Persona - Black Crown [IC]

Crime is on the rise in the city centres of Tokyo, more seemingly random acts of criminal activity, perpetrated by what appeared to be unconnected individuals. A certain air seems to pervade over the districts... Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akasaka, Roppongi, and even Akihabara. It's suffocating, choking, yet you look around you and no one seems to notice it. Can they not see it? Can they not feel it? The yoke of oppression that insidiously curls it's fingers around their neck...?

Then you see it, an app. A black crown adorned upon an eye... The rumored app. You open it, and as you expected it just asks one single question...

"What is your desire?"

You type in your answer, surprisingly sincere yet there's a bit of frustration pent up that leads you to do so, and just like that... You feel the world around you begin to warp, you look around in panic and surprise, then return to the screen in your hand, perhaps hopeful for answers... Yet only one phrase is visible amidst the red and black of the app.

"Welcome to Black Crown, Destined Ruler"

Another Persona RP?

So welcome to Persona: Black Crown. This is a Persona RP in an original universe within the setting of Persona 5, which is a real world location, Tokyo Japan (yeah it's real can you believe it?) The RP will take place AFTER your character has answered the call of the mysterious app, Black Crown. Awakening to your unique Black Crown Persona, an Authority, and the ability to traverse the mysterious Metarealm.

While most of that is self-explanatory if you've played Persona games before, one thing must be explained. Authority.

An Authority is an ability granted by the App. It usually takes the form of the user's desires, and is usually a singular ability. For example, it can cause someone to obey one command, put someone to sleep, cause someone to go into a rage, or even wipe a small portion of someone's recent memory.

There will be themes of crime and conspiracy in this RP, and of course like any good Persona game, focus on characters and bonds as well. Being that this is Tokyo, there will be no shortage of fun things to do if you're not traversing the Metarealm. Though for those that want to, you are free to go in and out of it with no day and activity limit. You may even hang out with a fellow ally within it.

With all that being said and done, please feel free to ask questions. More will be added to this over time until it has enough players and is ready to go.

It will be indicated in the character sheet, but the theme of your Black Crown Persona is tyrants, and the self-indulgent. Figures in history who indulged in their vices.

Things to Know

Using the Black Crown App

• In order to use your Authority, or enter the Metarealm, you must use the app.
• When entering the Metarealm, your appearance will not change instantly. To do that, you must activate the app again and do a Kamen Rider-like transformation.
• When using your Persona, you must activate the app again.
• Your weapons are granted by the app also.
• Your Persona flames are not blue. They are red.
• IMPORTANT: There seem to be numerous Black Crown users, however not all of them have an Authority (in fact almost all of them don't).

Metarealm and Kingdoms

• Full information on how Kingdoms and Domains work will be revealed through play, however below is stuff you should know.
• A Kingdom is not tied to any individual like a Palace, in fact it is shared to you very early by another character that rulers of Kingdoms can change.
• A Kingdom encompasses a whole district in Tokyo. The very first one we will be playing in is of course, Shibuya.
• Targets and villains will be made clear through play, but once again the themes are around crime and conspiracy. Expect some of this and touching on modern ills.

The RP in General

• Our main enemies other than Shadows will be other Persona users.
• There is a Highschool and University for the purposes of players being easier to interact with. I suggest everyone make their character attend these in some capacity. It is of course possible for you to elect to have a character in a different school or do something else.
• I would prefer a ratio of mostly Japanese nationality with a couple foreigners for this RP. Halfs can also be accepted but less sparingly.

Spells and Skills
So as all are aware, skills and spells of all levels are available, from the weakest to the strongest, however the strength of which will affect the amount of times you may use them all at once. Weaker spells are faster and can be used in multiple combinations, or repeatedly, while strong ones are definitively powerful singular uses. As you become stronger, you will gain access to more slots.

• Strong: 1 use per post
• Medium: 2 uses per post
• Weak: 4 uses per post

In your slots you can also gain passives that can affect things. Examples will be shown further down.

In the terms of Special Skills, they have limited uses in general per foray into the Metarealm. All special skills share the same usage count. As you become stronger, you can gain more uses, and even new special skills under special circumstances and events.

