Emotional Resonance: When Judy is near someone who is undergoing a great amount of emotion, she is capable of "draining" them of it just by being near them, but the process is sped up via touch. If someone dies near her, a great deal of this Resonance of their final emotion is released. Their body also disintegrates into a glowing white smoke. Judy feels the barest hint of what they were feeling, however this is mostly used to charge up her offensive powers.

She is capable of expelling these emotions from her like a beacon. If she has accumulated a great amount of fear, she can instill terror in the people that look at her or otherwise feel her presence. On the flip side she can reverse this ability, draining the emotions from those around her until they lack the will to live, though this process takes hours. Both of these unnatural manipulations of emotions can be disrupted by distance, and she can only do one or the other, not both.

Reaper: Judy wields a mysterious white energy. She can convert herself into this energy to move great distances rapidly; as well as spaces too narrow to fit through. Release it in very high damage slashes, blasts, or projectiles, as well as using it to defend herself with force fields. The more Emotional Resonance she has gathered, the more powerful she is. Not only are they capable of considerable physical damage, focused strikes can sap even the most resilient targets of their life force. This combined with her Emotional Resonance means she is literally a terror on the battlefield with immense destructive potential. A living weapon.

Description: An unassuming teenage girl. Shorter than average, a thin frame. Her head is a little too big and wobbly. She has chin length black hair in something like a bob, and pale skin. She usually wears baggy, loose, and large black hoodies and black skirts. The most noticeable thing about Judy is her eyes. The iris is completely black, making it seem like she has very large pupils instead. When using her powers, the iris turn shades of grey or white. Her demeanor is very obviously empty, lacking, like she isn't quite there. A superstitious person might say Judy is soulless.

Personality: Judy Jennings doesn't really feel anything. Not like other people, anyway. Emotion has eluded her for her entire life. Rather than emotions, she seems to have strange impulses. Usually she is cold, analytical, detatched. She is curious, often wanting to learn more of the world around her and the people in it.

She has a creative streak, and is capable of understanding the beauty of the world around her, often drawing or writing about it. Simultaneously she has destructive urges- the desire to kill. Animals, people, anything, really. To see how they die and then absorb their emotions, and resonate with them. To push her abilities to the limit. When the rational part of her mind realises how this could lead to her own destruction, she tries to channel these impulses into a creative direction. Every once in a while though she must find something to snuff the life out of.

She is not arrogant or prideful, she doesn't feel those things. She doesn't feel contempt for those who do feel emotions- if anything she is very curious about things like love and hate. She is a girl of simple whims and desires. To create and destroy. Despite her off-putting emptiness, Judy can be a person who is very easy to hang around with. She is the ultimate non-judgemental person and will listen to whoever cares to talk. Her unique perspective and dry comments can even be somewhat endearing. As long as she isn't suffering from a rare destructive impulse, she is entirely stable, predictable, and safe to be around.

As for villainous plans, Judy isn't sure. Right now she is thinking of, somehow, eliminating all life on the planet. It just feels...inevitable. She keeps this to herself, though. In terms of short term goals, some reliable way of becoming a serial killer without attracting attention to herself would be preferable.

This all ended rather quickly when Judy's birth killed Delilah. James fell into a depression. He became a hermit, and resented Judy for being born, revealing himself to be a hateful and cruel person. This was before Judy was revealed to be the strange, unfeeling "monster" she is today. When he figured that out, he felt validated of his hate towards her.

This was the environment Judy was raised in until eventually, James found out about Judy's murderous impulses. There was a confrontation, and Judy's own powers awakened. A life time of hate absorbed by the girl made quick work of the experience super hero once it was turned back on him. She didn't hold anything against him, or feel much anything at all. Judy concluded life didn't have much value after all, and decided to eventually take it upon herself to exterminate the human race. This most likely didn't jive with a heroic academy so she found her way to a villainous one, instead. After all she needs time to grow, first. A short life thus far, full of nothing but cruelty, malice, and misery. Oh, well. Only place from here is up.

