Saga of Astrid - Year 3 Day 166

With the birth of Sigmund and Sif, it felt like Astrid was concerned with more social problems. She gave order to Vilkas's domain and though she tried her hand at individual taxation, she quickly realized she did not have the manpower required to set up such a massive endeavor, neither the people trained in accounting to do so nor the armed guards to protect these accountants from getting murdered by the first farmer they tried to tax. She could not tax people, but she could tax villages and ships. Vilkas was more than happy to help her set this up and make his vassals understand it was in their best interest to collect these taxes, or else.

Money thus flowed into the treasury with a very important side benefit: Money actually began to flow, period. Astrid insisted that all taxes be paid in coins, coins that she also happened to mint! That way the economy was slowly becoming more liquid, less based on barter which in turn would make more taxation efforts easier and also gave her and Vilkas significantly more control over the economic activities of Sardinia.

A lot of that money went back into Vilkas's military ambitions of course, he couldn't get enough of imported Cretan iron weapons that were so much better than bronze, but there was still a lot left for what would be Astrid's most ambitious project thus far.

Saga of Astrid - Year 4 Day 254

Great projects often come with great challenges to overcome. Oh she had already overcome plenty of those, but the main problem were the unforeseen problems that kept arising from that project of Astrid's.

But what was that project?

Phase 1 was a watermill. The village had the perfect stream going through it, she went a bit up the river to find a passage narrow enough with a water speed high enough to install a wheel, then another, then a third. Those waterwheels alone were massive tools for human productivity and allowed grain to be milled at lightning speed in comparison to the archaic muscle powered ways of before, but this was not what this was meant for, not by a long shot.

Phase 2 was the crusher. A weight would be raised by a bucket of water, that would spill over and empty when it came at a certain level, causing the weight to fall down and crush rocks, rinse and repeat. But not just any rock: Copper oxide ore, the kind with a copper concentration so low huge piles of it as mining refuse just laid around the local mine.

Phase 3 was the acid bath. Sulfur, or brimstone as some called it, was actually decently abundant and did not have many use at this time, though Astrid being a chemist knew it as one of the building blocks of modern industry. It was imported for cheap from Sicily and mixed with water made a noxious smelling acid that dissolved the copper oxide in the ore. There she had met her first problem, acid bathes made of... of what? Copper that gets dissolved? Bronze that was also made of copper? No one knew how to work iron so she had to order bowls made of extremely heavy stone to soak the ore to leech the copper out of it and move the sludge to another bowl to extract impurities and finally be left with a copper concentrate of sort.

Phase 4 was the main roadblock. Normally she'd use Electrowinning to strip the copper ions from the sludge with an electric current... but that was not going to happen. So she had to use more crude methods. Centrifugal force with the water wheels, boiling the sludge, steps after steps to remove impurities.

In the end, she turned what was seen as a waste product into a source of high quality copper, producing more than the entire island would ever know what to do with!

But this was not the only thing she produced. Astrid pretty much created the first toxic wastes in human history and as the chemicals ran off her mill and into the river that went through the town down bellow, people started to get sick, as did the workers of the mills who gained strange new afflictions from breathing the fumes of Astrid's chemicals. She knew those things, she knew how to prevent them too, but it was such a complex affair to make others understand. The water smelled bad, but to climb up the hill to get water before it entered the mill? It was such a bother! And likewise Astrid had to get Vilkas to go as far as to threaten to whip the workers of the mill for them to finally wear the leather protections and follow a strict rotation in and out of the building to prevent the fumes from dizzying them.

As Astrid was doing her best to design some kind of aqueduct to bring clean water to the town so people stopped drinking from the river she was now poisoning, Astrid was seeing the limits of what she could do alone. She needed iron. Cast iron buckets what could handle hellish levels of heat, that despite their weight would still be more mobile than stone.

Luckily, she had heard of a master smith who knew how to forge iron living east, in Crete.

@TruckKun

Hail to you, master smith.

Tales of your work have traveled far and wide, reaching my home of Sardinia. I am in need of a smith that knows how to work iron better than anyone in the world. I will pay handsomely to have your services and am willing to build you a forge the likes of which have never been seen before if you would agree to spend five years teaching your skills in Sardinia.

Attached are some designs I hope you might be able to make.

