Kael looks confused as the grenade sails into the vehicle, then flinches in shock as the object explodes and spreads most of the occupants over the inside of the car. Peering over a hastily upraised arm, he looks wide-eyed at the carnage, then turns to the coat fellow who'd thrown it angrily. "What the hell is wrong with you?! Please tell me you know something here that I don't, because I was really hoping to get an answer or three out of those guys!" He notices the hum in the air and the increase in heat, and looks around with worry. His ethereal sight appears in his eyes as he searches for the source, and takes some time to scan the vehicle as well.

Fortune as the man he was questioning only said the word 'Suffer' to him in return... through the fact that he might have been choking to death may have been a factor in that. Removing his foot from the man's throat, Fortune strode over to retrieve his sword while the fallen knight at least made the attempt at reclaiming his breath...

Before someone shouted 'Grenade' and the world was filled with an almighty roar that rattled the brain.

Caught off guard by just how big the shockwave was Fortune found himself on the ground, flat on his belly as he was knocked off of his feet while he was bending down to reclaim his sword. The ringing in his ears seemed to be echoing off of his helmet, Fortune reaching up to hold his head still to try and get his sense of balance back. There was some yelling, but he wasn't exactly in a proper condition to pay attention to what exactly was being said.

It also seemed to be getting warmer, but that was a trivial concern.

"At least he didn't shoot anyone," she grumbled.

She turned to see Luca charging angrily towards Donny. Thinking that a dangerous plan of action considering the man's volatile nature and the scattered bodies he had recently exorcised across the street, she threw her backpack towards the boy's legs so as to trip him. @mdk

Her aim was a quite off, as she failed to adjust for the altered gravity—it fell short of her target, only barely making contact with the boy's heel. Then again, she would normally have been unable to throw her heavy backpack at such a distance, so perhaps a small victory could be afforded.

Still, the sudden motion did no wonders for the metallic plate seared into her back. Ariett cried out in pain after the toss and promptly fell back to her knees.

‘Eeep!’ Amelie made a little startled noise as the stock collapsed, and she almost panicked that she was about to lose some fingers when she realized it was just drifting in wonky gravity. She was desperately trying to put it back in place when the car arrived and that stopped mattering. She had fled, rather than tried to do anything when the grenade was thrown. And, as she turned back after the explosion, eyes wide and breathing heavily…

'You could have stopped him, you wretched little witch.'
Amelie flinched, hearing the voice. She thought back on what had just happened, and realized she hadn’t even considered it. A shill went through her, as she thought of being blamed for what had happened.

‘I-I’m sorry…! I didn’t think he’d…! I wasn’t…! I panicked…!’ She tried to explain to the voice, feeling very uncomfortable. Amelie eyed Donny with fear, not brave enough to raise an objection like the others but definitely afraid he’d decide she was next. The cover of her cloak was gone, without it she didn’t feel as safe despite the negligible amount of protection the cloak actually gave her. She felt exposed.

… It was getting hot. Amelie felt vulnerable. She saw the boy she had previously brought back to the ground @mdk run at the gunman @Doc Doctor. ‘… Don’t do that, you’ll get killed.’ Amelie uttered as she created a Redirection Orb in between them, and if either Luca ran through it or Donny struck back, she’d turn the movement to that person’s left. So the boy could calm down when redirected so he wasn’t running at the gunman, hopefully.

After that, Amelie decided she didn’t have more to do with that, and was going to try to recover the guy who was blown away. She’d attempt to create a new Redirection Orb, dropping the previous one, to get the guy to drift back down to the ground. Still holding the submachine gun as she hopefully managed to redirect him down towards the ground, she’d ask a few questions.

‘Why did you come here? … Why did WE come here?’ She asked, hoping this wasn’t just an elaborate trick of Penny’s, but it could be. Everything seemed pretty magic… That is, she only would ask the questions if she was actually able to pull him back down. Otherwise, she’d just lament her inability to make a difference.

