The mages stationed in Orngat slowly began to realize that it would not go like the Second Mage War. Where the Holy Lands and Limgar were destroyed in order for New Engelica to grow. No this was a defensive war. And the battles they would fight would always be defensive. Meaning that for once, disciplined coordination was of utmost importance. Eléane continued to drill her mages during the down periods, when the skies seemed clear. Luckily the mages could also count on their gaining experience. In the meantime, their very presence was doing funny things with Orngat. The dwarves and humans might start noticing oddities like small lights in the water. The presence of mages of New Engelica was waking them up.

The Darkness was pushing hard, but the Broken Empire would not fall, not to the monsters that crawled from the shadows. Bolstering the weak points of the coastal provinces, while continuing to hold the stronghold in the east, the Dwarves and Orcs braced themselves for the coming Darkness, wherever it came from. Gaining knowledge of their foe from allies far to the east, the Broken Empire began to tighten it's ties with the other surviving nations, preparing to send it's message out.

The Darkness would be driven back, and the Broken Empire would be the one to do it.

Summer of 2719

The weak sunlight that makes it through the swirling black clouds gathering above Alria shines on a much changed landscape. The very ground itself has been tainted by the Darkness, the land made sick and the oceans turning inky black, whatever the outcome of this desperate war, Alria will never be the same.

Facing the Darkness for the first time, New Engelica fights alongside the metal defenders of Orngat, facing screaming harpies in the skies above them as the Storm Tempest is once more summoned to the aid of the powerful nation. Those that remained in New Engelica can hardly believe the horrors that their brothers and sisters are facing on a foreign shore.

Desperately holding the line against the ever-pressing Darkness, Tushienia takes a serious blow in it's battle. Perhaps the nation's greatest strength, it's mastery of undead magics, wanes in the face of the Shadow as immensely powerful magics strip them of their powers. The undead will no longer rise to Tushienia's call, and the Darkness, sensing a moment of weakness, push forwards in greater numbers than ever before.

For the first time since the Darkness toppled the Great Alliance, a nation has taken the fight to the foul nightmares. The Broken Empire, hurling itself against the Shadow with a frenzy, pushes back the Darkness from a province in which it had settled just months before. They find the land twisted and nightmarish, but they claim the land, forges already being re-lit and defenses repaired in preparation for the inevitable retaliation.

The Kingdom of Zakol bursts into action, refusing to allow the waters to fall to the Darkness as they hurl almost their entire fleet in a desperate attempt to push the Shadow back from their vulnerable coasts. Armies march to the north, shoring up the defenses of their allies the Republic of Andinon while Zakol encounters the Darkness on land for the first time, easily driving them back.

Now doubt grateful of their allies coming aid, the Republic of Andinon continues to hold their lines against the Darkness, even as in shady workshops and libraries, the nation is gathering all information they can that will help them against their mortal foe. Perhaps some breakthrough will come from the studious Gnomes...

Pankra falls silent even as one of their islands are seized from them by the Darkness, their people slaughtered and villages razed to the ground.

As another island falls to the shadows, and the shifting shapes beneath the waters draw loser to the Republic of Outcasts, there can be no doubt that it will be under the weak summer sun that the nation will be truly tested, facing the Darkness for the first time. As the nations around them fall silent, and allies are far in the distance, it will soon come down to a desperate fight for survival.

Orngat faces the Darkness for the first time, and, aided greatly by their elven allies, manage to drive off the first contact, although there can be no doubt that, as the Shadow continues to push through the waters, the fight will not always be so easy. However, bolstered as they are by their two new-found allies, there is hope that they will hold.

Mylori Firehammer let out a booming laugh as his Great Axe cut deep into the muscled sinews in the foul creatures shoulder. As the monster turned to try and lash out at the dwarf, he ducked beneath it's clawing talons and with almost a flourish, brought his weapons blade down on the creatures neck, silencing it's screeching as it's severed head fell to the ground, quickly followed by it's lifeless body. As he looked across the battlefield, the few remaining creatures desperately attempting to lift themselves into the air but being silenced one after the other. Feeling a sudden chill in the air, Mylori's smile faded, and he turned to face the Orc Warlock.

