Five years ago, the Hypnos Corporation released their highly anticipated game, Digimon: Emergence. By utilizing augmented reality and real-time GPS tracking, players could use their smartphones to track down Digimon in the real world, and battle against and alongside other players. The game quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, and Hypnos Corporation became one of the most profitable companies in the world in the span of six months. Of course, the game wasn't without its problems, but after being cooped up by global pandemic, people were looking for any excuse to get out of the house. As time went on, the bugs were ironed out, but the game still has little issues here and there.

As with any game, there have been all kinds of stories tied to it. Some are sweet, wholesome stories that were featured on the news, like "I met my husband during a boss raid!". However, other rumors and legends have been swirling around the internet.

"My Digimon said my name!"

"I saw a real Koromon in the park!"

"Guilmon stole my sandwich!?"

Most people dismiss these stories as outright lies, or guerilla marketing for the game. However many people insist that these strange stories that tie back to Digimon are true. One rumor in particular has reached the status of urban legend in the city of Tokyo after it was posted on the anonymous forum Nichannel.

I was playing D:E in the park near his school after the sun went down. My friend told me that he'd found lots of rare Digimon there, and they only came out at night. I waited for so long, but I didn't see a single Digimon on my phone. I was about to head home when I saw a glowing blue flame among the trees. I was mesmerized. Something about it seemed to want to come close to it. I drew closer to the flame, but it began moving away. I started following the fire until it came to a stop at an old shrine. Sitting there were two women in fox masks wearing outfits like shrine maidens'. They were singing in a language I didn't understand.

When their song finished, they turned to look at me. I had no idea who they were, but being near them, I felt a sense of peace. One of them, whose outfit was red, asked me a question: "Art thou a Tamer?" I was confused by what she meant, at first. The second, dressed in black, blew a smoke ring from her pipe, and said, "What my sister means is, do you play Digimon: Emergence?"

I was confused. Why would they want to know if I played a game on my phone? I simply answered, yes, and the two shrine maidens smiled. "We have a gift for you," the woman in black said. "But you must answer this question for us: do you want your Digimon to be stronger, or do you want them to have new abilities?"

"Why not both?" I asked. The two mikos chuckled, and the woman in red wagged her finger at me.

"Thou art too greedy, little boy," she chided. "Come and find us again when thine heart is purer."

There was a bright flash of light, and I covered my eyes. When I opened them again, the two mikos were nowhere in sight, and the air felt charged with electricity. I have no photos or videos to back this story up, but it actually happened. If you see the two maidens, don't make the same mistake I did.

Hypnos has made no comment on any of these stories beyond, "People have such vivid imaginations!" But are all of these accounts just stories fabricated to entertain fellow internet users? Or is there a kernel of truth to them? There's only one way to find out...

This RP has been rattling around in my brain in some form for a while now, and I'd like to try my hand at getting a small group RP running. The tone I have in mind for the RP is something along the lines of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory, with elements from various other Digimon media, though the strongest inspirations are Ghost Game and Tamers.

I'd like a little bit more feedback on this to improve it before getting it running properly, and any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I’m definitely down for some Digimon RP. I will say though if you’re going for Cyber Sleuth vibes, instead of using phones, the game could be what the digivice’s are for in this story.

You could even spice it up like CS and have different FORMS of digivices. Like how the CS protags used goggles for their digivices and the HM protags had a visor.

@TheNoCoKid Glad you brought that up. Right off the bat, I wanted to incorporate two different Digivices, inspired by different anime.

Digivice SP: The Digivice SP provides a power boost to Digimon when they Digivolve. A Digimon with boosted power is roughly 20% stronger than if they had Digivolved without the use of a Digivice SP.
Digivice VB: While the Digivice VB lacks the power boosting ability of the SP, it makes up for it by being able to make use of Digital Modification (or DiM) cards to provide a Digimon with attacks and abilities that it normally wouldn't be able to use; while the attacks and abilities provided by DiM cards provide more utility, any attacks and abilities used are less powerful than normal attacks. DiM cards can be obtained by defeating different Digimon, or by purchasing them from [REDACTED].

I am down. This sounds like my jam. What are you looking for as far as characters go? I noticed you cited Cyber Sleuth, Tamers, and Ghost Game, but there's a bit of variance there when it comes to things like maturity and age. Tighter than most of the Digimon franchise as a whole, but I still find it worth asking.

I'll read through this as soon as I can, (tomorrow) but since it's digimon, I'll throw in interest blindly lol.

@tobiax The main age range for characters is mid to late teens.

Yeah, this sounds great.

As for questions, could you expand on the Emergence game and what that involves? I assume it's somewhat similar to Pokemon GO, but what's the gameplay like? How many digimon are there for each tamer? Do you raise your digimon like a VPet/Re:Digitize/Next Order, or do you just fight them like a digivice toy? If the players of the game get multiple digimon, are there Farm Islands?

What's the rule on digivolution routes? Is it restricted to exclusively shown in canon routes, or can a possible but never shown in canon route be used?

@The World All excellent questions!
  • The way I figure, Emergence's gameplay involvws finding Digimon on the map and battling them. When a wild Digimon is defeated, a player obtains a certain amount of data from them. Eventually the accrued data can be used to create and hatch a DigiEgg. The "raising" aspect I have in mind is fairly limited, more in line with Pokemon-Amie.
  • Players in the RP may have up to two main Digimon partners to start with. However, if you want to start with two Digimon, they will be restricted to Rookie levels.
  • Given the nature of the game, a player of Digimon: Emergence may collect a certain number of Digimon; this number can be increased either through lots of patience, or using the in-game premium currency; however this is just a little flavor. For the sake of the RP, there's really no limit. These extra Digimon are kept on farm islands where they live, work, and play. That being said, there are some rumors of Digimon going missing too...
  • In Emergence, Digimon can achieve new forms from a pool of species. While in-game this is based on their stats, for the sake of the RP, I'd like to keep it to a simple rule: if there's a solid logic to the evolutionary tree, then it's likely acceptable.

