A quiet ride should have been lovely and boring. It wasn't long before the young water mage had to catch herself from starting to hum. The forest was lovely, and if it wasn't for knowing the dangers that lurked inside, she'd likely come wandering here herself. The way the sunlight passed between the leaves of trees, the wild flowers scattered among the carpet of fallen vegetation, the variety of birds perched in various places that didn't usually come into town - all quite beautiful. At some point she'd started counting how many blue and purple flowers were around and it wasn't until the guards started pointing out the lack of noise that she even realized she hadn't seen a bird or critter in a while.

Asterins... It was the only logical beast in the area that would make the forest go silent like that. Thus far, she never had the displeasure of an up close battle with one but she had seen the teeth and the claws and heard rumors about what they could do. Her attention turned from their surroundings to Nolan when he spoke up. Yup, even though the guards likely expected something else to cause issue with this shipment, Asterins being a problem didn't change any of their missions.

Offense would be an entirely different matter, but she at least never had problems casting defensive or utility spells. She kept her breathing steady, stroking her horse's neck as it shifted from side to side. Her gaze turned to the surroundings, scanning to be as ready as she could for the next point of attack. Would funneling help or just mess up the guards? She didn't like the idea of being surrounded. Would it be better for everyone if the beasts were able to pile in front of them though? That would be worse, wouldn't it? Or would it be even worse to have them potentially just go from behind? Maybe she could block behind them - but that would block other travelers until she tore the wall down...."Focus," she whispered to herself.

Her attention turned back to the guards. She'd dealt with a beast with similarly sharp claws and their armor didn't look up to par for that kind of attack, and the horses definitely needed some additional protection if they were attacked. "Water Make: Thick Articulated Armor", Ria muttered and directed the spell on each of the guards and all of the horses. It would make everything but a face plate, in hopes of helping grant them the best protection possible without hindering their ability to see or move as they were used to. It was the only thing she definitely knew she could do to help protect the guards and the cargo.

Mark quietly listened to the more detailed information about the assignment. Once again, his interest in capturing the creature to study was peaked. It didn't sound like that was the intent. Sounded like they wanted the thing dead. Unfortunate for his interest in the creature, but if the guards were nervous and thought it would make it safer for them and the town if the thing was dead...Nope, still unfortunate. It wouldn't help in the long run to not know more about the thing, but history was full of killing things you didn't understand.

"Our task in this mission is to kill this creature? Or capture it?" His attention was on the device being offered as he spoke. He accepted the device, and pocketed it as his attention returned to the guardsman. "We will ensure we achieve the goal you desire."

He had half a thought to tell the Sergeant to run rather than buy them time, but he was fairly certain that request would be shunned. Which made the request a waste of effort on his part, but he didn't relish the thought of guard deaths weighing on his conscious. Two miles out meant the lightning beast could kill one or more before he could get there.

Well, they would cross that threshold if they got there. All he needed was the answer to his very pressing question about the state they needed that beast to be in, and they were set to be on their way. Hopefully Adelyn wouldn't delay their departure; given Kiba talked less than he did, there wasn't much chance the older mage would ruin that streak now by dragging out their departure. The sooner this mission started, the sooner it was over.

Suppose she expected a bit too much from the older man to show a bit of maturity but it is what it is, Adelyn wasn't going to press the issue because it seemed obvious that wouldn't get anyone anywhere and the sooner they got started the sooner they could finish the job. Though she couldn't really hide the face she made when the made started speaking in such a crude manner, but she held her tongue on that matter as well.

Handed the VOX unit, she gave it a look over as the sergeant explained the details, although she already knew how they worked. She had used them before during 'lessons' back home so just nodded and pocketed the little device for now. There wasn't much use for them at the moment after all.

"That sounds like Jenna." Adelyn sighed at the comment of the guild mages looking forward to this challenge that made the garrison commander nervous and shook her head lightly. "But she's right. To be a mage is to test your skills against dangers above that of the common folk. We'll see the beast is stopped...whether through capture or other means."

Adelyn glanced toward Mark as she spoke on that matter. More of a curious shift of her eyes than a full-on locking of attention, but her attention was somewhat given to the older boy. She wasn't too sure why he asking about killing or capturing it as Adelyn was pretty sure the job was to kill it...but suppose the request hadn't actually stated it, so while she wasn't sure why he cared about that fact, she figured there was no harm in trying to capture it if that was his or the garrisons intention. Just it would make the job harder no doubt...unless she could try to paralyse it? Such a thought made her pause for a moment.

Could...could she output enough to do that? Or rather, could she control an output enough to do that without frying the thing? You know what, it was best not to dwell too much on the matter till she actually saw the beast. Once Mark's question about whether they were to kill or capture the monster they should be right to go and find the creature.

Ariel Gratas

Rising Starborn Guild Hall

Ky @Cello| D'angelo @samreaper| Jenny @Zarkun| Akemi @Lunarlord34

Loyalty? That definitely was not Ariel's M.O. Sure, she came here for help. But she was a selfish loner with a misguided drive for power. For a while, all the surrounding talking seemed a bit muffled. An internal struggle began to surface. Competing selves began to go back and forth. This wasn't entirely out of nowhere, Ariel had a way of processing with internal arguments. Weighing the pros and cons of a given decision. This time though, it was like a whole other person was responding back with her own voice in the first person.

So sad. I should really work on my trust issues.
What? Who are you?
Oh wait, that's just me.
I wouldn't say something like that.
Of course I would. I just didn't want to admit it.
You're the magic talking.
It's only bringing out something I know I wanted.
I never wanted this. That stupid crystal broke me.
Mhm.
And now it's given me split personalities or something.
I can't rule that out. Hey, this is kind of fun.
It is not fun. I'm losing my mind.
Oh look, a friend!
Don't change the subje... oh.

The inner monolog collapsed as Akemi grabbed Ariel's fluffy tail. Instead of pushing the girl away, the young woman patted her fellow guild member on the head. "Hello. My name is Ariel. I just joined Rising Starborn. I think." She glanced at Jenny for a second. Initiation seemed shockingly simple, almost concerning so. Eh, if there was more than she would surely hear about it.