"Your machines served well today Dwarf"

Turning to look across the churned ground, where the metal warriors of two Dwarven nations now stood perfectly still, awaiting their next orders, Mylori allowed himself a smile.

"And your undead died tactically"

If there was any kind of emotion behind the still face of Warlock Thro'Gan, it did not show. Instead, the Orc simply turned it's inky black gaze out across the sea.

"They will come again, stronger. They will keep coming unless we can stem the tide"

Wiping the ichor from the blade of his Great Axe, Mylori too turned his gaze out across the waters.

"Let them come, I've barely whet my appetite for monster-hunting"

Tavirin Blackstone spat on the ground as he cut down the last of the foul gibbering creatures that had crawled out from the ground itself to fall upon the invading Broken Empire. But they were met with the fell magics of Warlocks and the steel of Dwarf and Machine alike, and none could stand before them. The ground itself was blackened and warped, alien to look upon, but they had already reclaimed a string of settlements, little more than rudimentary hill forts, but places from which to orchestrate a defense, and to light the forges.

At Tavirin's shoulder, Warlock Grugar'Tar was silent, flanked as ever by the Lichguard, their wicked blades coated in the inky blood of the creatures of Darkness. The two great figures, both regarded as the leader of their race, even among the council, did not need to speak to understand one another.

The Broken Empire, establishing a more serious battleline. With each province taken, new warriors could be raised to bring the fight to the Darkness, and even now Tavirin hoped that news of their victory was lighting the fires of hope in other nations. Bripiak was already mustering for war, preparing to push back the Shadow where they could.

In almost a hushed whisper, Grugar'Tar spoke.

"I can feel him. Dagar’Thuun. His power is unimaginable, but I can feel him. He's out there. If we can reach him, we could end this"

Tavirin turned to the Orc, face weary but stubborn,

"I'll cut the bastards head off myself for what he's done."

Province 15
It was good that Tushienia had come, because their magic had not. The skeletons that Andinon had been using to suffer the brute of their losses were no longer in play. Apparently the darkness had figured out how to counteract it. Of course they knew that the darkness could adapt, but they hadn't anticipated this much. Their infantry had been butchered while the ranged forces had been of little use against them. While Andinon was also adapting, they were doing it much slower. The darkness had much more resources and it was starting to show. With Necromancy failing Andinon it torn between turning to science or magic, but decides to rely on the magic that has kept them safe for so long, seeking to give the elements more physical form in the battle against the darkness.

Province 19
The fail of necromancy was unfortunately not isolated. Of course the line had still held, even against the ridiculous monsters they faced but it was growing more and more taxing. They had to push back and soon. Dirigibles were being sent into the closest darkness infested regions to see what forces lay there and whether sending an attack force would be suicide. The small pistols were now standard Harrier issue, much more effective than the lances used previously. It allowed them to strike harder from farther away. But it didn't warrant a reckless excursion into enemy territory. All in good time.

Province 8

The push by the Darkness into Province 8 had cost lives, but not as many as it might have.

The full force of the dark horde had been denied by canyon that now spanned the length of the hostile boarder, a wound in the world that had been ripped open by great magics before the canyon itself had been pumped full of molten lava and magma in order to ensure that nothing would be able to travel between the provinces on foot. It had been an act of desperation but it had won the day and brought Duringis some much needed breathing room so that it could rest and retrain its forces so that it could defend itself properly.

There was still the risk of the harpies flying over to do some raiding, so to that end some of the forces in the area would be remaining to aid in repelling air assaults for the time being, but most of the forces were being ordered onto the trains to go elsewhere.

.......................................................

Province 7

Even as the new trains arrived, word had spread throughout the military forces stationed in the fortress province of Province 7 that something big was about to go down.

They would be right one way or another.

Another successful battle. Though this time it’s victory had not that much to do with the aptitude of the mages of New Engelica. Eléane began to see how the monsters of the Darkness worked. They were a horde. Uncontrolled and without strategy. Resorting to basic instincts. The giant fishes, which the mages swiftly called Leviathans, were a testament to that. They were defeated by simply being lured in by rafts and confiscated ships. Even the harpies were driven by pure bloodlust. If any of them were smart they would have gone straight for the mages alone with their full force. But because they worked on primal instincts, survival was more important than success. Even the small force that still descended from the skies several months ago had scattered itself over the mechanical warriors. Turning that entire battle into a one sided slaughter. This revealed a great deal to Eléane.

