Chase had had a chat with Uncle Matt? Oh god of course he tried the safe sex talk with Chase too. He felt wildly embarrassed, and his ears were suddenly very hot. Chase pulled Ben through the shadows and things got insane very quickly.

Ben recognized several of the people from the Contest. This was basically all team Excelsior, Marlena, and someone he didn't recognize. Ben knew they were all friends with Danni but that didn't make him any less nervous. He felt a little like an interloper and hung back a bit, which was probably a good thing as Danni became a pillar of fire.

One of the guys pulled out a fire extinguisher, Ben made a mental note that he might want to keep one of those too, and put Danni out. He then stepped back and stood between Chase and a younger looking guy. He looked pissed... at Chase. Was it because of the fire thing?

Ben saw how the fire extinguisher guy blocked the younger guy. And more importantly his angle showed him the younger guy's face. He was scared... of Chase? And not because of the fire.

His stomach rolled, they knew Chase and didn't like him. That was what Chase meant. Danni seemed to think it wouldn't be an issue but it was.

Chase had gone over to the hot chocolate stand and was stacking an absurd amount of things into and on his cup. He apparently didn't notice that his jacket sleeve was on fire.

Cascade, Danni's sister, tried to do something to put Chase out but was failing. Ben stepped forward and grabbed Chase's arm shoving into a pile of snow. Hopefully Chase didn't spill any of his overloaded hot chocolate. His heart was pounding. He wished he was the teleporter and could leave whatever was happening because it was not going to be good. He looked between Chase and the others nervously.

The young guy confirmed what Ben was thinking. Something had happened between them. They knew each other. Chase knew Danni's friends wouldn't like him and he didn’t warn him. His stomach twisted more. This guy... he was Emrys. The one Chase would say would call him an evil wizard. A warning would have been nice.

”Uh, hi,” he cleared his throat. ”I’m Ben. Does anyone want to explain what is going on? What haven't you told me?” He really hoped someone would explain the history he was missing out on. The second question was directed at Chase, concern on his face.

What had happened? And more importantly why had Chase kept that from him? He knew this was a possibility and didn't tell him. Ben wouldn't call it a lie... he hadn't asked about why Chase thought Danni's friends wouldn't like him. And that was on him he supposed.

Andy was laughing as she hit the snow pack and joined Victoria in the snow field. Victoria had peppered the opposing team with snow, it came down upon them like a tide. She made a snow ball.

Andy was on the beach of Genosha. Ahead of her The Green Lagoon. Blob, slid her a drink, and she felt like she needed it. She waved to him.

”Hey, Blob. How’s it going?” She picked up the drink and sipped it. It was ice cold. Perfect. Andy sighed. Relief flooded through her. Tension she had been carrying drifted away. She wasn’t scared. The troubles of Genosha were in the past.

She saw a group of students from Akademos, they were chatting animatedly. Andy knew them, they were part of the island defense team she had set up with Magneto. She started walking to join them.

Something about the sand felt wrong. She paused, looking at her feet. She wasn’t walking on the beach. It was snow. Why was there snow? And then she remembered.

Her heart broke a little as the world shifted and she was back at Margaret Carter Academy. She had never gotten a chance to set up the island defense team. And Genosha was gone, though repaired again. But the world she remembered had been destroyed.

She clenched her hand, the snow ball she had apparently been shoving in her face fell apart.

”I’m gonna kick your ass!” She yelled, and picked up more snow and started to throw snow balls at Xènia.

Thank god that Leah had a hot girl she could distract herself from the other hot girl. An arm went around Sabine as Leah stooped down and planted a kiss on her forehead. It seemed everyone was converging on the hot chocolate. And, notably, on her. Danni wasted no time in latching onto her like a leech on a bleeding wound. Both he and April were all over her sword, and Leah couldn’t help but crack up at the thought of either of them trying to lift it off the ground. It was heavier than a person, taller than her, and she only had the ability to swing it around because of how damn strong she was.

”When I first held it, it spoke to me. Not with words, exactly, it just… I just knew. Calls itself Sjafnamarr. Thousand-Faced Rose. Thor’s got Mjolnir, I’ve got this.” The blade of the sword caught the sunlight in weird ways, like a kaleidoscope. Every glint was a different expression of the same image. Leah drummed her fingers on the hilt, watching that Chase boy stack a hot chocolate cup to heaven. How the fuck did someone drink that?

She didn’t get to ask, before Danni fucking burst into flames.

”Fuck-“ Leah took a step back, she really didn’t want her hair burning. Certainly not her fucking jacket, either. Chase, being so chummy with Danni, also got lit up. For a moment, she considered dumping hot chocolate on them both since April seemed to be slow today. Then someone came in with a fire extinguisher, because of course, in a school full of superkids, why did no one ever just grab a damn fire extinguisher?

”Damn, good save.” She waved a bit of smoke out of her face. It smelled like microplastics. ”Okay, shit, anybody get burned? I got some healing magic worked out lately.”

Marlena froze up when one of April’s brothers fucking exploded. Holy shit, holy shit- Thank god someone else swooped in to put fire out. Ben swooped in and stuck Chase’s fire in the snow. Which probably wasn’t the best move, but Marlena wasn’t sure what she’d do, the snow around them was fake probably made of polystyrene or some glitter-adjacent plastic. It was a surprise, Danni seemed to have a handle on his powers when he was in the Contest last month. Or maybe he didn’t need control when he was busy kicking ass?

”Heh, hey Ben-“ Marlena chuckled out of nervous tension. She glanced between him and Chase. It seemed like there was a bit of drama going on that she wasn’t aware of. Chase apparently had some cards he didn’t set down on the table. ”Okay, that’s enough surprises for one day, you think? Anybody wanna show me around, throw a snowball or two at me?”

She didn’t know those boys long, but Marlena liked them. Liking people was easy when you were Marlena Evans. Maybe they needed a bit of privacy to sort out whatever they were dealing with. And the short guy seemed like he was about to have an aneurism if he didn’t get away from Chase right now.

Chase Bernard

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Festival
Magic Items:
First Day Fit: Flannel, Jeans, and Vans

Chase had hardly noticed when his sleeve caught on fire. The flames running up his flannel on his arm as it ate away at the fabric. It was then, as he was pulled low, that he finally noticed Percy within the crowd. No longer blocked by Danni's body, or overshadowed by Leah's height. And the look on his face? It broke Chase. It was a direct mirror to the expression he had the first time that Chase had gotten physical with Percy. The first time he'd started bullying. He hated it back then, and he hated it now. That sense of betrayal, it rocked him to his core. Especially knowing the look was directed past him and onto Danni. Danni didn't deserve this, Danni didn't do anything wrong. And after many sessions Chase now knew, neither had Percy.