Catching up mentally, she glanced at the young mages and the job they were apparently singing up for. It seemed irresponsible to send them off with a total stranger. Ariel of course had no experience what-so-ever with guild jobs, teamwork, babysitting, and she herself was a stranger. Which of course meant that she must go to protect the young pups! "Jenny. I realize that D'Angelo is going, but I think it would best if an older guild member joined them as well. I would love to supervise and make sure things go smoothly." There wasn't an ounce of doubt in her voice. She was completely onboard.

The Sergeant paused as they asked about the exact method of dealing with the monster in question. Obviously the quickest and least dangerous thing to do, that he was sure was the best way to do it, was to kill the beast. If there were scientific inquiries into the beast, there were autopsies and similar techniques the corpse would be more than sufficient for, but capturing it offered insight into behavioral patterns, diet, calls and other things a corpse couldn't offer. Admittedly, Monreu wasn't sure which he'd prefer and he knew the commander just wanted it neutralized, alive or captured. After some consideration, he nodded, mostly to himself. "Objective is simply neutralizing the threat, so if we can capture, the attempt can be made, but I'd prefer we all get home in one piece, so kill it if necessary." He started to turn, then paused.

"My job is to make sure you all get home in one piece and alive. I'll do what I have to to complete that objective, clear?"

The guardsmen jolted slightly in surprise when the water armor appeared on them, but, despite their insistence that they were fairly green compared to other members who usually did these escorts, didn't panic or get distracted too much. The Corporal was the only one who spoke. "Some warning next time would be appreciated." They all moved around to get a feel for the extra protection as Nolan used his True Sight to look for the very souls of the predators. And while he could see them, they were incredibly fast moving and hard to keep track of, with a pair even jumping over the caravan, attempting to spoke the horses. To the credit of the animals, however, they held their ground, true to their training. PFC Tanson suddenly fired a burst into one of the bushes to his right, blue lines of energy burning through the underbrush. "It's not just fucking Asterins, they're swarming!" In response, three Asterins rushed at Nolan and Ria, the two seeemingly least well protected members of the caravan. They could both see the toxin Ria had heard rumors about practically dripping from their mouths.

One of the other PFCs opened fire in support of the mages as the other three gunned down the Asterin as they large and agile lizards rushed out of the underbrush. "Watch the upper branches," the Corporal called, "they're not ashamed to get the literal jump on us!"

Jenna raised an eyebrow as D'Angelo left, but she didn't speak up or try and stop him, instead listening to Ariel and chuckling slightly at her suggestion. It would seem that her gift of magic for the young woman had induced a sense of loyalty stronger than she normally saw in new members, but she was glad all the same. Having an older, even if newer, member of the guild on the job would be good and improve the odds of the job's requester not turning them down outright. "Go ahead, Ariel, you can go as well. Just remember, hourly check-ins. Amelia, your dad's entrusted me to keep you safe and this job should be perfect to ease you into guild life. However, you have my number if you need someone you know to talk to at any point, alright?"

"Nice to meet you...yawn Ariel. Welcome to the guild...." She wasn't sure why the woman started patting her on the head, but Akemi didn't seem to mind much. Either that or she was wholly distracted by the tail she had found herself enamored by, one of the two.

"Hourly check-ins? I can do that." As if only just catching that comment by Jenna, Akemi belatedly agreed even though she wasn't sure why they needed to do that. Everyone here could look after themselves, but suppose Zen had told her similar before so maybe it was to keep an eye on her health? Quite possibly a factor, but she did finally notice Amelia as well. Oh. They were bringing a child with them? Of course, such an ironic thought was lost on Akemi, but she supposed she had better be on the lookout for the girl as well.

"....pixie?" She wasn't exactly sure what Dangelo was talking about, but he seemed like a nice guy so she just gave him a wave as he made his way out. Still not sure what the Pixie comment was all about but she was more occupied with the tails than much else so didn't give it much thought otherwise. But supposed that meant it was her, Ky, her new friend Ariel, this D'angelo fellow, and uh...Akemi wasn't entirely too sure who this girl was but she also seemed nice and friendly!

She would be able to tell Zen she was able to make some new friends when he got back!

"Mhmm. I'm Akemi, and you?" Without really straying far from Ariel's tail, she extended a hand out to Amelia in greeting. Of course, she had still yet to tidy up her look, so her hair and clothes were still a mess so this might in turn extend a poor first impression onto Amelia, but Akemi also seemed half asleep as she spoke so there was that.

After an exchange of pleasantries and some more little small talk, Akemi glanced back over the flier to see where exactly it was they were heading. Didn't really state a job location but she assumed they would either have to head to area of the town where nobles resided, or to the train station. Once she got it clarified from Jenna which one they were to head to, unless someone had something else to say or do, suppose they would be off.

....though she still didn't stray far from that tail.

Ok, so capturing the beast was fine. Or rather, whatever it took to get the job done and everyone back safely in one piece. Adelyn hoped that satisfied whatever it was that was compelling Mark to be so focused on that point and now began to think to the job ahead. She wasn't sure why this guard...Sergeant was it? Eh, his rank didn't mean much to her, but she just wasn't entirely sure why he seemed so concerned about this job. It was a simple monster beating request wasn't it?

Of course, Adelyn had never done one before, as her father had...well suppose it was best to say she hadn't been allowed to do any with much combat or public awareness in general. Always left in the background, never in the foreground. 'Retrieve this book', 'fill out this paperwork'. Tch. She shouldn't be thinking about stuff like that right now, she had a job to focus on. But her brothers had always spoke of it as something so easy, even she could do it despite her lack of talent.

So then why...why was all this talk of the beast making her feel uncomfortable all of a sudden?

"Suppose that's settled then. Capture it seems to be the preferred first option, but kill it if we have to. Seems like decent enough groundwork with flexibility to plan around, but to even make a plan in the first place we need to find the creature and see what we're up against. Lead the way Sergant Monreu." There wasn't really much else to be said on the matter after all, not anything that they couldn't be filled in on the way to the forest anyway. And then once there, it was a simple matter of drawing the beast out and making a plan around what it may entail.

