The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio

I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly.
I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists.
I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...

I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.

I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.

I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time.
I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.

Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.

Hokay, the IC is active with the intro and the brief for the first mission. It's a (seemingly) straight-forward small one to begin with, just to ease us into things - but you know how it is, from small things...

Also, no, it might not be 1000% super-realistic from a military POV or whatever, but this is what we're doing, and what kind of thing you're getting - here's where you jump off if that's not your bag.

Feel free to intro your characters how you wish; I've begun with Ryan assuming everyone is in the room, and feel free to have your characters there already, or turn up late - though, please don't everyone do that, as it'll be pretty stupid if he's addressing an empty room :P
Also feel free to do much as I did with my post, and introduce what they were doing before, and any NPC's they are friends with, etc.

There is no post order, btw - any of you who have played anything I've run before will know that I am viciously opposed to post orders.
Once I have a reply from all the active players, or a week passes - whichever comes first - I'll get another IC post up moving us on, and so on and so on. If you want to do collab posts as well, please go head. However, do make sure that you're talking to other people as well as just each other, and that your collab is at least relevant to the plot and moves things on.

Other than that, eager to get moving!
A chorus of gentle, discordant, yet still musical birdsong drifted across the plains as dawn rose on the planet that had been dubbed 'Avalon' by its' human visitors.
Though alien, the sounds of the creatures had already become familiar over the months the Expeditionary Force from far-off Earth had been resident. And, much as the sounds of their own birds back home, they quickly became part of the backdrop to a community coming awake. In this case, they were lost among the sounds of a base being woken up. Power tools, engines turning on, announcements over PA speakers and shouting voices calling out time for morning exercises rose into the air of the plains, alongside the sounds of the town growing next door.
Amongst the rising sounds of life, on one of the bases' many byways and streets hurried one of the Expeditionary Forces' many pilots. Normally calm, collected, laid-back and cool he was instead flustered, hassled and alarmed.
He was late.
Major Ryan Kincaide was due to deliver a briefing to his squadron, his first as their newly-appointed commander. He knew their names, exactly what he had to brief them on, and had all of his notes prepared... he was just late, for a variety of piss-poor reasons.
This left him hustling down the bases' streets, byways and alleys, cutting corners to try and get to the briefing rooms in time.
His phone - the cell network at the base was small, and only recently set up - rang and he grumbled as he juggled his tablet compter and notes to reach the phone.
"Wassup," he growled into the phone as he dodged past a formation of marching marines, and pressed the phone to one ear.
"You're late," chided the voice of his WSO. "I hope you're on your way, don't want to make a bad impression for your new adoring fanbase".
"I'm doing the best I can, I'm virtually there," he lied as he skittered across the road in front of a Hummvee and jogged across a parking lot. The operations building was on the other side, and he shouldered through the door.
"You're a terrible liar," Diane replied with a smirk that carried into her voice. "In any case, I'll see you in a few minutes. I think they're all here. Hope the mission is at least a good one to make up for it".
She hung up, cutting him off from any snarky comebacks as he turned a corner, bumped into a female pilot who scowled at him, and then took a half-dozen turns, finding himself at the briefing room. Diane raised an eyebrow at him, and he glowered at the red-headed aviator as she opened the door with a smirk.
Ryan took a breath, and stepped in, straightening his back and pushing the flustered look off his face to replace with a sterner, more officious one.
"Ladies, Gentlemen, Good morning," he announced in a firm, clear voice that had only a hint of his southern drawl to it as he walked quickly and smartly down the aisle, and took position at the lectern at the head of the room.
"I'm Major Kincaide, but you can call me 'Showman', or 'Major'. I will be your commanding officer in the 101st. I've looked over your files, and I can see I have an interesting group. I'm looking forward to working with all of you.
"And it looks like I'm not going to have to wait long to find out how we do, as the powers that be have decreed that we have a mission to fly. So listen up, here's the mission". He tapped some icons on the screen of his tablet, resting on the lectern, and the wall-screen behind him lit up with a mirrored display, showing the operational area as a stylised map with labelled icons.
"Survey teams have been mapping the area approximately one hundred miles due south of our position. It's a fertile area; gently rolling plains, cut by some river valleys, and thickets of evergreen woodlands. There are remains of some Avalonian settlements, but no intact or permanent structures. The survey teams were attracted by strong magnetic readings from drone and recon overflights that could indicate resources in the area, or other things worth investigating. Whatever it was they were looking for, it seems like the Yerrill are interested as well, as the survey team reported being buzzed by a Yerrill fighter on the second day. The craft have returned since, in increasing numbers within the last few days. They hid after the first time, but the fighters have appeared to actively been looking for them. They clearly need support, and if there's a Yerrill base or installation this close to base, we also need to locate it. So, that's going to be our job".
A few more taps of icons, and the screen changed to show overlays of flight paths and itineries on the map of the operational area. A circle centered on a dot representing the survey teams' location, stretching out from there to a radius approximate to the Yerrills' known range.
"We set up a CAP over the area, and monitor for any Yerrill activity. The survey team will also have a small detachment of ground forces to help co-ordinate with us and protect them as well. If we sight any hostiles, we engage them and shoot 'em out of the sky. Our secondary role will be to patrol out to the estimated range of the Yerill fighters and look for any kind of base, installation, or other... thing... they're using to launch from to engage the survey team and get as much info on it as we can to send back to base. Sighted hostiles so far number up to four craft at one time; but as you all know: the Yerrill have no serial numbers or markings, so it's hard to know, visually at least, if it's just four returning craft, or several more."
He looked over the faces in front of him. "It's nothing too fancy, complicated, or head-scratching for a first mission. Find the bad guys, protect our guys, and maybe take some photos. Anything weird happens, we deal with it when it comes up. All of our planes are ready to fly, maintenance has given them a good going over; put some air in the tyres, changed the air fresheners, tightened up all the screws and they're ready as they can be. We're wheels-up at 0730, which is 90 minutes from now. Any questions?"
His keen eyes searched the faces in front of him, taking in each one and trying to anticipate any comments, opinons or ideas. He had read their files, but the people he didn't know, their quirks, humour, demeanour; those things didn't come across. What more would they have to say, about him or the mission, he was eager to know more. Eager to see how they performed in the air and on the mission; and after, what would they be like, especially if they did get into action. What then?
He shook off the circling thoughts and tuned back into his people, waiting for a reply.
This looks super neat, I'll be working on a CS to get up soon. Though I have to ask.