It was also Eléane who took one Leviathan corpse. Their elementals helped drag the massive being on the shore. Where 5 War-Magi kept vigil. The giant fish radiated a black aura, testament of the Darkness’ power. She allowed her mind to wander sometimes. Day dreaming about how it would feel to wield such awesome power, to command such massive army of monstrous beasts. And according to many of her friends, she wasn’t the only one. It was power ever so seducing.

Aside from protecting the corpse of the Leviathan, most other mages kept to their drills and meditations. Though now every now and then one would descend towards a city center to buy special supplies and herbs. Dwarfs and men alike probably raised an eyebrow as a quite colorfully dressed person walked their streets. Often accompanied by a coyote made of dust and sand, or a small fiery red bird. Spirits that took extreme liking to their master and decided to remain their familiar. The orders were even stranger. Odd herbs or even worse, dead animals.

Senate of Outcasts
The Senate was assembled. The votes had been tallied. And it was agreed. A portion of their ships and army would retreat to the allies on the mainland, while the rest held. For now, everyone would hold the line until arrangements could be made.

Autumn of 2719

As the leaves that still remain un-scorched by war fall from the trees, the air grows cold and the nights long and dark. With the approaching winter comes the Darkness once more, in heavy numbers and all across Alria, people suffer at the hands of the Shadow. And for the first time since the Great Alliance fell, reports of the Arch-Lich himself are spreading like wildfire through the surviving nations.

Once more standing beside their allies against the Darkness, New Engelica experiences the strength of the Darkness, but also begins to unravel weaknesses in the creatures that are sent against them. Aided by their conjured Familiars, the proud magical nation continues to act as a bulwark of hope against the onrushing foe, even as they begin to truly understand the truly dark magic’s that they face.

While other nations, when stripped of perhaps their greatest strength, would fall back behind their mighty walls, Tushienia rallies its forces and leads a charge into the land of Darkness, following the example of the Broken Empire far to the south, and driving out the Shadow from the land, although the price is high. Foul black clouds bring with them terrible new discoveries about the power of the Darkness, and this news will no doubt be spread among the proud nation’s many allies.

The Broken Empire once more march into the foul lands of the Shadow, aided by the Dolarti Tribesmen who, having fled into the Empire’s land for safety now march alongside their saviours to reclaim their stolen lands, just as they do as Bripiak too reclaims lost lands from the Darkness. To the North, aiding their fellow Dwarves of Orngat, the Darkness is beaten back by a contingent of War-Magi and Mechanical Warriors from the Empire, wiping out the scouting party of the Shadow.

For the Kingdom of Zakol, the summer was bloody and proved to any who doubted it, the pure power that the Darkness possesses. Standing with their allies to the North, Zakol helped beat back hideous, nightmarish creatures at a bloody cost, while in their own lands their defences are barely tested. A flood of refugees, warriors and civilians from the Krognar Tribe, barely make it to the safety of Zakol before their home is consumed by the Darkness.

Aided by their allies, the Republic of Andinon face indescribable horrors as they desperately fight to hold their lines against the unrelenting hordes of the Shadow that continue to test their defences time and time again. And yet even as they struggle below, the proud Gnomish Dirigibles take to the air and scout the lands of the Darkness, searching for some chink in the Shadows defence that they can exploit.

Beset by foul monsters of Darkness, the Republic of Outcasts fight desperately to hold back the Shadow, and succeed. And yet there is no time for celebration as the Darkness continues to encircles the island nation, another of the northern islands being consumed by the creatures, leaving the Republic far from allies and faced with an immensely powerful enemy.

Orngat, once more assailed by the Shadow, beats the creatures back again, aided by both of their trusted allies, the Elves of New Engelica and the Dwarves of the Broken Empire. Desperate to greater understand their foe, Orngat seeks to dissect the monsters they have already defeated, hoping to glean any kind of weaknesses that may aid them in the future.