She's also compassionate. She cares for the students and staff of Lanius, and wants to help them succeed. Her goal is to do good. To help the less stable become more stable. The genocidal maniacs? Perhaps all they need is someone to give them a hug. Then, they can just be regular serial killers. She doesn't really care about doing evil. Though she has her reasons to dislike the status quo. She just wants people to be happy. The people she meets would still do what they were doing no matter what she did- but if she can help just a little then maybe they can find the life they truly deserve. She believes villainy should be rational and fair. If not, then she will just try to minimize the damage. A lot of these kids just lack a positive parental figure. And if she's being honest, a lot of her fellow teachers...aren't exactly that.

Really, Alexandra is just suspiciously normal. She absolutely would not be out of place at a regular school, or even a heroic school.

Maybe Alexandra is a little crazy. She's a thrillseeker and curious about the pyschology of others. About what makes the human mind tick. Everyone is just the most complex rubix cube in the world. She's fascinated by the idea that the right 'mouth-sounds' can carry enough weight to change the course of someone's life forever. And of course she's unfazed by gore and death, and totally willing to take a human life herself. Though she generally isn't a fan of violence or even using her powers- instead preferring to solve her problems diplomatically.

Mrs. K is interested in doing good- in helping people. Those people just happen to be what most people would call "evil." So she works for the good of evil. Makes sense, right? Having spent a lifetime around villains ranging from the terrifying to the whacky, Alexandra has seen it all. Little disturbs her- just another day at the office.

Being an impulsive teenager at the time, she used it to steal from people. Then mess with them in general. Only people she didn't know- never on her friends or family.

She needed money. Her mother was sick, her father, jobless. Her friends, too, suffered from poverty. It was terribly unfair. Some people were born with power. Not just super powers- the power of money, wealth, and influence. Why shouldn't she use her gifts to get what she wanted? While those on top were exploiting everyone already?

So began the crime spree of Decema and the Minute Hands. The notorious master thief and gang leader. She and her quickly acquired gang of loyal goons struck bank after bank, defeated low level superheroes with trickery. She paired up with other super villains for maximum effeciency. She was a part of multiple super-villain team ups. Everyone knew her as the mysterious, charismatic villain who could stop time for ten seconds. She was even a robin hood type figure, tossing stolen money out of get away cars to the people. She even did some actual good stuff, like screwing over super scummy businesses and corporations. It was fun!

(She figured they would figure out her ability eventually, so she constantly boasted about the ability to stop time for ten seconds. Little did they know, she can actually stop time for eleven seconds! Muahahaha! Bah. If only it was twelve, though. Then the branding would be perfect.)

This all lasted from when she was about twenty to when she was thirty. In the meantime she went to college, found a husband and got married. She got a degree in psychology. She didn't even have to lead a double life, because David Wright knew she was a super villain and he was like, totally into it. Let's just say sometimes the costume stayed on.

And what a life it was. She never got caught, and no one ever suspected. She could stop time, for Christ's sake. As long as she was careful and kept her head down, she was basically untouchable. Once she had made a comfortable life for herself, she kept running her middling criminal enterprise as a side gig. The Minute Hands are still on brand and lend their services out to villains today, though the Decema persona has mostly retired. Sometimes she still puts on the costume, though, but her appearances are rare. Only once or twice every couple of years since she became a professor.

She signed up for Lanius when she was thirty-one and has worked there as a professor/ counselor ever since. She had two kids with David, Lucia and David Junior. Couple of little rascals. They don't know about mommy's work yet, of course, but they're raising them so that when they find out they won't be shocked. They might even grow up to be crooks themselves! Here's hoping! Resonant Stone:

The main conduit of Lily's powers. Wear them as an object for her powers to work. She usually makes them into a necklace, but they can be anything, even just held in the palm of the hand. They must be specially made through arcane processes that take a while. They usually take the form of river-polished stones with runes carved into them. But they can be trinkets, talismans, or drawings.

The Resonant Stone's do not need to be equipped on someone for healing potions to work. But they do help. Especially with the more severe wounds. More severe wounds such as detached limbs will need special attention from various items Lily has at her disposal. It's by no means an instant process but given enough time she can help people survive grievous wounds.

Lily's "magic" only works in two circumstances- either she is there, or a Resonant Stone is there. If neither are present, the paranormal affects of whatever she is doing will be severely dampered. If both are there, the magic will work slightly better and be harder to disturb.

Lily's power comes from belief, and dreams. The idea that believing something to be so makes it so. She is one of the few people in the world to have ever truly grasped this concept. This belief can Resonate through objects, which is what the Resonant Stones are. If there are none, then only the residual power of the objects themselves remain, which isn't much.

