@Imperfectionist Something like that. It's more of "branch theory"; all magic is descended from one of 5 sources or "Aeon's". The further from the source the less potent the magic.

Said sources: Creation Aeon, Existence Aeon, Void Aeon, Destruction Aeon, Time Aeon. The closer to an Aeon, the simpler - and more powerful - the magic becomes.

I use this system to allow for flexibility while still keeping a system of sorts.
