arranging. With bitterness on her tongue, she locked eyes on her foe.

‘You should have stayed in your previous prison, Demogorgon.’ she said. There was power in names, and something she had previously learned, she was now going to name her seals.

Demogorgon reeled back mid-strike, his beastly visage in a grimace of disgust as his name was uttered. “I’ll cut your tongue!” He roared. To a demon, their true name was indeed a limiting factor, and fully solidified his essence into the Overcity plane. Still, it wasn’t enough to deter the fiend’s attack.

Now, Mariette was going to select an appropriate vessel.
First she thought of the rat, but that one’s mind could be dominated by the demon. So, then she thought of something… cuter. So she used Absolute Direction, and simply happened to find what she was looking for.

As Demogorgon approached, portals spawned in a wide circle. Magic power coursed around, connecting to each of the many magic items needed to contain this particular demon, and Mariette started whispering the words. With her ability to summon the needed items immediately, she was any sealable demon’s worst nightmare. She held out a hand, casting a repulsing light-shield to hold her opponent at bay for merely a moment as she got the words out, managing to deflect the deadly claws, seeing the red streaks they left in the air before her. Then…

A portal popped something up beneath the demon. It was a rat. Specifically, it was a plushie of a rat. An incredibly cute one.

‘Suffer in your new prison. I shall call this seal, and you shall be from now on known as…’

CUDDLESPAWN!

Mariette gave her seal a name, the best one she could think of, as she cast the sealing magic to trap the incredibly powerful demon inside the body of a plush rat.

As the ingredients were consumed in the spell, they coalesced into a magical vortex that formed under Demogorgon, beginning to draw him in with unescapable force.

“No! You can’t do this to me! I’m the Prince of Demons! The Scourge of the Abyss!”

The vortex strengthened, causing the demon to spin into a downward spiral into the plushie.

“NOOOOO!”

With one last scrape of the stone tiles, the demon was bound into the vessel, which shook as black magic was poured into it, before it finally stopped moving. For a moment, Mariette saw that the doll remained motionless, and that the demon was unable to escape its newest prison.
However, she then heard the fiend’s voice from the plushie; it seemed to be in higher pitch, as if to fit the smaller size of the vessel.
“Hah! You failed to fully seal me, witch! Now, it is time I cut you to pi-Uh?”
The plushie slightly shivered, but was ultimately unable to move. “Dammit! Move! MOOVE!”
However, try as he might, he could only slightly tremble in his inanimate form. “I can’t believe this..I’ve been reduced to a mere toy! The humiliation! The disgrace!”
It seems that Mariette succeeded in neutralizing the threat.
The incapacitated guard then opened her eyes, and held her bleeding shoulder.
“Wh-what happened? Where is the demon?”

Mariette panted from the momentary excitement, seeing how failing would likely have caused her death. Right, with that out of the way. First, she opened a portal to send the impaled guard directly to whatever medical facility might exist nearby in the Overcity. Then, she stepped forward, bent over and picked up the rat plushie.

‘I got rid of it,’ Mariette answered the guard, looking at the extremely cute little demon rat plushie. Mariette stared at it for a moment… then got a tiny blush as she pinched its cute little cheeks. ‘Cuddlespawn,’ she stated with happy finality.

Right, she probably should go over and check if Ebony was alright.

The guard looked perplexed, but sighed. "Alright. I need to…apply first aid, and contact the headmaster. Wait here," she said, and ran downstairs, breathing heavily as she leaned against the handrail and leaving a streak of blood.
As Mariette afterwards played with Cuddlespawn, it squeaked in rage. "That's not my name, insolent girl! I'm Demogorgon, Lord of the Damned! Once I'm out of this stupid vermin, you'll regret making a mockery of me!"

Ebony was still unconscious as Mariette went to check up on her, but woke when Mariette shook her a bit. "Ughhh…Mari…ette?" She stumbled up, holding her head. "D-Damien is…Gone. I don't hear him anymore. It's so quiet now."

‘Cuddlespawn,’ Mariette told with finality as she hugged the plushie and then dropped it through a portal into her hammerspace handbag, the plushie making one final squeak as it fell. She needed to look into her friend.

‘Yeah, he’s gone. Not free, I stopped him. He’s just gone. You’re free. Was that… what you wanted?’ Mariette asked, moving closer to hold onto her so she didn’t fall over, just in case.

Ebony blinked, and looked around, having noticed the fallen bookshelves and scattered tomes. "Yeah…Damien would make a mess like this once freed." She looked unsure about how to answer. "It's…Really quiet now. But also…calm. Like tranquil and…stuff." She then smiled, and hugged Mariette. "Thank you for exorcising the demon, Mariette. Now I can finally focus on my studies, and maybe even graduate. But, uhhh…" She then realized. "We might get expelled now."

‘You should be fine. You were possessed. None of it was your choice,’ Mariette told her, just going to gently caress her cheek for now. As for herself… she didn’t really dare wish for it, so she kept quiet about it. She really wished none of the guards had come to harm.