Everything always did sound much simpler said rather than done, didn't it...

Five, no there were probably more than that. Nolans eyes darted as he tried his best to keep track of their movements, but these bloody things were too fast to actually get a firm stance on their numbers though he refused to turn his spell off. The moment he did so would have meant giving up any possible advantage he could take over these damned lizard dire wolves.

Nolan jumped off his horse. There was no point on being on a it; these things were too fast and frankly, he was faster than his borrowed steed and could maneuver better on foot than trying to move on a panicking steed if the Asterins got close enough or if they were freaked out by them or more likely by him, which was great timing because three very hungry lizards were making a mad dash towards them.

"Your hunger must be dulling your instincts," he said almost as if he was insulted. Inky darkness swirled and slithered around his body followed by a suffocating pressure of magical energy. The smell of ash hung in the air and small specks of powder trailed behind the violent swirl of magic around the mage. It gathered around his hands and swirled around his hands like miniature tornados. He swung his arms forward and released two vortexes of pitch-black ash with the attempt to swallow the three Asterin and send hurling into the air at such a great distance that they either died on impact or were sent so far away that they would not become a problem.

"Sorry. Yes, I'll warn next time." The water mage looked a bit sheepish. But there was no time to really let the feeling sink in. the bloody things were moving. She couldn't get a good sight on them but she could hear the movements. The horse she was on stirred a bit restless but not because it was spooked. At least that was good.

Then they attacked. Too fast.

Ria threw a hand up toward the rushing Asterins. What should have been a blast of water was nothing. She swallowed, trying to keep her panic from showing. Okay, attacking wasn't an option yet. She'd have to try again later since others seemed to be handling three on their way.

She shook her hand then quickly jumped to her feet, seamlessly positioning her feet on the saddle like she'd done this a dozen times. The horse shifted nervously beneath her but she was used to that too. It wouldn't have been her first time on a panicked horse getting attacked. But she had to do something to help keep them safe. Direct attack wasn't an option, but a structure to keep them safe from overhead ambush?

Her fingers worked the intricate patterns she needed while she worked her hands together near her waist and wove strings of concentrated water together. At the same time the tornadoes of dark energy Nolan cast went out, she threw her hands up. "Water Make: Canopy."

Interactions: Adelyn @Lunarlord34, Kiba @Cello, Sergeant Monreu @Zarkun

Adelyn seemed confident, and Kiba was capable. Despite knowing the lightning mage was the weak link she still at least presented herself as more than capable, which made him wonder if she realized she was the weak link here or not. Maybe his initial assessment of her ability was drastically wrong. There was a first time for everything. They'd certainly find out soon enough though.

Like the girl said, it seemed pretty clear cut and like they had time to plan. Not that his plans would be vocalized before it was necessary. There was no planning without actually getting eyes on the situation. An exercise in trust it was. He didn't doubt his ability to obliterate the target if he could land a blow, but he liked the idea of the challenge of taking the beast in alive. It would prove far more valuable to understand the thing than if it was dead, but it also presented its own quagmire of dangers. Nothing worth learning came without risks, though.

But the matter, unfortunately as far as he saw it, wasn't quite settled. There was that nagging standard objective he was told to keep in mind any time he had to work jobs with others.

"Sergeant, my prime directive is to make sure everyone gets home alive. That includes you and your men. Do not draw any more attention to you than your task requires. I have no intentions of either of us failing our objectives."

The musician couldn't help but observe the tension in town, after managing to find herself a place for a coffee. She strummed lightly on a lyre as she meandered the streets. The guard seemed spread thin here. She'd seen that caravan leave town, accompanied by two who were definitely not guards in uniform. Was there a guild here?

Honestly, she was more interested in trying to find someone who could sell her a local instrument, but... err... she might actually be a little low on cash for that. Hnm. Maybe she'd better find that guild hall after all.

As if to cement her fears, she found an instrument shop. Passed by the large window, with an instrument she'd never seen before on display. She gasped, but the light in her eyes didn't last long when she saw the price tag. Yeeaah, it did seem a complicated thing, didn't it? Not simple to produce. She wondered how long it took to make one. Was it hand made? She'd be back to ask questions when she had the money.

She found herself singing softly as she meandered the town, strumming her lyre, "gotta make money~ for the thing I wanna baahh-iieee-aahh-iiee-aaiiee," she followed with a giggle, "punk bands are so fun. Now, where's that guildhall..."

D'angelo Schultz

Walking his way out through the doors with a slight hop to his steps, unable to fully contain his excitement for the adventure ahead. This could prove to be just what the enthusiastic chubby individual had been looking for. His journey still mostly new; only a few months since living the boarding school.

For him, this could in a literal sense be a new beginning for D'angelo. Not to mention all the potential future friends he can make! There were probably more, he figured and sadly had missed them. But, always possible to meet them when they return. Whether he would stay, undecided.

With a giddy chuckle, D'angelo came to a stop a few steps outside the guild, Nimbus floating at his right-side level with his chest." Just think, Nimbus. All the comics of mages going on jobs and bonding, and we get to participate in! So wicked!" Nodding his head with an energetic clap.

" But first. Let's be off Nimbus!" He exclaimed pointing skyward in his attempt of a heroic pose. And continued to maintain it as the seconds ticked by as if expecting something to happen, the golden cloud simply floating in place...being a cloud.

A small gulp as the pudgy young adult pursed his lips to the side." Psst...that's your cue." He whispered under his breath.

The cloud gave no sign of moving nor any real indication it even heard its creator.

Now having posed long enough for it to be awkward (possibly been awkward to begin with, but opinions) D'angelo let out a huff and thought to rebuke the cloud for letting him look stupid. Pausing as he remembered...

Right hand slapping to the forehead." Ah, darn! It slipped my mind." Muttering as he bent down to slip his shoes off; holding them by the heel, he stood back up." Sorry about that, Nimbus. One going up, please." At his kind request and proper respect, the cloud drifted down to feet level allowing him to step on.

