ᴇ ʙ ɪ ꜱ ᴀ ᴡ ᴀ ʜ ᴏ ɴ ᴀ ᴍ ɪ

Location: Unknown Shrine, Unknown Forest
Timeframe: Dawn

Of course someone like Honami would choose the lazier option. "Then one of us can go look around," Honami replied, though it was more than clear she had been inferring that Kaito should be the one to go look, given he had suggested it. "I'll stick around here, maybe see if I can find something while we get a hold of our surroundings. A map or something might be laying around; shrines like these are usually tourist traps, anyway."

That being said, Honami doubted she'd find a map in this mess. Excluding the fallen tree branch, the shrine was rather empty. At least it beat spending the extra energy wandering aimlessly around, looking for some town that probably didn't exist.

As Honami began to poke about in the mess of cobwebs, however, a shrill scream echoed in the distance, seemingly not far. Kaito probably stepped in animal droppings or had been startled by some kind of bug, she figured. Then again, the sudden scream was rather feminine, perhaps belonging to a girl, but at the same time, Kaito was the epitome of feminine. Muted and gentle clothes, soft hair tucked into a ponytail—were it not for his height, Kaito could've probably easily passed for a girl.

“Get away from me!”

A light bulb went off in Honami's head. "That's not Kaito." She said, looking to Hiroko, whom Honami chose to leave to her own doings. Without saying anything else, Honami left in a blur with haste as she sought to find where the screaming had been coming from. She hadn't been keen on playing hero, but maybe the person was lost, just like they were.

Maybe she was their ticket out of this forest.

Shrine in the Forest - ???
Hiroko looked over to Kaito as he suggested going forth to explore some more. It would be a good idea but the idea of some form of safety from even a crumbling structure like the shrine was tempting. However, Honami wanted to stay and look around some more for anything that might be of interest - which was highly unlikely of course.

"Just yell if you need any help. I'll keep an eye on Honami here. Stay close." She reminded him as he exited the shrine. Giving Honami a nod, Hiroko had idled away near the entrance just in case Kaito would need their help. She was fidgeting with her lighter for a quick moment, flipping it over while opening and closing it. She didn't want to waste any of her lighter fluid needlessly.

Every hair on her body stood up in alert when the scream echoed to them.

“Get away from me!”

"It isn't." Hiroko agreed as she bolted out of the shrine as soon as she said that. There was another person in the forest with them and it would be for the best if they get a guide. Hopefully, she wasn't panicking because of Kaito or something. Kaito seemed to be a mild mannered person after all and he didn't seem like the type of person who would induce such a reaction.

Hopefully, they'd be able to help and whoever this mystery woman would be willing to help them out too.

Unknown Forest

Kaito's worries gradually melted away with the heat as the faint sight of a village came into view. He let out a small sigh of relief, the kind that usually punctuated beating a puzzle or game. Assuming that a shrine would entail civilization had been the correct, rational move to play. As he trudged through the unknown forest the familiar satisfaction of approaching a solution sparked within him. Something was off, however. Another feeling was growing, one he couldn't quite pin down. It was as if his heart knew something that he didn't.

A shrill cry tore through his thoughts.

"Uegh?!" He responded. It was a cross between a shriek and gasp, suppressed before it could reach its full volume. He didn't want to be even more distrusted by his little group. Kaito gathered his scattered thoughts and stored them away as if they were the notes in his arms, and responded to the woman with the voice of a professional. "Yes?! Do you need any help?!"

His eyes darted around for signs of the source of noise. Seeing that the others had already taken off, he joined them. Had another person been caught up in this inexplicable mess? Just how much more confusing will this get for me? he whined to himself. This was definitely something above his level of expertise.

The wild woods of Tarashima were treacherous, but upon the arrival of certain elements they had become more-and-more dangerous. The purple-haired woman had thought she could brave it, all in the name of her religion. The gods had bluntly explained to her why that was not the case.