Buff Skills
Buff skills will be treated as a sudden boost. For example when using Sukukaja, your speed and agility (or that of an ally) is increased until the next post. Buff skills also possess the same amount of usage as Medium spells, so you can use them once before being able to use 2 Weak skills, or 1 Medium skill.

The exception to this is Power Charge and Concentrate.

For Power Charge and Concentrate, they must be used at the end of your post, and using them will make your character vulnerable to being attacked. However, if you are still standing for your next post, your next chosen attack will become significantly more powerful.

Passive Skills
Passive skills modify your current skills, and can even affect your Special Skills if they are the correct type. For example, Fire Amp could increase the power of your Special Skill if that skill is of the fire element. These skills are generally self-explanatory, so I will simply compile a list of them and what they do, as they won't do the exact same thing as they do in game.

Hane Highschool (Root of Rulers)
Located a five minute train ride from Shibuya station, and then a ten minute walk, Hane High is considered a "high level" public school, meaning among public schools it is considered rather close to a private school. They say that when it was first built, it was planned to be, but the magnanimous Nanjo family that funded it's construction and establishment decided to make it a public school at the last minute. Hane High is known for being a leader in terms of technology education, with a wealth of computer labs and having the rare distinction of being a public school that manages to get the latest in technology. It is also an elevator school, with Kengen University being where most graduating students go for further education.

剣厳大学

Kengen University (Disciplined Blade)
A prestigious university, ranking highly in education for law, sciences, technology, economics, politics, and surprisingly, specifically fine arts, performing arts, and classical music. Among those it's absolute top ranking department is law and economics. Kengen University is actually quite small, a campus comprising of mainly a large 40 floor building, a small park, and a few small administration buildings, however, being funded by the Nanjo family, it is afforded rather special privileges when it comes to technology. Most students in Hane High do wind up studying here, but it doesn't mean they can't fail to qualify, especially if they're applying for the high ranked departments.

OST: Precipice of Defeat

For the first night in this town's lifetime it was beset with an atmosphere of unease. The feeling of a shadow looming over each and every soul, the blissful ignorance of the unattuned, and the maddening paranoia of those with a sixth sense. The feeling was unoppressive and soft during the day, just a little bit of a strange feeling, like dejavu, something to pause for but not stop. Everyone who went about their day didn't notice it at all while the sun was up, not even the Shinigami native to Soul Society, however as soon as that sun dipped below the horizon... There it was. Like a hand reaching out for the heart, it tightened, just enough to feel constricted, but not so much that one would be choked out. And then... It was gone, those who felt this would be welcomed by an empty silence, dark streets that felt like something lurked within the shadows. On any other night there would truly be nothing there, after all, Sagamiyama was a safe town... But tonight... Tonight was different.

Shortly after sunset, all of the substitute shinigami would receive a message on their soul pagers from Ouga.

"Be ready as Shinigami, there's no telling what will happen. Patrol near your homes for tonight. Stay safe while me and Shouko try to figure out where they'll be. If you need help, or there's a Hollow you sighted, let everyone know on your pagers."

Sara's trip out into the night was quiet, to say the least, but perhaps a little too quiet considering the excitement of the night prior. She got a message from Ouga not too long after leaving, already asking everyone to be ready and in their Shinigami forms. It seemed simply enough, stay near their homes and be on a lookout. Not to mention they didn't know the hollow's next move at all...

Yet, to the misfortune of Sara, she felt it, a presence. Coming directly from her house...

Around the Stone household there was a creeping shadow of sorts, yet it's presence was not felt even as Darius arrived home to his loving wife. What was it? Why was it here? Questions that can be answered by asking the same thing to a tiger whose prey sat right in front of it. A kind of primal hunger and bloodthirst that was strong, yet so masterfully hidden. The scent of one with notable spiritual pressure lingered upon this house and so it stalked it, watched it, the one it wanted was yet here... But what is this? Who is this? Much weaker but so pure... A snack before the meal? No, it was far too light out. Such a move would bring attention... Best to wait.

Sagamiyama - Sakuhana Park

"What is this tree... Why does it call me?" The falling ethereal petals of the Sakuhana Park sakura blossom continued to fall tonight and out of season just like it always has for the last ten years. An urban phenomenon that the people of the town have called a miracle. A new shrine was even erected at the very base of it where people would give offerings to it, believing it to be the work of some sort of kami. Tonight was a full moon and the light of which reflected off of the pink petals as they fell through the soft night breeze.

