You don't. It's a low information game and you figure things out through trial and error.

When Smash attempted to slot a Spell, I told him he needed to find a spell scroll to slot a spell. Now anyone playing a spellcaster knows that they need to find scrolls.

question, how long does it take for a character to acquire a skill?

Eh, skills don't really exist. It's basically just bonuses to different actions.

If you make a combat oriented character, you'll have bonuses in whatever kind of combat you're doing.

If you punch trees for a bit you'll hit harder than other characters.
