Zoey Boey — Roleplayer Guild

Here's a work in progress of my Spider-Man. I'm not really sure exactly how this character concept proposal system works, or rather if I'm doing it right? I don't know. But I wrote two very short stories about some rather mundane moments in Peter's life, setting up him going to Oscorp. Do you@Lord Wraith want me to write a story about fully fledged Spider-Man being Spider-Man, to see how that's like? Because my plan was for the first chapter or two to be about Peter's life before Spider-Man. Set up his problems and then how his newfound powers effect them.

So, I dunno. I guess I'm looking for criticism.

C H A R A C T E R   C O N C E P T   P R O P O S A LSpider-Man

Peter Benjamin Parker   ♦   Student   ♦   The Big Apple! Or, rather, a little suburb to the west of the Big Apple.  ♦   The little guy.
C H A R A C T E R   C O N C E P T:

"Looks like you've found yourself in a sticky situation! Right?"

Peter isn't Spider-Man, not yet. He's still your average high school loser. Pete never really met his parents- his mother, Mary, apparently died giving birth to him, and his father, Richard, was an aloof middling business man who died in a car crash when Peter was one. So his uncle, Benjamin, and his wife, May, took Peter in.

Peter had always known his Uncle and Aunt-by-Marriage May to be his parents. He never had any misconceptions about who his "real" parents were but he loved Ben and May like parents, and they had always wanted a kid...though the circumstances in which they finally got one were tragic.

So, Peter wanders through life at Midtown High, making above average scores and trying to figure out his place in the world. A small selection of close friends, a loving family, it's all he needs, right?

C H A R A C T E R   M O T I V A T I O N S   &   G O A L S:
I want to play Spider-Man because he's the hero I know the most about and have always related a little bit too. In a freak accident, he'll get Spider-Powers. Intitially, he'll use them for his own gain. Of course, poor Uncle Ben will be killed, and it will indirectly be Peter's fault. So that general goodness inside him plus the all-encompassing guilt will drive Peter to become Spider-Man. He'll be that wholesome, scrappy superhero every universe needs. 

C H A R A C T E R   N O T E S:
My Peter is a mix of MCU, Raimi, his new PS4 game, and Spider-Man from a couple of PS1 games I played as a kid, and that 90's cartoon. Basically all of the Spidey media I have mainly consumed or enjoyed over the years. He's going to have a few more powers, and a few less powers. Lots of the time he's described as having super duper strength, and he will have enhanced strength in my version but not, like, too much. He can't punch somebody's head off, or whatever. 

S A M P L E   P O S T:
I may have gone a bit overboard, got a bit carried away.

"Yeah, okay, listen here, dood," Peter said, exaggerating the last word of his sentence. "Not in a million years could Captain Pump Action defeat the Tyrant of Los Angeles. Just wouldn't happen." 

"Dude," his friend Harry eagerly contested, starting his sentence off with his favorite word, "Captain Pump Action has shotguns for elbows. Shotguns. For. Elbows. The Tyrant of Los Angeles has got a glass jaw, right?"

"N-no," Peter said, laughing. "He can turn people INTO glass, he doesn't-"

The teacher cleared her throat. It seemed that, at some point, everyone had stopped chattering in the classroom, so Peter and Harry's loud voices carried in the relative silence of the room until the end of their nerdy-ass conversation could be heard by everyone.

Ms. Kowalski looked on disapprovingly. "Is there something you boys had to say?" Some girl surpressed her giggles.

"Uh, no ma'am." Peter said.

"Nope." Harry agreed.

"Right." The teacher paused, and then continued her lecture. Trying to ignore the linger glares of their classmates, Peter looked at Harry and grimaced, sucking in air through his teeth. Harry smirked and buried his head in his arms. Yikes, Peter thought to himself, settling in for the rest of the lesson.

After class, Harry and Peter met out in the halls.

"Dude, I'm going to kill myself." Harry said, smacking his forehead into the lockers.

"Oh, relax, Harry," Peter reassured his best friend. "No one remembers that stuff except for you. And me."

"You think so?"

"Well, probably not. I sometimes think of embrassing stuff the other kids have done, so chances are they will be writing down our little moment in their diaries."

Harry groaned and laughed at the same time.

"Dear diary," Peter continued, pitching his voice into a falsetto, "Today I saw Harry and Peter being gay and talking about comic books. I'm going to bully them forever."

"Wow, dude, 'being gay'? You can't say that."

"Wait, you mean, you're not my boyfriend?"

"Oh my- God. Get away from me, weirdo."

"See you after school, Harry."

"No you won't!" Harry called out as he left. Apparently, Peter's loud-ass voice carried once again and some mega-chad heard the 10th grader joke about being homosexual and gave Peter a cruel, mocking look. Cool, Peter thought. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that was Flash Thompson, stereotypical douche quarterback. The 10th grader lowered his glasses and raised his eyebrows at the Flash, who narrowed his eyes.

"What are you lookin' at, faggot?"

Oh, okay, my guy over here is actually homophobic, Peter thought. I'm not even gay and now I have to put up with this. I sure do love school. Peter averted his gaze and walked the other way.

"S'what I thought." 

A zap of anger ran up Pete's spine, but he kept walking. Hopefully this isn't a recurring pattern, Peter thought to himself. Harry had been his best friend since, like, forever. It was always the two of them versus the world. Sure, they had some other friends, but they were like two peas in a pod. It was almost a bromance, but neither of them had the emotional maturity to be comfortable with that. So instead they would just be good friends. Later that day, the two of them met up once more.

"So..." Harry said, looking down at the ground.

Peter sighed. "Yeah. Sure."