When she screamed out for help, she had been running for several minutes. She presumed it would be a worthless thing, to scream for help in a expanse like Tarashima, but she still did so. She was only surprised when she heard voices call out to her just beyond the brush. After all, unlike the three strangers in the jagged wilderness with her she happened to know her particular predicament. Much like her surprise with those who were chasing her and the voices in the woods, she found herself also surprised as she inadvertently tackled a young girl bearing the strangest clothes she had ever seen. However, being in a state of panic did not make her question such things.

As the purple-haired girl scrambled off the person she had essentially tackled to the ground, she couldn't help but stammer.

“Hurry! They're c-coming!”

"Hey, Kai- ACK!"

Honami may have had an impressive reaction time owing to her video game aptitude, but nonetheless, she still had been taken by surprise. Her feet kicked upwards as the rest of her body fell backwards, hitting the forest floor as the girl who had tacked Honami fell upon her in a rather cliche fashion common in many anime.

"W-What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Honami groaned, and shoved the girl off of her. Perhaps it was harsh to be so rough, especially if the girl had been in the same situation as they had been, but what friendliness Honami had was beginning to fade. Being dumped in an unknown forest was already souring her mood, and yet now Honami had to deal with a dimwitted moron that had been blind enough to run into one of the likely few people that were probably in the forest. "Watch where you're going, baka. Or, do you need glasses to see, since you can't seem to see the one of the few things that isn't a tree?"

Whoever this girl was, however, she hadn't seemed interested in apologizing in the slightest, instead rambling on about whatever must've been chasing her, as well begging the trio to hurry. Honami, though, was disinterested in hearing her pleas, being rather suspicious of the act the girl was putting on. For all they knew, this could be just another prank. Perhaps even the girl had been the one who dragged them all out into the forest!

"Hold on," Honami replied, albeit cranky and unamused. "Who is coming? I'm not about to go on some wild goose chase to god knows where."

Forest - ???
Hiroko skidded to a stop when someone barreled right into Honami. The impact had sent them sprawling onto the ground. She narrowed her eyes at the stranger who seemed rather frantic - or rather, she was most likely the one they had heard scream earlier. She took a moment to take in what the girl looked like. She was wearing some odd garb that she's only seen a bunch of cosplayers wear around when there was convention going on - or when they're doing some photoshoots or whatnot. Hey, Hiroko didn't judge. In her part of Japan, those weren't rare and if that made them happy, then so be it.

Hiroko was thrown back from her thoughts when Honami had pushed the girl off of her but the mystery girl seemed unfazed, frantically talking about how they're coming and that they should hurry. Hurry and do what? Honami had blown a fuse - which was certainly understandable considering what had happened and the building stress due to their unknown location - and was going off at the girl.

She moved to Honami and extended a hand to help her up, letting out an - "Are you okay?" - as she did so. Hiroko was sure that the girl was just too frantic to put any attention to them, hence the lack of apology and the start of the incident in the first place. She has crossed paths with many people who are like these. When someone is too focused on what they wanted to do that they forget everyone else around them.

Hiroko raised her head to look at the girl. "If you can calm down and explain to us what you're saying, then maybe we can be of more help." Hiroko tried to seem as accommodating as possible, opposite to Honami's disgruntled questions so that maybe they would actually get a straight answer. And maybe an answer to where exactly they were.

Location: Tarashima Forest -- Ipharia's Camp

As the two girls got to their feet, Ipharia remained utterly terrifed, for it was she who understood what was beyond the wood. She was low on energy, but at least she found others even if they were unarmed.

“We h-have to hide! We can't s-s-stay still!”

Before any of the three strangers could address something, a loud screech came through the woods, followed soon by inhuman chattering. It was hard to decipher, but if they listened closely soon the distorted noise became filtered into a language they were familiar with—as if it jumped from something indiscernible to their native Japanese. The tone was still coarse and brutish. But the words were simple. “Boys, we’re going to have fun with this one!” followed by innate, schoolyard-like cheers.

Any further listening would be cut out by the sound of a string pulling back and the sight of several arrows flinging themselves into the brush around them, barely missing the three and hitting the trees nearest to them instead.