Miming the action of pressing an elevator button before crossing his arms, his shoes resting against his left arm as Nimbus rose upward. Bobbing his head humming elevator music style tune. Up Nimbus rose with minimal effort; eventually reaching above the roof of the guild where his cloud shed had been set to wait." Ding! Please watch your step." D'angelo spoke in a faux female announcer voice then gave a casual wave of his right hand, following with an amused chuckle nudging nimbus with his elbow.

The action causing an opening in the otherwise entrance less cloudy mass wide enough to act as a door." Alright, just need to grab some stuff. I may mostly just be a spectator, but doesn't mean an excuse to be lax. We must be watchful and diligent." And enjoy the sights and events that unfold, nothing bad hopefully.

Stepping his way inside, Nimbus following where he then clapped his hands to have a small yellow glowing puffball pop down from the ceiling illuminating the chamber with a faint staticky spark every now and then.

A rumbling spark came from Nimbus from beside him shortly after seeing the poorly organized belongings." Ugh, you don't have to keep reminding me. I know its a mess." Turning away with a pouty face and with a sarcastic tone." I know I should organize..." A huge blowing huff of relief." But, I can't keep the group waiting. Gonna have to wait!" A victorious cheeky laugh as D'angelo moved towards the pile where he started to rummage around.

" Let's see. For now, just necessities should do I suppose. This shouldn't be a dangerous quest." Speaking out loud to clarify his plan to Nimbus. With that, he carried on; humming as he grabbed some bottles of water, reaching them out where he would rest them on Nimbus. The items placed on the golden cloud shortly sank into its puffy depths eventually disappearing from sight. All the while, the chubby male continued on, grabbing some fruits and dry foods along with a simple first aid kit.

" Think that should do it. Hm... oh yeah!" Snap of his fingers as he thought of something and moved to a different part of the pile." Got to have entertainment. If there's something I can do for sure. Let's see, what instrument to bring." Searching around.

The bongos? No. The recorder? No. The banjo? Maybe...nah. The maracas? **Sounds of Marakas being shaken obnoxiously** No. The harmonica? *Awful shrill blowing noise* No." Ooh! I got it!" Diving in, his upper body disappearing from sight for a few moments only to suddenly reappear and turned around holding a bagpipe. *Expected awful bagpipe sounds that almost sounds like the bag pleading for deaht* " Yes?! " He asked the floating cloud enthusiacally?

Seconds passed as the cloud floated in placed with no feasible change. And yet, its appearance almost gave off the appearance it was agitated at what it had just been made to endure. A completely and absolutely for sure and horribly unfortunate tiny spark of lightning shot out hitting the bagpipe leaving a hole. The sweet release granted upon the bagpipe in its sputtering glee as it deflated.

" Sheesh. A simple no would have been enough. Ah well. I can get a new one, sorry about that." Patting the bagpipe before turning to return it to the pile for the time being. After some more pondering, D'angelo made his decision and for everyone's relief had chosen the triangle.

A metallic clang rang out with a tap." Righteous! This is going to be so epic!" Exclaimed with a strong clang of the triangle to finish off his side quest." Hah-ah! We will find our heroic moment tone, just you wait." Winking at Nimbus who gave a small quiver in cloud form for shoulder shrugging.

A satisfied grin, he tossed the triangle and rod onto Nimbus while making his way towards the opening." Think that should do it. Now to meet up with the group." Taking a step forward out of the floating shed though Nimbus with one quick fluid motion had floated under the previously empty space under his foot." And best to get this out of the way." Turning halfway to the cloud shed where he clapped his hands having the hole close up before it drifted higher up into the sky until it would be hidden among the clouds.

Clapping his hands in a dusting off manner while moving to sit down, the golden cloud floating back towards the ground. From there, D'angelo was ready to meet the group and set off.

The bard hummed and strummed her way along, though a certain something caught her eye before she wandered too far in the wrong direction. Some fellow in a... puffy, pastel yellow... cage? was rising into the sky to another peculiar cloud that she hadn't noticed before and wasn't moving.

"Hey, there it is."

Trinity wove her way through an alley or two as she followed her direct line to what she could only assume was a local guild. She hadn't seen anything nearly as interesting as that around here, and if there was a word for mages, it was interesting.

Sure enough, when she got to the place beneath that cloud, it was a guild hall. The plucking on her lyre simmered down to a lighthearted suspense as she peeked in through the front doorway, just as the jolly fellow she saw go up came back down. She turned and glanced only quickly at first, but turned more fully once she realized he might have information. Quite likely, all things considered. Besides, he seemed a lively guy. Besides, he had an... calling the triangle an instrument felt like strong wording, but she shouldn't be a snob. Even she had a cowbell. Not that she ever used it... at any rate, he seemed to be enthusiastic about music. Or that was merely his dinner chime and he was a cook for someone.

"Oh, hey. Good mmmm," though she'd been smiling, her face grew perplexed as she looked at the sky, found their local star, worked out her directions really quick and turned back to D'Angelo, "mmm-afternoo... oon?, is this the guild hall? My name's Trinity, I'm looking for mage work." She didn't see a guild mark on this guy, either it was hidden or he wasn't with this guild, "are they recruiting, do you know?"

The cloud must be a part of this guy's magic, right? It looked very soft, but it was clearly not just any cloud. That other cloud was gone now, too, she'd noticed when searching the sky for the time. This guy's magic was clearly something impressive, or maybe he was just powerful.

Sergeant Monreu chuckled at the as-of-yet unnamed mage's statement, but he did respect the intent. As he lead the group outside to where there were four horses with armor waiting for them at the main gate. The ride was uneventful as they set off into the forest. The wildlife seemed to be making its usual sounds, but after about 45 minutes, the Sergeant signaled a halt and dismounted, approaching a large tree with a ladder ascending it. "This is my post, got a view of everything for about a fifteen or twenty mild radius. The last known position is a massive clearing about two miles north of me. I'd dismount here unless you think you need the extra mobility, approach on foot. We don't have any real understanding of what this thing is, so...yeah. All I can do is advise an approach, final decision is yours. Good luck."

And with that, he started his ascent up the ladder, his sniper rifle smacking against his back as he went. This left the three mages to discuss amongst themselves how to handle their own approach for the mission, whether they'd thunder in on horses or sneak up on foot, or if they could even attempt to be sneaky, as for all they knew, it would smell them long before they saw it. What would the three mages do?