Ebony sighed, and accepted Mariette’s affectionate gesture. “I hope so.” Later, the headmaster arrived with more guards; he was shocked upon seeing the absolute chaos that the forbidden archives were thrown into. “Mariette Pedersen and Ebony Ironclaw? Care to explain the meaning of this egregious breaking of academy regulations?”
“It was the demon, sir,” Ebony spoke first before Mariette had the chance. “He took over my body, and blackmailed Mariette into helping him. Neither of us had a choice.”
Of course, Mariette could tell that wasn’t the truth even without her Light Specialization.
The headmaster on the other hand tapped his staff gently at the floor, seemingly oblivious of the lie. “Hm…Minerva did mention that one of the students was unconscious, and the other fought against a demon. And it would fit the fiend’s modus operandi. Mariette, is this true?”

‘…’ Did the principal have a way to detect lies? Light-specialization was decently common. If so, then lying would put them in even more trouble. But more than that, it felt… wrong. ‘… Not entirely. The demon did lure me while pretending to be Ebony and I didn't know what it was planning, but I could have said no. I was too curious. … That said, everything after that fits. The demon broke out, but I was fortunately able to defeat it. Ebony is no longer plagued by the demon within her. Overall, that feels like a decent outcome… I apologize for going behind your backs, I… in hindsight, that was a bad idea. I should have sent a request to look at the books instead…’ Mariette decided to come clean, come what consequences would. If she was expelled, she’d simply find a different way to learn. After all, she had the basics down.

The headmaster furrowed his eyebrows as Mariette unveiled the whole truth of the incident.
"How irresponsible! No wonder the demon got free, with such frivolous students to enable evil's work. That said, your honesty is appreciated. You won't be expelled, but…" He lifted his staff, and a pale blue glow emanated from it, before the light spread to Mariette and Ebony, before dissipating as glittery twinkles into the surrounding air.
"You are hereby banned from accessing the archives including the public section." He pulled back with his staff, and the Demonomicon flew through the air to his grasp. "Also, you will both receive failing grades for your Sealing classes. The next time you study the subject, maybe you'll learn something! But this is your only chance; I won't be as kind the second time you break regulations!"
Ebony bit her lip, looking like she wanted to protest, but stayed silent. "Understood, sir."
The headmaster stomped the end of his staff down.
"Now, out of here before I change my mind!"

The punishment confused Mariette a bit. This was a school, a place of learning, and her punishment was to lose access to learning material? And to lose the certification for having learned? The latter didn’t really matter to Mariette, the only thing she cared about was that she had the skills, and while losing access to the public section hurt she’d basically already scoured that and in the worst case she could employ her companions to retrieve what she wanted for her… However.

‘Sir,’ Mariette said. ‘Ebony was not in control of herself, the demon was acting for her. There is no reason to punish her, as they were not her actions,’ she declared, holding steady as she did.

"Fine, in her case it's detention then!" The headmaster retorted, his face red like he was about to shoot steam out of his ears. "Report to Professor Snapdragon, Ironclaw."
Ebony sighed in relief, and gave a voiceless word of gratitude as she then left. The headmaster tapped his foot impatiently. "Now, is that all? Or do you want to further test my patience?"

Mariette looked a little confused. Detention was still punishment, right? Still, it was a success. Detention was certainly far better than what could have been.

Seeing him red like that… reminded Mariette of her father. Back then, she’d been powerless against him. Now, she had a lot of power… it took a lot of her not to resist him simply because she could. She had to use reason to tell herself the dynamic here was completely different.

‘No, sir. Thank you,’ Mariette nodded to him briefly, before turning and walking. Guess it was time to leave.

Next day…

Mariette went to check up on how Ebony was doing after the detention session. Before turning the corner, she heard Rennala gasp with astonishment, and saw her talking with Ebony outside the classroom. The two greeted the shorter girl. "Oh, Mariette! It's so good to see you! Ebony just told me a most extraordinary tale of how you banished a demon!" She took Mariette's hand and shook it. "But I also heard that you failed the class…I'm sorry to hear that."

‘It’s alright. Compared to having the actual skill, the certification is pointless,’ Mariette replied. ‘That aside. Ebony. How are you feeling?’

Rennala was glad that Mariette wasn't perturbed by her predicament, and moved aside to let Mariette speak with Ebony. The sullen girl managed a smile as Mariette addressed her. "Well, I'm still getting used to being free of possession, but overall it's been liberating." She bowed. "Mariette, you saved my life, and even my magic education. I am in your debt. You ever need me, just send an owl…Or one of your portals, I suppose." Rennala gasped again, her eyes wide in amazement.

‘Very well. I might take you up on that later. For now, I’m just happy you’re alright,’ Mariette said, smiling at her.

With that, the three of them continued their normal magical school life…

Later. In Mariette’s personal study.

"Why am I here!? What are you doing to me!?" Cuddlespawn, the blue rat-doll asked, voice filled with rage.

Mariette calmly placed a pink rat-doll in front of him. ‘I… got you a wife.’

“What!? Of all the- I don’t need no-! Wait, what are you doing? No! NOOOO-”

Cuddlespawn cried in humiliation as Mariette poked the two plushies' noses together with a small childish blush on her cheeks.