New Traits

In the Face of Adversity: As the Darkness continues to slaughter the defenders of the proud nations of Alria, a surge of defiance rises and new waves of men and woman, eager to fight and die for their country, leads to increased recruitment across all provinces (Allows 2 Army Units to be trained per Province as opposed to the normal 1)

Tracking the Arch-Lich: Whether it is through simple tracking, the findings of machines or following the winds of magic, the Arch-Lich, the driving force behind the Darkness, can be tracked and hunted (You will be able to detect the vague location of the Arch Lich)

Hand-Cannons: (Requires Cannons) Recognizing the need for more formidable firepower in the face of the hideous monsters of the Darkness, engineers have been able to shrink down the Cannon into one that can be either carried manually by adapted Arquebussers, or indeed strapped onto the chassis of Mechanical Warriors (Give your Arquebussers an advantage in combat and gives Mechanical Warriors ranged capability)

Dark Magic: (Requires 3 other Divine/Elemental/Necromancy Traits) Faced by the ever adapting Darkness, desperate measures must be taken. By harnessing magics so dark that even Necromancer's dared not touch them, your nation's Magi unlock a whole plethora of ungodly powerful sorcery. (Allows to use of Dark Magic (More traits will appear of Dark Magic over time))

All over Tushienia

News of the push into Darkness held territory had spread like wildfire. For the first time in years, the darkness had lost ground on the eastern front and it was Tushienia that had lead the charge. Newspapers hyped up the event as a turning point in the war, the first step to reclaiming the northern lands and an example for their neighbors to follow. The papers also mentioned victories against the darkness far to the south, through these were not as hyped up as Tushienia's own victory. After all, there were empires in the South that were only now encountering the darkness for the first time and they had been given plenty of foresight and information on the enemy that they would be facing long before they had encountered it.
.............................................................
Out at Sea, aboard the Exiled Hope

One of the first ships to be launched off of the Tushienia shipyards, the Exiled Hope was not exactly a ship designed for battle or war. It had been created and launched for one purpose and one purpose only; To sail to the Outcast Republic and assist in the evacuation that was taking place there. The crew strongly suspected that this would be nothing more then a death run; That by the time they arrived the Darkness would have consumed the waters around the islands, if not the islands themselves but if there was even a chance that they could get one more boat full of people off the island before it was too late, it was a risk that they had to take. All they could do now was keep sailing.

.....................................................

All over Tushienia a new kind of factory came to life, built with a single purpose in mind; To constructe the mighty war machines that were the mechanical walkers as quickly as possible in order to give the armed forces of Tushienia as much variety in its forces as possible. The creation of such machines was considered a sign by many that this first victory for the nation against the darkness was going to be the first of many.

Province 19
The shadows remain on the other side. But not for long. Last time they had this long of a reprieve the monsters that had come next were unprecedented in their ferocity and had barely been driven off. Who knows what would come next? It seemed every time the enemy came back they were stronger, smarter, had some new adaption or another. Yet even now Andinon couldn't risk an attack on the darkness. There was too much at stake. They would just have to hold them back until the other nations could gather their strength for a breakthrough. Tushenia was driving into the darkness with an army that consisted of most of its military force. All Andinon had to do was keep holding out, for however long was needed. The scouting forces that had been sent out either hadn't returned or had come back with precious little information. Further attempts were dismissed, it was no good sending good pilots to their deaths. Forces were constantly sent to shore up the borders. There was little else they could do.

There was little that Eléane herself could do, as others gathered the still bleeding bodies from between the cogs and gears. The enemy was defeated, but the cost was high. Massive pyres were built all along the shore line, and those whom had fallen were each given their own. Soon the afternoon turned to dusk, and finally all the bodies had been gathered. With the twilight sun setting, the remaining War-Magi began to play their song. From the braziers, small fire familiars jumped, and crossed the beach in grace to reach the pyres. Where they nestled themselves deep within the dry wood. Immediately the piles caught fire, and thus the dead were burned. A gentle southern wind blew the ashes into the sea. As much as most tried, some could not hold back a tear. They tried to remain strong. But they had lost many friends now.