As the tornadoes hurl towards the Asterin rushing the mages, two of them manage to dodge around the vortexes, hissing as they land and then resume their charge. The third, however, was not so lucky, getting caught up and slung through the air, where one of the PFCs gunned it down without issue. The creation of the Water Canopy was timely as a group of six of the large lizards bounced off of it, scattering amongst the branches. Another wave rushed forward, 12 in total, but the combination of magic and tactical prowess that the soldiers had made it easy to deal with. However, more could be heard and it was clear the group was surrounded. "Hey Corporal," PFC Tanson called, "think there could be an Alpha? There's way more than a normal pack has." The corporal didn't reply right away, instead busy speaking into the radio and seemingly arguing with someone. One of the drivers poked his head out of their window, looking around carefully as he did so.

"What, uh, what's the plan, people? We can't afford to turn back, that outpost needs this." The driver with Damian looks at him and the Lord of Fire and Steel shook his head.

"They're more than capable of dealing with Asterin, even an alpha. I'm sure it'll be fine. And if not, I'll step in. But this is supposed to be for the guild, not me. Everyone, mostly, knows and trusts me."

Directing the group to where the job would be beginning, the Rembrandt train station, Jenna watched them head out the door, waving until it closed and then silently praying that it would be as peaceful as it was supposed to be. Rumors abounded of all kinds of things happening in the world, including new monsters, and it made the Guild Master worry for the safety of her guild members. For the group, they would arrive outside the train station and, when inquiring about their intended escortee, be informed they hadn't yet arrived but should soon.

D'angelo Schultz

@CitrusArms

The chubby individual floated downward, humming with hands bopping against knees as he went. Shortly after reaching the ground; before he could try to find the others, when the voice of a young woman reached his ears.

The golden cloud would shift and turn without any need of indication or sign until D'angelo had been facing Trinity followed with that ever-friendly big smile of his." Oh! Hey there!"

"mmm-afternoo... oon?, is this the guild hall? My name's Trinity, I'm looking for mage work." She didn't see a guild mark on this guy, either it was hidden or he wasn't with this guild, "Are they recruiting, do you know?"

Listening to the woman, introduced as Trinity and her questions; waiting till she was done to clap his hands." This is indeed the guild-hall hah-hah!" He exclaimed with an excited laugh at the prospect of another possible friend." Though I can't say for certain if they're recruiting still, but no harm in asking, yeah? I mean, I'm not part of the guild, myself but- Ah, you don't want to hear the ramblings of a stranger." Waving away the potential rambling of his.

" Great to meet ya. Name's D'angelo Schultz! And now we're not strangers!" A toothy grin and friendly thumbs up given in greeting alongside his name." And this gold-"

A sudden yelp as the cloud suddenly spun around until D'angelo was sitting upside against the cloud leaving Trinity with a view of Nimbus fnow floating head level." Ppbbt pbut... Nimbus! Give a headsup next time!" The pudgy male muttered out, spitting his shirt from his mouth, all the while dangling upside down; a faint rumbling from the cloud as if it was laughing. Having had its fun, the cloud spun to have him sitting upright like normal.

A soft yet clearly audible thump could be heard as D'angelo bobbed his golden companion with a small indent of knuckles left behind." O-one moment. Still dizzy here." A quick shake of the head and rub of the forehead." Guess you already met Nimbus. Sorry about that, this cheeky cloud likes messing with me at the most random times." A tsk of the tongue and disapproving gaze aimed at the cloud he sat.

A shrug of the shoulders afterwards." Anywho, the guild's leader's name is Jenna, who should still be inside." Pondering to himself for a moment, arms folded across his chest." She's quite the large woman too so she will be easy to find!" Nodding his head in hopes he had been adequately helpful.

" Wish I could stick around to be of more help, but our group will be leaving for a job soon, but good luck with Jenna." Finishing just in time as the doors opened with the very group mentioned coming out.

Before moving to meet up with them, he skidded to a stop part-way to float close to Trinity." By the way, that is an awesome instrument! I'd love to hear you play sometimes." A double thumbs up as Nimbus floated backwards to where the others were; letting him have his funny departure, the cloud did owe him.

With an excited double fist-pump." Alright! Let's go." D'angelo cheered before setting off towards the train station?!

" Ooooh a train! *gasp* ooh ooh! Guys! Can I try racing the train with Nimbus? Please please please?!" Asked the chubby male, both hands clasped together in a pleading manner.

It just never ended. Even after the group killed a whole pack of these things, there were more inbound. Nolan was confident that Ria and he would be able to fight through this and survive if it was just them, but the soldiers had to survive too. They could not fight and move the cargo, that much as clear. Something had to give, but they were getting nowhere quickly.

Nolan glanced over to the driver who asked what they were going to do and then to the corporal. With no warning, a hand of black ash turned the radio off and retracted back to the mage. That would be one way to get his attention.

Corporal, said Nolan sternly and then said, "I'll blast a path through the horde and when I do you all need to make a mad dash out of here. Ria and I will cover the rear while the rest of you push forward. Get your men ready and notify the drivers. That's an order."

The Slayer turned his attention to Ria who was probably freaking out inside, not that Nolan would know."Ria, try to limit the Asterin's mobility as much as possible. Use whatever spells that cover as much as possible."

Sure, it wasn't the most complex strategy, but it sure as hell was better than just being pinned down and waste their time and energy.

And so the adventure began! Ariel was overjoyed at the opportunity to supervise the young troop of mages. Being reasonably familiar with the city, it didn't take them long to arrive at the train station, and ahead of schedule! This was excellent, as being punctual would make a great impression of the guild.

I don't care!
Not yet.
What do you mean not yet?
So negative. This is the best chance at getting magic, and they're really nice!
Err... I gueeeeeess.
And I can't be alone forever. I need a pack.
We're not a pack.
Not with that attitude.

Her thoughts were interrupted a bit as D'Angelo floated down and excitedly asked about racing the train. Glancing at the train, she shrugged a bit. "I don't see why not. You're not on the job, so don't have to stay with the group the whole time. Sure." As a third party to the whole event, D'Angelo could do as he liked as far as Ariel was concerned.