Unknown Forest
Kaito was last to join the group once more, jogging towards them with a lanky pair of legs that hadn't received proper exercising in years. His arms, crossed and currently carrying a mess of journals, did nothing to help him navigate the uneven terrain. He stifled whatever noises his body wanted to make in protest and tried to switch to the mindset of a professional again. It was harder than before, considering the fourth person and their bizarre appearance.

They'd stand a better chance at getting her to open up if he kept his questions short and his tone steady. "Hide? Why?" he asked.

His soft eyes rested on her, and for a brief moment Kaito felt as if he stood a chance at steering the conflict towards the same uneasy peace as before. Until the cheering started. It was hard to tell what those unknown voices were shouting, but it was obvious they didn't mean well.

His mouth twitched and his feet spun as he clamored to keep it together and get out of there. An arrow struck the grass deep near his feet sending him crashing on his rear in panic. Around him more began to fall, each piercing the skin of the trees and earth with ease.

He had to be strong, he knew that. Right now though, being strong meant not dying. He threw his body at a thick tree near him and collapsed in a heap of long limbs. "Hide!" he shouted, with none of the grace he had exhibited before.

Taking Hiroko's hand, Honami stood up from the ground. At least someone here was being helpful, unlike Kaito or the girl that had knocked her down to begin with. Speaking of which, the latter still hadn't answered her questions.

"Listen, I told you I wasn't about to ru-" Honami snapped, soon interrupted by a shrill screech and school-like cheering. Certainly, this had to be a prank, or even a game show. A group of idiots (not including herself, of course) are thrown into the middle of nowhere, only to be started by "spooky sounds". Yeah, that was it!

When the arrows began to rain down upon the group, however, Honami quickly realized that, despite her intelligence, there were times when she should probably not question things so much. Ducking behind a tree, Honami narrowly escaped an arrow that had nearly caught her off guard. This was no longer a game or a prank like Honami had previously thought; this was life or death. And Honami preferred being on the "living" side of things.

"Shinjimae!" Honami shouted, clearly pissed off by being shot at with arrows. Picking a decently sized stone, Honami waited until the last of the arrows hit the ground before temporarily breaking cover to chuck the rock as hard as she could into the brush. With luck, maybe it would scare off the asshole, or at least show them that they weren't going to down so easily.

Forest - ???
The former waitress gave Honami a tight lipped smile as she pulled her up and then looked over to the mysterious girl as she continued her rambling. She wanted for them to hide. Much like the others, Hiroko didn't quite understand why. Was there some sort of animal that was hunting her down? Hiding wouldn't quite help now would it? And perhaps Hiroko wished for that to simply be the case. That it was only some forest animal. Because the cheers were not very comforting. It was like the jeering of some perverts in some back alley.

That was until the arrows started piercing their surroundings. The rush of adrenaline was probably the only thing that kept her alive as she ducked down behind a tree, much like the others as Kaito yelled for them to hide, and had narrowly avoided being a human pincushion. Calm down. Breathe. You've never been in a life or death situation before but you can manage if you can just stay calm. Hiroko repeated it to herself over and over until her breath started to even out. That was when Honami shouted and picked up a rock.

As she chucked out the rock with what seems to be all the anger in her heart, Hiroko moved to grab the nearest arrow and pulled it out of the ground. Hey, she might as well grab something to defend herself with if these archers decide to show their faces after realizing shooting arrows is practically futile.

"Who even uses bows and arrows to hunt people nowadays..." Besides, these must be some sick people to even think of hunting this poor girl.

And so the first signs were revealed.

As Kaito hid in the brush, Honami’s rock flew through the air almost like the petite Japanese girl was a Hall of Fame-worthy baseball pitcher, cutting through the wind with force and speed. She hadn’t seen who—or what—had chased the purple-haired girl, but somehow the blow landed. The proof of this was the sound of rock landing with a sharp ‘crack’ in the darkness of the forest. The sound of a body hitting the ground followed and there was a sudden silence before a blood-curdling, angry scream from the voices that remained.

“Grok!” One of them shouted in their strange, gravel-like accents.