Chase hadn't removed his arm from the snow yet, hadn't dared moved from the spot where he saw his old friend with new fears. Ones caused by him. He wanted to throw up. He wanted to run. He wanted to yell and scream and blame the world. He wanted to tell Ben that he warned him, that he was a monster and that Ben belonged with the heroes before him and not Chase. He wanted to burn every bridge he'd built and vanish. But he couldn't. He didn’t truly want any of that. He wanted to belong, to talk to Percy about their past, to stay with Ben and have dinner at Matt's and enjoy Danni's cooking and be in stupid cuddle piles.

Ben's voice cut through the mental fog as more daggers dug into Chase's heart. Twisting and digging deeper with every word. It felt as though the floor was finally falling out from beneath his feet, as if he'd be left alone all over again. Chase thought to himself how stupid he must be to even begin to think that he could change or belong. That's when Ben's voice cut in once again, a mental scolding about how his feelings aren't stupid and they matter. His head spun, he felt lightheaded, and so Chase slowly lowered himself fully into the snow, sitting, hot chocolate long since spilled and abandoned beside him. Danni had said a lot, Danni hadn't said everything, nor could he speak for him.

When Chase looked up and saw that Leah was even threatening to pummel him, he wished she would. That was more familiar than this silence and waiting. ”Please don't take it out on Danni Boi over here. He grilled me the second he found out, he's only ever had your best interest at heart…Percival.” A familiar scene for Ben, a familiar broken tone within Chase's voice as they danced around another one of those dark pits he didn't like to talk about. His hand wanted to hold Ben's, to find strength within him, but he wasn't sure if Ben would even dare to touch him after all this, and he wouldn't blame him. ”And you're right Benny Boi, I haven't told you everything. I promise I will by days end, some of it here and some in private. Percival knows the details, but it doesn't mean everyone else should. Not on that matter.”

If Chase could become pale, he would've been. His legs pulled up close to his chest as he wrapped his arms around his knees, eyes wet with tears that he tried to hold back. He sniffled before continuing. ”Percival and I used to go to school together. I've known him for years, decades even, there isn't really a time in my life that I can't recall him by my side. We did everything together, the closest of friends, and a life without him…I couldn't imagine it. Everything changed on Valentines day however. He uh…he confessed his feelings to me. How he felt about me, how it was more than just friendship. I uh, I didn't know how to take it or even how to respond. I didn't even know I liked guys for Merlin's sake…we still talked, just not about that. Later that week he left the program we were in. I panicked. I thought, well heh…I thought I took too long to respond to the letter, thought id ruined the friendship and thrown it all away just because I couldn't figure out how to say something that feels so simple now…all I needed to say was ‘Percival I love you, just not the way that you want me to.’ “

Chase was choking back tears, the knot in his throat making it difficult to speak as he placed all his cards down for everyone to see. He looked directly at Percy as he spoke the last lines, and from there he dared not break eye contact. ”You were my best friend, my brother, and I loved you, I still love you. I never stopped even when I thought I did. I was so afraid that if I told you that that you would leave me anyways, and then you left the GATES program, and I – fuck, I did the only thing I knew how, the only thing I'd been shown how…I'm so sorry, I'm so so sorry for everything I did and I know it doesn't mean shit and it doesn't change anything and I cant take back the things that I did or said and I dont deserve forgiveness. I know I'm this fucking monster, but I –” Chase began to speak in-between sobs, his breathing became erratic, and he looked like he was on the verge of an anxiety attack, but he pushed past it all he needed to say these things to clear the air.

Chase buried his face into his knees and let out a pained scream within the sobs. He cried for a moment, his jeans now soaked from tears, before he finally looked back up at Percy, the sides of his nose were red his eyes more so. ”I wanted so many times to reach back out to you, to talk to you, but I was so certain you'd changed your number or or or blocked me or I made up so many scenarios in my head of how it would go down and I convinced myself that it would never work out and –” Another burst of sobs escaped him as he tried his best to get his breathing back into order. ”Fuck! Just – hit me, yell at me! Do whatever you have to! Just say something!” His face buried into his knees once more as he continued to sob quietly as his energy quickly left and he felt numb.

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Carnival
Magic Items: None
Sabine First Day Fit: Plum Top, Black Fluffy Jacket with Gold Embellishments, Dark Blue Jeans, Dark Purple Boots
Millicent First Day Fit: Twisted School Girl

It was supposed to be a fun carnival.

Millicent embraced Dorian, squeezing him so tight. It had truly been so long since they were together. "Dorian! I am so beyond thrilled to be here with you! And Danni! And April! Big family reunion up in here!"

While Millie had a nice reunion with beloved family members, Sabine bit her lip and thought about all the ways she was blessed with found family. "No, Percy, we had enough of that over break. But a cute birthday post can't hurt. And I won't make you wear animal ears or a tail this go-around, how about that?"

It was supposed to be a fun carnival.

The tone of it all shifted. Sabine could feel something. It wasn't so much anything physical, but emotional. Mental. Spiritual. She looked around to see what had changed. Did someone spike the hot chocolate? Did a kid get hit in the face with an ice-filled snowball?

And then Danni was on fire. And the boy from before, the one Sabine had met, flirted with, and threatened with a lobotomy, appeared. And he was also on fire.

Panic ensued as the lot of them scampered around trying to help. April had managed to get Amelie away. The others got to work, helping both of them out. Danni was safely extinguished and Chase was put out shortly after with a fire extinguisher. There was a brief lull as people composed themselves, as best they could in the moment.

It was supposed to be a fun carnival.

Millicent had no idea how to help. But it seemed everyone was okay. Or as okay as could be expected physically, at least. "Everyone cool? Do we need a moment to maybe step away? Take some deep breaths?" She didn't know the history before she strode up to everyone, but it didn't take a superpowered empath to know there was some anger, sadness, fear, all mixing amongst this group. It seemed to her that Chase, her roommate, had a history with Percy and, by extension, some residual anger from the others, like Leah. And one of the other new kids, Ben, was just as confused as her, probably more so. But Millicent knew this wasn't her tale to tell, and it would, perhaps, be best if those impacted handled it on their own.

Sabine, however, was reeling.

Sabine listened as Percy broke down, wondering how it could have gone so wrong that Danni had befriended Chase, to one of the new kids she hadn't met before, but was clearly with Chase, being confused, to Chase essentially on his hands and knees, begging for forgiveness or to be punched in the face.

Sabine found herself back in her childhood. She had grown up privileged, but that didn't mean she didn't face her own demons. How long was she labeled a villain for doing nothing? How often was she put in situations where, no matter what she did or said, she was labeled as wrong, evil, a freak? Her own family, aside from her mother (and she was still reeling from that dream), had seen her as a liability, something to contain and hold. Society painted her a villain; Leah and Dorian thought of her as such before she got to know them.

Sabine's journey with her sexuality was tamer than most. She knew early on that she did not really care if it was a boy or a girl. But she still struggled with the wording. Her first kiss was with a girl, but the girl said it was only a test and that she didn't fancy girls. The next was a boy who only did so as a dare. She was a weirdo, and the boy lost the best. Eventually, she had come to terms with the fact that she needed something more. Something tangible, emotionally, with those she was interested in. It was why Leah was so great and things with April...well, they didn't pander to much in the long run. And that was on her.

