Signora was about to let loose an arrow she had notched at one of the shadows when two figures came barreling through the station's window. It took her a few moments to realise that it was Noblesse kicking someone else through the window. Judging from the Chimeratix's colour worn by the second figure, it seemed to be a member of the Chimeratix.

She really wished that Noblesse would give them a heads-up on bringing in a Chimeratix member. Though, to be fair, Signora did realise that after Noblesse went off on his own, it was probably difficult to find a way to contact them.

Still, perhaps they should see to some better means to communicate while on missions.

"Lucrezia!"

She summoned her persona once more, taking advantage of the stupor inflicted by Thespian on their opponent to attack the Chimeratix member with [Double Shot].

Ava Lane

"Tch," Ava clicked her tongue in frustration. Argent Wings had taken more damage than she had intended.

Argent Wings was lightly armoured in the first place, so it was not meant to take many hits. But she supposed it was to be expected given the circumstances of being surrounded and outnumbered.

Glancing at Horst, which had seemingly been successfully controlled by Guinevere, Ava took comfort that, at the very least, their gambit to take control of Horst worked.

Still...given Argent Wings' current state, close-range combat would be unwise. Fortunately, she still had some options.

Pushing Argent Wings as far as she could, Ava managed to have her Framewerk reach the top of the building closest to her to gain a vantage point, allowing her to witness Raptor leaping close to where Cockroach was, while Horst and Logic Diver were standing in close proximity, with Arrish seemingly making his way out of the cockpit to make a daring attempt to manually countering Guinevere's hacking.

A dangerous attempt, but given the situation, Ava supposed there was not much else he could do.

She briefly glanced at the Argent Wings systems before realising that out of the three, Raptor was unfortunately barely out of range, though the other two were fortunately within range of Argent Wings' Marker Lights.

"Cockroach, Gwen. I'm leaving Raptor to you. Will try to neutralise Horst and Diver," she said before putting Argent Wings' system into overdrive. [Flash in the Dark]

Employing a modification similar to the one done to Sleeping Thunder and activated by Aurora earlier, Argent Wing's engine whirred, its weapon systems pushed past the limit of its normal output.

Given the state of Horst and Logic Diver that were already damaged, one could say it was overkill, and Ava was endangering the integrity of Argent Wings' system needlessly, but Ava was not one who liked taking chances, and this was the best way she had to ensure the destruction of both Horst and Logic Diver.

The first attack would be aimed at Horst, taking advantage of the marking light from Ava's initial attack on Horst, while the second one would strike at Logic Diver.

The overcharged Marker Light installed on Argent Wings fired twice, raining down from above on Horst and Logic Diver.

Ava Lane

"That's...some serious firepower," Ava muttered as she saw the aftermath of Sleeping Thunder's attack, which was enough to even cause a glitch in the simulation.

She could not help but smile.

At the moment, Sleeping Thunder's devastating attack was bad for her, as it had completely shifted the tide of the battle. But frankly, Ava could not care less. Even registering the dent in one of her frame's wings could not dampen the glee that was almost building up inside her, imagining that firepower turned on the Cruxi.

This was, after all, a simulation. Who won or lost here did not matter. It only mattered that Sleeping Thunder had the ability to utterly destroy the Cruxi on the real battlefield.

This hellish landscape that Sleeping Thunder created was the least the Cruxi deserve.

If they could deploy Sleeping Thunder and kill scores of Cruxi, then perhaps finally, he would—

It was then that Argent Wing received a transmission from Sparks, which brought her back to her senses, as Ava saw multiple enemies converging on her location.

She also registered some incoming communication from Bugs, making an overly dramatic speech about 'rising from your grave', though she ignored that for now, as she, of all people, probably should not comment on a form of delusion. Even if hers was not a delusion of grandeur.

"Acknowledged. Will try to make some diversion," Ava replied, shaking her head to clear her thoughts from lapsing back on that delusion.

Making a snap decision, she charged in Horst's direction.

Originally, she intended to make a tactical retreat upon finding herself surrounded by enemies. However, now that Guinevere was attempting to take control of Horst, Ava decided to create a diversion.

As she got close to Horst while attempting to dodge its shot, the Argent Wing raised its vibrobalde, appearing about to confront Horst directly...before it suddenly pivoted with great agility, making a tactical retreat as planned.

