I've only played 3. My mother did play the first two and she enjoyed them.

Awe good memories of 3. Back then I made a fanfic of my character Commando and Amata. Because I wanted to really get with her <~< good times.

I do not know about 4, but from my experience with 3, you don't really need to play the previous games to play it. There may be references, but they seem mostly to be their own little story arcs in the same setting..

I found 3 fun and enjoyable ^^