To hear Chase tell it, he seemed to struggle with a lot of things internally. That struggle lashed out on someone he cared about. It wasn't an excuse, but it was an explanation. Chase had been dealing with this for a long time. Sabine didn't blame Danni on confronting him and finding a friend in the end; he had that superpower. She also could not blame Percy for being hurt seeing someone he cared for get close to another who hurt him so deeply, even unintentionally.

And now they, as a group, were almost here playing judge, jury, and executioner with Chase. That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. This was not their story to tell; their place was in the background, allowing the parties involved to lay it out and come to some reconciliation. Sabine felt herself welling up, but she didn't want to take away from Chase or Percy or Ben. So she remained silent. Chase needed someone on his side, though. He needed someone to tell him he had an ally, someone who understood where he had been and where he was.

Sabine closed her eyes and sent off a telepathic connection to Chase. She wanted to be careful, knowing the last time she did this she ended up hurting someone and being permanently connected to another, but she managed to get a solid hold.

"Chase, it's Sabine. Don't freak out, I am communicating telepathically. I want you to know that I understand, I get it. I've been in your shoes before. This is between you and Percy and I didn't want to take it away from you all. Just know, I see you, I hear you. And I am here to talk about it if you need someone."

Sabine broke the bond and opened her eyes. The tension still there.

This was supposed to be a fun carnival.

Victoria van Dyne

Location: F̴̞͘ä̴̱i̶͚͆r̷̭̀ ̷̫̏g̵͓͊ŗ̶̾o̵͜͠u̷̢̽n̸̬̄d̸̙͗s̶̙͐ ̴̣̇>̴̮͊ ̴̘̂Ŭ̴͈n̷̘͛ķ̷̋n̸͉̚ò̵͍w̷̰͗ṉ̵̉
Equipment / items: Multi-field generators
Powers / skills: Unarmored hand to hand combat
Mood music: Oomph! - Labyrinth

In the brief moment Victoria heard the siren's song, it failed to register. If her core was still an independent system, perhaps Ultron would have flagged the inconsistency in her behavior and snap her out of the illusion.

But Ultron wasn't there anymore, and Xènia opened a Pandora's box.

What Victoria desired the most was for her choices to be her own.

The code that bound her to Admin's will was gone. Arcade was reformed and doing time. Ultron was purged from her system. So the illusion coalesced into the only thing Victoria was still aware of pulling her strings.

One moment she was in the snow field, and in another the field was all but forgotten, as the world shifted and a new reality set in.

She was inside of a black void, containing nothing but a bridge leading to what she could, in the loosest of terms, describe as some kind of machine. A machine that seemed to weave together some sort of energy. And standing in front of it...

Nemo?

A memory of something the man said came to the forefront of her mind: How the TVA dictates the timeline, and what events are permitted to happen.

She understood where she was. Damned if she remembered how she got there, but it didn't matter - She would never have another chance like this! Her skin migrated the generators from her left hand to her shoulder blades, setting into the familiar position. Her fists clenched so hard they turned white, and if Sabine wasn't wearing her ring, she'd be flooded by Victoria's feelings of hatred and rage.

This was the last leash still put on her. Right in front of her! Charge! Break the machine! Exterminate those self righteous bastards! her mind - and the siren's song - commanded.

An enraged bellow split the air at the snow field: "I'm not your puppet, time fuckers! I write my own story!"

Boosters firing, hand crackling with an electric discharge, Vicky leapt to break the machine, and turn Nemo into a mortadella mist cloud if he stood in her way...

...right at where Xènia stood.

Dorian Gray

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Festival
Magic Items: Anti-telepathy Sword, Percy sex bracelet, KG bracelet (whaaaat? Where'd that come from. Weird)
First Day Fit: Teal Long Sleeve Shirt, Lightwash Jeans, Black Bandana around his neck, and the Excelsior Jacket

Dorian had hardly noticed the new kid, apparently his name was Ben. Standing by Chase's side and having helped take the flames off his flannel. But the look on Ben's face told him everything, and suddenly it was as if Dorian was back within that meeting. Danni trying to explain to them that this was another villain in need of redemption. Everyone deserved a second chance, Dorian knew that, the Kingston-Gray's knew that, and it took this small boy who to some extent did remind him of Percy, to see that he needed to check himself. The way he was looking at Dorian, it told him everything he needed to know, he wasn't giving Chase a second chance, he had already made his decision before even listening to the man's pleas, and now that decision was hurting someone else.

Dorian's look softened. The anger melting away to give way to shame and embarrassment at his own actions. He'd assumed the worst of someone he only knew from stories, granted they were his boyfriend's stories and he believed and trusted in him, but it was also the past. A hero should allow others to forge a new path, to head towards redemption (save for Selene), and here Dorian was trying to blockade it. He needed to figure out how to be the hero he dreams of being while also the boyfriend that Percy needs, and right now it felt like such a razor thin line. Dorian looked down at the snow, then at Percy, he knew this was going to happen, he just wished it could wait a day.

Morning - Sat. January 15th, 2039 - Los Angeles, California

@Forsythe@Kirah: While in her mind’s eye, Vicky valiantly sent off her onslaught, defeating the time traveling menace… in the real world, she was just walking forward, heading towards Xenia without an ounce of awareness. She had not broken free of the song, and it would be a poor siren to allow their prey to attack them once in their clutches. Instead, Xenia’s allies took advantage of the android’s distraction, pelting her with a small hail of snowballs - and perhaps it was this physical reminder of the real world that was enough to snap Vicky out of it, for real this time, as she found herself halfway to becoming a snowman.

Gideon, too, found her thoughts clearing, with disappointment. She had really liked that fantasy. She’d been so cool and strong and tough in it - and as much as she liked challenging people to fights here, the idea of fighting people from all over the universe was enticing. However, she managed to hear her girlfriend scream about kicking Xenia’s ass, and Gideon was more than happy to join in.

She started scooping up snowballs, and had the brilliant idea to use her nearly six foot tall, two-handed sword as a baseball bat. She took it off her shoulder, removing it from its sheath, and grabbed the first few balls - she tossed them up into the air, and swung as fast as she could once she got a good grip…

And by a stroke of luck, she hit them.

Unfortunately, she hit them with the sharp end.

Cutting them in half.

The Unity Squad cackled. “Nice going, ya bimbo!”

Percy Novikov

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Festival
Magic Items: Mystery watch from Agatha Harkness, Dorian sex bracelet
First Day Fit: Black Hoodie, Jeans, and Vans

Percy was quiet, listening to Danni as he requested.

When distressed, his instincts turned to fight or flight. He could stand his ground, yell and shout, pick up the nearest blunt implement and charge, turning an emotional conflict into a physical one. Or he could run away, remove himself from the situation, avoid the problem by teleporting anywhere else - even across the country, now, or just skip an hour into the future, preventing even another teleporter from immediately finding him. He remembered reading a paper once that suggested mutant powers manifested based on personality types - if so, then his teleportation was his avoidance.

