Male, 33 years old. (I'm even more dead than before.)
Likes (other than writing and roleplaying): I'm into all genres of music. I love to cook. I love the outdoors, and walking through the park near my house. (Yes, really.) I read a lot of thriller/mystery novels. And I usually watch seasonal anime. (Or cooking shows. Because Western Media provides even fewer things that are worth watching.)
But as for my many other neglected hobbies, I've played basically every sport. (Soccer and Bowling being my favorite of the bunch.) And I'm trying to play more video games. (Going through my never-ending Steam library.) Plus, I've dabbled in making electronic & metal music, and I used to play a number of instruments. (Guitar, French Horn, etc.)
@Exit Well to be fair, I believe the time was/is specified to be EST or something like that. So it still relies on the participants to follow a schedule, even if it gives them a slight challenge because they're on different time zones.
@Vocab Stuff happens. It's my fault alone that I didn't finish mine, though I never choose to be sick the whole time. Not everyone, helk more than likely very few people, actually care about the specific rules anyway. If it's a good story in that person's opinion, I'm sure it will win out in the end. Rules usually have to be consistently followed for them to really have any weight. So it's just really an esoteric gripe.
My opinion of these have changed fairly dramatically over the years. Used to enjoy them just as much as the roleplaying process, like the starting piece of the writing puzzle. Now I consider them more as a necessary evil. There's so many nagging things I could rant about revolving around character sheet things I've seen only on this forum that have completely ruined them for me. I'm almost unsure if it has anything to do with the original concept. Password codes buried in between character sheet code that nobody follows. Overly long and elaborate sheets that are also too vague to easily parse. People using sheets in petty/malicious ways to judge someone's writing that they so obviously ignore for others. Overly long and boring sheets that the creator doesn't even follow in the roleplay. I could go on forever. But, even after all of it...a GM still most certainly needs them to effectively do their job.
Faceclaims?
I have less concerns for this one. Whatever suits the roleplay in question is fine. Personal tastes usually triumphs here, though it helps for everybody to have consistent looking art. If everyone else is using an anime avatar, just bite the bullet and remove the CW actor off your sheet. Vice versa. But I rarely see people complaining about inappropriate face claims, which certainly makes it a more enjoyable process all around for everyone.
Color codes?
I'll admit this is something (and possibly one of the very few positive) original concepts I've only seen this forum partake in. I don't think there's ever a necessity to use this. I also understand people that can't stand them, or dislike it aesthetically since it's unlike traditional writing. But forum writing has more opportunities for aesthetically changes than traditional writing doesn't have. So I think it's totally harmless and maybe it makes writing more interesting for younger writers, in the same way they'd prefer pictures in stories. As one example of how it can be effectively used.
What's the 'right amount' of images?
Depends on the complexity of the sheet, or the aesthetic choices of the roleplay. A picture is a thousand words, and frankly I'd rather have an image than a pedantically detailed description that will still likely fail to appeal in the same way a picture/image can. If we're describing specifically for a character sheet, one tends to be sufficient enough. (It's often difficult to find more than one that's consistent in its art.)
Freeform or GM provided code?
I think the only time freeform character sheets could work is 1x1 roleplaying. It's just putting too much pressure on players just starting up to just make them assume what information you need to provide for the character. If you complain that it's too much, or not enough, than you've failed even harder than the people that make poorly defined character sheets. People here waste too much time on the character sheets and than never actually post in the roleplay. I can't imagine giving somebody here the freedom to dilly-dally on a bunch of unneeded extra information, nobody will need for the zero payoff it will provide to anyone else in the campaign. Just make the sheet clear and concise, and have players follow those guidelines...
Things that should be be included/excluded?
Don't add rules for character sheets you personally don't follow or let others break because you like them more. It's in very poor taste. But if we're strictly discussing character creation, the only thing that needs to be added is what's relevant/plot related information. But people that enjoy character sheets will always add more than that. I won't begrudge them for that alone.
Something that people need to absolutely start doing more of, because so many roleplays could be spared the 'that one guy's hiatus killed everything' syndrome, is putting meta information in the character sheet. At the bottom, put something like (Character Control:) and @mention a player in the roleplay that you'd allow them to write something for your character in an event of an emergency or crippling laziness. (I mean 'having a life'.)
I mean in other forums it tended to just be ret-conned, or dealt with by the GM themselves, but it was never this persistent, frequent or late in RP's cycle. But the beginning/starting process for many RP's here are so stretched out that it would just be a useful cautionary measure, that probably would have done several roleplays some good.
What is your character creation process? Is character creation just all together overrated?
I sort of loathe the creation process nowadays, because it feels like it's making a character static when like in most writing they're suppose to progress and change. So if my character goes through an arc that changes them, needing to also change the CS to reflect that makes the process feel even more tedious and a waste of everyone's time. I also don't even think it shows someone's writing or roleplaying ability very well either, which it's often used for here. It could possibly be an effective first impression of the characters in the roleplay, but some people I've learned don't read people's CS's...so that's also kind of out of the bag. As for overrated? I don't think that would be the right word. I'm not sure how fond the majority is of creating character sheets. Necessary? Probably, in most cases.
