@The Grey Dust oooooh. :D I look forward to reading it!!
(Though abide by guild rules while writing. No 18+ stuff (sorry no smut) in your entry text and if material is too vividly descriptive of potentially upsetting things (to be decided at the contest administrator's discretion) a disclaimer might be added to the beginning to warn those readers who might be sensitive to it.)
@Infamous Empath Sorry, I don't think it was clear - you can use settings and characters that you've created before, but the entry itself has to be written specifically for this contest. No excerpts of already-existing works. Besides this I'd also advise against putting bits of your novel online if you ever intend to publish - publishers can be pretty strict about their plagiarism checkers and it'll be impossible to completely remove your writing from the database.
@Vesuvius00 It's entirely up to the entrant. We've had poets, epic storytellers, and all manner of other formats. Go creative - the theme is intentionally designed to be as unrestricted as possible - so long as there is some connection, however abstract and tangential, to the concept of "reality", it's good. (For the record RPGC has never turned someone's entry away for not adhering to the theme. We like seeing what crazy off-the-wall things you can come up with.) You can use all characters and settings as long as they're your own creation.
Updated to include username disclosure policy, cause I was a nonce and forgot to include that in the initial posting. If there's anything else missing, just flail at me.
As many a philosopher will tell you, reality is subjective. It depends entirely on the observer. Objectively speaking, humans are obsessed with the notion of reality β of breaking it, of defining it, of wondering what might exist beyond the edges. Are there alternate realities? Is there even one tangible thing that can be defined as βrealityβ? How does reality handle the idea of fiction, of fictitious characters and things that should not be possible within the rules that we abide by?
These are the questions we pose to you today. You will have until midnight on Tuesday, May 23rd to reflect on them and write a piece regarding this concept, its tangibility (or intangibility, as the case may be) and the various implications thereof.
Bonus Categories
The Nature of Reality β What makes the world turn? What rules does the universe abide by? Dance with the idea. Shape it into something poignant and thought-provoking and share it with us. The Fine Line β Some may say that reality is entirely subjective. At what point does an individualβs reality become so warped that it seems a delusion, a fantasy to the rest of us? Show us. Buckling Under β Throughout the most tumultuous times, the laws that guide our universe, our reality, remain constant. Sometimes with catastrophic consequences. Shattered Space β By contrast, there are times when things get so bad that reality justβ¦ breaks. Show us what happens when βthe rulesβ go out the window.
Remember, submit your entries to the @RPGC entry PM box no later than May 23rd. If you have any questions pose them here or in a PM to @RomanAria.
Remember to specify whether you want your username disclosed or not. If you say nothing I will assume you wanted to remain anonymous.
Concept courtesy of @RIGHTEOUSwench on the Theme Thread. Feel free to drop your own ideas in. Bonus themes provided by the old crew of @Keyguyperson and @darkwolf687. Thanks to @mdk for giving us the reins of his contest and all of the guild staff for making this a safe, wonderful place for us to develop our creativity.
@Vashonn Yeah sorry about that. My computer is a pile of poo at times. In any case I've gotten the hefty graphics things done and am now working on coding my post to make it pretty. ETA <1 hour. Thank you for your patience.
As I said... I had a few technical difficulties (Namely, the banner art getting corrupted the last time I tried to save and now my computer is overheating every five minutes! -.-) Contest is still going up tonight, just might be a few more hours belated!
