Being truly on my own is a bit of a weird feeling. It's never really happened.

Let it never be said that sometimes extreme brevity isn't the most appropriate post, though. Everything is a tool.

Quick question, are the students equivalents to second years or are there also first years too?

They're a bit over the place.

Jen's a second year, Kaede's third. I guess it's worth asking in the OOC for reasons to know the other characters if you don't want to start with no friends. XD
Jen White

After her dismal efforts in the Academy Tournament last year due to a combination of skipping classes (losing out on necessary information) and choosing to claim that a normal baseball bat was her Divine Gear, Jen had chosen to put more effort into it this time around. Well, 'chosen' was a misleading term. "The PE teacher had pushed her into taking it properly" was a more accurate statement off affairs.

A required part of putting in more effort was actually training against opponents using her proper sword rather than a wooden one. Given that the blonde disliked showing it off, it meant taking to only training once most people had left for the day or gotten involved in club activities; she got changed into a tracksuit, cleaned the many obviously mechanical parts on the old sword, and headed for one of the training rooms. This day was no different: ever pipe, wire, and even the odd piston was carefully checked over before Jen got going.

It was just her luck that the room she'd picked today was occupied and that the occupant was creepily staring at the door. Jen shifted the blade behind her back, once again feeling self-conscious about the amount of clunky parts creeping over the weapon, before asking Ruriko if she was done with the room.

Tachibana Kaede

On a bench between the school's main entrance and the shrine, close enough to the shrine that anyone particularly obnoxious could start a shouted conversation with the goddess if they really wanted to, there was a girl doing her best to take a nap. There were several unusual things about the girl: red hair despite being Japanese, wearing the boy's uniform despite being female in every regard, and even her choice of footwear was a bit odd. The strangest, though, was by far the most obvious.

She had no arms.

On the other hand, seeing her there was a pretty regular thing; Kaede had been taking a break on the bench every day there was good weather since she joined the school. Sometimes people decided to ask for help with homework. Sometimes she'd get approached to help with cleaning after some messy club activity, or if a classroom was in particular disarray. Sometimes students would stop and strike up a conversation. Most of the time, she got to take a nap undisturbed.

Kaede didn't think today was one of those days.
Pushing through the darkness was a surprising experience but not so far out of the realm of possibility that it worried Saffron or anything. It was somewhat reminiscent of waking up after a particularly heavy party... or some other accidents throughout the years. Nothing as bad as your own pyrotechnician accidentally setting you on fire, though. Hopefully it hadn't done too much to their singing voice... though making it a bit rougher wouldn't be the end of the world or anything.

Being still of a predominantly human form, Saffron wasn't caught up in the general hysteria--her arms were too small, too hairless... but after having been barbecued, it was far better than she could have ever hoped for. The imp looked around whilst trying to work out why things felt a bit... off. The rest of the cavern, naturally, freaked her out rather a lot and she jumped back, ignoring her new-found ability to ignore that what goes up should come down.

"D-Dinosaur! Giant cats! Don't eat me!" she shouted, startled by her own childish voice nearly as much as the giant monsters crowding all around. Her career was ruined like this. "S-S-Stay back, monster sn-snake!"

Given today's server messes and the time for me, looks like I'll be doing a post tomorrow.

Involving a monstrously large snake and giant dinosaurs. :T
Name: Saffron
Race: Devil (Imp)
Race Abilities: Devils are beings of magic and might, wielding both to overwhelm and obliterate their foes... except imps are rock bottom on the totem pole of infernal beings. Whilst they might have the heart and attitude for it, their tiny size and lack of potency makes them rather... less competent than their bigger relatives.
  • Fire Magic: You want a candle lit? Consider it done! A small fire to cook a pot over? Sure! (Just don't let her arms get tired holding a position) Fireballs? Well... it's a dream. Most things have hair and stuff to burn, anyway!
  • Flight: Despite the small size of the wings...
  • Pointy Teeth: The closest thing an imp has to being a big, burly devil: sharp little teeth and a strong bite. You might even lose a fingertip!