For Hiroko, she would see a shortbow, crude and tribal, roll downward from the higher elevated forest, landing only a few feet away from her.

It was then there was more chattering and rustling in the woods. All three of the Japanese strangers would then hear another phrase in the strange voices that were pursuing the girl and now them. “Go around! Make it slow on the rock-chugger!”

The air cracked like a whip as the rock flew from Honami's hand and into the foilage. Though Honami had aimed randomly in the direction of the voices, the loud thud was evident enough that someone had been hit by the rock. Were they in pain? Had she killed someone? Would the police believe that her actions were in self-defense, given they had been kidnapped and then attacked with a volley of arrows by an unknown party? Honami was on edge, her mind filled with thoughts and questions that had no answer.

There was no time to think, regardless. Deathly howling into the forest air with rage, their pursuers pressed the attack again, and singled out Honami in the name of revenge.

Her eyes darted around the forest, looking for anything of use. Nonetheless, there wasn't much for Honami to find other than trees, sticks, and the occasional rock. Not wanting to test her luck for a second time, Honami picked up a broken branch, and readied to swing at anything that came from behind the tree she was using for cover.

"I don't know what the hell is happening, but does anyone have a plan that doesn't involve us dying or getting shot at?" Honami frantically shouted, hoping Hiroko and Kaito could hear her over the war cries.

Forest - ???
The surprise in Hiroko's face was evident when the rock that Honami had released seemed to go at a pace she didn't expect from the younger girl. The subsequent thud and angry shouting suggested that Honami's rock had hit its mark. Hiroko was thankful, at least that was one less person to worry about. Or maybe they were just enraged but with how fast that rock was going, she wouldn't be surprised if the person got knocked unconscious. And if Honami hit him just right, even dead.

Something was coming down the hill and when she squinted to see it better, it was a bow. It was probably what the one Honami hit was using. She was no expert on bows but it was definitely not something a normal hunter would use. Tribes? She didn't know of any tribes living in the vicinity. It just seemed unlikely to exist but these crude bows... maybe a group of insane people?

Hiroko shook her head. That wasn't important. She hurried over to grab the shortbow and hopefully get a few arrows on the way. It seemed like they were moving and was going to surround them. She hurried back to her cover and looked over to Honami who was asking for any suggestions.

She looked down at the bow. She didn't know how to use a bow, but desperate times call for desperate measures. "Running would just make us bigger targets." She reasoned out as she placed the collected arrows to her side before taking one and lining it up with the bow, trying to figure it out. "So I guess we just have to fight back. This is just self-defense." Hiroko was not going to die here, that's for sure.

Much like how Hiroko found an odd sense to use the small shortbow, the branch in Honami's hands felt natural, oddly so. The piece of timber didn’t feel like a crude stick ready to snap at the first sign of pressure, almost like it fit naturally within the girl’s hands.

The purple-haired girl had noticeably taken cover, pressing her back against a tree parallel to Hiroko’s, her wide pink irises looking into the forest. The sun above the four of them had been partly clouded and the amount of thick overgrowth made it hard to make out much in this part of the forest. As Hiroko suggested defending themselves a sense of dread covered the girl’s face, though she understood it well enough. That much could be told as she tried to calm herself while she waited for the enemy to strike.

Fortunately, Hiroko could, if she focused, hear the pitter-patter of each footstep as they hit the thick brush and dirt of the forest floor.

Which, in this case, was exactly what the group needed to keep a sense of their enemies. They were fast but not as quiet as they might have thought they were. By their movements she could tell there were three of them, all approaching from different parts of the deeper woods. One to her left, one straight ahead, and one trying to move around toward Honami on the far right. That meant two were coming in toward her direction and the last to flank Honami, or at least attempt to. When she was finished collecting this information she heard another battle-cry. As three small creatures with olive skin and shark teeth emerged from the forest with blinding speed.

As Hiroko lined up two shots on instinct, nailing the two creatures near her in the head with pin-point accuracy a loud ‘CRUNCH` echoed as Honami knocked the one attacking her down in one blow. A short silence followed. The creatures were all defeated in one motion?

Wait. Creatures?