That sidebar dealt with, Ariel clapped her hands to draw the attention of the others. "Alright everyone. So it looks like we have a little time to kill. I think this would be a good opportunity to introduce ourselves and share what everyone's magic is to make it easier to work together." She would put a hand on her chest. "My name is Ariel Gratas. My magic is a little weird, but the best way I can explain it is I copy magic. It has some strange effects on my personality, but it's been worth it so far. I think I have Fire, Water, and this one so far." She would smile and gesture to her wolf like features.

"So how about each of you. What kind of magic do you have?" She would look to each of them. She wasn't entirely sure how familiar everyone was with one another.

Good, this was the place, her hunch was accurate. She couldn't take too much credit, the clue was kind of obvious. Her new friend- friends were to thank for that. They were quite the pair. It didn't seem the cloud could talk, but what did she expect? A living cloud, though... Could make for an interesting song. The young lady gave a little giggle at the playful cloud as it flipped the duo over to introduce itself. She wanted to pet it but figured she'd have a better chance later. What did it even feel like? Was it solid, or was it D'Angelo's magic that made it solid? For that matter, how much of this was the man's magic? He didn't seem like the con-artist type, but they weren't a good con artist if you could tell that easy. Eh, whatever. What would the con even be, here?

At any rate, seemed like the man and his cloud were busy. Before they left, however, " By the way, that is an awesome instrument! I'd love to hear you play sometimes."

"I'm sure you'll get the chance. Good luck with the work, D'Angelo, Numbus." She waved as they left, the lyre starting to play again even as she did. The strings seemed to strum themselves. Using the same free hand for the door, Trinity entered the guild. She was passed by... someone with a tail? on her way in, but she only really had the moment to look for a moment before proceeding.

It didn't take her long to spot the large woman D'angelo had told her about. "Hello! You must be Jenna? I'm Trinity, I'm looking for a guild to recruit me. I was starting to think maybe I should go back south, haha."

Giving Jenna a brief and tired wave goodbye, presumably after she or someone else fixed up Akemi's attire so she was actually presentable and not walking around with half her stomach exposed, her shirt shifted sideways, and the buttons actually in the suitable holes, or at least in one seeing as every 2nd or third one hadn't been done. Because sure, while in the guild hall looking like a half-asleep mess was one thing, but meeting a client like that? Probably not a good first impression. And if no one fixed it? Well, Akemi sure as hell hadn't noticed, so she probably wouldn't unless it was at least pointed out.

As stated in the previous post, Akemi didn't stray far from Ariel or more specifically, her tail, the entire way there. Not that the wolf girl seemed to mind, after all, it would make keeping an eye on the pup far more manageable if she stayed close to her!

"Can anyone ride...umm...'Nimbus', or just you?" Akemi would ask now that they were there and having been told the clients weren't here yet, she decided to join in the small talk amongst the group. There was a couple of people here she wasn't familiar with after all, her gaze slowly scanning over the gathered members. "I wouldn't mind trying riding it...or maybe racing it? I can fly, but not much or for long yet...could be a good test of *yawn* speed?"

It seemed like a good idea to her, but entering second was...taxing. She couldn't quite freely transform that much just yet, but she was getting there. She also didn't mention the fact that she hadn't quite learned to fly yet, though she was capable of it the control was a different matter. But she was sure she could wing it.

"Akemi...Desdemona. I use ummm...I think its called 'Take over' magic? Specifically, I can...hmm....maybe I should just show?" Akemi reintroduced herself to the group, more because Ariel did than anyone else, but paused now and tapped her chin thoughtfully. It would be easier to just transform and show them after all. But that would also be a waste of energy and magic power. Eh, she could show them at a later date. She would just explain it poorly, and transform if anyone just wanted her to do that instead.

"I can temporarily...transform into an angel, or parts of myself into one. I use light magic with it, though I can use a little fire when I get stronger. If we get into a fight, I will protect everyone...ok? I'm not the strongest...but fighting is all I can do." Her gaze finally fell upon the new face she wasn't entirely familiar with yet in Amelia. But Jenna seemed to know her, and she was maybe about her age? About her height anyway. But her eyes lit up for a moment.

This was a chance to make a friend! Zen had always told her she needed to make some, especially around her own age. So this was a good first step! Plus, she was also a girl! So sure, there was also Ky, but she was already somewhat familiar with him and they got along fine. Enough that she at least considered him a friend.

"...friend?" Reaching a hand out to Amelia in a simple gesture, Akemi seemed to just jump several steps and straight to asking the question in such a straight forward and blunt manner that it was about as subtle as punching a brick wall. But she got excited sometimes, and tended to forget there was a process to things. But Amelia could at least tell that Akemi was a friendly girl, even if a bit...eccentric. But hey, every mage was eccentric, so it came with the turf!

There was still that lingering tension between Mark and the Sargeant, but Adelyn decided it was best not to comment on it. She didn't know why these details got him all worked up, but hey at least it showed he cared? It should be a lot easier to get this job done if people actually cared about it after all. Plus, it was somewhat comforting...in a way? At least, for the nervy lightning mage who was second guessing herself, as usual. Was doing this job really the right decision? She wouldn't hold them back, right? Of course she wouldn't, she was an Amberfield. If anything, they were the ones who would hold her back!

...or so she was trying to tell herself, but not even she was buying it.

It was already a struggle trying to get up into the saddle honestly. She certainly would need a hand, and she was glad to be wearing shorts over a skirt but even still, she seemed to not find the ride all that pleasant or comfortable. She hadn't really gotten to ride a horse, nor had a need to before. Carriage driven by horses? Sure, but not physically riding one. Though perhaps it was that or the nerves, but her companions sure as hell didn't care for she seemed to stay within the confines of her own mind the whole time there, not really uttering a word but didn't grumble something every now and then as she shifted in the saddle.

Coming to a stop at a tree, she noted the rather...well crude set up. Just a simple ladder? What if something else went up it? Oh well, it wasn't really Adelyns concern. No, she had bigger concerns as she nervously began to look round the area. It seemed like the further into the forest they had gone, the more nervous she had become really. But it was too late to go back, and even if it wasn't, her pride refused to let her back down. Not till she proved it.