So an Obrez is off the table?

I'm kidding. Mostly.

Cool, it'll be good to have another player. Look forward to seeing your sheet!

And the character sheet will answer your question - it says standard-issue sidearms only.
TBH, you won't be using it enough for it to be an issue. It's mainly a hold-over from earlier RP's I've run where I had to deal with players that made me head-desk with the ludicrous amounts of/types of personal ordnance their fighter pilots were toting around, despite the fact the game had little-to-no ground-based combat whatsoever.
"Sup?... any new interesting discoveries going on?"

Silver looked up as the green pegasus he'd spotted earlier came up to the table, a friendly expression on his face.
"Oh!" he said with a slight surprise, and then nodded a hello, dabbing around his muzzle with a napkin before smiling. "Morning. Um, well, guess you noticed my cartography corps bags?" he said with a nod toward the saddlebags around his middle. "As for discoveries; well, that's what I'm here to find out. Apparently there were some strange reports from the Everfree Forest are - shocking, I know - and yours truly got assigned to go and try and make some kind of sense of it by taking some measurements, maps and photos, and making some notes on what might have changed out there." He shrugged, but the smile stayed on his face. "I know it's a dangerous place, and quite unpredictable, but we try and keep as good maps as we can to keep everypony as safe as possible" he glanced around and then leaned over the table. "And between you and me, I like the excitement of going somewhere a little dangerous and mysterious myself, too"
He grinned and sat back. "Name's Silverwind by the way. Nice to meet you! What brings you to Ponyville?" he asked in reply as he sat back. "This is my first time visiting. It's an uh... interesting place," he replied with a raised eyebrow, as he looked back toward where Discord could still be seen.

@Pilatus If you want your WSO to be an NPC that's fine, you can always keep most control over them and sketch out their personality, appearance, etc through RP as we go along. They don't necessarily need to be as fully fleshed out as a full character if you don't want. I might take control of them once in a while just to help move things along or point something out, just as the GM - and that might come in handy.

@Slypheed Cecilia looks fine; her personality and bio look great to me so far, but fair enough if you want to change them later too. Please feel free to add her to the characters tab. Since that's everyone who was interested with a character posted, I'll get to work on the introductory IC post to get us moving - hopefully up within a few hours, end of the day at the latest.
BTW, I know it's a two seater. I'll make an addendum for the WSO.

He looks great otherwise though, and I'm eager to RP with your character too. We have a good spread of personalities and genders so far too, as well as an interesting mix of aircraft to boot.
So I can haz mine put into tabby?

Sorry, I didn't see it had changed from WIP to finished. Yuri is fine, sure - he can go into the characters tab
All done here, just need to proofread and I'll post it tomorrow.

All good - jist waiting for everyone to get their characters up so we can begin.

"Why doesn't it have more rockets?" (was expecting, like, 40... just like BM-21)

"It has enough."

Do your lads nick-name them the same as ours? A friend of mine had a brother in the Royal Artillery and they apparently called the MLRS 'grid squre removal service...! I like that one, made me chuckle.

There's mostly naval stuff around these parts, Portsmouth is one of the places on the South Coat of England the RN calls home, which is why we have all the tourist attractions around here mixed in with operational stuff. Not to mention everyone and their grandmothers' dog has a connection to something to do with the navy one way or the other. It's good in some ways, but it tends to be a bit like running the gauntlet if you're on a night out to the pub.
I probably don't see as much as you, as I suppose it's a bit easier to get up-close-and-personal to the land stuff, but it's still cool to see stuff when it comes around, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of the attractions for moving to the this area compared to where I used to live, which had absolutely zero interesting features. The only good thing there is the airsoft site in a disused shopping mall.

Land Rovers are a lot more common here. I cycle past a nice ex-military one that evidently belongs to a collector most days I cycle to work. It's still got the old markings and has the radio antenna bases still installed. I'll get a pic one day. There also a Humber Pig that just sits in someone's drive in my home city too.
I think because Portsmouth is a military town, there's quite a lot of stuff like that locally. One of the old defensive forts here was scheduled to become a museum, and they got to the point of bringing in a bunch of vehicles to exhibit, but never opened the museum. Now it's a park and ride for the local hospital, with a Chieftan tank out front, and apparently some more vehicles inside.

Just Bio to go, still using Mig-31

Sounds good to me! Looking forward to seeing it.