Argent Wings was designed with ambush and 'hit-and-run' tactics in mind, after all. There was no need to fight in a head-to-head battle, Ava thought.

If they chased after her...well, that would leave them open to the rest of her team on the other direction. If they did not give chase...then it would give her a chance to reposition and strike again at an opportune time.

Arnannel

Arnannel sighed in relief as it seemed that the danger had passed.

The Auroch had been pacified. It seemed that the cauterisation attempted by the girl was successful.

Still, it was rather curious that, apparently, a parasitic plant was the cause of the Auroch's rampage.

At first, Arnannel had thought that the Auroch was simply a beast that was affected by the witherwild. But given that it seemed to calm down after the wound where the parasite was had been cauterised, it seemed it was more than the plant was the one that was causing it to rampage.

As far as he remember, a parasitic plant of that nature was not something that he remember from Fanewick. Did that mean that the plant itself was the one that was affected by witherwild and had somehow develop the ability to control its host's body? If so, that was concerning.

It was one thing if it were able to control the animals around here, but the real question was if it would also be able to infect the sapient races.

Arnannel jumped down, following the rest of the villagers who had been approaching Pepper and the Auroch.

Noticing the somewhat resigned look on the villagers, he asked, "So...is that sort of thing common here? Not the animals affected by the witherwild, but the parasitic plant," then turning to Pepper, he added, "Is there enough of the plant left? Maybe someone can look into it and see if we have a potential biohazard in our hand."

Signora gave a grateful look to Baron and nodded.

"R-right. Sorry, sir," she said, going along with the ruse.

Since the whole basis of that particular attack from her persona was probably how Lucrezia was said to have enchanted many noblemen with her beauty, she thought it would be more effective if she took off her mask.

But thinking about it over, she WOULD be in trouble if her attacks failed to charm the shadows.

Fortunately, in this case, it seemed to have succeeded, judging by how the shadows were fawning over her.

A moment later, she noticed Noblesse's signal to pick a target. Taking out her phone, she saw Baron's message that he was about to do something and to wait for him to make his move first.

'Understood', she replied quickly, before placing her finger just above the Black Crown App, ready to use it to summon Lucrezia again, at a moment's notice.

The message said that it would hurt a bit, but at least that would make the signal clear—

"Urk...!"

She winced, nearly dropping her phone after being assaulted by a sudden burning pain.

Baron said it would hurt, but...it was more than she expected.

"L-Lucrezia!" Signora summoned her personal, almost fumbling the name, as the pain subsided, having her persona shot at the nearest shadows using [Double Shot], albeit somewhat delayed in seizing the moment due to the momentary pain.

Glenlight Cafe

Leonardo felt his eyes twitch as he read the newest message from Selene.

What did she mean that 'the benefactor asked for the location'?

He told her not to contact the Church, as the client asked not to involve them. In fact, not involving the Church was why they were hired in the first place. Because Fatma did not want to consult the Church.

Sure, maybe she had not told this 'benefactor' the location just yet, but considering she lived in that very Church, there were many ways to use her personal belongings to scry her location with magecraft.

Although the Sister that was dispatched there by the Holy Church would probably call it Sacraments instead of magecraft, but he digressed.

Either way, from what he knew of this Sister, she definitely would have a way to find out their location. Heck, he probably could do it if he had access to some of their belongings, and the Sister used to be a magus ranked higher than Leonardo was.

"Something wrong? Heh, this is why you never won a round of poker against me, you wear your displeasure in your face."

Leonardo looked away from his phone to the man sitting in front of him. The 'prospective client' that he had told his team he was meeting. He sighed, "I think that's more you being WAY too good at them."

The man laughed, "Haha. Well...having a 'poker face' came with the territory as a politician."

"He then extended his phone to Leonardo. "Anyway, I've asked around in the DoM and got the info you asked for. Now...how much would that go in you, considering taking the job?"

"It's definitely something, yes," Leonardo replied, before starting to type, "Pardon me, I'll have to relay this to my team."

A string of messages then appeared on the group chat on Cipher.

Got the info. The ex-husband, Lucas Anderson, is registered at DoM as a Mixed-Blood of Incubus ancestry. But it's the lowest rank. He shouldn't be aware of it.

No actual powers. Just some traits like being attractive and having a high sex drive.

Also, Selene. Too late to hope your benefactor is not involved. But don't tell her the address. Hopefully, that'll slow her down enough.