All that sounds perfect~

Though I'm assuming the collected data makes a random egg instead of an egg of the digimon the data is from? Or is it basically scan data from the Story games?

Also, are there any banned digimon to start with? Obviously stage locked, but for example (I don't plan to use these but it's an OP combo) Zubamon and Ludomon? Or what about duplicates like two Salamons? Is Jogress even going to be a function, and what about the Digimentals/DigiArmor "Eggs"? Are they rare drops, one of a kind, or not a thing?

Sorry to ask so many questions, I just want as good an idea of the IC D:E game as possible to prepare off of.

@The World

  • It's basically scan data. Collect enough scan data to create a DigiEgg.
  • None that I can think of off the top of my head, but assuming that the two Digimon are the same species, but undergo different evolutionary lines, then it's fine. For example, if your Tamer has two Salamon/Plotmon, one evolves along the Angewomon line, while the other LadyDevimon line, you're okay.
  • Jogress/DNA Digivolution is a thing, but doing so essentially takes the two consciousnesses of the Digimon and combines them into one to create a new being. While this new Digimon has the memories of its components, it's entirely possible that it will behave differently from before.
  • Firstly, we're calling them "Digimentals" to avoid any confusion. They're rare evolutionary items that can be obtained through rare drops or in-game events. These items are more or less akin to Mega Stones in the Let's Go! Pokemon games. As long as a Tamer has one in their inventory, their Digimon can access these forms.

@Crimson Flame@tobiax@TheNoCoKid@The World I've been doing some figuring, and I may have to simplify the DiM system from what I initially had in mind, as well as make certain rules for what kinds of DiM cards can be used by Digimon; for example, attack cards can only be from--at most--Digimon from one evolutionary stage higher than the Digimon that uses it. An example would be Aegiomon (Champion/Adult level) being able to utilize RizeGreymon's (Ultimate/Perfect level) Trident Revolver attack, but not being able to use Amphimon's (Mega/Ultimate level) Raiburn Break/Thunder Break attack. If any of you would be interested in helping me set this up, I would be very appreciative.

That sounds fair. It would be weird for like, a Terriermon to throw out a Poseidon Force. Particularly in an RP. That being said, though, I'm wondering how non-combat abilities, like digging and swimming, would be handled. Both if they'd be inheritable, and how much you see them playing into the story. I'd be down to help with anything.

Getting back to this just now, but if you want to simplify the concept, I think there’s an idea that could work. You mentioned having the ability to utilize Farm Islands in the game world. What if you can use the modification system, but it only applies to Digimon that are on your farm islands?

This way, players have an incentive to use the VB Digivice and collect more Digimon while the SP users don’t miss any game-breaking power ups and could focus their efforts on the single Digimon they’re evolving?

To clarify: If you are using an Agumon, and there’s a Gatomon, Elecmon, and a Kuwagamon in your Farm Island, Agumon can only use modifications pertaining to those THREE Digimon. Should any of them evolve, players would access the evolution’s modifications, but the weaker ones are saved to the Digivice memory and can still be used later.

To expand on this, maybe a summon system? You can summon out a digimon from a farm for a single attack, then need it to recharge both the ability to summon and, for a longer period of time, that digimon in particular's ability to be summoned. DiM cards would then let you do this with digimon you don't actually have on an island and with more regularity, less time to recharge the ability itself and somewhat faster recharge for the DiM than for the digimon on the farm. Maybe a special combo attack if you have two compatible digimon on the farm or on the farm and a DiM card? Doubles or triples the summon recharge, but is exceptionally powerful. Maybe another benefit of the VB digivice is the ability to use a combo attack with two digimon on the farm AND a DiM card, for an extreme attack once a day or less, giving tons of variety to manage against the combo attack of a SP that boosts the combo attack's damage anyway.

Though saving the previous stages on the digivice seems counter-intuitive in terms of an actual game based on digimon that's similar to Pokemon GO, since it disincentivizes players to get multiple of the same digimon, thus spending more time and/or money on the game.

@Big McLargehuge
I have another question that I forgot to ask: How much digimon media exists IC, and how does it differ from IRL digimon media? Obviously D:E is different, but do the anime and/or manga exist, or the video games, or the card games?

Card games, anime and manga, and virtual pets are a thing, but video games have been few and far between.

@The World@Big McLargehuge The only reason I’d keep the Digivice SV ‘memory’ mechanic is because I’m writing under the assumption we’ll have to keep updating our character sheets whenever we get a new Digimon/evolution. Having old mods ‘saved’ means players in the RP won’t have to constantly be removing and adding Digimon every time they need new mods. Nothing really to do with the GAME in the RP, but just convenience for the people posting on the forum.

@Big McLargehuge Also, I wanted to ask this, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense for a massive AR game to have multiple controllers/digivices. I was wondering if you thought of restructuring the system like the Adventure 02 system? I.e. The kids had their digivices (the D3s), but they also had those pager things (can’t remember the name) that stored their digi-eggs. What if you used something g similar but the pager stored Farms, Mods, Digi-Eggs, etc?