"Is it this tree itself... Or something else within it?", Regalhorn, the mighty Hollow that had gained strength during a period where there were no Shinigami sent to the human world had gained quite a level of intelligence, enough to command groups of Hollow and have a purpose for each maneuver at least. His instincts called him back to this park, or rather... This was his goal the first time he was here, yet he did not know why he came here, or why he wanted to be here.

He stood there, seemingly tranquil as his cape-like hair flowed softly in the breeze. Though, unlike last night, he was here alone... He had told the other Hollow to simply... Hunt. The Shinigami could not ignore their activity after all, meanwhile he would be here... Almost contemplating. Some Hollow would have lingered for awhile, unable to understand why he did not choose to come hunt, but ultimately their beast-like instincts and desires would have them move on and do his bidding. Such simple creatures he thought... Here at this tree, he knew... Something was calling.

After everyone had eaten they set about to doing some training. It had been maybe a couple months since most of them had done a training session like this with Ouga and Shouko, the first time being when they had been made substitute Shinigami. It was a lot of refreshing the basics to begin with, and exercising the skills that they had acquired since then. Those who were refining their swordplay or hand to hand skills would spar, while the others pursuing Kido arts would meditate and refine their focus and control. It was repetition from moment to moment, Nina was given an invitation to refresh her skills too.

After awhile they finally began to learn new skills and techniques based on the results of their prior practice. Take what they had learned to attempt to create something new, or be taught something new.

Ouga would teach Darius a new Hakuda skill, the one he asked about earlier, which Ouga used. Soushouho, or Twin Palm Cannon. A powerful Hakuda technique that concentrated Reiatsu into both hands, and having them clash at the same time as striking the target, creating an explosive strike that was two-fold. Understanding timing and distance was key to executing it properly. It boasted immense shattering power, able to break defenses and stances to open enemies up.

Bakuto's insistence on sparring with Ouga led to a steady improvement in his form. Bakuto already had the will and strength to fell Hollows outside of his league, but his precision and finer points were missing which could lead to shallow strikes or leaving openings even an unrefined Hollow could take advantage of.

Tony and Rei would ultimately spar one another and practice their skills and techniques. Tony had a grasp on fighting with longer blades, and so Ouga prior had instructed him in exclusively two handed forms and styles, while Rei had the grace for one handed. They were to develop new techniques and practice them from today onwards.

Nina and Sara were ultimately together though for different reasons. Sara was instructed in how to focus her Reiryoku more finely, that even the smallest amount could be deadly. That she need not use her entire store. Through this process she would be taught a new Kido spell. Meanwhile Nina would practice her footwork and Hoho skills to improve her mobility while fighting. Ultimately it was a kind of new improvised footwork.

Afternoon...

The training grounds did not easily reflect the time of day if at all. When everyone was done, they emerged to Sagamiyama in the afternoon. They'd be allowed to go along their ways home, but tonight to also be ready to deploy if there's hollow activity. Shouko and Ouga went on ahead to be ready leaving everyone to head home, do shopping before heading home, or any other ritual they felt they needed to do. Getting rest might be paramount however, seeing as how many Hollows were present the night before, it wasn't a stretch to think there'd be some waiting for night again to begin prowling. They were told by Emi not to forget their Substitute Shinigami medallions too, since they were faster than using a Konpaku.

"Ahh... before you all go, take these too", she pulled out a small basket of what appeared to be drop candies, not unlike the konpakus, but they were all in small plastic packets. They were green on colour with the kanji for "heal" or "fix" on it. "Give anyone these, or take them yourself, if your spirit is injured. Just remember it won't fix physical injuries. Just take a bunch", she told them. "Oh and you, kid, Mitsu-something, eat one right now, and your spirit form will be healed by the end of the hour. I couldn't offer them when you all came earlier since I didn't finish this batch yet", singling Mitsuaki out with his injury, he had the chance to try them. They were sweet, but ended bitter, more bitter than raw tea leaves. If it wasn't healing candy it was some sort of prank, usually candy like this ended sweet.