Main Powers:

Healing: Lily can heal extremely grievous wounds with various bizarre medical techniques. Most of them involve potions and Resonant Stones.

Pigeons: Lily has various pet 'clay' pigeons around the school that report back to her whenever an incident occurs.

Fourth Room: There are three primary rooms in Lily's office. The third one, always available to the public, looks like an ordinary nurse's office. It even has things like a first aid kit and an eye-washing station.

The second room is where most of her treatment happens. It had stranger supplies. The walls and floor are made of wood, the light on the wall is an ethereal flame that is comfortably warm to the touch. There are cabinents and book shelves and chests. A large wooden table with optional straps for doing more advanced procedures. The second room is heavily enchanted. People have a hard time fighting in here- resonant stones are in every corner and there are runes hidden on the reverse side of the floorboards. It's a non-violence zone.

The third room is Lily's bedroom. Students are rarely allowed back here, but Lily doesn't seem to be particularly secretive about it. There's a comfortable bed, a chalkboard with writing that spills onto the wooden walls around. A book shelf lined with old tomes. The ceiling in particular seems to be some kind of star map of an area of space that doesn't exist.

The Fourth room, no one is allowed into. For their own safety. It's a space between spaces, a land where dreams and nightmares become reality and the shadows of the world become reality. It's also home to the Oldest Library, the place where Lily first found the Oldest Book when she was a little girl. In it she is capable of viewing extra-planar dimensions and entities. The most dangerous experiments are done here. It seems to stretch on forever, but the extension of Lily's power is clearly marked. There is a boundary where the Fourth Room ends and the rest of the strange world it resides in begins. Travelling outside without proper protection is extremely dangerous. Slowly over time Lily extends her influence but, since she has a sizeable amount of territory staked, she has ceased for now.

Lily is a potion making genius. She carries on her an assortment of vials for various purposes. They can boost one's strength, speed, durablity. Enhance powers or disable them. Kill someone instantly. Most of the potions she makes, the more common ones, are for medicinal purposes. They can cure a vast amount of ailments. Powder can be applied to wounds to patch them up and liquids imbibes to seal them. The potions seem to have an intelligence of their own, like drinking them is inviting a personality into one's heart. All of these are the "Real Cures". They are the true medicine of this world, with everything else being a false imitation. According to Lily, anyway. These potions tap into the power of the mind and soul.

She is also a master of the occult. Lost languages, strange rituals. She is capable of altering life and bending creatures to her will. Objects can be granted powers, becoming trinkets and talismans. All of this with preparation, experiments, and testing before hand, of course. Either way, Lily seems to have a 'truer' understanding of the world than most people do. Clearly, this knowledge has cost her some of her mind.

Besides drawing on the latent powers within our own reality, Lily has two main abilities.

Heal Ailment: She can heal people of injuries with her potions.

Twist Creature: A ritual to bend the will of living things to her will. She mostly does this with doves. Now they look like they are made of clay, with oily black eyes. They follow her commands and observe the school, reporting back to her when there are incidents she is needed for.

She can do much more than this, but these are the two things she will do the most. However potions can be brewed for various purposes should the need arise, and rituals can be prepared in interesting circumstances. All she needs is the knowledge and the ingredients.

Description: Lily is a very beautiful blonde woman, standing at about 5 feet, 4 inches tall. Her hair is always tied up into a bun. She has glassy hazel eyes. Her frame is fit, but not muscular. She wears simple clothes, usually t-shirts of various grey colors. The most exceptional thing about her is her large, heavy leather satchel. It's full of various potions and items.

Personality: The first thing someone notices about Lily is the strange way she talks. Very often she says things in roundabout, obtuse ways that seem like nonsense that has to be deciphered. She even speaks words in a language no one knows but her. She's not incapable of speaking normally and succinctly. But about half the time it's like her words are being filtered through something. She doesn't seem to be aware her words often don't make sense to other people. She prefers it when people talk straight with her.

Lily is also distant, forgetful, and unobservant. Most of the time she is lethargic and detached. She's also habitually tired. Her sleep schedule is non-existant, so she is very sleepy a lot of the time. Occasionally she will just drift off into a nap. Sometimes she forgets where she is, why she is there, or even who she is in the first place. It can all just melt away. And all that's left is the True Reality of her works.

