You prepare in anticipation for as long as you think it should last. Its his duty as a father to make sure his children are well-fed and taken care of, both physically and mentally. Granted, if it were a year long winter, that would be more difficult. However, on most planets ive been on that host muptiple seasons, winter lasts aproxximately 3-5 months. Frozen beef lasts just about as long. Stock up on enough to ration throughout the time.

The reality of the matter... from the prospective I have based on what info I have on it, is that survival comes before trivial things. You cant afford to cater to trivial things if you dont have what ypu need to live. However... regardless of survival, there are consequences to each and every action. So in a way, though the father may have saved the son's life by providing the food, the son doesnt necessarily have to forgive the father for killing his friend. Life is... a very complicated and difficult beast to master... I'd venture to say no one has.

Because survival is more important. Even if the son wanted to keep his friend, even if he's angry, he still ate with the rest of the family because it was his only way to survive. When life is on the line, nothing else matters.

That's really the main theme of the book. If you choose to pursue "perfect" over "good enough," you may very well lose it all.

About a third, now. One of his children befriended a wolf, but he just had to kill it so they'd be able to eat.