"So uh...anyone got anything that could help with this? I imagine not....I know I don't have anything. So uh, hmmm. I guess our only real course of action is try and sneak in? That way we can try and get eyes on what we're dealing with first rather than sticking our necks out into danger? I would also rather not risk the horses otherwise the trek back will be hell, plus they're not exactly built for stealth. Also uhh...on the previous note of anyone having anything that could help, guess we should establish what we use and can do?"

Why couldn't she ever manage to attack when she wanted to? Surely this was life or death enough. So why was it she could only manage to cast offensive magic when she was fighting Azria. Thankfully her defensive stuff worked just fine and she could help with the fight at least. It's not like anyone knew she could do offensive spells, nothing beyond using make-weapons anyway. So the good news was: she wasn't disappointing anyone.

Ria's gaze followed the ash hand from the truck to Nolan, arching a brow. That was quite the articulated spell for a basic ash mage. Maybe he was a maker mage too. That'd be something. The guild could use some more of those. Right now wasn't the time for thinking on that though. She could hear more Asterins in the brush and they needed to be ready.

When the older mage turned his attention to her, the water mage focused on him. Limit the Asterins mobilities as much as possible. Use whatever spells can do as much as possible. She took a breath. She had spells like those, but to do the most good those would both need to be maintained. It was a terribly tall order to try to maintain both. First one as broad as I can then maintain the other... She nodded, smiling softly. "Yes, okay. This might feel a bit weird, everyone, but I won't be adding anything to you. Just...helping you navigate these spells."

She settled into properly sitting in the saddle and cast the first spell. Obscuring Mist rolled from her hands, extended above her head. The heavy fog to billowed out and spreading as far as she could feel in all directions. Sure, heavy enough winds could force it away, but for now it was neigh impenetrable vision wise. At least, for the Asterins. Her hands descended as if to push the billowing cloud out further around them. Her focus turned to each person, where she knew they were, once the mist reached its limits. For each, the mist would seem to part, but the feel of heavy moisture in the air would still be noticeable if they were accustomed to walking through heavy morning fog (so long as they weren't in the trucks).

Her attention turned from those she was defending to those she was against. This wasn't as easy (not that targeting multiple people with her other spell was easy) a task as the other one given she has very limited view of the targets for this one. But still, she pressed to try to find targets, instead giving up to focus on giving weight to the plants around them. Undertow dragged at each, aimed at turning them all into a proverbial current to pull anything that crossed them away from the path the group drove on.

Hopefully it worked.

Interactions: Adelyn @Lunarlord34, Kiba @Cello, Sergeant Monreu @Zarkun

It seemed they had an understanding. Mark wasn't sure what the man found funny, but they weren't wasting time discussing trivialities any longer. He took it as an understanding. Of course, when he expressed making sure everyone came back safely, he hadn't exactly envisioned it being horses as the other garrison members he would be ensuring were safe. It didn't change the sentiment regardless; or, perhaps it rather reinforced it. He certainly wasn't willing to let one of these beautiful beasts fall to harm if he could help it, and they were just as vital a member of the force as any of the actual guardsmen.

The smallest of smiles ticked onto his lips as he stood beside the mount he would ride. His hand glided over the soft hairs of the neck before stroking the fuzz of its muzzle. Any trace of a smile vanished when he heard Adelyn's struggle just to get up into the saddle though. With a soft sigh, he walked over and boosted her into it and tossed the reins to her before heading back over to swiftly mount his. Another few strokes of the mount's neck, and he prompted the beast to follow after the Sergeant.

Thankful, the lightning girl kept quiet for the ride out of the outpost and into the forest. Nothing was more tiresome than idle chatter. There was enough to look at and study for the ride out anyway. Noting markings on the ground, the look of particular trees as they passed, even noteworthy rocks or bushes - all would be helpful if for some reason something required them navigating back with an unconscious Sergeant in tow.

"Very well." That was all Mark said, with a slight nod, before the Sergeant started his climb up to his post. A vantage point like that meant it was easier to remember anyway. In case he needed to suddenly report here to help. So much to note, and keep track of. But the Sergeant was right - dismounting would likely be best. From all the hunting books he read, and the few times he tried his hand at the concept, it was better to limit the scent signatures. Cover it with something more natural was best - like mud or something - but he wasn't exactly intending to go through that amount of effort for what could ultimately turn into a fight. Traveling from downwind would be best too. That was perhaps the easier thing to do.

He dismounted and looked to the others. After Adelyn finally stopped rambling, he nodded and dismounted as smoothly as he mounted. "Yes, do not risk the horses." Of course, on the topic of if they had anything they could do to get them in easily...He had one spell in mind but was it worth the energy? Two miles north in a grotto was a rough estimate, There was the potential he miscalculated and they ended up directly on the thing. That would still provide the element of surprise but it would be just as jarring for them as the beast. There were too many variables to be confident in using Void Step, and the experience would certainly be too jarring for at least the girl.

No, there was only one real course of action. Sneaking in to take this beast on would be no different than when he would sneak up to observe some of the beasts near his home as a child. There were certain things you did and didn't do to be quiet. This was new wilderness to him, for the most part given how much of a bother it was to get all the way out here, but it was still the same principles. Which meant hunting the beast would just be an elevation to scientific observation.

"We will need to go on foot. Single file. Walk carefully. Avoid dry twigs and leaves as much as possible. It will conserve our energy for the fight, and if we can remain downwind it will give us the ability to observe what we will face. Hopefully that will give us the advantage." He set to ensuring his mount was safe and steady beside Sergeant's before looking back at the others. "I can take point. Kiba, can you take rear?."

As the group got ready to begin their trek to the beast's last known location, the Sergeant reached the top of the tree, where the platform and small outpost that resided in it were found. His spotter and second in command of his usual squad was already in position, communicating with the garrison as things progressed, though she ended the conversation when he arrived. "Sergeant, good to see things went accordingly." Monreu grunted as he started to set up his rifle.