I'll be reading and submitting reviews for all entries eventually. Though I'm pretty sure two of those were posted past the deadline...(not that rule bending hasn't been allowed and won in the past.) I guess I'll feel a little rigged that one of the problems I had of worrying I wouldn't meet deadline would be proven moot, as the one that had a character limit that was broken with abandon, and more than likely won because of it. So while I'll still read them, and point of my favorites. I don't think I can personally/in good conscious, vote for something that didn't follow the rules set before it.
I believe I shared a few of my worst stories here already?
Oh dear...I have a lot of stories that are almost impossible to describe how bad they really were without getting so long, no one sane would read it...
And oddly enough, I have an example where everyone was a good writer but damn we just made a fucking train wreck of a story...it was kind of everyone's fault in a way. It was a slice of life plot-line, basically a super natural creature inherited a huge mansion of sorts and decided to invited a bunch of them to move in with her and split the rent, so she could make friends and keep her home. Sounds fairly straightforward...however that somehow turned into a more disturbing version of twilight? With possibly more hateable and stupid characters?
It's almost turned infamous joke of me and my roommate, who I tortured and read it too over the phone, because he asked. :D
In short, this story became a girl (Grace).
(She spent days in the rain crying in an random alleyway because her uncle wouldn't "love" her. And she also just laid down in a field crying while her house and friends were being attacked and killed. My point being, she might have actually been a bigger nuisance than Bella in the twilight movies. <.<)
That had a werewolf and vampire that constantly was with her, the werewolf tried to protect her and treat her right and the vampire attempted to kill her several times and use her for his own gain. Do you even have to ask who she choose? This vampire was also her, way older, uncle...<.<
And when the villains appeared, having one very stupid main goal (that really didn't make much sense) and one with the power to control dragons. So the only not awful person in the RP, the werewolf, who is raising a dragon child. Almost every time he's faced with the villain, what does he do? Bring the dragon with him...which literally always goes wrong. And there's just so many more stupid things that happened, it would last forever with everything I could bring up... I'd say all of it was intentional in some way...but I don't think any of it was. -.-
Ironically, had the exact same people in other RP's that went perfectly fine. I guess even good role-players can just straight up, lose the plot and their minds and write a love story, that could possibly be worse than Twilight.
I'll start in sharing two quick particular experiences. Both with my roommate and his cousin, bless their souls, but they had a plethora of fail moments. So here's two of them with some simple context.
First, the roleplay was just the three of us. Each of us controlled three demi-gods that were shaping a new world. Backstory isn't important. The purpose was a battle/action roleplay where we would fight one another. Both of them we're itching to fight as soon as possible. So very early on, I described one of my gods wandering in a completely barren and dry desert oasis in scorching heat of daylight to scope out the area. My roommate really wanted to fight me, his three gods had the general powers of Light, Earth and Water. Do I even need to tell you which one sent given the topic at hand?
He sent his water god and challenged me to a fight to the death. Apparently, he missed the whole 'completely dry and barren' part (and the desert part). Which his exasperated screams over the phone, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT A WATERY OASIS?" made it all the more hilarious. It was a miracle that that demi-god made it out alive. A moment I'll never let go. Wasn't even the last lopsided battle in that RP. (Pro-Tip, don't write you expose your only obvious weak point to launch a powerful attack, if your opponent is in easily range of it. Also, don't join a battle RP and expect no death.)
So the second one is also quite early into the story and happens to be his cousin's fault this time, we had a six person party. A simple D&D style quest adventure, everyone had just entered the small town that was about to get attacked by a group of bandits. So the group gathered in the middle of the town where they started causing trouble. So, the cousin's character who was a warlock decided to start the battle by threatening and instilling fear into them. He changed his ordinary human appearance, into something more demonic looking. One bandit cried out that he was a monster. He loudly called back in a unnatural voice. "I'm not a monster, I'm a devil!" He proceeded to laugh manically. Ah, teenagers and their writing. Good times...
The problem with this, is one of the other character's entire backstory is based on demons slaughtering his people. He also was a barbarian and mercenary paid to kill demons, and a stranger whom he hasn't met yet started calling out in the middle of the town. "Mwhahaha, I'm a devil." casting fire spells. So, it lead with a bastard sword impaling that character. His cousin was not pleased with this action. But basically everyone else laughed their asses off. Maybe not the best way to introduce yourself. Edge writing, on top of being embarrassing to read often leads to embarrassing results. Sometimes, a quick and instant death...
I've had my share of cringe inducing roleplays in my time, but most of them have sort of faded from my mind. (Like even from a year ago, I feel I'd probably recall more intricate details about them.) I actually have more memories of my own fiction, which I'm sure if I could somehow get back I'd greatly enjoy laughing at it. There's a lot of stuff I've created that I'd love to have, that's been unfortunately lost along with most things connected with my past.
I love Jesus. His name has five (5) letters in it.
Jesus loves you too. ;D
I was ambidextrous in my childhood, and despite my right hand often proving to be more/equally efficient in tests I've taken. I still ended up favoring my left hand...