Lily likes helping the people at Lanius. Especially the students. She lives at Lanius and feels safe there. Lily is hardly a teacher and will usually just let the students do whatever they want. The only exception being violence, which she will try to stop. If someone is interested in learning from her about her occultist ways, they will quickly become aware that reading the texts in her library are what caused her to be the way she is.

Much like she has bouts of complete apathy, she will occasionally become hyper-lucid. Then, she is quick, volatile, energetic and optimistic. Though she can also be irritable. She even becomes something of a flirt, trying to catch the attention of the other teachers. This is quite rare though and usually only happens when she gets enough sleep.

Nonetheless, the thing Lily cares the most about is her work. As long as no one destroys her room and her projects, she can be friendly and co-operative. She even has a strange wisdom about her. She is an agent of Real Truth, and can be aware of lies, facades, and omissions.

Crush: Most of the teachers here are handsome and beautiful.

Skills:

She has exceptionally clear handwriting, beautiful calligraphy, and unbelievably stable hands. Other than that, it's only her studies into the occult. She can read the ancient texts and languages there that no one else can, unless they commit to the same path she has followed.

Weaknesses:

Just catch her unawares and destroy her potions. Without them she doesn't have much going on. She also doesn't like drinking her own potions, preferring instead to give them to others.


Brief History: There isn't too much to say. Lily was a normal girl with normal parents and a sister. She was lively, a bit introverted, and loved spooky stories. Then one day, she found the Oldest Book. It was an exponential ascendance. She became obsessed, did some untoward experiments on her school mates and...here she is. She is something of a shut in and rarely if ever leaves Lanius grounds. She asks people to bring her ingredients from the outside world. In return, she is a perfect nurse, able to heal the grevious wounds that may be afflicted on the students here.

Other: Her personal quarters and the nurses office are only separated by one door, and are pretty much one and the same. It is a strange place full of trinkets and notes that look scattered and incomprehensible. Still, it feels...safe. It is a magically protected place.

Emotional Resonance: When Judy is near someone who is undergoing a great amount of emotion, she is capable of "draining" them of it just by being near them, but the process is sped up via touch. If someone dies near her, a great deal of this Resonance of their final emotion is released. Their body also disintegrates into a glowing white smoke. Judy feels the barest hint of what they were feeling, however this is mostly used to charge up her offensive powers.

She is capable of expelling these emotions from her like a beacon. If she has accumulated a great amount of fear, she can instill terror in the people that look at her or otherwise feel her presence. On the flip side she can reverse this ability, draining the emotions from those around her until they lack the will to live, though this process takes hours. Both of these unnatural manipulations of emotions can be disrupted by distance, and she can only do one or the other, not both.

Reaper: Judy wields a mysterious white energy. She can convert herself into this energy to move great distances rapidly; as well as spaces too narrow to fit through. Release it in very high damage slashes, blasts, or projectiles, as well as using it to defend herself with force fields. The more Emotional Resonance she has gathered, the more powerful she is. Not only are they capable of considerable physical damage, focused strikes can sap even the most resilient targets of their life force. This combined with her Emotional Resonance means she is literally a terror on the battlefield with immense destructive potential. A living weapon.

Description: An unassuming teenage girl. Shorter than average, a thin frame. Her head is a little too big and wobbly. She has chin length black hair in something like a bob, and pale skin. She usually wears baggy, loose, and large black hoodies and black skirts. The most noticeable thing about Judy is her eyes. The iris is completely black, making it seem like she has very large pupils instead. When using her powers, the iris turn shades of grey or white. Her demeanor is very obviously empty, lacking, like she isn't quite there. A superstitious person might say Judy is soulless.

Personality: Judy Jennings doesn't really feel anything. Not like other people, anyway. Emotion has eluded her for her entire life. Rather than emotions, she seems to have strange impulses. Usually she is cold, analytical, detatched. She is curious, often wanting to learn more of the world around her and the people in it.

She has a creative streak, and is capable of understanding the beauty of the world around her, often drawing or writing about it. Simultaneously she has destructive urges- the desire to kill. Animals, people, anything, really. To see how they die and then absorb their emotions, and resonate with them. To push her abilities to the limit. When the rational part of her mind realises how this could lead to her own destruction, she tries to channel these impulses into a creative direction. Every once in a while though she must find something to snuff the life out of.