Donny rolled onto his back with his arms extended, knees bent, and feet planted, facing Luca. His right hand overlapped the left in a position that a fan of Dragon Ball Z might recognize as being a part of Cell's pose, though judging by the dark glimmer of the hitman's eyes, anybody who got close to those hands wouldn't spend their last moments thinking about cartoons. If Luca looked closely, he'd perhaps be able to vaguely make out black ring or band of some sort on Donny's thumb, though it'd be shaded against the similarly black leather gloves. Either way the ring hadn't been there before, though why this would be of concern was still up for grabs. That is to say, if it was to be of any sort of concern at all in the first place.

Oh, there was no reason to be jerking about in the hedges. The ring had been on the face of his watch, and when pulled out it trailed with it a length of tightly wound microfilament garrote wire. Anything that fell into Donny's grasp was liable to be julienned into steak strips. Even without that knowledge, Luca had plenty of time to realize that he was rushing towards a man whose kill count had gone up by at least five people in the last two minutes.

@Holmishire

Ariett's chucked backpack registered on some level of Luca's mind, though it was only a glancing contact and it didn't really slow him down. He hardly would have taken note at all, but for the soft-scream that accompanied it. Damn it, he thought. That's his fault, too!

It wasn't. If Luca had been thinking clearly, he would have realized that Donny had only acted to protect himself, and by association the rest of the occupants of the vehicle. If it hadn't been for Donny, they all might be dead. Luca wasn't thinking clearly, so he didn't think any of these things. Instead, he thought grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr or something along those lines. In the vastly-superior future civilization from which Luca came, great thinkers, psychologists, brain-wave scientists and the like had termed these sorts of thoughts "freaking the fuck out." Such a concept, alien though it may have seemed to the primitives in the modern era, described Luca's mental state perfectly. He charged on.

@platinumskink

Amelie had a bit more luck slowing the wild idiot's progress, but only a little. His sprint turned abruptly to the left, so that, without losing momentum or balance, he was suddenly running towards (and punching blindly at) a wall. He stopped short of actually striking said wall, bewildered. How in the hell...... THIS IS HIS FAULT TOO! GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...... Luca wheeled back around and ran at Donny anew.

@Doc Doctor

From this new angle of approach, Luca could actually see the glint of the garrote wire a little better than when he was running head-on. Not that he recognized it as a garrote wire, per se -- more of a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. A dangerous grrrrrr to be sure, but still just a grrrrrrrrrrr. He launched himself at the hitman and threw a mighty punch.

In the end, it was his own error that spared him from the wire. He ought to have known better than to initiate a leap in hazardous gravity conditions. His momentum carried him over the red-headed object of his rage, and face-first into the twisted roof of the blown-out Royce. He ricocheted off it with a metallic clunk, made louder by his own metal componentry, and settled into a nearly-stationary zero-g hover. As luck would have it, this all occurred right over the hitman's prone and ready position.

Luca took another swing. He was too far away to reach. He took a second airborne swing just to confirm that he was out of range, then he tried (and failed) to swim his way over through the atmosphere. When at last it was clear that his efforts to inflict pain on the ginger were entirely futile, he let his arms drop. They floated instead, at awkward angles, but this was normal to Luca. "Dude, please stop killing everybody we meet." His voice was remarkably calm -- perhaps that whack on the head had done him some good. In his mind, some of the muted growling had dulled, and a new thought filled in the absence: be cool, be cool, be cool or he will cut you in half with his pinky.

He notices the hum in the air and the increase in heat, and looks around with worry. His ethereal sight appears in his eyes as he searches for the source, and takes some time to scan the vehicle as well.

He saw nothing more than he had before. The strange, brass-colored wheeled carriage had a very faint magical source somewhere within its interior, but whatever it might have been was barely worthy of notice.

After an exasperated sigh he looked at the sky, at least it was getting warm now. Quite warm, to be honest. And pretty fast too.

He looked up to see a strange, bronze-colored corona of dull light tearing down through the sky towards the intersection. The light it emitted was very faint - if the sky had still not been faintly grayed from dawn, it would have been nearly impossible to pick out against the sky's natural saturation. There seemed to be an object - make that two small objects - held within the corona. Tall vertical shapes, with narrow gaps at their bases - almost humanoid in appearance -

The corona of light slammed directly into the intersection, missing the levitating traffic sphere by only a meter at best. A tremendous wave of pressure and heat rolled over Andreas, forcing him onto his stomach as though he had been picked up by an invisible tsunami that had then sucked him under and roughly shoved him up against the ocean floor. At almost exactly the same time, everyone else in the surrounding vicinity was likewise forced to the ground by the exact same wave of pressure. The air was positively stiffing with heat, rife with the fumes of heavily baked cobblestone.

