Being truly on my own is a bit of a weird feeling. It's never really happened.

Let it never be said that sometimes extreme brevity isn't the most appropriate post, though. Everything is a tool.

Sir Tyaethe

Tyaethe spared a short look at Fanilly as she came in, then turned her attention back to the individual petals floating down into the water. Far be it from a paladin to interrupt another's prayers, especially when voiced allowed. Though it certainly gave more insight into the captain's motives and, seemingly, a worrying lack of faith in her own abilities to attribute everything achieved in her current tenure to direct intervention. Or maybe just erring on the side of politeness, even if it verged into false humility?

"It is good to have a captain that holds religion in esteem," the paladin said, turning to look and meet Fanilly's gaze, "More than once since we have split from the church have I served those who view it only as a duty, and would resist with all their might to keep the Knights' power separate from the churches.

"Tell me, Captain, what would you do if Elionne were to return?" Tyaethe asked as the remaining rose fell into the pool beside her, last living person to habitually refer to her as anything but a saint, "It is, and always has been, a possibility."
Getting good answers out of someone this agitated would be hard and the last thing that they wanted to do when asking questions was stand up and make this look like an interrogation. Appearing more trustworthy would be a good first step--and Ryuuko looked around the room quickly for chairs, finding two at the end of some bookshelves shortly beyond Tomoko. Hard-backed wood, though nevertheless with that overdone fanciness that plagued the place, and less comfortable than the older woman's chair but they'd do.

Once pulled up and sat in them, Ryuuko decide to pre-empt any fancy conversation with the obvious question: "What can you tell us about what was taken? Especially its size, weight, or any other characteristics that would factor into an attempted theft."
One thing that remained the same, regardless of their respective views on appropriate architecture and styling, between the Miura and the Daidouji was a feeling that large properties had to be appropriately staffed. Even then, Ryuuko couldn't help but feel that they had entirely overdone it with the amount of maids in the entranceway. Especially when, going through the opulent room, there were even more. Where had they even acquired so many people willing to be maids?

Even with the excessive numbers, the maids clearly remained the only thing in the mansion that she would describe as "well decorated": everything else was simply too gaudy for Ryuuko's tastes. It wasn't simply the western design but the amount of stuff. The embroidered curtains with golden rails might have gone nicely with the flaw, and artfully placed urns or vases full of flowers added something to empty corridors... but there was so much, with so much repetition, that it looked messy and ostentatious to her.

She was curious what sort of family decorated like this.
@Fyre Unholy I think you fail to understand the idea of "moving to be ahead of someone" and "straight lines are quicker". More politely... I said that she moved to be ahead, and she has clear advantages in both those dimensions. "But they were already gone" isn't a counter when walking down a corridor. :T

Though, really, if you two are so eager to roleplay with each other and not the rest of the characters... why not start your own roleplay? It would be much more convenient than deliberately ignoring or trying to work around everyone already in this one. :P
And characters don't exist in a vacuum. Makes it rather strange that someone would have views with no in-setting practical or cultural basis then end up the exact opposite of their views. There's a point character attitudes unhealthily conflict with the roleplay.
Pointing to the mansion was an entirely unnecessary step. A building that size and style, along with her own knowledge of the destination, meant that Ryuuko couldn't help but determine it as their target. On the whole, the building put a sour taste in her mouth. It wasn't that her own family home was small but this was too big, too complicated, and too obviously a display of grandeur. Being western lost it even more points with her own architectural preferences.

Still, she reversed into the driveway and brought the car to a stop before handing the key over to Toshiko. Toshiko, who would hopefully let her drive back now that there was even less fuel in the car...
Merilia

This lack of recognition or acknowledgement--in Thaln, at least--was an unusual experience for the mage. In Akitsushima, she was rightly viewed as a distant foreigner and got attention for it. In Thaln, she was most of the way to being a local legend... not even being looked at was beyond the norm.

The black-haired mage tilted her head as they continued their discussion as if nobody was there. What had possessed the Iron Roses to hire a surgeon? If it meant a lack of proper healers, then she might have to come back and train a few up. Maybe the new captain might have an idea of their current medical capability--if not, Tyaethe certainly would. If this somehow represented the knights' current limit...

All normal conversation came to a halt when some maid came over and dusted the lot of them. If it hadn't been for her projection's existence as nothing but divinations and illusions, Merilia was pretty certain that she would have sneezed from the gathered dust. Oddly, two of the three knights displayed as much response to the impromptu cleaning as an actual statue and... continued to not even look in her direction.

That was simply rude. The maid, however, provided a new avenue...

"I am indeed ze former knight Merilia," she said, watching the two walk off before leaning in to whisper into Nero's ear. Her exchange was short, no more than a request and some advice, before the kimono-wearing mage took one look at the door Gutta and Roskothr had left by and following.

It was a good thing that a mere projection had no need to care about walls; moving in a straight line to appear before the two in the corridor was no work at all. Smiling slightly, the mage moved to block the pair's path and assuage her earlier curiosity:

"Does ze order 'ave no 'ealers? Going to a surgeon for pain is dangerous, non?"

"Do you think that they will have disabled the defences for us?" she asked, not wanting to contend with automated magical defences with the entirety of her magical ability coming down to 'make herself slightly tougher'. Where did you even start to go about neutralising these things with nothing more than a sword? But if the defences were down, then anyone with knowledge and access could take them apart and restore them... which made the prospect of an inside job seem all the more likely.
"Is there a range limitation to runes? Someone with the permission to be there and knowledge of the defences could take an unorthodox entrance like the roof and bypass the defences that way," Ryuuko wondered, doing her best to memorise the magical information whilst translating it into more mundane terminology. Barriers presented an analogy to walls and doors themselves, simply improved, and area wards had a similarity to biometric identification or even simply cameras. Runes of a limited range could represent even more focused cameras... or traps triggered around them, perhaps the patrols of guards.

The heiress pulled away from the red light, considering where a flaw could be. The important thing was to work out if magic innately protected against unexpected methods of entry. The floor and ceiling when you had up to date plans of the building would be easily exploited if not covered for. Even a few good protections around the target with a mage able to break them were meaningless if the alarms were silenced and the outer defences skipped.
Silence reigned aside from the humming of the engine. For once in a blue moon, Toshiko's car was being driven with all due respect to the law--and not pushing its components to their absolute limit. It wouldn't be long before the tires needed replacing, as well as the brakes... let alone all the essential maintenance running a car nearly as old as either of them entailed before you decided to push it as much as possible. Ryuuko suspected magic was involved, though Toshiko didn't seem that knowledgeable about mechanics...

After a few minutes, she started the conversation again: "What protections could mages use against theft? Onmyoudo is traditionally used for barriers and protection even without real magic. Though not in the sense of stopping thieves..."