St. Elmo's Church

Sister Maria sighed as she looked at her phone, seeing that Selene had not replied immediately when she pushed for the address.

A possible demon possession, and these spellcasters Selene was working with apparently saw it fit to conceal the location from the Church for whatever reason?

Secrecy was par for the course for magi, but this was ridiculous. If the demonic possession was indeed real, they would be endangering not just innocents but themselves.

A genuine demonic possession was beyond anyone in Millhaven to handle. Unless there were suddenly some big shots who arrived in the city without her knowing, she doubted anyone Selene was working with would survive such an encounter.

To do magecraft was to accept death, but magi was not stupid. They would not risk their lives, and thus their chance to further their family's thesis or worse, lose the entirety of their family's work.

That would be the rationale for magi. Hence, even for magi, those who dealt with dangerous beings such as demons were rare.

This was something she understood well from her former life as a magus.

However...since coming to America, she had started to realise that spellcasters were a different breed altogether. In a way, they were more amoral than magi, who were constrained by the commonly held 'code of conduct' for magi. But spellcasters were exactly those who eschewed those traditions.

Of course, that could mean that it was a magus who had rejected the unpleasant baggage that came with being a magus, but that could also mean someone who would use magecraft for something as banal as money, no matter what it cost, or even, as in this case, risking their lives and possibly the lives of innocents for some material gain.

In any case, it was quite clear that she had to do this the hard way then, since Selene did not comply.

On the table before her were several items. A handkerchief belonging to Selene that she had taken from the laundry, a bowl filled with holy water, a pendant of a small bottle that can be filled with water, and finally, a map of Millhaven.

She placed the handkerchief into the bowl of water before reaching to her belt, where a leather-bound book was clasped.

The Sister opened a page of the book, revealing an intricately painted image of a man holding a lance, with blood covering his eyes.

The iconography of St. Longinus.

"Adiuva me, Santo Longinus," she incanted, as she imagined her skin being pierced with thorns as a 'switch' to turn on her magic circuits charism blessing and circulate magical energy prayer power.

A one-line incantation was normally reserved for a simple spell.

However, were a magus from the Spiritual Evocation Department to see Sister Maria now, they would undoubtedly be astonished by the extent of 'fragmentary access' she had gained only with a one-line incantation.

In Spiritual Evocation, supplicating Ghost Liners, that was to say, Heroic Spirits to borrow parts of their power, was a standard practice. Hence, the term 'fragmentary access'.

But with only a one-line incantation, the amount of 'power' that could be borrowed was minuscule, certainly not to the extent Maria was doing.

This was the magecraft sacrament employed by Maria based on the van der Woud's artistic magecraft.

The van der Woud, the family Maria belonged to, was a family of magi that focused on creating beautiful paintings. Of course, in the World of Magecraft, beauty was not simply aesthetic but a valid magecraft foundation. In this case, the van der Wound attempted to capture what Plato called 'forms' into the beauty of paintings.

The sum of all that exists in the material realm, that is, objects, the abstraction of ideas, and phenomena, is a pale reflection or shadow of the true ideas or forms that exist eternally in the immaterial realm. These immutable, perfect, necessary, non-physical, and eternal metaphysical objects existing in the immaterial realm are the ‘original source’ of everything that exists, the one that ‘cast the shadows on the cave’, as Plato puts it.

The essence of beauty is something that brings those beholding it to transcend the material realm into the immaterial. The paintings of the van der Woud mages are of such quality that they resemble the forms of Plato’s true reality.

Thus, Maria, who gazed into the painting she had made with the iconography of St Longinus, transcended her state of mind to be closer to resembling that which was depicted on the painting itself, that of St. Longinus. Making her current state very suitable for using trance mediumship intercession prayer for St. Longinus.

St. Longinus, though most commonly known as the patron of soldiers, and thus was invoked in military matters, also had a longstanding connection with clarity of vision and clairvoyance, as his blind eyes were said to be cured after Christ's blood spilt onto them while on the cross. In Brazil, for instance, he was often invoked in prayers to find a lost item.

That was the facets of St. Longinus that Karlien focused on as she placed her hands into the water. How it must have felt to be stripped of one's blindness and see clearly for the first time in one's life. Not only physically, but spiritually, realising that the Messiah of the world had come.

It would be akin to someone finally seeing the sun for the first time. Everything was finally able to be seen properly.