He ricocheted off it with a metallic clunk, made louder by his own metal componentry, and settled into a nearly-stationary zero-g hover. As luck would have it, this all occurred right over the hitman's prone and ready position.

Luca, as with everyone else, was rolled over by the pressure wave and flung directly downwards - into Donny, who had been similarly affected. Not a ways too far from them, the red-suited man with the rebar face who had been about to float over the crest of the building adjacent the sidewalk abruptly crashed down onto the roof, rolling off of it and falling nearly three meters to the hard stone paving.

A scant moment later, the immense pressure that had forced everyone to the ground subsided and vanished, restoring freedom of movement. The air around ground-level was now wavering intensely with sweltering heat, which was rising and dissipating rapidly.

"NNPD, everybody stay down and put your hands on your head! The innocent have nothing to fear!" Barked a harsh, feminine voice, tinged with a metallic echo. "But if you want to wind up as tinsel fodder, go ahead and try to go for that amazing pushup set you've always wanted to do. See how far you get."

The speaker was yet another knight, fully decked out in black-painted platemail with golden trimming. A crest displaying an eagle emblazoned upon a coat of arms was prominently displayed over the woman's breast, and she carried a large pavise-shield depicting a pair of scales balancing gruesome, shackled men against a blindfolded angelic figure. A second knight with likewise adornment stood next to her, though he had drawn an intimidating, black-hued compound crossbow already loaded with a small, cylinder-tipped bolt. The cylinder was much smaller and different in design than the one the subdued crossbowman had attempted to use, but presumably had similar capabilities. Both of the figures stood within a ring of neatly scorched cobblestone, a faint trace of glassy fulgerite having been burnt into the road around where they stood.

@Doc Doctor
Notably, the design of the newcomers' armor was a class apart from that of the errant crossbowman. It appeared to be lighter, with smaller plates, more scaling, and less overall coverage across the body - which was still entirely enshrouded in chainmail nonetheless. Most notably though, rather than possessing traditional visored slits their helmets were wholly translucent lids rendered from some plastic material that wholly exposing their faces. The police woman - knight? - muttered a brief comment to her partner before turning and stalking towards the tripod-mounted spike still entrenched underneath the levitating traffic sphere. The man gave everyone littered across the street a cursory glance, until he reached Fortune and the fallen crossbowman - whose presence appeared to startled him...

Directly behind Luca and Donny, the red-suited man - who clearly possessed extraordinary vigor - began to push himself back up onto his feet in clear violation of the woman's order, grunting in pain as he did so. His movement caused a rolling surge of wavering heat to spread, shimmering heated air rising faster about him and creating small eddies in the process.

Andy stared at what was coming down. Moments later it slammed into the ground and the pressure wave threw him on the ground. He coughed as the impact forced the air out of his lungs, took in a breath of the hot air and groaned. "What the..." he muttered when he heard a harsh, feminine voice. He turned his head so he could look at the speaker.

The innocent had nothing to fear, that was good news, that was exactly what he was. He just hoped the agent or knight of NNPD would think the same. He remained on the ground as instructed, going against the people with the weapons was rarely a good idea, especially since there was no reason to assume they would kill him. He turned his head to look at everyone else, to make out if they were still alive. Hopefully the red-haired gunman would be smart enough to refrain from killing official law-enforcement. Andy sighed, did it even matter? At this point he was just glad the man hadn't tried to kill him yet. He noticed how the red-suited man got up. Judging from what happened it was a bad idea to ignore the instruction of the female cop or knight or whatever the title was they gave themselves.

"When can we get up again?" he asked. "The streets of New Nemea are very comfortable, but I am a little thirsty now."

Ariett placed her left hand on the back of her head, but found herself unable to move her right arm into such a position due to her injury. Instead, she splayed the arm out and put her right hand palm-down on the cobblestone.

"Hello, officers? I'm the one who called you, I can explain as much as I can after you get us out of here." She spat out some of the dirt that had covered her face after the shockwave. "Most of us are unarmed. Just be careful dealing with the redhead, he's a bit trigger-happy and I don't want another accidental shootout."