He didn’t want to yell at Danni - he didn’t want to fight him. He was terrified that it had happened again - that he had let himself be vulnerable with someone and they had taken advantage of it, intentionally or not. He wanted to put his defenses back up, to shut him out, to tell himself that he didn’t need the friendship, that he was fine, that closeness with other people was a want and not a need. It would have been easier that way.

My little treasure, they are your friends, right?

They aren’t mean to me. Andy stood up for me yesterday. I think the others only care about me as an extension of Dorian, though.

He didn’t want to go back to that.

Percy held onto Dorian a little tighter, his tears obscuring his vision - he could just vaguely see the outline of where Danni was, clothed all in black, as his best friend explained it all to him, how he had run repeatedly into Ben, how he had started talking to Chase, how he’d realized Ben’s boyfriend was the same person who had tormented him. He didn’t know how to feel about Danni’s description that he and Ben were the same person - but he cried a little harder at the reasoning as to why.

T'ey're bot’ a smol and a cute and kinda lonely and t'at makes ya immediately wanna protect.

Danni wanted to protect him.

He took a shuddering breath, still quiet as Danni continued - as Danni talked about confronting Chase and how Chase had wanted to do better. Percy wished that was true. He’d wanted it to be true, that day back in New Orleans. It hadn’t been. His insides felt all twisted up, and before he could come to the painful conclusion that this had all been planned without him, that they were going to force him to confront Chase before he was ready, that his opinions didn’t matter, that he was just an accessory to the group and not a full member of it… Danni addressed that, too.

They were supposed to talk to him about it - even give him the space and time to get upset. It was supposed to be his choice for any of this to happen. And that it wasn’t just the Kingston-Gray urge to redeem a villain, but Danni wanting to help him - Danni wanting to lessen this pain. Danni called him his best friend.

Percy shut his eyes tightly for a moment, struggling to regain any bit of composure - to keep the tears as quiet as he could, before they could become agonizing wails. He opened them again, about to respond to Danni - to tell him that he wasn’t angry, that he was hurt but it was alright, he still wanted to be his friend - but another voice started speaking before he could, urging him to not hold any of this against Danni.

Chase.

Calling him Percival.

Just like he used to.

He was on the ground, still. Percy felt cold as he tore his gaze away from Danni to look at Chase, forcing himself to really look at him. Or at least, he tried. But all he saw as he looked at Chase were memories he wished were gone, memories he didn’t dare to lose. A week after the confession, when Percy had thought Chase was going in for a hug, and instead found himself thrown against the wall. The day they’d gone to the pier and the fortune teller had told them they’d been friends for lifetimes, and Chase had believed her wholeheartedly. A punch directly to his eye, leaving him battered and bruised. Trips to the Griffith Observatory, Percy whispering the names of all the constellations in the star show to him and recounting the myths. Being tossed into lockers repeatedly, each one a size smaller than the last, to see when he would no longer fit. Playing with wooden swords in the park near Percy’s house, until the street lights went on and they were due home for dinner. Chase bullying him. Chase protecting him. Chase being his worst nightmare, the monster that stalked him through the halls of the school. Chase being the closest thing he had to a brother, spending more nights at Percy’s house than at his own.

As Chase’s confession, his recollection turned to the events of Valentine’s Day, Percy’s grip on Dorian tightened, almost painfully so. “Думаю, сегодня я рискую сорваться,” he mumbled. That had been part of his coping strategy, when emotions were too much, when things were overwhelming - when Chase was involved. He had drank for the first time that day, when he’d come home from school, crying and scared and guilty and afraid - when it had all been too much, when he didn’t understand how he could be so unlovable that his best friend would turn against him, when he didn’t understand why he deserved to be beaten and bruised for expressing how he felt. So he had drank until the feelings stopped - until the world was a hazy stupor - until his mothers found him, and he had been too ashamed to tell them the truth, to tell them that he had lost his only friend and he only had himself to blame.

He didn’t want to hold eye contact with him.

He didn’t want to see the broken shards of his friend looking back at him.

He found eye contact unbearable in emotionally neutral situations. And now? It was like being forced to stare into the sun.

Chase loved him. He still did, he said. He’d treated Percy the way his parents had taught him to treat people he loved.

He was sorry.

And unlike in New Orleans, it felt real this time, it felt genuine. Or maybe Percy was just deluding himself, maybe he was just seeing what he wanted to see. Maybe this was all an elaborate game, a way for Chase to get him to let his guard down so that way he could wail on Percy once more, but this time with shadows at his beck and call.

Chase was screaming into his knees, sobbing, begging for him to say something. Begging for Percy to hit him if he needed to, to do something, to do anything.

A few weeks ago, he might have. That was the secret of fight or flight - the fight was still just another way to hide from the feelings, to use anger to avoid dealing with the actual issue. It was more of the behavior that had driven him to drink, more of the behavior that threatened to hurt him and everyone he cared about.

I don’t worry about you. That would require thinking about you.

That had been a lie.

“I-I…” he swallowed, changing his mind on what to say as soon as he had started. “I don’t like talking about emotions in group settings. It’s too much. B-but… Danni, I’m hurt, but I’m not angry with you. You just wanted to help me.” He took another breath, his gaze at the disturbed snow on the ground. It was easier to talk to than any of the people. “Chase…”

A fresh wave of tears hit him, and he struggled through them, struggling until he managed to find his voice once more. “I-I-I c-can’t talk about this in f-front of everyone. It’s - you - I… W-we c-can talk in private.” It took what focus and concentration he had for his language to not slip, for him to remain in English and not flee to a thousand different ones.

He took another breath, before switching into French. Half the kids here would be able to understand. But more importantly, Chase - and if he had to guess, this new boy - would not.

“S’il est d’accord avec moi, je vais aller tout seul. Je ne le fais pas confiance. Si je ne texte pas en cinq minutes, c’est un truc, et je vais avoir besoin de vous.”

Everything was spiraling out of control - as it so often did.

Percy was crying, looking at Danni like a puppy rehabilitated from an abusive home, only to be kicked again by their new family. Dorian was understandably furious and protective, the new kid seemed hurt and confused, and Marlena and Millie were both clearly way out of their comfort zone. They still had Amelie cradled in their arms, as they watched a scene that was all too familiar. They had ended up crying and crashing out at almost every group gathering last semester, drowning underneath a tidal wave of emotions. They’d been in Percy’s place, losing control in front of a public audience, without even the dignity of a quiet, judgment free place. Out of the corner of their eye, they saw camera flashes - some of their fellow students had pulled out their phones, video taping the drama as it went down.

The story coming out wasn’t pretty, either. Danni had poured his heart out, explaining everything to Percy - to the tiny little freshman who seemed cursed to always have a terrible day at the carnival. But it didn’t stop with Danni. Chase spoke too, confessing all of it - explaining the greater context, just exactly who he was to Percy. April’s heart broke hearing the story. If something like that had happened between Danni, Dorian, and them - if they’d lost their brothers… They didn’t want to think about what they might have done to express that pain.