"Ah of course, I recommend drinking some water with it too. There wasn't any way to get rid of the bitterness", she said, after he or anyone had tried one.

"Good luck to you all tonight and tomorrow and whatever. Don't die... Especially you Nina, you just got back", after everyone had grabbed a bunch the front door slam shut, the rushed fix job along the edges and front trembling with the threat of breaking once again, especially with the force she put into that.

The questions about Ouga and his shikai which they did see last night did not surprise him, but he forgot how these greenhorns had yet to see it, or even learn about it for that matter. There was also the matter of what he meant, of course he knew they simply came at him with all they had with intent to strike him, but that was the first step, the desire. Forging a true resolve to take the winning blow took some more experience which they'd all need. To that end he would have them hunt more Hollows later, but for now it was training.

"Of course, but the will is the first step. When you have the courage to make that first step, then the killing blow is but a single decisive action away", so it was all theatrics, at least in part. Those who 'passed' were the ones who had that will to go for an attack that would do harm. Then the question about his zanpakuto came into the picture... Super Duper Sword they said,

"... Ah you mean my Shikai, or first release. I guess I hadn't told you all about this thing yet, seemed outta your league but now that you've seen it guess it's no harm tellin' ya", he swung his zanpakuto over his shoulder and kneeled down. In turn everyone would make themselves comfortable... Or remained standing if they were a little weird.

"The Shikai or first release is the next step of the zanpakuto, achieved through training and communing with our zanpakuto. Most shinigami won't ever achieve this without years of training. That's really all it is, but achieving it is a huge boost in strength. Your reiryoku rises with your reiatsu, combat abilities are enhanced, and your zanpakuto changes form and comes with new abilities. But there's a bit of a catch, you'll have to deal with the zanpakuto's personality. Mine here's a rough sort, she only wants to be used against stronger opponents than myself, or when I'm up against a lot of them. I release her any other time she gets upset and shocks me", shocks him...? Well, it was a lightning zanpakuto so maybe it caused a lightning strike the next time he released it.

"Anyway, don't worry too much about it. I doubt any of you are gonna achieve it so soon, so best work on fundamentals alright?" He stood back up and turned over to the entrance, where there were a few benches and a bunker. He saw Shouko over there with the other girls minus Enishi, and judging by the bright array he could see, Nina was back in town. Well, that was good timing.

"Alright, I think we're gonna take a lunch break then get back out here again. Darius I'll show it to you after we all get something to eat. You brought something though didn't you? Bring it all down here. And you Mitsuaki... Tell me about the hollow you met later, Hollows come in many varieties so it'd be good to hear about what you encountered", and with that he headed off over to greet Shouko and Nina.

Shouko brought her sleeve to her mouth, covering it a little in thought. Sara changing her mind, and wishing to do more with her zanpakuto was certainly a choice she wasn't expecting. Playing to her skills she said... Well if there was any skill she was good at, it was her Hoho techniques, which seemed to come rather naturally to her.

"Well, I can teach Hoho techniques too, though my style of them differ from what Ouga teaches, which is more orthodox and commonly used in Soul Society. If that is what you mean then I can help you here too... Of course, tutelage on Kido is always available", she suggested to her. Before Sara would be able to decide however, Nina would appear, Shouko and Nina would exchange a greeting, "it is good to see you Nina. How was your tour?" She was a fan of her work, but sadly she would not be able to attend a lot of her performances outside of this small town. After some silent pleasantries, Ouga and the boys plus Enishi would show up.

Midday - Lunchtime

The group would settle into lunchtime. There were benches where everyone could sit, and turns out food can be made for spirit forms too, or you could return to your body to eat the burritos Darius had brought over. Either way, they had options... Once everyone had figured out a place to sit, a meal to eat, and maybe even a drink, Ouga decided they'd introduce Nina.

"Ah right right everyone I guess you're all wondering who the bright haired lady is here, she's Nina. Another substitute Shinigami. She'd been out of town until today due to her music career. Alright, say hi to everyone Nina, then I'll catch you up on what's been goin' on while we eat."