She is not arrogant or prideful, she doesn't feel those things. She doesn't feel contempt for those who do feel emotions- if anything she is very curious about things like love and hate. She is a girl of simple whims and desires. To create and destroy. Despite her off-putting emptiness, Judy can be a person who is very easy to hang around with. She is the ultimate non-judgemental person and will listen to whoever cares to talk. Her unique perspective and dry comments can even be somewhat endearing. As long as she isn't suffering from a rare destructive impulse, she is entirely stable, predictable, and safe to be around.

As for villainous plans, Judy isn't sure. Right now she is thinking of, somehow, eliminating all life on the planet. It just feels...inevitable. She keeps this to herself, though. In terms of short term goals, some reliable way of becoming a serial killer without attracting attention to herself would be preferable.

Emotionally Stunted: Judy cannot pick on lies. She can only detect them using rationality and logic. Emotional queues in general go completely over her head. Fear also evolved for a reason. Judy lacks a primal survival instinct.

The Power of Friendship: The more emotions Judy absorbs via destruction or contact, the more power she gains. For her entire life this has been kept to things like fear and anger. However were she to strike down a deep, heroic soul, then she would absorb those feeling, as well. This will lead to great emotional instability. No one, not even Judy, knows this weakness. As long as she can absorb and resonate fear and terror, she could keep on killing, but strong "souls" could break through. Similarly, love, compassion, and sympathy are also things she can absorb via contact or proximity as well. Whether she likes it or not.


Brief History: Judy Jennings was born to a pair of superhero parents. Her father James was named Blink, her mother Delilah was Spark. Blink had the power of short ranged teleportation, Spark had the power of emotional manipulation. They were members of a team, and made quite the dynamic duo.

This all ended rather quickly when Judy's birth killed Delilah. James fell into a depression. He became a hermit, and resented Judy for being born, revealing himself to be a hateful and cruel person. This was before Judy was revealed to be the strange, unfeeling "monster" she is today. When he figured that out, he felt validated of his hate towards her.

This was the environment Judy was raised in until eventually, James found out about Judy's murderous impulses. There was a confrontation, and Judy's own powers awakened. A life time of hate absorbed by the girl made quick work of the experience super hero once it was turned back on him. She didn't hold anything against him, or feel much anything at all. Judy concluded life didn't have much value after all, and decided to eventually take it upon herself to exterminate the human race. This most likely didn't jive with a heroic academy so she found her way to a villainous one, instead. After all she needs time to grow, first. A short life thus far, full of nothing but cruelty, malice, and misery. Oh, well. Only place from here is up.

Personality

Personality: A good natured, self conscious girl who loves to make friends, even if she's quite shy. She likes making jokes but she's the type of person who's joke gets repeated louder, and everyone laughs at that instead. Often she gets lost in her own head, dreaming of designs for weapons, vehicles, and robots- the three things she loves most in this world. Clever and intelligent, except when it comes to people. But she likes people, even if they can confuse and hurt her with words. Sky wears her heart on her oil stained sleeve. She believes in the good of humanity.

Sky can be scared quite easily, not exactly being a very brave or confrontational person. She prefers to support others rather than face conflict alone. Sky also doesn't think very much of herself or her abilities, and she's struggled continuously with low self-esteem. She loves building and inventing things, but when she isn't doing that she's usually playing video games or listening to/ trying to create her own music. Sky is a creative type, and though she loves mechanics she's also trying to make arts and crafts of various kinds with just as varying success. Sky like to experiment or try new things in life, even if change can be scary.

Biography

Country of Origin: Vale
Bio: Violet was raised by her adopted mother and father, Tiffany and Indigo Sfyri. She was born with a deformed right leg. Her mother was a human engineer and her father was an accountant, a poet in his free time, and a faunus. She loves them dearly. She also has an older sister, Azul. Azul is sixteen years older than her, and is a cat faunus like her father. The Sfyri family adopted Violet because they wanted another child but Tiffany was worried her age might cause complications.