Donny spread his legs and arms out, the wire subtly coiling back into its hiding place as the ring slipped from his thumb. Were these to be any common officers, Donny would have wasted them on the spot. They appeared to have unusual powers and gear, however, and as long as they seemed willing to take everyone alive, Donny saw no reason to act with foolish haste. The fancy Vector was a few feet away from him, still leaning against the wall where he had left it. Perhaps if the officers were distracted Donny could take them, but that was a most unlikely possibility considering how Ariett had so kindly referred to him as "trigger-happy". It was a good thing Donny was prepared for virtually any situation. When he addressed the cops, it was with a perfectly trim, handsome voice entirely unsoiled by any form of accent. His proclamation was impatient, indignant, just what one would expect from someone high up on the legal food chain.

"Now listen, I'm a police inspector. Did you hear me?? Just check the inside of my coat, on the left. I've been commissioned by two governors in cooperation to investigate strange goings-on in this particular area. Already I've been forced to take more aggressive action today than I've ever had to during the last ten years of my career, so I'd appreciate it if I didn't have to spend the rest of this long, ridiculous day on the ground!!"

Of course he really did have a police inspector badge complete with a false name pinned to the underside of his overcoat, and if they had a method of running the I.D's numbers, they'd find that it checked out nicely. Police were methodical, not likely to take things at face value like in the movies. That was why Donny's badge was linked to the profile of an actual inspector. It paid to have people on the inside, especially when it was so simple a matter to duplicate the badge of some unsuspecting Callahan.

Amelie was forced down onto the ground, onto her back, just like the others. She gasped out when the force grabbed her, and she felt the blistering heat through her shirt. It was too hot, even if it was through her shirt. Why was the cobblestone so hot!? She wanted up on her shoes as quickly as possible…!

… But if she did, the police officer would do… whatever it meant to become “tinsel fodder”. That was definite. But, did she REALLY want to trust the words of ANYONE in a dimension which Penny had sent her to die in? … Not really. Then again, it wasn’t as if she could get away from the law enforcement if she stood up. Definitely dying VS maybe dying? … She could hopefully put up with some heat.

With shaking hands, she placed the submachine-gun she had been clutching aside on the ground and put her hands on her head, quivering a bit in the occasional heat and hoping this would be over soon. She kept her eyes looking at the police so she could quickly raise a Redirection Orb if things went south. Hopefully, negotiations would go well.

‘… Keh…’ She left the negotiating to the adults, Amelie did not feel confident in her authority should she had spoken up. She just had to bear with the heat, while staying ready to act at any moment’s notice…!

Luca wasted no time in doing exactly as he was instructed. His sudden collision with Donny had not resulted in immediate death, and the gunman had even spoken -- coherently, no less -- without shooting anybody first. Luca was chalking all of these things up in the 'win' column, whether they had anything to do with his outburst or not.

He took no preparatory posture, nor did he announce himself to the authorities, nor demand any information from them. He didn't so much as glance up at the newly-arrived authority figures. He simply placed his hands in the appropriate position and lay perfectly, precisely motionless. Except for the ticking, he made no sound at all -- an observer might even wonder if he was breathing. He wasn't, at least, not in the traditional sense -- but then the only person near enough to notice would have been Donny. Probably. Some of the others certainly seemed perceptive, so who could say?

"When can we get up again?" he asked. "The streets of New Nemea are very comfortable, but I am a little thirsty now."

"Shut up." The male knight with the pavise said absent-mindedly as he turned his body and began to approach both Fortune and the fallen crossbowman. The female officer had approached the tripod and rooted her pavise on the street behind her while she worked on the circuitry at the tripod's base, and appeared content to let her partner manage the scene.

Already I've been forced to take more aggressive action today than I've ever had to during the last ten years of my career, so I'd appreciate it if I didn't have to spend the rest of this long, ridiculous day on the ground!!"

@Bright_Ops
"You're lucky that you aren't going to spend the rest of your short life in an oubliette, 'inspector.'" The male knight responded flatly as he approached Fortune and the crossbowman. He set his pavise into the ground a ways in front of them and gripped the stock of his compound crossbow with both hands - paying little attention to Donny save the brief offhand comment he had just uttered. "Alright. Which one of you two jokers is Fortune De Vigny?"

