The Yellow Hood Trial

The Yellow Hood Trial is coming...

All of this will be explained in further detail in IC, but I wanted to get you all prepped ahead of time while we wait for people to finish up their posts.

Players will be broken up into groups of equal size who will take on the trial separate from the other groups. Each group will be facing an opponent with a unique weakness. The opponent fighting Group 1 might die by fire while the opponent fighting Group 2 must have its heart destroyed. Its up to you to figure out how to succeed.

Oh, and these opponents fight back and you will not be able to control the outcome of their attacks.

Think of this like an old school RPG like Final Fantasy. Each player will rotate turns, but after each player's turn, the opponent gets a turn. Your goal is to use your turn as wisely as possible to find and exploit the opponent's weakness. If you guess wrong, the opponent is going to make you pay for it.

If you don't work together to figure out how to succeed, you might die.

This type of thing takes collaboration and we're obviously not all on the same schedules. Because of that, I think the best way to do this would be Group PMs on the forum that I will then get posted once the confrontation is complete. If I have inadvertently made the weakness too difficult to figure out, I'll drop a hint.

During the rotation, if you would like to use your turn to exclusively talk to your teammates (and not commit an action) that's fine. The opponent will not attack until you attack. That said, you can only do a "Talk" rotation once before having to commit to an action.

Example

P2's turn to act

P2: Should I light it on fire? [Talking Turn]
P3: I don't think it's a good idea.
P4: Do it
P1: Maybe just stab it...

P2: *attempt to light opponent on fire* [Forced Action Turn]
Opponent reacts

Then it becomes Player 3's turn to act, where s/he can decide if they want to talk again or if they just want to go straight to the action. I will be there guiding the fights for each group, so if this seems a little confusing on paper, I assure you it will be much simply in action.

Each time a particular player gets attacked by the opponent, the consequences will get exponentially worse. If Player 1 gets attacked the first time, not too bad. Second time's gonna smart. Third time is really going to hurt and the Fourth time and beyond might get grim.

This roundabout routine is specific to this trial and is not something we will be doing for future fights, but getting into the Red Hoods isn't easy and all your characters are about to find that out the hard way.

Good luck!

@Marrok
During our turns in this trial, can we search for weaknesses in the enemy? Maybe in like an "Observational Turn" or something?

@ZAVAZggg I get the feeling that that kinda thing will be more implied - y'know in descriptions and stuff, kinda like
'the giant-ass monster keeps a paw held to its chest' for a heart weakness or 'The monster lets out a deafening roar at the strike of Eliza's fire bottle' for fire weakness kinda thing

Also, dude, get on the discord :P

Yeah, you're right. And, no discord. I'm on a phone using 4G mobile data and Discord is slow AF when I acess it this way. (No I do not have a PC or internet yet, so I'm stuck with a phone).

Quick question about my character, am I RPing him alright? Like have I done things that seem to be out of character for him, etc, or am I doing okay? Just asking in order to avoid a Gary Stu/Mary Sue type character.

@ZAVAZggg I think you're doing fine so far, don't worry :) I get the feeling, not just from what you've just said, but from other things too, that it might help you to relax a bit more about your writing in general tbh - personally I always find that my best sort of 'raw prose' if you will comes when I really get into yhe flow of things - a lot of the time I'll even delete the first parargraph I write because I was trying too hard when I wrote it. It's perfectly normal to worry about your writing, but honestly, the less you do, the faster you'll improve, and the more fun you'll have doing it - and isn't that ultimately what we're all here for? Your posts are readable (not just readable, they're really good :)) which honestly, is the only technical aspect that tends to hinder my enjoyment of a post - if I have to squint to be able to understand what's going on. Which I don't with you, so in my book, you're doing great :)

That said, if you're worried a character you're making may be a mary/gary stu, try googling the 'mary sue litmus test'and it should give you a rough guideline. Also, I kmow a few writing resources that have really helped me improve my writing, if you're interested, feel free to PM me!

Okay and thanks for the feedback. To be completely honest the reason I obsess over my writing is because I keep comparing it to the works of already successful writers. I know that's a stupid thing to do because they've been writing for years, but sometimes I just can't help myself.

@ZAVAZggg You're welcome :) Everyone does it - don't worry :P I don't think I've ever met a writer who doesn't get really critical of their own work, it's more than normal, to the point where I'd be concerned if I met a writer (especially a less experienced writer) who wasn't crazy self critical. Another super important thing to remember with published works is that often, these things have gone through tens of drafts, been poured over by whole teams of editers, and often sent out to readers in advance ofnpublishing to spot any remaining mistakes. It's like the difference between a proffessiomally produced tv show, and a web series on YouTube produced by a bunch of kids and filmed on one of their phones - the two just aren't starting from the same place.

Well, I looked at a short list of traits a Mary Sue character has and Vitius doesn't seem to fit most of them, but I'll take the universal test to be sure.

Edit: Got to question 15 in the test when I realized that he's not a Gary Stu. Well not in this case anyway. He has his flaws just like anyone else, human or otherwise. And he isn't good at everything, like making art for example, or diplomacy since he's used to fighting rather than talking.

@ZAVAZggg He didn't really strike me as a gary stu to be honest, but I figured I'd suggest the test because you seemed worried :)

So far, from the great writing and interactions I have seen, I don't think anyones characters are.

Oh and if anyone wants to collab with me, then start a PM with me (and whoever else) so we can actually do the collab and I'll post it into the IC.

Would probably be fun to do a collab between Colin and Vitius at some point :D Probably not feasible rn, but deffo would be interested to if they both survive the trial :D

Cool, it would be interesting to see how they get along. Maybe Vitius can even help Colin overcome his fear of vampires by showing him that not all of them are necessarily evil.

Anyway, in regards to the post I said I was working on earlier, well I should tell you all that I'm still considering writing it as I'm not sure if a brief flashback will add much to the overall scene.

I mean... he could try? Colin's pretty set in his ways - and for a very specific (as of yet undisclosed) reason. I mean, a not insignificant part of it is nearly being killed by vampires on multiple occasions, but that's not the whole story ;)

True, there is that quote, but Marrok could have just waxed a bit poetic with his description of vampires. Now if he actually says that they aren't undead but something else, which would mean making up a whole new origin story for how vampirisim began in this RP, then I'll stop referring to them as corpses.

Until then, Vitius is a walking corpse.