Not that any of these actions were justified. But it was the first step. Acknowledging how you had hurt other people, admitting where you were wrong. And either Chase or Percy deserved to be turned into a sideshow during this process. “Beanie, people were filming,” April said softly, not wanting to pull attention away from the boys as they worked through this, but they didn’t think Danni or Dori were equipped to do damage control right now. They did a quick glance of the layout, noting where the tent was staked into the ground for the hot cocoa stand, where other kids were standing, and once they had a good sense for the dimensions they needed, April pulled as much water from around them as they could. The entire tank for hot chocolate, at least twenty personalized water bottles, a good three inches of compacted snow on the ground - all of it came together, freezing rapidly as April constructed six walls around them. On three sides, it was an enclosed, rectangular space. But the fourth side was fractured and overlapping, allowing them to come and leave as they pleased, without anyone being able to see inside.

Making flash barriers with Danni over break in training sessions was already starting to pay off. Pops was going to be so proud!

“Okay, anyone who isn’t ready to go outside and see people, you can stay in here… probably. Idk if they’ll take this down. They might not love this. So maybe don’t linger too too long?? But let’s give the people who need a calm place some space. Everyone who doesn’t need to be here right now, there is ice skating, it will be very fun, so we’re going to go and do that.”

It was the least they could do. They owed Percy still for the Monster Mash - for getting them out of view when they were panicking, terrified of the vision they had in Nimue’s haunted house of a future where they’d become a cold, cruel, and heartless villain. If he and Chase wanted to talk somewhere private, this was an option - and if not here, at least no one would be able to continue to get images for their Greek Fire fan edits.

Danni talked first. Explaining things as he saw them happen. The sequence of events. It seemed simple from his perspective. Ben's ears got hot when Danni described him.

Danni thought he was cute.

”Sorry about that again,” he murmured as Danni said that he had blown him off. Ben hadn't wanted to. And he had promised 10 hang outs in exchange. He hoped that would be a good enough peace prize. “We started dating on the third,” Ben supplied. Not remembering that he hadn’t told Danni until the sixth.

He frowned as Danni said Chase had shoved Percy into lockers. He shot Chase a look, but Chase was sitting on the ground and he looked so broken. A slurry of memories went through Ben's mind.

Chase at the contest: “Personally I'm hoping short stack over there gets pummeled into the ground.”

Chase in the woods: “Emrys, he would say a dark wizard, he would think me a villain of darkness that cannot be brought to light.”

Chase on the side of the road breaking down as he told Ben everything that had happened to him. How he had gotten his powers.

Chase and him... praying.

Ben kissing him for the first time.

Ben asking Chase if this was serious or a fling.

Ben had been so afraid of being used.

Chase admitting he hadn't been sure he liked him until then, despite all the attention.

He shook a little. That could have been him. Shoved into a locker. Panic at the idea rose. Fear of that small of a space filling him.

Chase walking him through the panic that had risen in the shower.

Chase picking hotel rooms that had ADA compliant bathrooms after that.

Chase making sure he was okay.

Chase holding him. His gentleness. Making sure he had space around him in the car and in the shower, even if it was with his shadows when there wasn’t another option.

Chase growing, and saying to himself that his feelings mattered.

Chase fighting his demons and swimming.

Chase accepting help, and the drinks from Matt despite turning them down.

He could have been in Percy's place. Kissing the guy he liked. But Chase hadn't hurt him. He had helped him. Protected him. They had talked about the worst days of their lives. He had been so vulnerable with him and Chase hadn't hurt him. That told him what he needed to know. Chase did want to change, he wanted to be better. Ben adjusted himself so he stood between Chase and the others a bit more. If anyone did want to fight him they'd have to go through him.

The faces of the people arrayed there didn’t seem like the faces of people who were ready to attack. One of them even offered healing. The initial shock was over. Dorian’s face had become almost contrite, apologetic. Only Percy was still upset. Percy was miserable. Clinging to his boyfriend and barely able to get words out between sobs. Percy wanted to talk to Chase in private. He was crying and they needed closure. Ben offered his hand to Chase, to help pick him up.

“We'll talk later, I'll hold my opinions until you've told me everything,” Ben said, echoing their conversation on the side of the road when Chase told him about how he got his powers. But he had a soft smile on his face. Chase took his hand, and it was a good thing, it would be the only thing that kept Ben from using the people in the room to get up and over the walls.

Ice walls formed around them. April said something that was lost on him. He looked around, gripping onto Chase like a lifeline. He couldn’t breathe. There was an exit, but it was beyond the crowd of people. He tried to get through them. He couldn’t breathe. Walls. He felt like passing out. Fuck. There were too many people. Ben wanted out of there. He needed to not be in this small space with all these strangers. He didn’t know any of them. Only Danni and Chase. He turned, considering the walls, if he could scale them, he did parkour and he could get out that way. But the walls were made of ice, he couldn’t get his fingers from his free hand into them.

Ben couldn’t breathe. The world felt smaller and smaller, and he couldn’t get any air. Black dots started to fill his vision.

“Victoria!” Andy shouted. She didn’t know what Vicky had planned, but it couldn’t be good. There was no way it was worth killing the other team over. She caught what Gideon did out of the side of her eye and she smiled a little, shaking her head.

“Hey! Don’t be rude!” Andy yells at the other team. ”You don’t hear us calling you rude names. Stick to the snowballs.”

She noticed off to one side, where she was certain she had heard April earlier, that a wall of ice had formed. If that was April’s doing she had gotten good. Too bad she wasn’t helping with the snow ball fight. Andy ducked behind a fortification and sent April a text.

Then she picked up more snow and went back to throwing balls at the other team. She laughed. This was fun.

Leah didn’t need to be neurotypical to understand that things were complicated between Percy and Chase. On one hand, she felt a little bad about being snarky towards him back in New Orleans. On the other hand… She didn’t know him. Any progress he may or may not have made was on him to prove, and it wasn’t Leah he had to prove that to. She liked Percy, respected him and considered him a friend. That meant that if, by some miracle, Percy was cool with him, then he was cool with her. Though, she made a mental note to kick him for a field goal if he made Percy regret giving any amount of slack. She elected not to say that out loud.

So when the walls went up around them, Leah stepped around to the scuffed one and looked over her shoulder at the test of Excelsior.

”I’ll wait outside,” She said, ducking her head low and squeezing out from between the overlapping walls. Then she posted up and planted Sjafnamarr blade-down in the snow, leaning on the hilt. She sighed and shut her eyes.

Sometimes, the best move was to abstain.

So the snow was real. Huh. Neat.

Marlena looked at the ground when Chase and Percy both started bawling. She barely knew one of them, and the other was a complete stranger to her. This was not the sort of thing she needed to be witness to right now, certainly not when this day was supposed to put her nerves to rest. The walls April put up were a smooth move to give the boys some privacy, and she was going to take the out.