Bakuto and Tony's straightforward attacks alongside Darius' burst of aggression were filled with a sort of resentment from the night before. Bakuto's confidence and gung-ho attitude flying true in his quick yet unrefined attack, while Tony's resolve was beginning to form. Darius who normally took a defensive stance began to realize he had to put a foot in himself too. Enishi using binding from afar, and Mitsuaki making the best of his wounded state to try and slip into a blind spot. Sara was nowhere to be seen, but Ouga was already told by Shouko that she would be caring for her.

So, how did these five measure up? How does this assault work out for them?

Bakuto's flying thrust was evaded rather seamlessly as Ouga shifted to the side. An ordinary sparring partner would be hyper focused on Bakuto's quick yet clumsy attack and be blindsided by the incoming wall that was Darius, however Ouga immediately thrust his bokken into the ground, letting it stand as he now had both hands free, reiatsu pouring out of his hands as he delivered a powerful double palm strike against Darius' shield, sending him hurtling into the mid-flight Bakuto. "Pass, fail", he yelled out. Not moments after, Tony would come in swinging, with a back handed grip Ouga picked up his sealed wooden zanpakuto and swung up to meet Tony's strike before delivering a swift kick. It was firm, strong, maybe it broke a rib or two from the feeling, but he knew the man could strike harder than that. Nevertheless he went hurtling back, "pass". And just as quickly he throw his bokken right at Enishi, even if her binding kido landed, her concentration would be broken by the swift bokken to the face, "fail". Ouga then turned quickly while moving, slipping right past Mitsuaki's strike and palming the flat side, then about to deliver a body blow which would have been exceptionally painful due to Mitsuaki's wound from last night, he stopped, simply smacking him on the forehead, "pass". He may be rough but he was not heartless.

Ouga straightened up and walked over to pick up his bokken as everyone who attacked at once, and dispatched in mere moments would be recovering. "I'll admit, more than I expected. When I said try to kill me, I really meant it. Darius, take the opportunity to land a blow on me. Against a stronger opponent, you can't just expect to outlast them. Enishi, binding will only go so far on it's own, even with a team. If you wanna keep doing Kido, I suggest you turn around and talk to Shouko. The rest of you I'm impressed", so what was the importance of this lesson one might wonder...? Well, it had to do a little with what he mentioned about Darius. Strong opponents. That's something they had to deal with.

"If you wield the blade, then a battle can be decided in mere moments, even the strong will kneel to the weak in a moment of carelessness. By having the will, courage, and killing intent to seek that moment out, you can fell even the strongest of opponents. That's what we're going to be training today. A killing technique. Doesn't matter if you failed or pass, if you failed then we'll put more work in, and if you passed, we just refine what you have until you have something".

When Sara approached Shouko with this inquiry, she pursed her lips in thought... Truly, it was possible for shinigami to hear the voices of their zanpakuto quickly and rather soon, but it was exceedingly rare. Most zanpakuto had contrasting personalities to their own wielders, as a means to challenge them to become stronger. Well, the relationship of zanpakuto to shinigami is varied, nuanced, and full of odd exceptions. In fact some of the Commissioners and even the Commissioner of her own commission was incredibly exceptional.

But what to say? As she looked at Sara who seemed to be a little unsure, all while not being aware of Shikai... Well, if she was at the park she would have seen a Shikai for the first time. Then again as she thought about it a little more, the knowledge of it would not affect the release all too much. If a Shinigami was destined to achieve it, then they will. That was a firm belief all Shinigami held. All the more reason was Sara's increased attachment to her zanpakuto.

"I see... From the sounds of it, that might have been the spirit of your zanpakuto", the information should be quite surprising. No one here but Ouga and Shouko herself knew about them, not yet at least. She imagined someone might ask Ouga eventually too.

"Well, I cannot say what you must do... Every zanpakuto spirit acts differently to their shinigami, their wielder. Some are cryptic, to test and challenge them, others are hateful and deterrent, forcing conflict... I only suggest that you listen and ascertain the relationship your zanpakuto has with you, and act accordingly. If it has helped you, then perhaps your zanpakuto's spirit is a kind one", Shouko softly sighed a little, pressing her forehead. A kind zanpakuto huh? She wished hers was so, but instead it was an unruly spirit that sought to dance every night, 'until death' even. It was fitting for what it was, but it was always a pain to deal with.