"Almost didn't, as one of the mages wasn't too keen on the idea of a sniper watching their backs at first. Suppose I can't blame him, with relations with most of the garrison being what they are." His SIC snorted.

"They should consider themselves lucky that we haven't chased them and their bloody foreign guild out of Rembrandt already. Fiorans are no-" A cold look from the sergeant silenced Corporal Weaver instantly.

"You're a fucking member of the Pergrande Military, Rembrandt Township Garrison. Damn well act it. But we can discuss that outburst after the mission is done. Keep your rank and job in mind, Corporal." The way her rank was mentioned was filled with venomous ice and she could only nod and take up her spotting position, mentally cursing herself for her breach in protocol.

Urgent Delivery-Rendezvous

The Corporal opened his mouth to argue when a loud hissing roar echoed through the forest, reaching the group inside the mist and almost seeming to vibrate the very air. The swarm hissed loudly in response, still trying desperately to force their way past the plants, before they all faded away, assumably with disappointment. One of the guards dropped his visor over his eyes and it glowed briefly before he raised it with a sigh of relief. "Thermals are clear, the beasts pulled back. That was likely the Alpha we heard, calling them back. That...worries me..."

Corporal Nalen looked around, counting the heads of everyone present and nodded to himself before turning to Nolan and turning the radio back on. "I know we agreed to follow your lead, but kindly refrain from messing with our communications." He resumed speaking with whoever was on the other side, and the conversation quickly became heated again. PFC Tanson rode over to Nolan and sighed as he signaled they were all clear to the drivers as the two members of the Guard had their visors down, the glow from earlier that had been on Tanson's visor showing as to allow them to more easily see through the mist and foliage.

"Don't mind the Corporal, as he's the commanding officer for us Guardsmen on this, so he's getting a lot of heat. He'd been trying to get some artillery support or see if one of the officer's could call in a favor with some of their..." he hesitates and seems to struggle to find the right words before continuing, "some friends that could have helped quickly." It was clear there was information he was under either orders or oath to withhold, likely due to the sensitivity it had to keeping Pergrande's military secrets exactly that. "Now he has to pass off you switching off the comms unit as a brief malfunction on our end. Just...be easy on him. We're all stressed, especially since we know there's actually an Alpha out there..."

As the group interacted, unbeknownst to them, another group of three had followed them from the guild hall, wearing combat armor from Pergrande, though it wasn't like that of the town guards, it seemed more advanced and the helmets enclosed the entirety of their faces. One of them spoke quietly into a radio while they observed them. "Aye, just some younger members and a couple of newer ones. They all pass the test on power, nothing too crazy, just like you'd expect." They fall silent as the voice on the other side says something more extensive and then sighs. "Sir, with all due respect, this is just an escort job, I doubt anything crazy will happen. A couple of the mages do look more than capable, so if anything does happen, we might not even need to intervene." Another tirade before they can speak again. "Of course, we'll maintain observation pattern and continue reporting back."

It was several minutes after the group bound for the escort job had left that another mage approached the giant of a guild master, who was in the midst of arranging for a meeting with the town Garrison's commander to discuss steps to further repair relations between the town and the guild, a task that was proving monumental, though not impossible. When she spoke up, Jenna looked down at her and smiled warmly. "A pleasure, Miss Trinity. And I'd be happy to have you, though, I am curious as how you heard about us. Ria had quickly set up series of spells to deal damage to the Asterins in a wide swath, but then there was something else. A loud, hissing roar echoed through the forest and then the Asterins begrudgingly retreated from the fray. Normally, this would have been left with relief for normal people. For Nolan, he gritted his teeth and mumbled a series of curses underneath his breath. This was the worst possible situation. If the Asterins were not called back, they could have broken through and get away from the fight, but now they were vulnerable for another surprise attack at any point of the journey.

Nolan heaved a sigh and let his body relax. There was no benefit to getting worked up. A clear head was needed, especially when dealing with the highly stressed-out soldiers. He glanced at the Corporal who went back to arguing to whoever was on the other side. Again, there was no point in trying to argue with him. Tensions were high enough as they were. Well, that and Tanson explained to him the pressure that the corporal was under. This was something that had not escaped Nolan, however. It would have been weird that he was not under any pressure given the circumstances.

He looked at PFC Tanson with his typically bored, cold look and said, "If you have time to worry about what I think, then you have time to rest. I'm gonna talk to the corporal." The young monk glanced towards Ria and motioned her with his hand to follow him. The man was either still futilely trying to get backup. or was dejected, or both.

"You're wasting your time. If they had the resources for backup, then Ria and I wouldn't be here." He approached the corporal as delicately as a sledgehammer to a brick wall. "Look, I get it. You've got a lot to worry about and me turning off the coms only made things complicated. However, I will not apologize for what I did. I needed your attention to convey a plan and if it meant getting you and your men to safety then I would gladly do it again. However, that doesn't matter anymore."

He crossed his arms and looked at him with absolutely no remorse because that was a situation that they needed to move away from to deal with what was ahead. "You need artillery, and we can provide it, but we can't fire blindly. So, let's plan." Nolan was not going to insult the corporal's intelligence by recapping the many shades of shit they were in. They needed a plan or else they were going to get possibly jumped by an Alpha or whatever the hell was ordering those lizards around.

Wow. The woman was maaaaassive. Good thing the young lady was done appreciating the woman's size by the time it was her turn to speak, at least. "I didn't hear anything so much as I saw some clues. A caravan just left town, accompanied by a guard squad but also individuals out of uniform. I would guess mages, but I could be wrong." It was a reasonable assumption, but there were other possibilities. "Then I saw your flying cloud man, D'Angelo. That's a dead giveaway, right there, sure as shoot," she chuckled.

"I suppose you'd like to know about my magic?" Trinity lightly tossed her lute over her shoulder, only for it to float into the air immediately as it left her hand, now played and held by nothing more than her magic as she conjured more into her hands. Trinity moulded, in her hands, a golden light into a saucer shape before she positioned it upright. A moment later, it would project a soft synthesizer sound, playing undertones to her lute. "Instruments are my domain, as well as the golden glow of my moulding magic."

"So, what kind of work can I expect around these parts, anyway?"