"What?" Harry said defensively.

"Sure. I'll go to that thing."

"Fuck yeah, dude!" Harry exclaimed. He then raised one of his red eyebrows. "You mean the Oscorp tour, right?"

"Yeah, I mean the Oscorp tour." Pete said, and Harry pumped his fist.

"I don't get it, Harry. I thought you hated your dad. Why do you want me to go to this thing so bad?"

Harry became solemn. "I mean, I do. I mean, I don't. He's an asshole. Kinda. I dunno. But, look, he's super rich, and I know your family is struggling, and, you're pretty fuckin' smart, right?"

"I'm an idiot."

"Okay, well, look, if you ask me, I can ask him, and he'll probably let you in. Then you could be like, an intern. Then get a real job. I'll tell him your smart. One of those bored supergeniuses. Public school is just so far beneath you, right?"

"Yeah, totally. That's the reason I have a C in spanish."

"Look, come on, asshole, I'm trying to be helpful." Harry looked a little hurt. 

"You're right. I'm sorry. Thank you for inviting me to the Oscorp tour."

"No, dude, you have to ask me."

"What?"

"Yeah, you have to ask me. So I can ask him."

"I don't-"

"Please?"

Peter made an exasperated noise and looked up at the cloudy sky above. "Hey, Harry, can your super rich genius dad let me into that Oscorp tour?"

"You have to say please. Please?" 

Peter gave a wide-eyed look at Harry, who said nothing. Eventually, Peter relented.

"...Please?"

"Fuck yeah, dude!"

Peter had just completed his daily twelve minute walk back home when he heard May and Ben arguing about something from behind the door. The neighborhood was a simple one, low income. Most of the paint was chipped, most of the windows were barred, most of the lawns were overgrown or dead.

The student gently rapped on the door, and the arguing stopped. He used his house-key and entered the room. Ben and May were standing in the middle of the living room. Ben's bald head was shiny and sweat, his white skin turned red in his cheeks, the way he got when he was upset. May was sitting calmly in her chair, her dark complexion showing no signs of being flustered, as she always did.

"Hey, May. Hey, Ben."

"Hello, Peter." May said warmly. "Hi, Pete." Uncle Ben said, wiping his forehead.

"Is, uh, everything okay?"

"Fine, Pete. Just fine. You wanna go to your room and play one of your video games?"

"Now, Ben, Peter should hear what we are talking about."

Ben wrung his hands. "I don't...fine."

Peter set his backpack on the ground. "What's up?"

"Pete, I, uh, lost my job at the factory today."

"Oh, Ben. I'm sorry." Peter said. They were already struggling to make ends meet, what with May not working and the factory paying less and less as time went on.

"It's fine- it's fine. That's not the issue. It's May. She wants to get a job."

"I need to get a job, Ben. I can do it."

"You-" Ben's voice 'lowered' to a harsh whisper. "You are in a wheelchair! I'll not have my own wife looking for jobs while I-..." He trailed off.

May pursed her lips. "I understand. But Ben, you also have to understand. I can take care of myself. There are accommmodations out there for handicapped people."

"What-" Ben retorted. "Get some...get some desk job? Struggle to reach things? Going up...ramps? 'Cause your...'cause your husband can't get another job? I can get another job. I'm sure there's work out there for a guy like me." Uncle Ben could be a little old fashioned. Especially since May's accident, he's convinced that it's his job and his job alone to take care of everyone he loves.

"Maybe I can get a job." Peter suggested.

May looked over, surprised, and Ben looked offended, somehow.

"My own s- nephew? Getting a job to support his uncle? That won't- that's impossible. No way. You need to focus on your, on your studies. You need to go to college. I won't have you stewing behind a french frier just to make ends meet! No, sir! I will find another job!"

May looked on expectantly. "What did you have in mind, Peter?" This provoked an exasperated noise from Ben.

"Well, it's not some fast food job. My friend Harry thinks he can get me into an Oscorp tour thing. You know, look around the office and the labs. Sign up to be an intern, maybe. And if I can be intern, maybe I could get like, an assistant's job there."

Ben was silent. May nodded. "Peter," she said, "If you want to get try and get an internship at Oscorp, than you go for it. We'd be very proud of you." She looked over at Ben.

"Of course, of course we'd be proud. I'm still looking for another job. And, and if this starts to distract you from school you quit right away, understand?"

"Yes sir, absolutely." Peter said, nodding eagerly. "And, it's just a maybe. Apparently Mr. Osborne is always looking for 'unrecognized talent' as he puts it. Maybe I could show off my secret super genius."

Ben smiled. "Yeah, that would be my boy. A regular genius, you are."

"Ben, I- I'm not actually a genius, you know that, right?"

"Don't be so hard on yourself, Pete. You've got it in there. I know it. I know a genius when I see one!" Uncle Ben said, only half-joking.

Peter rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Right. Well, we'll see if this works out, okay? I'm assuming you got some sort of severance...?" Peter trailed off. Ben nodded.

"So, we're good for now. Maybe I could be at a cushy office job, running getting coffee for scientists."

"And help them figure out their math problems." Ben said enthusiastically. 

May smiled again. "Well, Peter, if that's what you want to do. Just know Ben and I are always going to support you, okay? And if you want to quit, we'll be supporting you on that, too." She was trying to act wise and strong, but Peter could make out the worry in her voice. She was worried about the future.

"Yeah. It's this saturday, from two PM to five. Apparently, Harry is going to get me a ride. I got homework to do, so..." Peter picked up his backpack again with one arm and walked into his room, slowly closing the door shut behind him. He sighed nervously and got to work on his spanish. "Donday est la banyo?" He muttered to himself.