Which was when he spotted the red-suited man with the face reminiscent of rebar, who had staggered his way up to both of his feet. It was at that precise moment that reality decided to break at the seams some more.

@Doc Doctor
If Donny noticed the man rising behind him and moved at all, the rebar-faced man reveals a small holdout pistol from up his left sleeve and shoots him in the back of the head with a military burst of speed far too fast for Amelie to react to, accompanied by immaculate, laser-accuracy - and Donny's head is instantly enveloped in a suffocating and almost assuredly lethal metallic burial mask.

@mdk
If Donny noticed the man rising behind him and did not move at all, the rebar-faced man begins to hurriedly shout at the male knight. If Fortune did not answer the man's question before the red-suited man begins to speak, the pavise knight lazily aims his crossbow at the red-suited man and fires its bolt - shredding the rebar-faced man's entire body with a shotgun-like blast of shrapnel, silvery metal spreading from each point of contact that transform the unfortunate target into glimmering silver statuary in under a second. It then tips over in the air and begins to very slowly drift downwards to gently fall on Luca's back while a thousand jutting spines of silver metal begin to erupt from every inch of its surface - if Amelie fails to deflect the bolt.

If Fortune answered the man's question before the red-suited man begins to speak, he promptly launches into a tirade. "Officer, this red-haired oaf is not an inspector! He is Donovan Booth, and he is on both the FBI's most wanted list as well as the Turquoise Charter! He is responsible for that mess with the limousine, and he attacked me and my companions as we drove closer to assist! He is responsible for the deaths of nearly every single corpse you see here!"

The female knight finished fiddling with the tripod's rudimentary circuitry and rose back to her feet before idly kicking the tripod stand over with a hefty bash from the side of her right greave, sending the mounted spike toppling over onto the concrete with a tremendous metallic bang. If the red-suited man was still alive, an enormous, blinding bolt of lightning instantly leaps from the levitating traffic sphere and envelops his body, reducing him to a mass of rapidly flash-vaporizing, champagne-colored slop and ashes that float and drift eerily in the distorted gravity.

@Cruallassar
If the red-suited man was already dead and if either Donny or Kael tried to raise their bodies more than two feet above the ground, an enormous, blinding bolt of lightning instantly leaps from the levitating traffic sphere and envelopes their body, reducing whichever one rose first to a mass of rapidly flash-vaporizing, champagne-colored slop and ashes that float and drift eerily in the distorted gravity. The levitating sphere crackles with static power and emits an ominous hum that rapidly rises in intensity, but does not fire off a second bolt at whoever rises second if one of them does so.

If Amelie tried to stop the levitating sphere from discharging at any time using her redirection orb, the immense surge of power wildly erupts in every direction at once, far beyond her ability to contain, and sends countless jittering arcs of electricity in every direction. Most discharge harmlessly into the ground - but several strike out at every individual laying on the ground, as well as the two pavise knights and the man in red if he was still alive.

If Fortune had not yet responded to the male pavise knight's question, the fallen crossbow knight answers instead in a cracked and pained voice, accentuated with a dread gurgle of blood and phlegm. "I am De Vigny." He says, and the pavise knight nods simply and begins to reload the crossbow he just used to kill the red-suited man.

If ifs proceed in a manner conducive to such actions, Kael will not be moving at all, having a healthy respect for people having a literal drop on him. Bows aren't easy weapons to fire from a prone position, and unlike certain people present...and his absent master, possibly...Kael doesn't have the reflex to kill anyone who gets in his way, especially someone who seems more like an ally, all things considered. Or rather, murderous companions considered. Maybe these people will be able to give him some answers. He remains in an assumedly safe prone position, shifting his bow to the side and his hand away from it so as to try and look compliant. He had done his fair share of evading authorities before, and he tried to make it a point to give up and try talking long before the situation devolved to this point.