”Yeah, this isn’t my business. I’m bouncing.” She turned over to April with the barest trace of a frown, running a hand through her hair. ”I’ll be around.”

And then she slipped out after Tall, Dark and Nordic, looking around. Sure enough, there were cameras and flashes. Even at their own school, they could’t get a lick of privacy, could they? The frown became a bit more overt. One hell of a carnival this was.

Marlena turned on her heel and darted off in an uncertain direction, hands stuffed into her pockets and fidgeting. Dread was bubbling up in her stomach again, she imagined it’d be like this more often, with people exploding on each other and everyone stopping by to post about it on SuperLink. Fuck, she didn’t want to deal with all that, and she probably didn’t have a choice.

There was a snowball fight happening, but it looked like people were using powers and another fucking gigantic sword. Nah, she wasn’t up for that right now. She didn’t want to get clobbered and ruin her fit.

So she kept walking.

Don’t catastrophize, Marlena thought. It won’t help, and it’ll be harder to stop the more you do.

It’s not even noon yet. You’ll be okay.

Stuff to do… Stuff to do… There were club signups. Maybe that’d be fun? She swung by the tables, where parents were yammering at teachers and other clerical work was being done.

Danni Kingston

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Carnival
Magic Items: Kingston-Grey Bracelet
First Day Fit: Black Jacket, shirt, skirt, and knee high black combat boots

Danni could feel his chest constructing, his breaths coming shorter and shorter as Percy sat there curled up in Dorian's arms. He'd spilled his guts out, with Chase coming right behind him, said everything he could think of about the situation and he felt himself shaking like a leaf. Percy acted like he'd betrayed him and if Percy was hurt, did that mean they weren't friends? Did it mean he'd give back his gifts? Did it mean he'd go back to being Dorian's boyfriend only, instead of Danni's friends? Danni had lost relationships; it'd been scary and upsetting sure, but he'd moved on pretty quickly, but friendship break ups? Danni couldn't stop a sob from breaking out just at the thought of any of his friends leaving him. Danni didn't know what hurt meant or how to move past that; any time he'd had an issue, they'd fixed it immediately and Danni didn't know when they could fix it. He didn't like not being able to fix it.

He'd thought them meeting would fix it.

Milli-illi-illi-pede was brilliant and smart and so right. They definitely needed a whole chill out session, lots of cuddles piles with all of Excelsior and then some with just the sibs and then some with the whole family, Danni to beg Spicy not to hate him sessions, maybe a very, very, very long spa session, a whole three hour massage, and then maybe they could come back together. Danni just didn't see any other way that anyone could vibe out after this level of stress. This was world ending stuff, like supervillian level of stress, and Danni needed a whole week to unwind now.

“Wait, Spi-” The words died in Danni's throat, waiting to ask if they were okay, ask what hurt meant, ask when they could fix it, but the walls. Towering, icy things that crushed everyone together almost shoulder to shoulders with no room to breath, not room to stretch, no room to dance and Danni felt himself freeze for a moment. He was surrounded by people, not glass. He was surrounded by the carnival, not a game. He wouldn't wake up in that glass again, he wouldn't catch fire, he wouldn't burn everyone alive, he wouldn't burn everyone alive, he wouldn't…

The walls. Although his mind was drowning, his body wasn't. Nemo had put them face to face with situations that made them freeze up, that nearly killed them, that should have broken them but instead got him moving even when he was terrified because there was someone in worse condition that him. Ben, panicking, was suffering more. He knew it'd be just a bit up before he was free, that he would rocket into the endless expanse and breath again but Ben was trapped, so small and tiny and reeling with everything happening here. He was moving before he realized it and he saw Chase turn to his boyfriend but if he didn't solve this with Perxy, Danni couldn't fix things with Percy.

“I got ‘im. Work it out wit’ Spicy!” Danni choked out to Chase and he was next to Ben, snatching him up and launching them both into the sky, single minded going as high as he could until he stopped with the whole carnival spread out beneath them.

Hearing Percy call his name, hearing the tears in his voice as he said it. It killed Chase. The snow crunched beneath him as he pulled himself in even tighter. He hadn't expected the offer of privacy, hadn't expected any offer if he was honest. A shadow began to cover over him, and as Chase looked back up he saw Ben, his sweet little bug standing between everyone and himself. After everything, after all that was said and done…he was still there, offering a hand to lift Chase back up, and he took it. His eyes stayed looking down, he couldn't meet anyone's eyes, not now, especially not Ben's. His right arm ran across his face, only then fully noticing how over half the sleeve had burned away as his tears wiped across his bare arm. ”As you wish.” Was all Chase could manage to croak out in response to his boyfriend before walls of ice began encasing them. Chase moved to take Ben, to remove his boyfriend from danger as well as Danni. They were claustrophobic, and while he didn't expect Excelsior to know that of Ben, they should have for Danni.

Before he could do anything, Danni took charge and told him he'd help Ben, he'd take him out. Chase nodded, trusting Danni in this instance, but if he managed to fail, if he hurt Ben in any way, it would be hard to get that back. Chase looked towards Percy and held a hand out. ”Take the lead.”

Percy stared at him for a moment, before shaking his head. He was willing to talk with Chase. He wasn’t willing to be touched by him. He meant what he’d said at the dance. He never wanted to be touched by him again. “Nous pouvons nous retrouver au toit.” He realized a second too late that had come out in French, so he tried again. “mir kenen zikh trefn aoyfn dakh.” Yiddish. His hands were still shaking, as he handed the presents Danni had given him to Dorian to take. “The roof,” he choked out, as he tried to make the jump - blue energy crackling around his body, but none of it concentrating, as a hundred different destinations came to mind - his childhood bedroom, their old school, their favorite park, and many more. There were too many places his mind was trying to go, so instead of moving, he remained rooted in place.

Chase's hand curled back slowly before he shoved them into his pockets. Fine. He deserved it. He was a monster after all. A villain as Danni had put it. He watched as Percy tried and failed to take himself to the roof, it would've left Chase behind. Chase simply sniffled before letting out a sigh as all of Excelsior's shadows began to merge around the two and like smoke in the wind they faded away. It was a bit of an unstable landing, having had a hard time finding a shadow atop the roof to move into. But finally the two came out and Chase took in a deep breath, rolling onto the floor from his shaky legs as he stared up at the sky.

Percy flinched as he felt something cold and alien wrap around him, as his surroundings were plunged into darkness. And for a brief moment, he was back there. Back in the Framework, shunted from game to game and at Arcade’s mercy, separated from Dorian - unaware of whether his boyfriend was dead or alive…

Others had been there with him, too. But none of them had been his friends. None of them had cared for him. He would have died alone, surrounded by people.

