A B I L I T I E S Luck Manipulation - Nate has always had a penchant for luck, be it calling a coin toss or getting the cards he needs in a game of chance. A bus or train always seems to wait just long enough for him to catch it. He does seem to be somewhat capable of making those around him luckier if he wants... or have their luck dry up if they get on his bad side. Nocikinesis - Nate has always had a higher pain tolerance, mostly because he is able to suppress it supernaturally. He doesn't seem to consciously control this... nor does he seem to consciously make the harm he causes sting even more. Curses and Blessings - Curses and Blessings are a complicated affair. Sickness and malaise are about as bad as curses go for Nate, while blessings have the inverse effect of letting people bounce back quickly from sickness or injury. Curses and Blessings, however, can also allow Nate to extend the effects of his luck manipulation. The process for cursing or blessing is rigid: he needs to write down the person's full name down on a hard surface, bury it a foot underground (or drop it down a well), and give an offering to Nemesis while making his intentions known. Temporary Possession - A minor curse given to him for his initial refusal to go to Camp Athens, Nathaniel is receptive to being controlled/manipulated by other supernatural forces, so long as they believe they are particularly righteous in their goals. What qualifies as "righteous" is unclear... does the person simply need to truly believe manipulating Nate outweighs the cost of autonomy, or do they need to be serving the goals of the gods?
S T R E N G T H S Negotiator - For a child of Nemesis, Nate seems to lack the expected conniving and scheming tendencies. He wears his heart on his sleeve, for better or worse, and is usually quick to try and defuse tension between third parties. Scrappy - Nate isn't exactly itching to start a fight, but he is certainly ready to end one if needed (or, more accurately, outlast one) when negotiations fail. Of course, he is more familiar with hand to hand scraps than "classical" warfare. Dealer's Choice - Nate grew up in Vegas, and over the years has picked up knowledge on the meta for nearly every game of chance there is from people of all walks of life. He has excellent hand-eye coordination, and knows a bit of sleight of hand.
W E A K N E S S E S Headstrong - Nate doesn't know when to quit when it comes to doing what he thinks is "right." Even if it gets him into a whole heap of trouble or ends up making things even worse. Reckless - Given his tremendous bouts of good luck, Nate has always perceived risk-reward scenarios as guaranteed risks... but when surrounded by others with divine influence, his luck is not as boundless. He can never turn down a game of chance, when offered. Gullible - Nate understands, in the grand-scheme of things, that people lie. Nate has always preferred to play the cards rather than play the people at a table, and ignored a fundamental skill in life. He has always had a hard time knowing when he's being used until he's already in too deep.

H I S T O R Y Nathaniel Banes grew up as an only child in Las Vegas, Nevada. As the story often goes, he didn't know much of his mother. His father only cryptically mentioned that he met her while deployed overseas, and that Nate was born shortly after he got back home. Nate's father never talked about what exactly he went through in the army, nor why he was suddenly discharged and ended up working in low-end casinos off the Strip.
Until Nathaniel was 8, he and his father lived a quiet existence. His father would work afternoons and nights, and he would often be in the care of babysitters. But they shared a love for games of all sorts, though his father's poison was always poker. By middle school, Nathaniel would get in trouble every few months for gambling at lunch, but little came in terms of punishment. He was often just forced to return whatever he had won. By high school, everyone knew better than to gamble with the kid who seemed blessed by lady luck herself.
Nate was nevertheless quick to make and lose friends constantly, bouncing between social circles. He was athletic, charming, and just being around him seemed to bring a string of good luck. Of course, he also was quick to call folks out for their dishonesty or crappy behavior. Mix in teenage recklessness and hormones, and Nate ended up in trouble constantly for his involvement in fights. He always claimed to never start them, but that mattered little to administrators or his father. He ended up bouncing between a few schools, and just barely graduated from his last school.
After graduation, Nate picked up part time work where he could (mostly at gas stations or fast food joints). Of course, his passion was obviously for gambling. So, he started going to smaller casinos off the Vegas strip. He somehow managed to get away with not having to show ID, and made the majority of his living off rotating between various casinos, winning more than he lost. And for the longest time, he managed to avoid detection.
Of course, then came the day he lost… badly. The dealer had a sickly sweet smile plastered on her face, her long red hair draped around her. Her eyes seemed trained on him. The other players seemed to grow tired of their own bad luck, but Nate was transfixed. He wasn’t expecting to find his mother in a run-down casino in Reno, nor was he exactly ready to hear what it was she had to say. She spoke of gods and monsters and responsibilities and a camp and war. Nate walked away, banking on it all just being the insane ramblings of a stranger.
But he never stopped losing. His bus would always run late or too early, the slots were taking far more than they were giving, and he would see flashes of that same sickly sweet smile in his nightmares. His father corroborated his mother's story, and their relationship has been rocky since. The last year has been a reality check, with Nate’s eyes slowly being opened to a world bigger and more dangerous than he had ever known. And in that time, he has begun to understand that despite his insistence on being independent, all roads lead to a little camp called Athens.
He isn’t on board with whatever the gods, especially Nemesis, want from him. But he is due for some luck, and hopefully going to camp will help with that.