Nina's action hero preparing for a breach antics were not unnoticed, in fact, Emi who had been sitting in the far back was sort of noticing the shuffling happening from outside. Normally, she would call out, but after seeing a glimpse of that bright hair Emi had an idea who it was. She sighed, grabbed an umaibo packet from the shelf, a long, cylindrical Japanese baked sweet, and wound her arm up like a baseball player. As soon as Nina turned the corner to rush the front of the shop she would be immediately met with this sweet right to the face, landing square in her mouth.

"Welcome back Nina, if you want to tell Ouga and Shouko you're back I'll show you to the training ground", the two had only met once before, and this was because Nina needed a mod soul candy drop custom made that was also a mute. It turns out every other mod soul kind of freaked out when they were unable to talk. Though with all that said, she would show Nina to the downstairs as she'd said, as soon as she was ready.

As the Jester began to start winding up his move, Reuel already had Nyx out, spinning it and doing tricks with it as he watched. The curved balisong twirling in his fingers, sheathing, unsheathing, spinning and small throws before being caught again. Well, that magic seemed familiar, Reuel thought to himself, what's the story behind that? Whatever it was, if it was the same magic he couldn't let it reach him cleanly, and so as the balloon animals flew at him he made his move.

Transitioning cleanly into rollover putting the blade out, he did a couple quick and dirty swings, sending out inky dark blades that sliced right through them. The negating properties of his magic cutting through it like butter, and dampening their effects at the same time. This ploy was common, throw a few projectiles and then appear in melee range and so he did a twirl, before moving to the side, anticipating the Jester's appearance, executing a Shadow Step to hide his movement as he slipped away.

Upon affirming Jester's position, he would deliver a swift couple slashes, inky blades would follow them too, extending his reach, and their dangerous nature making any magical defense less effective or ineffectual. If the Jester wanted to get close to him to fight, it might be his last mistake.

As the exchange finished, Reuel getting pretty comfortable right now, his smile turned into a frown as he heard a familiar voice. It was Jericho with an announcement.

"FENIX TEAR!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!? I SMELL TOO MANY ENEMIES OUT THERE AND WE HAVE A GIANT TOWER TO DEAL WITH. I JUST SLAYED AN ANGEL IN TWO ATTACKS! ARE YOU GOING TO LET ME TAKE ALL OF THE TRASH OUT AND GAIN ALL OF THE GLORY MYSELF? WE'RE A FAMILY THAT SHARES THE BURDEN OF CHORES! YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO FINISH CLEANING AND JOIN UP WITH IFRIT, KAIGA, AND I TO ADD ANOTHER DEMON TO OUR BELT!"

He turned back to the Jester, "and here I thought I'd get to have some fun... Oh well. Seems I'll have to finish this right now". It was a bold proclamation, and perhaps one Jester most likely will not take kindly to. However, Reuel was a man of his word, yet he did not want to unleash such power so soon, especially since he felt prying eyes from somewhere, but with his focus on Jester he knew not where. He'll have to be careful how he chooses to close this out, and it all depended on the Jester's next move.

@Nyahahameha So the strings on the zanpakuto will just be improvised for now. We had agreed they'll be more realized once she has obtained her Shikai.

Otherwise all details look good. If possible though for backstory I'd like it if you could form that into a proper multi-paragraph passage. If you can do this for some other sections too that'd be nice.

You are allowed to add it to character section in the current state with just an adjustment to the current zanpakuto description, so don't worry about that aspect.

@Nyahahameha Yeah I didn't notice, I'll review this soon but that sounds like a good idea. We're at the point where everyone will be obtaining their Shikai at sporadic points of the ongoing arc. Maybe even not release it until Soul Society. I'll also send you the Shikai sheet in DM too, and we'll continue that there.

@Nyahahameha Kido without incantations is just weaker, not more difficult.

I think in your character's case, they'll probably use Kido without incantations at first, but then develop a string instrument to replace incantations with something to get them more oomph. I just suggested that since that sort of gimmick sounds like a release already, but I suppose it's not too different from having ointment stored inside of the handle of your zanpakuto.

Given where we are in the story, this is a ripe opportunity for your character to develop this sort of gimmick.

We haven't been suuuuper consistent with that rule too, but it will probably start mattering soon enough.