And just like Arcade’s manipulations, the dark gave way to light, and Percy practically flung himself out of the shadows, scrambling to increase the distance between himself and Chase. His heart was beating erratically, as his mind conjured up a thousand different ways Chase could hurt him - that he could even try to kill him. He wasn’t limited to throwing him into lockers anymore, he could wrap his throat in shadows and solidify them, choke him to death before he could even react. He could punch him until every bone in his body broke, and toss him through a pool of darkness to never be seen again. He could…

He was doing his best not to hyperventilate.

Somehow he managed.

He got up to his feet, a good ten feet away from the other boy.

And for a minute, Percy just stared.

He could understand any language (except Wampa), but words failed him. They failed him too often. He didn’t even know where to start. There was so much Chase had said, so much Percy was still processing - so much he knew he needed to say, but he didn’t know how.

Dorian was going to never let him hear the end of this if he ever found out.

He settled on something nonverbal at first.

He reached into his jeans pocket, fished out his sobriety chip - and he tossed it to Chase.

Chase felt the cold plastic hit his face before bouncing off and settling onto the ground next to him. Turning to look at it. OK? So no talking yet. Cool. Chase was beginning to calm down a bit, to pull himself together, and the more he did the more he worried about Ben. He sat up, picking up the chip and inspecting it before placing it on his thumb and flicking it up into the air, waiting for it to fall so he could catch it. ”You play poker now?”

Percy shook his head again, a bit of irritation flickering through him. Why did he always fall in love with the most annoying people? The token was relatively simple, with the words one day at a time and 1 month recovery. “After you beat me… that’s what I did. What I kept on doing.” His voice was small, each word sounding forced - as a thousand different languages tried to bubble to the surface.

Chase caught the coin and examined it again. He'd only ever seen them in shows or movies. It was a sobriety chip. His hand gripped tight against it, the words and symbols on the chip imprinting into the palm of his hand. ”Fuck” It made sense, to drink away the pain. He definitely couldn't look at Percy now. ”I didn't – I should've – Fuck.”

“I didn’t understand why you did it,” he continued, looking not at Chase but at the festival down below. It was easier to talk to the wind, easier to force the words to stay in English. Easier to pretend this was some theoretical exercise, some journal entry a doctor was asking him to complete. “I thought you were brave and charming, as honorable as the knights you adored. So if…” his voice cracked, tears threatening to spill once more, “if you decided I was so disgusting that I needed to be beaten, then it must have been true. I must be some… some wicked, vile monster. Something unlovable that doesn’t even deserve a friend. And I… I couldn’t sit with it. Couldn’t handle that feeling. I don’t remember how much I drank that first time. I remember my mothers finding me, and asking what had happened, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell them that Or- that you hated me and I had only myself to blame, that my only friend in the world had decided I was a dragon that needed to be slain.”

”No, Percival – you were never the monster. I was. I thought – when you left me alone to that program, I panicked. I thought – I'd lost you, I thought I'd taken too long to respond and my fear of what that response would have happen…it was like a self fulfilling prophecy. The more I feared losing you, the more I lost you. I couldn't bear it, it all bubbled inside me, and I just saw – it was like I'd blacked out. All I knew…all I could think of – and I don't know why. I knew what it was like to be in your position yet I still did it.” Chase stared at Percy's back, then past him. ”I never wanted to hurt you, to cause you to drink…I don't know why I did…why i thought – well I wasn’t thinking.”

“I didn’t leave the program,” he snapped. He hadn’t meant to put venom behind his words. But it slipped out anyway. “They dismissed me. I don’t - I don’t know why. I was going to tell you when you… when you….” he swallowed thickly, as his mind forced him back to that day - to the genuine joy he’d felt as he saw Chase coming his way down the empty hallway, unaware that it was the last time he’d be happy to see his best friend in his life.

He sank down to the ground, and wrapped his arms around his knees, pulling them into his chest. “I can’t - I can’t even let people touch me anymore without feeling like I’m being set on fire. I’m not - I’m not the Percival you used to know. I’m aggressive and distrustful, you were at the contest, you saw the way I acted towards Wiccan. I tried to kill a teacher during my first week of school with an axe. I don’t see the best in people, I only see the worst. I’m judgmental and abrasive. I drank - I drink instead of letting others help me. I lie. When I told you the person you knew was gone, I meant it.”

Chase's stomach churned. He hated this. Seeing the consequences was far worse than anything he could imagine. After everything that had happened, after everything he'd done to start a new life, he didn't think the past would catch up to him like this. He was quiet, listening to Percy as he spoke. Swallowing hard as he shut his eyes tight. ”Please don't say that. I know he has to be somewhere inside. I – I saw the way you laughed, you danced, back at the party. Percival isnt dead, but I did bury him and I – I cannot stress how much I'm sorry for doing that” Tears began to well up again as the words became harder to speak.

”I'm glad you got out of that program. Knowing now what I know…it would've broken me more had you stayed.” Chase sniffled, wiping it off on his sleeve. His eyes with a distant far off look as he thought back to the things that happened within GATES.

Percy was silent for a moment, as he pulled out his phone and shot off a quick text in the Excelsior group chat - not his normal prose, no salutation or sign off, just a short I am okay. He then slid the phone back away, as a thousand thoughts were rattling in his head. It would have been easy to agree with Chase here - to tell him that he had been the one responsible for everything that he’d become, that Chase was Frankenstein, faced with regret as he beheld his own monster.

But Chase hadn’t forced him to drink. He hadn’t forced him to rage and scream at the first people he met when he came to Avengers Academy. He hadn’t forced him to only see the worst in others and rarely ever the good.

There were some behaviors he had learned from this trauma. And there were some he had chosen himself.

“You didn’t bury Percival. I did.”

He averted his gaze down to the ground, counting each breath that he took, every inhale and every exhale.

“What happened to Orion?” he then asked quietly. “After the school year ended.”

There was a hitch in Chase's breath. Hearing an old name he long thought abandoned. His voice was low, gravely, as he spoke. Picking up bits of pebbles from the ground and stacking them. ”He uh…he went on to have lapses in memory. The program said it was normal, intended. It wasn't long after his knight vanished that Orions star was snuffed out in its entirety. Betrayed by his kin, taken away to an institution and ran through several experiments just to see what they could find. That was how he gained his gifts, the inability to sleep and the power to control darkness. Forced to spend his ever waking days in torment. He learned recently there are more physical scars associated with this too, ones he'd never have been able to see…”

There was silence, the sound of stone in stone as he placed another pebble atop another. ”If you truly buried Percival, then…maybe we can find that shovel together and help dig him out. I've heard the grave bells from beneath, I know he lives. Now he just needs to shine.”

Percy looked away from the ground, and looked at Chase for the first time in this conversation - really looked at him. The pallid tone of his skin, the dark circles under his eyes, all the health and vibrancy sapped out of him, leaving behind just a revenant, a ghost possessing its own corpse. He knew there was no love between Chase and his family. There was a reason he had spent almost every hour he could over at Percy’s place, a reason why Chase had always been invited to go on his family’s vacations - they were never extravagant, money a little tighter with a bonus son around, but his mothers had never complained.

