Cal has always been the heart and soul of his surroundings. When he was a child he found a way to laugh with the simplest of toys, a way to turn the smallest of events into the grandest of stories. He was imaginative and superbly friendly, a child who's personality shone through and made his parents and their friends ooze with delight about the little comedian in the family.
In high school, Cal found his niche with the artists of the school, writing for the school paper and submitting his own creative musings to the papers artist's corner. He was always rather popular around school, known as the class clown, as well as the kid to go to when you were feeling down. He was a friend to all, an enemy to none, and he liked it that way.
The the upper middle class suburbanite community that his family belonged to was charmed by Cal. The McDaniel's little writer was a charmer, that much was for certain. Adults thought he was a responsible young man, with good morals and a bright future, and the youth of the community thought of him as a fun loving adventurer, and the best babysitter around. Cal was always in high demand around the neighborhood, something his parents always praised him for.
After joining the Coalition and being thrust into the spotlight, Cal's high energy and confident attitude brought him plenty of admirers, and he became a well known public figure. He seems to appeal most to the youth of the city, which makes a good deal of sense, seeing as how he is the youngest member of the team. However, there are a few older citizens who see Cal as reckless, and view him as a child who's stumbled in way over his head, rather than a powerful hero who's more than earned his spot at the table.

A B I L I T I E S
Cal finds that his powers are best suited to close up or mid range combat. While he has a few ranged abilities, his most hard hitting abilities are the ones that he can only execute when he's getting up close and personal. There's the added bonus of Cal getting much more of a thrill from being up in the thick of it.
🌑 Darkness Manipulation: By far Cal's strongest and most well known ability, Cal is able to shape, control and summon darkness, using it for the purpose of shielding himself and his allies or to inflict damage upon his enemies. You'll often see Cal using this ability to form tendrils of shadow that extend from his body, and using them to attack his adversaries.
🌑 Dark Mist: Cal has mastered the technique of dissipating into shadow, becoming a mist of sorts that allows him to move through tight spaces and avoid attacks. This being his weakest ability, he can't stay in this form for much longer than a minute, and even that strains him.
🌑 Night Vision: The darkness is as much Cal's ally as the rest of the Coalition is, and he finds that it rarely inhibits him. Cal is able to see through the darkness, nearly as well as he can see in the light.
🌑 Shadow Walking: When in the shadows, Cal can teleport from one shadow to a nearby one, making him difficult to pin down. His whole body must be shrouded in darkness for him to teleport, or else he risks losing a limb.

In combat, Cal is graceful and agile, moving around constantly, rarely giving his opponent a chance to get a hit in. Where as in his normal life he can be unfocused and erratic, in combat his adversaries have the unfortunate gift of his undivided attention. He becomes almost a different person when he's fighting, rarely letting up until the fight is won. While his thin frame would indicate a physical weakness, Cal hit's just as hard as the rest of his team, maybe even harder at times, when he knows he's being underestimated.

Cal is taller than your average guy, standing at about 6'0 ft, with a slim frame, the build of a runner. Shaggy, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes give him a conventionally attractive look, though he'll never believe you if you comment on his appearance. His mouth seems to always be upturned in an ever present smirk, one that makes him look much younger than his nineteen years.
When out on a mission, Cal is fitted in a black, reinforced bodysuit, one that won't necessarily stop a bullet in it's tracks, but it'll sure as shit slow it down, with the added bonus of keeping Cal light on his feet. Combat boots are a staple, as are a black mask that covers his eyes, nose, and cheeks, wrapping around to protect some of the jaw.
In his everyday life, Cal dresses more or less like one of those artsy fartsy kids that hang out at museums and talk about the deep meaning behind John Green. Large rounded glasses and anorak jackets, baseball hats with strange slogans on them like "Heck" or "Film's Not Dead", black, ratty, high top Converse, and jeans that are rolled up at the cuff. Hipstery, would be the unscientific term, which is suiting since there isn't much about Cal that is scientific.
P E R S O N A L I T Y T R A I T S
🌑 Friendly: Cal is certainly one of the most genuine people you could meet. He's open and warm, and has no issue socializing with most people. It's not uncommon for Cal to go out of his way to say hi or brighten someone's day.
🌑 Naive: While being optimistic isn't necessarily a bad thing, Cal can take it to the next level at times. He's trusting to a fault, and often fails to see through the disguises of others. His insistence to see the good in everyone is admirable at times, but he would be lying if he denied that he saw the world through rose tinted lenses, a trait that may get him in trouble later on.
🌑 Confident: Cal knows the extent of his powers and he knows how skilled he is, and this is often evident in the way he holds himself. He isn't one to stand back and keep quiet, he voices his opinion and rarely doubts his own abilities. Not to say he is arrogant, he's just confident in what he can do.
🌑 Stubborn: Cal doesn't back down easily, and anyone who's ever been in an argument with him will attest to that. It will often take a good deal of convincing for him to realize that his way may not be the best, or to admit that he was wrong, though this works in the opposite way. Once he's behind you, he's your ally for life, so long as he can continue to trust you. It's this loyalty, both to himself and his allies, that makes him such a good partner