The very corporate terms of the letter would make someone suspicious of its modern overtone, but what comes with it is what makes it a dead giveaway that someone from modern times wrote it. The drawings are rough, but definitely made in the style of a blueprint, with front and side images and measurements in centimeters and meters, with a wooden ruler sent for reference. The images themselves show buckets, screws and other industrial implements.

TL;DR
-Astrid begins basic taxation of villages and shipping to and from the island.
-Astrid builds a watermill and experiments with Hydro-chemical metallurgy, but also creates the first toxic wastes in history that poison the local river.
-To further her goals, she sends a letter inviting a legendary master of iron smiting to her island.
And there we go. All of these things happening at different times of course, I hope you guys will enjoy!
The Indomitus - Bridge

The captain was looking at the data streaming in. With her job mostly done now, she reflected on the... discrepancies she had been witness to. Norton getting killed by some of his own men, who then made sure not to be taken alive. That kind of fanaticism she had seen only in 2 places in this sector and she believed it had to be a Republican plot. 'Liberty or death' and all that... but there was another place she saw that, when she was much younger: The Cult of Lethos. She couldn't believe this perverted old man could have extended his influence outside of his backwater planet, but it had been a while since she had left the sector and the end of the Piracy wars had significantly changed the political layout of the sector.

But no matter. Discreetly she looked at her own personal communication slate.

'You still like jewelry? -T.'

She glanced up to look at one of the dozens of displays around the bridge, eying one where Tarsis was supervising the loading of 'tactically acquired items' into the shuttle. They might work for the empire, but among her 'auxiliaries' Mika still maintained an under the table 'bonus structure' so to speak. Officially, captain got 5 shares, lieutenant 3 and enlisted 1, so they divided the shares by the total and then spread them out. In truth the spread was more like 10-4-1 with only Tarsis and the quarter master being in the know of course, with Mika heavily favoring paying her crew in drugs and other recreative items that would be hard to fence for a mark-up on top so she made infinitely more money than her goons, but they were pirates after all.

'Got something cute? -M.'

She answered. It was an innocent conversation enough, but she knew the imperials could read all of her mail so she kept things cryptic, simple and deniable as much as she could. As she considered her share of the spoil, Mika didn't feel the gaze of the Prince on her back.

The Indomitus - Debriefing

The moment Prince Cassian entered the room, Baron Wilhelm practically jumped on his feet to do a salute, which he managed to perform before being dismissed. Even then it was with a certain hesitation that he sat back down, looking with a frown at those who had not bothered to get up. Chief among them was captain Ganishka who swung from left to right on her swivel chair with impatience. Then there was also Hierophant Tyche Comstar who had graced the room with her presence and who occupied the seat on the Prince's right, though considering he spiritual status it was much less of an offense than others. She remained straight in her seat, only he cybernetic eyes following the prince as he took his seat.

The trio listened to the items one by one, until came the critique regarding the Baron's own performance. There was no anger on his face, perhaps some annoyance but also supreme confidence as he rose up from his seat to answer.

"With all due respect, at my age I get medical readings outside of acceptable range when I climb stairs! But I've known this body for 103 years now and I know what it can and can't do." His expression softened and he gave a friendly slap on Titus's back. "Our prince has been gifted with an admirably competent Lance, I am afraid that honor compels me to follow the example of my comrades! And anyways-" He sat back down before smiling politely at Lucia. "-our magnanimous prince accepted that I join him in his glorious endeavor on the understanding that I would not fight like an old man." 'And what you are asking me to do, is to fight like an old man.' Wilhelm silently implied.

"Her Beatitude Tyche Comstar wishes to bring a point of order." A semi-robotic voice came as behind the imposing frame of Tyche an acolyte dressed in a red hooded robe with a white stripe with the 3 red Comstar diamonds on his right shoulder going all the way to his feet. He raised a furious finger to point at Hartwig. "While her Beatitude can ignore the contempt this man has for a Lockheed-Raytheon engine like the one on the Guildcrest Venture, his use of boron-carbid alloy tools instead of blessed titanium-steel for the repair of the Comstar reactor of the Percheron, along with records that shows a complete lack of holy canticles being recited during the repairs is unacceptable! Albert Hartwig has also been found to not always use proper procedures during the maintenance of the Indomitus as well, which leads her Beatitude to seriously question the worth of thanking such barely satisfactory methods!"