In other words, a spell miracle of clairvoyance for scrying the owner of the handkerchief through the medium of water. Holy water in this case. And while 'holy water' only meant water blessed by the priests with no inherent magical property, it conceptually synergised well with the thaumaturgical dogmatic foundation used.

Maria scooped some of the water, putting them into the small bottle on a pendant.

She then placed the pendant on top of Millhaven's map, before the pendant started to move on its own, eventually stopping at a particular spot on the map.

"I see...on the Business District, huh? I suppose I'll have to head there myself."

Ava Lane

That was...odd.

Ava could not help but think that after she destroyed her target, the Rex Artus.

That last shot felt too accurate given the circumstances. In fact, it was not merely a long-range shot pinpointed at her location, fired completely without the targeting system due to her cloaking wings still functioning. But it was a shot fired at where she had precisely moved, almost as if the pilot could perfectly predict her movements.

It could be luck, but she had the feeling it was something more.

It was the sort of inexplicable 'miracle' that she had experienced in the battlefield, on account of her special ability that had her given the designation of 'Humanity Potential'.

The same one that had just occurred, which allowed her to take down her target swiftly.

Well, even beyond that, in Ava's opinion, it was a rather rookie mistake as a sniper to open fire and reveal one's location to a target that would be able to reach you before you can relocate. But she digressed.

Humanity's Potential was supposed to be a very rare ability. Enough so that it had made the brass accept her into the military despite pressure from her father, who had leveraged the important position of Albion Group as one of the largest Framewerk manufacturers

If this project they were in had two of such people...or perhaps more? In any case, it was something that, to Ava, made the project the Professor was working on more and more suspicious in terms of its importance.

Just more things to be added to the pile of mystery surrounding this project.

Piles that Ava could not afford to dwell on for now, as she found herself under fire from Horst's heavy assault gun.

Fortunately, her experience allowed her to react quickly. This, combined with her high synchronicity with her framewerk, meant that the response from Argent Wings was almost instantaneous, with practically zero delays between her control 'input' and the 'output' of her framewerk movement, allowing Ava to perform the almost inexplicable manoeuvre of parrying the bullets with her vibroblade, as she pilot Argent Wings to safety [Sychronised Agility].

Horst's pilot, Arrish, attempted to open a dialogue, something about being a dance partner, but frankly, Ava did not pay it much mind.

This was supposed to be a simulated battlefield, after all. Unnecessary banters only serve as a distraction that could endanger oneself and the team.

Thus, as Arrish was in the middle of taunting her, Argent Wings already charged forward, the marker lights mounted on its chassis lit up to mark her target. Specifically, the weak parts in between the armour that were necessary to allow the range of motions for a framewerk to function, given what she knew of Horst's model [Academic: Framewerk Technology].

At a close range, Ava planned for the sudden bright light to serve as a momentary distraction as the holographic illusion from Argent Wings' cloaking wings was deployed once more.

In the instant that the marker light hit Horst, Argent Wings had deftly shifted around its holographic copies, making it hard to parse which one was the real Argent Wings, as they charged from different directions at Horst, attempting to cut through the spots marked by the lights earlier.

However...

It was at that moment that fire rained upon the battlefield.

Sleeping Thunder had fired the whole arsenal of weapons available to it, exhibiting an incredible level of firepower that would be able to change the tide of a battle in an instant from sheer destruction.

Even Ava, who had some idea of the capability of Sleeping Thunder. Hence, referring to Sleeping Thunder as a 'mobile artillery' and designating neutralising it as their 'win condition', they did not expect this level of firepower.

It seemed that, like her own framewerk, Argent Wings, Sleeping Thunder had received quasi-legal modification to push its firepower to the absolute limit. However, those sorts of modifications came with a cost, namely that they damaged your weapon system, which would risk them malfunctioning.

Meaning if they survived this, it would open an opportunity to take down Sleeping Thunder.

But, of course, first, she had Horst to deal with. Or rather, she was already in the middle of a charging motion and haphazardly backing out now would leave her exposed to a counterattack.

Amidst the backdrop of fires from Sleeping Thunder, Argent Wings continued its charge toward Horst, with only Ava's experience allowing her to remain calm and focused on her current target despite the sheer destruction done on the other side of the battlefield.

Ava Lane

Ava had to restrain herself from asking if Elora was okay the moment she saw her crippled frame.