It was a curious thing, now that the imminent danger was over. But as Hiroko and Honami could see plainly outside of the heat of the moment, it had not been as they initially thought. Had they filled themselves with doubt, they might’ve believed it to be a kappa, an impish like creature that was commonly told of in Japanese folklore. But, these creatures did not have the back of a turtle and maw of a bird. The creatures as they appeared looked closer to goblins from a bog-standard fantasy anime or video game. But as far as the three of them knew that was impossible. Goblin's were creatures of fiction; but yet, here they were as their corpses remained on the forest floor.

Before Hiroko and Honami could make a statement of disbelief the purple-haired girl decided to do so first.

“Oh wow. Thank the heaven and the sky. You two are pretty strong!”

It was a statement that was true in many ways that the two were yet to realize.

The battle was over as quick as it began.

Behind the tree, Honami had waited in ambush, honing in on the pitter-patter of whatever had been chasing them. Though the branch felt natural in her hands, Honami was clearly bothered by the feeling. Honami was by no means a softball star at her high school, so why did the branch feel so... normal to the school girl, as if she had held it many times before?

Damn it, focus! Now's not a time to think about the abnormal! Honami thought-shouted at herself, readying once again to swing at whoever wanted them dead.

Once certain that her target was near, listening to the crunch of forest foliage as a basis for her judgement, Honami struck with all her might. Though Honami had swung towards where the gut of a human should've been, she instead connected with the head of an imp-like creature, coating the branch in a nasty mess of what was once the creature's insides. A mess that made her teeter on the verge of vomiting. Gagging at the sight, Honami dropped the branch, and covered her mouth when she noticed something that she had seen before. This wasn't some imp-like creature, but rather, a goblin. However, goblins only existed in fiction, so why the hell was it here?!

As the purple-haired girl congratulated the two girls, Honami turned around, and marched right up to her. In another time, Honami may have boasted about being complimented, but by now, she had had enough. "What the hell is going on?!" Honami demanded, reaching for the girl's collar to yank her closer. "I've had enough of this! First, we wake up in the middle of nowhere, then somehow we can speak a language that isn't even close to Japanese, and now we had to fend off a pack of goblins—creatures that shouldn't even exist! I think I speak for everyone when I say that we need answers."

“Hey, uh--” The purple-haired girl yelped as the equally petite girl grabbed her by her neck. Immediately the tone of the conversation changed. “--what are you doing?! You're just talking crazy! Let me go!”

For Ipharia, Honami's words were as strange as Honami perceived the world around her.

Goblins were not strange to her world, though the purple-haired girl did not disagree with Honami’s assertion that the green-skinned creatures shouldn’t have existed. She never understood why the goddess created such beings. Though, it seemed that the green-haired girl in front of her was just as terrifying as the entire band that had chased her into this particular clearing in the first place. Her mention of “Japanese” was just as confusing to her. Did she mean Eianese? She wondered if she had run into an eccentric trio of bandits.

“Please! I don't know what you're talking about! If you're trying to scare me, I implore you to calm down! I-I don't have any money, if that's what y-you're after!”

Unknown Forest

This was... out of his area of expertise. Way, way out of it. Within his hiding spot, surrounded by thick foliage, Kaito had witnessed Honami throwing a stone at their opponents. Except, rather than flail about like a typical rock, it was like a small meteor had locked on to her target. There was no way a normal person like her was capable of such a feat.

Kaito dragged himself up and let his journals crash onto the forest floor. He scooped up the stone nearest to him and grimaced. He was beginning to develop some idea as to what exactly was happening to them, letting flickers of confidence take hold over his body. If he really was undergoing some sort of hallucination, then he too would be able to partake in affecting their surroundings. Mustering as much strength as possible, he threw the stone blindly in front of him, aided only by the noises of rustling that punctuated the forest.

"Hnggh!" The stone flopped towards the ground. The expanse of vegetation had swallowed it up, leaving not even a small thud.

Did anyone see that? he thought. Fortunately for him, the others seemed to be preoccupied.