The voice of the half-cyborg was rising into a screech as he became agitated, until finally Tyche herself raised a hand to interrupt him, commanding his immediate silence as he lowered his head and stepped back. Lowering her long and slender fingers on the table in a theatrical pause, Tyche finally spoke without moving her lips, her voice completely synthetic but also much more soft. "Military practicality may sometimes justify more expeditious methods. But as the empire brings back the Procyon sector into the loving arms of mother Earth, it is important to remember that by right of ancient corporate rites, it is also Comstar holy land. Only when men follow the laws of Earth and machines those of Comstar can prosperity be achieved and the Great Work continue." For the first time, Tyche turned her head to look at the Prince. "The people of this sector are unbelievers and so, to prevent heresy or worst, apostasy, people from my retinue should accompany Albert Hartwig when he interacts with the natives and their machines, so the proper holy methodologies be used."

The words of the Hierophant didn't seem to allow a refusal and weight heavily in the room. Finally it was the Captain that broke the silence as she looked at the Prince and Tyche with a bemused smile. "Uhhh, okay? Putting a pin on this uh, very important point of course, on the subject of the Venture's possible special cargo... why don't we just search the ship? My guys know all the nooks and crannies where something could be hidden, if there's something hidden, we'll find it."

The Indomitus - Aside with Stader Volger

The meeting was moving on, its attendees splitting in smaller groups to talk about the major points that had been brought up and minor ones that weren't relevant to everyone assembled. As she got up to leave, Mika Ganishka quickly found herself face to face with Commander Volger. She looked up to the man with her usual aloof smirk, but something in her body language told the Commander that she was on the defensive. Simply put, Mika had participated and led her fair shares of mutinies, she knew that when the chips came down being a captain didn't mean shit if a Marine decided to give you a power armored fist in the face. She always tried to keep her boarding teams as far away from the bridge as possible for this reason.

"Commander." She answered with a raised eyebrow, seemingly less surprised at the sarcasm as much as a man like Volger actually deign to call her that in the first place.

Listening to his request, Mika looked around a little and seeing the conference room was a bit crowded, nodded her head toward the door, signaling him to follow her outside. Once in the hall, she went to a corner of the small atrium they found themselves in, one where people wouldn't go pass them unless they got out of their way to do so.

"What can I do for you Commander?"

The Indomitus - Captain's Cabin with Sharlin Vande Tanne

"Ah, Sharlin! Please come in."

It was good to be the boss and just command people in and out of her cabin, especially on a ship so massive as the Invictus where this could mean quite a walk. As the automated doors opened, something jumped from the corner of Sharlin's eye to hide underneath a piece of furniture, an alien pet with a feline demeanor but dark blue scales that looked at the spy from the darkness of its hiding place with big slit eyes.

The captain's quarters were the second biggest ones after the Prince's, it seemed that much more smaller due to how overfilled it was with a lifetime of adventure on display all over the place. At the center of it was a luxurious desk made of exotic alien wood complimented by other pieces of furniture of the same wood. Behind the desk on the wall was a huge painting of... something? A battle? It was an impressionist artstyle but one could distinguish two sides of faces that fought with expressions of indescribable furor in tones of blue and red. Off to a more remote corner, there was also a case with a uniform that was certainly not imperial along with a few medals on display.

"There she is! Please, come in, come in. As you might know I'm not big on formalities so please relax. Can I offer you a drink?" The pirate turned captain Mika Ganishka herself saluted Sharlin with a suspiciously wide smile as she entered the room.

The Indomitus - Mess Hall with Aria Dvalin

Being a capital ship of a decent size, the Indomitus had the luxury of a restaurant style Mess Hall for its officers where one could eat with some peace and quiet. That is if some crusty old war hero didn't decide to bother you. "Ah, the Ace to-be herself!" The Baron had come up behind Aria to give her a slap on the back just as she was swallowing her bite and didn't seem to notice any distress he might have caused as he placed his plate down in front of hers. A very light meal, though complimented by about a dozen different pills in a little cup. He sat down in front of her with a jovial smile.

"You so seldom eat with the rest of us Lieutenant! I do hope you're not cross at me for our last sortie?" He said as he generously seasoned his meal with pepper before looking up to Aria for her answer expectantly.
I'm writing a big post rn, I might as well add start this big off as well.
<Snipped quote by Wernher>

Do you want to do that on the ship or after the time skip?

I'd say after the time skip while on the Indomitus, timeline wise before or after the debrief but we'd run in concert for the sake of keeping things moving?