Donny noticed the Red Suit all right, but he remained still and cooperative. He wanted to see what would happen to the one that defied the law. From the demeanor of the cops, Donny was able to determine a number of probable factors. Their organization was likely independent from the rest of the country, and said organization must have not cared much for liability issues. That either meant they were extremely good at keeping situations under control, or much more likely, were too oppressive to file a lawsuit against. Donny thought back to the time he had watched Judge Dread when it came out in theaters. This situation seemed very similar to one he had witnessed in the film. Officers like these could be authorized to act out the role of judge, jury, and executioner. The only difference was that these law dogs were arrogant and apparently quite heedless of protocol outside of ordering everyone to the ground. Little discipline, heavy firepower. Even as his act was ordered into submission, Donny's reptilian mind had already figured out a plan. Lay low for now, see if they had any more tricks. He hoped they would take him in, lead him into their base of operations so to speak. Who knew what kind of weaponry they had stockpiled, what kinds of information their database held? He might even be able to locate the assholes behind this whole mess. As for the possibility of being permanently detained... Donny had little fear. Despite the fancy weapons and transportation, Donny felt more like he was being arrested by a couple of backwoods blues who spent most of their time talking trash to drunk rednecks. Advanced technology couldn't accommodate the inexperienced standards he suspected they followed. People like these made mistakes, and Donny needed only one mistake to take advantage of.

Luca, too, remained motionless.His mind was racing like Donny's, but he was thinking about all the wrong things -- I am in so much trouble, oh my god why is this happening to me, what did I do to deserve this, and so on. Thoughts of no utility to the group and no consequence to the scene playing out. The dangerous folks were scary, and Luca was scared, and that was about the size of it. He didn't move a millimeter.

With a small grunt, Fortune raised his head and simply answered "I am Fortune De Vigny." He felt battered and bruised and quite frankly he had been tired of this whole damn mess from the start. Glancing over as he heard another gun shot, he looked on with indifference at the situation befalling the idiot who had simply gone out of his way to murder everyone and everything around him; He had honestly considered striking the man down himself at the first opportunity for the good of... well, everyone.

Pushing himself off of the ground slowly while struggling a little with the weight of his armor while grabbing his sword in the process, he made to at least make the effort to stand tall and face whatever was about to come.

Andy sighed after the 'kind request' to shut up. Humor and law-enforcers, it was a rare combination. He remained silent as he listened, he wasn't sure why this Fortune De Vigny was important for them or who it was. It could be one of the others he had shared the limo with, but he honestly had no idea how any of them were called. After their driver got shot they didn't have any chances to exchange introductions and pleasantries.

He heard one of the passengers from the limousine, well, former passengers, claim the name. At least that was sorted. Whatever these people wanted from him would soon become apparent. And maybe he would be allowed to ask some questions as well, with the NNPD here he was certain he could learn more about his patient.

As the red-suited man is still alive, an enormous, blinding bolt of lightning instantly leapt from the levitating traffic sphere and enveloped his body, reducing him to a mass of rapidly flash-vaporizing, champagne-colored slop and ashes that float and drift eerily in the distorted gravity.
What actually happened, then

Amelie kept still, looking at the scene that was taking place. One of the officers… really strange officers, asked for a Fortune De Vigny. Turned out to be one of them. The knight, specifically. Huh. The man in a red-suit then started yelling about the red-haired man… calling him Donovan Booth. After the things that Amelie had just seen him do, she made better to believe the man than anything else.

Then the woman kicked the tripod and a lightning-blast too unexpected for Amelie to react to suddenly blasted the man to ashes. Amelie flinched in place, trying to recover from the terror of just having seen another man gruesomely die before her. S-so… That tripod had been for their own protection. What were the rules? How did the lightning decide who to strike? The police were both in armor. Was that more to defend against the lightning than anything else? She hoped she wasn’t making a terrible mistake, lying here without protection from such energy. But, it looked like she yet lived.

Fortune started moving to stand up. Amelie’s eyes focused on him, figuring that if any of them was going to suffer the consequences it would be him. She got ready to summon a Redirection Orb to block a sudden lightning-strike or potentially an attack from the police against him. … Granted, he was wearing armor that could defend him, maybe? But just in case. Amelie was ready to attempt redirecting an attack from any direction aimed at him, hopefully in a direction where nobody was. … And, also maybe to defend herself, if something tried to kill her. Maybe.

Herself, except for moving her head with wide eyes to keep full attention of what was going on in case a Redirection Orb was needed, lay down with hands on her head. She felt terrified. What was going to happen now…?
