The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio
I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly. I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists. I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...
I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.
I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.
I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time. I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.
Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.
Sorry, I'm evaluating. In Macross, the mecha are so tall because the aliens they're fighting are that tall, too. 18-24' mecha are better off than 40' mecha, but still have pros and cons.
They have pros and cons, yes; if you're evaluating them as a real thing. But this is a setting where they do exist and are used commonly, frequently, and effectively. It's about suspension of disbelief and embracing the conventions and themes of the setting. If you're expecting it to follow and adhere to realistic physics, or consequences or whatever else - then you're probably looking at the wrong game. Need I point out the facts that the setting also is one where there was a dimensional collapse and multiple worlds crosssed over? I'd say that's more far-fetched and unlikely than the fact there's 25-foot tall combat mecha. 'Realism' is hardly the point - it's about escapism, enjoyment, story-telling and fun. Embrace the setting and the genre for what it is - not what it isn't.
Finally, embrace the setting. I have seen real robot mecha-themed anime in the past where people have got spectacularly stuck on the 'real' part, and not the 'anime' and 'sci-fi' part. The plot is king and the story is the point. Dramatic licence and tension will always win out over the 'realism' of the setting or the scene, because that's what the point is. And really... this is a setting where multiple dimensions have crashed together, and various species and races of people pilot bipedal giant robots. Realism isn't exactly in massive abundance, so trying to explain away every piece of scientific and technical information just... isn't the point. Getting into the minutiae of the tech isn't the point, and isn't the goal.
Quoted from my opening post about the RP and the setting. Honestly; if you're not excited enough about the idea of piloting a cool mecha in a semi-apocalyptic world where you can be any one of a number of different species or races - including ones you make up yourself - and fighting against anything from other mecha, to genocidal robots, to rampaging dragons, then I'm not sure what else will convince you?
So this is the 40' tall standing target kind of mecha. Hmm.
Uhh... no? Did you read the lore? Also, if you don't like it/want to embrace the setting and it's conventions, then don't join in with snarky, smart-ass comments, thanks. What exactly were you expecting? I've made it clear at every point that mecha anime like Gundam and Macross would be the major inspiration for the mecha aspect.
Probably the longest running and definitely most stable game I've ever been in is three players and four characters. Also a modern military one, so personally I'd be fine with just the three of us and growing if more people come later.
Quality over quantity sort of thing.
You make a good point, and I've had similar experiences myself. Bearing that in mind then, perhaps what I'll do instead is to get an IC post up shortly and we'll proceed with just the characters currently posted, and that way if anyone else wants to join in at a later date they can do so. And any other characters we want/need to make we can make ourselves. Nothing to stop any of us from playing multiple characters if we want to.
I'll try and get an IC post up in the next couple of days, work and other responsibilities permitting.
I am still interested, I was hoping to see an IC post or something like that.
I need a few more characters before I can start, honestly. Three of us is okay, but I was hoping for four or five. Especially because we had a fairly good turnout for the int check and at the start of the OOC
Garrett grimaced and swore colourfully in a handful of languages as the Arthropod lumbered its' way onto the scope. Of course, most of those languages he only knew for those swear words, but the effect was what he wanted. Valika's message came over the comm channels, and Garrett gave a curt nod of approval as he replied. "Roger, Redknight. I'll give you some covering fire; you concentrate on those cannons before they can make a mess of us, over!" Slaloming and weaving to give a harder target, the Sentinel dodged and surged between the plumes of dirty smoke thrown up by near-misses. Even under the enclosing womb of armour around the machines' cockpit, he could hear debris patter and ring off of the armoured hull of the AUG. Deft and quick movements of his fingers and hands bought the AUGs' smart beam gun into play, the long-barrelled weapon unfolding into position to be grippd in the metal-shod hands. Immediately, the barrel started to weave and bob as it tracked in on targets and with a distinctive sound, bright charged particle beams whipped off, targeted at MA's even as they fired at the AUG. Snow's shots were decisive and true; guided both by the smartgun's tracking and his own sharp, albeit single-eyed, gaze, and the MA's he targeted exploded or slumped into piles of scrap.
So further to my previous post... is there still any interest? I've been waiting to see any other character sheets go up and any other form of engagement or activity, but there's been nothing since my last post.
I'll wait a couple more days, but if there's nothing else, then I'm going to drop this, since the hype and interest people had seems to have just... evaporated since the interest check and the OOC went up.
So, are there any more characters forthcoming and any other interest and activity?
Everyone seemed pretty keen over on the interest check, but now the OOC is up... it all seems a bit dead.
I'll wait another few days, but if there's nothing else happening and no further activity, then I'm probably going to call the game dead, because it's been almost a week and there's been no real activity, and I'd be expecting at least some kind of engagement and activity at this point.
Admittedly, I have been on holiday, but at the same time; there's only so much I can do to stir up hype. I've posted the OOC, I've posted a wealth of information on the setting and background, and I've posted my own character as an example so...