One by one the mages scattered. Returning back to their camp. Eventually, only Eléane remained. Watching the embers glowing in the midnight blackness. There was no moon nor stars to be seen today. The only light came from the red smoldering and the blue lights in the sea. When she thought that no-one could see her, Eléane collapsed onto her knees. But she was not alone.
“It’s not your fault you know.” Selina said. She was the sorceress who cast the Bright Flash. Eléane’s miracle of the past battle. “Nobody’s blaming you for what happened.”
But Eléane would not have the kind words: “I failed as a commander. And they paid the price.” She could not take her eyes off the charcoal on the beach.
“They died for their country.”
“They died because of my father!” Eléane sneered back at Selina.
“No. Your father is great, yes. But they fought for what Engelica stands for. A strong nation. Where we, mages, can live and do whatever we want. You forget, I too am a child of war. Every one of our generation is. We grew up without a father, a mother or both. We fought for New Engelica here. We fight at her borders and beyond to ensure that the people within the land don’t need to fear and cower every day.”
A long silence fell. Eventually to be broken by Eléane. “Selina. I want you to listen to me. And only listen, until I am finished.”

The following day, several mages started their rituals on the beach where they fought the specter army. Some went towards the Leviathan, or at least the rotting carcass of it. Meditating around it, to drain it from whatever dark aura it still has left.

The Tribesmen were wild and un-ordered, slipping into a berserk-like frenzy in battle, and it was this ferociousness that had won the respect of Tavirin. It had been those tribe warriors, who just seasons ago had been the Broken Empire's enemy, who had perhaps saved the nation's offensive. The magics of the Orcs, foulest Necromancy, had failed in the face of the Darkness. There had been no time to adapt another strategy, Tavirin had had to act on pure instincts, forming up the Mechanical Walkers and Warriors into a defensive line as the War-Magi struggled to control their power.

As the Darkness had smashed against the Broken Empire's lines, the danger of the line buckling under the unrelenting horde growing no matter what Tavirin did. As the situation grew more and more dire, horns of war blew across the battlefield and the wild riders of the tribes, the same warriors that had fled into the lands of the Broken Empire in the face of the oncoming Shadow, crashed into the flanks of the Darkness. Fighting with a frenzy, even the foul creatures of the Darkness fell underneath the warriors honed blades.

Invigorated by the arrival of their tribal allies, the Mechanical force of the Broken Empire, supported by the War-Magi, now wielding their Fire and newly learned Earth magic, hit hard against the Darkness, now in disarray. Shattering under the invading force, the Shadow went to run, but it had nowhere to flee, cut down wherever they turned.

As the tribes celebrated long into the night, great bonfires seeming to burn away the shadows that had encroached into the land as volatile alcohol washes away the horrors that they faced, Tavirin took a moment to step away from the celebrations.

Alone with his thoughts, the Forgelord looked out into the night. He had been foolish, the Broken Empire had relied too heavily on the Necromancy of the Orcs, and now that that magic was failing, the Empire was a shadow of it's former might. No more could the Empire be sure of the legions of undead marching in their name, now battles must be won once more by the flesh and steel that had forged the nation so many centuries ago.

Tavirin had seen the reports from across the Broken Empire, and he had felt a part of himself break down when he had seen that only a handful of the Hammerbearer's had survived the grinding conflicts that had consumed the Empire, and Alria as a whole. But that would change, in this new age, Tavirin would raise an army of great warriors that would deserve the name of the Broken Empire.

Turning back to the feasting, Tavirin was about to walk back and join the celebrations when he felt chills run down his spine and saw a dark figure also standing at the outskirts of the encampment. Recognizing Grugar'Tar, Tavirin wearily approached his ally, noticing that for the first time, the Warlock was not flanked by his Lichguard. As the Dwarf approached him, the Orc spoke.

"I was blind. We used our greatest power too often. These foul creatures adapt to whatever they face, that much is clear, we should have hidden our strengths, and now we are without Necromancy."

Tavirin was shocked, the Warlock's voice rang with an emotion that the Dwarf had never heard before in any Orc's voice, let alone one of the most powerful Warlocks. Stunned, Tavirin could barely string together a response.

"You couldn't have known"

"We did know Dwarf. We had heard rumors that this had happened to the nations in the East, but we were too proud, believing ourselves more powerful, too great to be affected by the Darkness' magics. But never again."