She had heard that the girl had an exceptional degree of synchronicity with her framewerk. As someone who also had high synchronicity, Ava could imagine the pain that would come from such damage to one's framewerk.

Still, that was simply that 'exchange' one needed to accept to pilot a framewerk with such a high degree of synchronicity. It would do her well to get used to the pain before they hit the actual battlefield.

The more pressing issue was that members of Team Apple started to converge on Logic Diver's position, leaving Argo pinned down.

An unfortunate situation. An assessment that Bugs appeared to have shared. Well, given Argo's speed, Ava wouldn't write her off just yet, but it was probably best if she provided some support.

@AtomicNut"Argent to Cockroach. Go back to the original plan and take down Thunder. That remained a primary objective—"

As long as Sleeping Thunder was taken down, victory remained possible, especially if they managed to conserve Mother Goose on their side as a heavy hitter.

"—I'll go ahead and support Arg—"

The rest of Ava's order was interrupted, as she was forced to make an evasive manoeuvre, attempting to evade an energy round shot by Rex Artus.

Fortunately, given that Argent Wings' stealth system was still operational and that Logic Diver's analysis had been compromised, the shot would be made purely through biological vision, greatly reducing accuracy. Given her framewerk's speed and her quick reflexes due to her rate of synchronisation, Ava was somewhat confident that she would be able to dodge it.

However...from her experience, she knew that nothing in the battlefield was absolute, and she prepared to repel the shot with the shining fingers installed on Argent Wings.

She then would close the distance toward Rex Artus, his position being given away after making the shot, before engaging it in close quarters with the Argent Wings' main weapon, the vibroblade.

At the same time, with a brief flash, three holographic duplicates were deployed through the Cloaking Wings, as the now seemingly four Argent Wings moved in a dazzling manner, shifting around with great speed. using the holographic images as decoys and confusing the target to create an opening for a decisive strike.

"...What do you mean by Church agents?"

As Derald walked through the door, he heard the voice of Gabriel.

Turning around, he would see Gabriel, looking somewhat perplexed and flustered, but still far too composed for someone who was just on the receiving end of a mental interference magecraft.

His chest was noticeably rising and descending rhythmically. The pastor was clearly doing some sort of meditative breathing technique. Derald would remember from one of his classes in General Fundamentals that a basic way to resist mental interference magecraft was proper breathing technique to clear one's mind.

Typically, most people using these techniques won't be able to resist more sophisticated mental interference, such as Derald's Fake ID Badge Mystic Code. However, because of his rather barebones magecraft ability, apparently, the effect of his suggestion spell had been greatly reduced.

Gabriel then started coughing, before waving his hands to clear out the remaining cigarette smoke, "Sorry. Don't really do well with cigarettes."

He continued, as he looked at Derald incredulously, "Anyway...you good? I don't really like cigarette smoke, that's why I smoke only cigars, but man, that was definitely the worst smoke I've ever tasted. I got really dizzy there for a moment, if not for some breathing exercises a friend taught me. You sure you're okay smoking that?"

Then, almost as if an afterthought, he added, pointing to the no-smoking sign, "Oh, also. You can't smoke in a classroom."

Fatma shook her head, "No, I never really heard anything. They've always been pushy in us becoming Christians. Be baptised, confirm our faith, receive communion, the whole thing. But I mean...they're devout Christians who truly believe in the Church's teachings. I would hope they're insistent on their grandson becoming a Christian if they really believe that one cannot be saved without believing in Christ."

Then, after a moment, she added, "It always annoyed my ex-husband, though. He became an atheist because he felt his parents' Christian faith was too overbearing."

Amari Residence - Evan Amari's Bedroom

Evan's eyes noticeably darted to his right, as if looking at something that MiMi could not see. Presumably, this was the alleged demon possessing him.

After a while, Evan spoke again, "He said that you're here just to understand and not harm. Also, that you're willing to speak to him and are asking what you should call him. That's all, though. He's not...saying anything aside from that. He also never answered me if I tried to talk to him, so..."

Then, after a bit, Evan added, briefly glancing at the door, "Oh, also, he said that your weird friend thinks you sending her and her dog out was stupid."

@PureWitch@Thanatos 7

I am glad there are at least 3 people, because that's the standard starting number for party members in Persona anyway.

There's also another guy who applied late, IIRC, but just hasn't had the chance to be integrated into the RP. Dunno if they're still interested though.