Inheriting Tiffany's love of mechanics and Indigo's passion for creativity, Violet decided from a young age to give Atlas a run for their money as to which nation has the best tech. Mechanics, artificial intelligence, weaponry- Violet loved it all. She had a hard time picking which thing to settle down on. Being born firmly middle class meant Sky could go to a good school to further her passions. So she did. Azul became a soldier and when she came around to visit, taught Sky how to defend herself. Azul is kind of a short-tempered person so she wasn't the best teacher. They both find it funny in retrospect.

Sky's life changed one day when she and her father were visiting Tiffany in her place of work. Sky was 14, and already innovating in the field of artificial technology. However, mercenaries attacked the workshop, looking to steal its secrets and technology to sell and use to gain more power. This wasn't the main issue- during the attack the mercenaries opened the pathway for Grimm. A beowolf attacked her and her father. Her father almost lost his life, being severely wounded. Sky faired worse, losing her left arm. This stressful moment was also the day she unlocked her Semblance, Technopathy, which she used to try and help her family escape before the Grimm got her. They were only saved by the intervention of a Huntress.

That was the day she wanted to learn to truly defend herself and others so that no one could hurt those she cared about with her being helpless. Azul came over and their training picked up. Violet wanted to become a Huntress, just like the one that had saved her. Three years later, and here she is.

In the meantime she built herself an armored truck she named Baby Blue and a robo-dog named Robo-dog. She helped her mother with her engineer contracts, getting access to equipment she normally would not be able too. Her Semblance made her a great trouble shooting asset, as well, so she is in the good graces of many manufacturing workshops across Vale.

Combat

Weapon: Big Wrench

Big Wrench is a big wrench. It's a two handed crescent wrench, like a great mace. In the center of the crescent wrench there's a hole to fire projectiles from. The back of the Big Wrench has a stock and trigger guard, and receptacle to put in Cells. The crescent can spin horizontally, increasing its power.

The Big Wrench fires molten metal in many different forms. The simplest one a short ranged spray, like a liquid flame thrower. It can also be used to fire sharpnel or slugs. The molten metal has a sticky consistency, making it difficult for Grimm to get out of once it has them ensared. The spinning crescent can be heated up, creating a powerful impact point for enhanced damage. It uses custom-made reusable Cells full of hot liquid that she keeps in her heat resistant backpack/toolbox. The Cells can be enhanced with different types of Dust, but she hasn't experimented with it much at all due to how expensive Dust is.

Semblance:

Technopath: An empathy for machines.

Her Aura can be linked with machines if she is touching them. Her Aura gains strength from machines and her Aura protects the machines she touches. This includes vehicles, weapons, and devices. When touching a device she can control it and speak to it. It can "talk" to her, telling her what its seen, diagnose its own problems.

The machines under her influence become enhanced by Aura. They can also bend and move strangely organically, like they almost become alive. Cars can ben their wheels and chassis like limbs, weapons twitch when they sense enemies.

She can repair and interface with mechanical devices effortlessly, including her own artificial limbs. She's a master car driver and engineer.

Emily appreciated Valerian's response to her question. But Emily really did want to see what had happened for herself. When she had eaten the cookie and Linda got onto her about it, Emily narrowed her eyes. "Well, now I know more about it than you." She popped the rest of the cookie- unseasoned- into her mouth and stood, preparing to follow Linda to the police officers.

But something caught her attention. She sneezed into her elbow as a strange metallic scent met her sense. Valerian definitely noticed it, too. Emily followed behind them as they went to investigate. She leaned far over to her right side, peering over their shoulder. The mirror wasn't a mirror, it was a doorway. Or, a window. It was deep. Was this real? Valerian was noticing it, too. "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the prettiest of them all? What story is that from? I can't remember. Snow White?" Emily mused beneath her breathe as she drew nearer to the source of the disturbance.

It came much more clearly into view. A smile creeped over Emily's lips. "I knew there was more to this world than entropy." She said to Valerian. Then she narrowed her eyes. "There's someone in there. Trapped in the mirror." Her heart rate quickened as the mysterious figure, so far away, made their plea.

"We won't. We won't leave you." Emily said, concern flashing across her features. Valerian, however, seemed to respond differently.

"Isn't it obvious? They want our help. Only we can see them, Valerian. What if they've been trapped in there? What if they're a witness and have been cursed inside the mirror world? Or maybe we have nothing to gain and should help them just because that's the right thing to do." Emily pleaded with earnest. With that she turned and took a step towards the mirror, beginning to reach her hand out as if to touch it's surface.