The girl with the purple hair seemed relieved over Hiroko and Honami's skills. Was it over that quickly? He knew adrenaline tended to affect the perception of time drastically, but was genuinely shocked by the idea now that it was him going through it.

"It's hard to see so well around here, there could easily be more of them around." Them. As if he had any idea what those creatures were. He scooped up his materials, albeit with much less care than ever before, and carefully approached the others. His pace quickened at the sound of more conflict.

Whatever it was that he planned on asking didn't leave his mouth. The young man's jaw stopped halfway and began another question. "Wait! Did you not suddenly wake up here like we did?"

Forest - ???
Hiroko weighed the shortbow in her hands, and she felt it was familiar somehow. But she had never held one before, let alone shoot it. And yet, her hands seemed to know what to do as she nocked the arrow onto the bow. She took a deep breath and she could... hear the steps. Maybe she was just all too aware with the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

And when they appeared, Hiroko let out two arrows and hit them straight at the head like it was something she had always done. She blinked, looking down at the bow and then turning to Honami who had slammed the branch straight at the poor creature. Had they... had they really managed to kill three creatures just like that?

Creature. That was what it was. It wasn't anything she's ever seen before. That wasn't true... she's seen it in some anime and games before. Goblins. But they were just that, fiction, fantasy - not real and yet here she was now, facing three dead Goblins. Two of which she had manages to kill with a bow which she never had the proficiency in.

The purple haired girl congratulated them, seemingly unperturbed by the presence of the Goblins. Hiroko's eyes widened when Honami grabbed the woman by the collar and began questioning her about the things they did not understand. And yet the woman still is pushing that she knew nothing. In fact, she's thinking that this was some form of robbery.

"Let's calm down first. Honami, please let go of her." Hiroko walked towards them, placing a calming hand onto the surprisingly strong girl. Hiroko could understand Honami's rightful anger and confusion, but it wouldn't do them any good to scare the only person who seems to know a few more things than they did. "And in addition to Kaito's question, if you really didn't wake up like us, then would you mind telling us where we are? It's like we're not in Japan anymore."

“Wait. That guy was serious?”

The girl managed to reply to Hiroko’s question with relative ease as she adjusted the collar of her cloak. Though, her eyes remained on Honami as she stepped back from the trio once she let her go, still obviously nervous about her situation. She had not expected to survive goblins to be harassed by an impromptu interrogation.

“Uh, Japan? I’m pretty sure I woke up at my camp before, well, the goblins. I don’t know about what happened to you guys, but right now you’re in the Tarashima Forest.”

She thought hard about answers she could make, but as far as the three of them could tell she was saying nothing that she did not believe wholeheartedly. Tarashima sounded Japanese enough, but it wasn’t a location that the three were familiar with. The closest thing the three of them could think of was Terashima, though that wasn’t a place but rather a very uncommon Japanese surname. While the information the girl iterated was far from useful, she didn’t seem to recognize Hiroko’s mention of Japan, at the same time. She looked Japanese enough, despite some of her clothing choice, so this may have surprised the group of outsiders.

Honami huffed as she let go of the girl's collar, per Hiroko's request. "Tarashima? You've got to be joking. There's no forest in Japan by that name." She snapped back, clearly frustrated.

As the others said their piece in a less aggressive tone, it was then when Honami started to piece everything together. Honami had been so antsy, so angry at everyone and everything—just like she was at school or social events in general—that she hadn't pieced things together. Her eyes widened at the realization. What if this wasn't Japan?

Honami broke into hysterical laughter, as if she was having a sudden mental breakdown. "Oh, I think I know what's going on." She announced, looking at Kaito and Hiroko, and then to the purple-haired girl. "I doubt that you two watch anime. I mean, unless you're a bunch of otaku, but that's beside the point." It was a punch in her own gut, but Honami wasn't about to blab that she was a literal NEET to some strangers she just met mere hours earlier.

"Anyway, the kids at my school have been watching this new genre. I think they called it isekai? It had to do something with the main character going to a different world after they died. Call me crazy, but it might explain everything that has happened to us since we woke up in the forest. Though... we're not dead, are we?"