Gender: Female
Personality: Two words that come to mind for Saffron are 'cocky' and 'womaniser'. Of course, both of these were far more appropriate before she died and, needless to say, the brash self-confidence isn't going away any time soon. A third is 'glutton': food, in any quantity, is guaranteed to make her happy if for some reason her upbeat demeanour has been shattered.
History (Pre-Mortem): In life, Saffron was the frontman for a heavy metal band: big, muscular, liked to sing about fantasy themes a lot. Life was good, there was no shortage of women to flirt with or luxury foods to enjoy, and the band was reaching new heights and embarking on a world tour. Not a bad achievement for someone that managed to scrape a pass at best on almost every exam that they managed to sit.
Then the pyrotechnics for a different part of the show were fired. One barbecued singer later...
Appearance: Behold the immense foot-tall (11", actually... don't tell her) might!
Other: She still likes singing. Even though... well, the appropriate range of songs is totally different.
I hope it's not too late. D:

... could you... make the ability section clearer? I have no idea what his power-up IS. I'm also not sure what the first one does. O_o
Student:
  • Name: Tachibana Kaede
  • Age: 18
  • Gender: Female
  • Personality: Kaede is a pretty laid back girl, hard to get riled up or shake out of her general comfort zone of nonchalant acceptance. Her friendly demeanour makes her rather approachable to younger students and she's happy to help them out with preparation for the Academy Tournaments... or anything else. Unless she's left completely incapable of helping, she has an extremely hard time resisting the desire to help other people.
If something is threatening another person in her view--or worse, actually hurts them--then the relaxed joviality falls away entirely. Her serious demeanour is quite scary, particularly as she's a very practical person: if you're already being dangerous, there's no point talking you down... flooring you is quicker and safer.
  • Skills: Kaede is an all-around good student, though her homework submission leaves something to be desired and she's somewhat lazy about ruminating on the arts and tends to do better in science--and, for many reasons, she's absolutely prohibited from taking part in PE. From a combat perspective, she's got basic training in more than a few martial arts but, when the situation calls for it, is most skilled at simply brawling and ignoring pain. Additionally, the redhead is great at dealing with children, whether alone or in groups.
For obvious reasons, she's also pretty good with her feet when the situation calls for it.
  • Equipment: A Ritual Device dedicated to Heracles, made as a belt so that there's no reason she should ever not have the damn thing (especially because she doesn't wear skirts). The fact that without the belt, Kaede can't put on the belt is a Catch-22 situation she can't miss.
So far as pacts go, it's a pretty easy one for her to satisfy base requirements: some measure of athleticism, helping children, or general heroism is enough to get it going, though this makes it something she can't easily use for her own sake--such as purely academic reasons--which is quite annoying. Circumstances that actually call for feats of strength and indomitable confidence--or uncontrolled anger, which makes Kaede glad she's level-headed--are necessary for more than the mere base abilities, however.
The actual limits of her pact are dictated by more grandiose feats of worship: on top of all other factors, without replicating in some great quantity the Twelve Labours, it's limited to the current potential despite the god in question. Actually replicating one (the Nemean Lion) in a way was necessary to get the pact in the first place.
  • Abilities: Kaede's Ritual Device... gives her arms. They're obviously not organic arms, being a translucent mix of marble and Ritual Technology, but they're solid and she can control them like they were her own. They're also strong, even at a minimum--enough that it's a bad idea for her to take part in PE due to having a much larger potential for injuring people than a normal teenage girl.
When properly activate, the substantial strength boost is enough to dent rock with a punch and Kaede moves noticeably faster, though this is more of an equaliser against dexterous opponents than a game-changing boost. The final ability it gives her is good aim, whether throwing something or randomly handed a bow.
  • Brief Backstory: Kaede is the eldest daughter of a rather large family, with her father a prominent researcher in Light Engines specifically--not the uses they're put to, but the engines themselves. This leads him to spend a lot of time travelling and, after his daughter received her Divine Gear just after starting middle school, he sometimes brought Kaede along if she was free--both as an educational experience for her, and because the Gear's construction was often useful as a physical reference.
One experiment she was brought to, the winter before graduating from that school, was conducted in Greece and revolved around using a Light Engine to power a stable portal. Though the portals worked, it turned out to have a crippling flaw: an open gateway circumventing the Gate of Samhain. Only one entity got through before the power was cut, but the beast was larger than an elephant and disturbingly violent. Given the lack of armament professed by anybody else in the area, Kaede put herself in harm's way to take the thing on.
From her current appearance but survival, it's quite clear how that fight went. Fortunately for her continued manual ability, the lab had a shrine to strengthen its Ritual Technology and Heracles was somewhat impressed with her success, consenting to a Ritual Device for the girl. Given that her previous Divine Gear was a pair of fists, it meant that her ability to take part in Academy Tournaments when older wasn't obstructed. To her irritation, her previous mock battles tended to restrict her ability to take part.

If this world has a whole bunch of mythologies and gods from different cultures, then which creation myth is the real one?