Also, with or without Tarsis present?
Alright, some interactions that I think could be fun?

@Terrans A back and forth about Tarsis/Reaver-1 with the Captain, maybe along with the prince about why to keep or not to keep them around?

@Eisenhorn Tyche boarding the damaged ship to inspect the damages to the drive and berating the mechanic for not following the 'proper protocols' (EG, not using incense and doing a prayer) for his repairs?

@Psyker Landshark The Baron trying to cheer up Aria about her family situation?

@Kensai Captain Mika asking if, while they are planetside, the good spy could do a little job for her?

@Arnorian Titus and the Baron talking shop while training shooting or swordplay?
<Snipped quote by Wernher>

Yev is really just doing some home brewing, minor production, using fallen fruit deemed unsuitable for anything but animal feed. It's not like she has the facilities and contacts to supply the other domes.

<Snipped quote by Wernher>

Rumors have probably brought up that she's a convicted domestic terrorist, so a little distance is expected. And it's hard to ignore the eye or arm so she may have said something curtly about the organ-jacking when asked. As far as the rest, that Lifetime movie was just a hijacking of "the hand that rocks the cradle".

Using fallen fruits meant to feed the animals? I knew it! Thief, thieeeeeef!
Isaac Dispositions:

-Mihail Chivu - Positive: Isaac understands the outrage in front of the earth ecological disaster, it is only natural. But it is also natural to move on to more realistic expectations from life as you grow older. With Mihail being 30 now, Isaac is getting both impatient and anxious, feeling that the young man will either settle down in his work or do something stupid soon.

-Xi Yingxue - Very Positive: The apple of his eye, it may be hubris but he can't help but see a lot of himself in the young prodigy and gives her a lot more leeway than he does anyone else, which means tolerating minor mistakes as temporary lapses of judgement or gaps in her knowledge he is happy to educate. She is a hard worker after all, not just lazy like all the others. Isaac is doing his best to groom her to take his place should he finally get out of this purgatory but for all his affection, he still doesn't get her, taking her antisocial character at face value and just something she personally prefers so he does polite discussion when they work together but does not try to do anything more.

-Arthur Eel - Negative: A criminal ludite, the fact this is what Concern makes him work with annoys Isaac to no end. Yet he is forced to at least respect the skills of the man, though he only trusts him as far as he can keep an eye on him. An old convict with a grudge against society forced to work in a priceless corporately owned installation, what if he decides to go out with a bang or something?

-Alyssa Cross - Positive: When Alyssa initially came to the Dome, Isaac had been very skeptical to have a murderer work with him, but after a couple of years he mellowed out his opinion somewhat. He isn't sure if she did it or not, but her education and competence are genuine and although her snark is annoying, Isaac has done enough self reflection to understand this is probably how he comes out to others so he's willing to let it slide.

-Yevpraksiya Popova - Very Negative: Without being corpo aristocracy, Isaac led a very sheltered life that makes him unable to believe the dept of human misery some people suffer. In his mind, rough looking ruffian types are taken at face value and Popova must've done something to deserve her fate and all those terrible stories must be exaggerated or lies.

-Rhiannon Rossi - Negative: Too whimsical and not dedicated enough for his tastes, plus they got hired without having an official completed DVM, what is Concern thinking? After these years at least they've proven capable of doing their job without fucking up and if lying on their resume is their worst crimes then he can tolerate them.

-Isaac Adesso - Very Positive: This guy gets it, the urge to embark on a colony ship and get out there in the big unknown! And Isaac also gets it, to be passed over and left behind, your dreams crushed but still having to go on with life. The doctor roots for the EVA specialist and often chooses to turn a blind eye on his cavalier attitude toward regulations as well as schedule at least one yearly physical inspection of dome integrity to get the man to use his skills even if it could have been done remotely by drone.

-Gwendlyn Neilson - Positive: Gwendlyn's CV might not have all the bells and whistles Isaac would want someone working in this dome to have, but his middle class sensibilities give him a lot of respect for someone he sees as genuinely trying to pull herself up by her bootstraps and do better for herself without getting involved in crime like way too many others here. Plus for someone with no bio expertise she grows surprisingly good tea and seasonings and the two have had some fun 'theoretical' discussions about fermentation.
There is literally 3 characters running individual illegal brewing operations lol
Btw, if you're waiting on my post to punctuate things, don't. I have like, one left before I'm ready for timeskip.