But his blood boiled at the thought of what Chase’s parents had allowed to be done to him. Experimentation in the pursuit of powers was deadly. Percy’s own mother had nearly died as a result of SHIELD science experiments, she had been a volunteer, and he still saw the way she shook when around doctors, the way she pushed off medical appointments until it was absolutely necessary.

“How did Orion escape?”

He didn’t know if he trusted Chase. He didn’t know if he could ever trust him again. Words were one thing - actions another. He looked down at the ground again. What was he willing to trust Chase with? How could he allow him to help? What shovel could he give him that he wouldn’t be afraid would be used to bury him even deeper?

“… We can start with letters. You can write to me, and I will write back. I never blocked your number. They can be sent as texts or you can use physical paper. You cannot ever touch me. I will tell you when we can try what Danni does, using a barrier.”

“And… you can meet my boyfriend. We can have dinner. You can bring yours.”

Chase closed his hands tight. His nails digging into the palms of his hands as his legs bounced. He could feel a trickle of blood from the pressure. ”His gifts came in…it was an explosive awakening and by the end of it all…every scientist responsible no longer lived. The gifts consumed him, it allowed for him to leave, to escape, but it also drenched him in blood he could never wash away.”

His grip lessened slightly, the red stain falling onto a stone. ”Letters. I know you prefer them and you deserve something physical. Something tangible. You deserve someone who puts thought and time into it more so than a text ever could. I'll…try not to touch you. It'll be hard, but please if I do know it's reflexive ok? I don't…want to fuck this up again.” Chase didn't bother addressing the idea of a double date.

“Good.” Not to the gifts consuming Chase, not to him being drenched in blood, but for him having gotten his vengeance. Percy was still coming around to the idea of second chances. It was easier to stomach them for children. But for scientists, experimenting on people against their will? Too many of Percy’s ancestors had suffered that fate. Never again. There would be no more. If Chase had not already ended the threat, Percy would have offered to help. Prison and justice, they weren’t enough. It was better to make sure. “Even Odysseus drenched himself in blood, when he killed the suitors. All the best heroes have darkness in them.”

He nodded a bit at Chase’s request. “I can’t promise I’ll remember that when it happens - but once I’ve calmed down, I will try to. It’s…” he frowned, “it’s why I had a breakdown after you hugged me. Why I threw all of the food and dishes at you.”

”Here I thought your boyfriend really hated me. Isn't your thing teleporting?” Chase paused. ”There's more blood beyond that…I didn't stop at the scientists. I don't think I could've stopped. It was like a wave that carried me, moved me, it felt almost like a dream, though that may have been the sedatives.” Another beat of silence as he tried to find the words. ”I'm adopted now…I – my last fam…I can’t even call them that, not with everything they did. You and your mothers were more family to me than my own blood, and in that rage…in that darkenss…I orphaned myself. I found myself at home, and with my parents slaughtered, and I was at the center of it all…”

Percy was still.

He’d already had his suspicions of what Chase was capable of. And here they were, confirmed. It was easy to justify killing faceless individuals - easy to dismiss it.

But it did not frighten him hearing that Chase had killed his parents, even as Percy could hold their faces in his mind’s eye.

“Death to abusers,” he finally said. “Have you killed since?”

It didn’t feel like the appropriate time to explain the entanglement, but Chase had asked - and had evidently learned enough to know Percy’s innate powers. “My boyfriend and I… we had sex and became entangled on a quantum level. A small amount of me right now is actually him - and a small amount of him is me. I haven’t noticed any differences beyond being able to borrow his powers but… I suppose on a very real level, I can never be the boy you knew again. I’m not all Percy anymore.”

”No I haven–” Chase’s thoughts cut off as what Percy had explained to him clicked. ”Oh fuck. Do I need to worry about that? Is a condom enough? Ooooo fuck fuck fuck!” He panicked, wondering if he'd accidentally done something to Ben.

Percy’s face turned bright red. He didn’t need to know that Chase was fucking people - especially not after Danni had pointed out how similar Percy was to Chase’s boyfriend. It wasn’t a jealousy issue, his crush on Chase had ended a long time ago - around the second or third beating. Hypocritically, he just didn’t need to have that information. “Erm, no, it’s… It’s a unique thing that happens when someone with astral powers that veer into possession and someone who warps space-time both um… er… uncontrollably surge at the same time. Repeatedly. He was partially in me - as in powers wise, not… and uh… I kept jumping us… so our atoms got… got a little mixed up…”

Chase laughed. He hadn't expected to, and it burst out so suddenly he was barely able to slap his mouth shut with his hands. ”Sorry sorry. Man I did not realize you had that dog in you! That's some kinky shit. But glad to know that this isn't something I'll need to worry about.”

Percy bit his lip, debating for a moment. Chase had been the first person he wanted to tell when he had gotten together with Dorian. “I…erm…he has this book…and…”

He tugged on the collar of his hoodie and shirt, moving them so that way Chase could his upper chest - a strategically chosen location to avoid being seen by Percy’s moms - that was covered in hickeys, all in various stages of healing.

Chase whistled. ”Damn, you should see Benny Boi. You'd think hes a leopard with how many spots I gave him. So uh, what's this book?” Chase scooted a little closer but still kept his distance. ”Not that I think Benny or I are really ready for that sort of thing. Its all kinda…new. To both of us.”

Percy scooted a little further away to restore the distance between them. “The mutant kama sutra,” he mumbled. “The uh, the warnings come after the spell.”

Chase's smile sank as he watched Percy move away again. ”Oh uh, before we go…here. I got you a birthday present. Thought you may like it.” He pulled out a card from his backpack, a sexy alternative art card of G'raha Tia from Magic, in a clear sleeve and nestled into a top loader, it is signed by Johnathan Bailey. ”Signatures authentic.”

“You… got me a birthday present?” he asked, stunned. “Why?”

”Never know what the future has in store anymore so…figured I may as well incase you know…you actually gave me a chance again.”

“…Raha is still my favorite…” he offered quietly. “There’s a costume dance in the fall. Maybe you… want to be Emet-Selch? The group did She-Ra last year and I… I didn’t do it, because I was afraid I’d be… I’d be picked on if I did. But maybe next year… we could do Final Fantasy. Dorian could be the Warrior of Light.”

”I'd make a damn good Emet.” Chase chuckled. ”Maybe Mountain Girl could be Wuk Lamat, Sabine could be Minfilia, I'm sure the rest can fit others too.” Chase fiddled with a rock, halfway making eye contact with Percy. It all felt so…fresh…awkward…like trying to make a new friend.

Percy kept on dodging making eye contact with Chase - not necessarily because it was him, but because it was eye contact. He hated it. It felt too intense, too vulnerable - too much like being put under a spotlight. “Emet became good in the end,” he reminded him. “Even after doing horrible things… it suits you.”

He was quiet for another moment. “I think I’ve said all I had to say. I imagine you want to go back to your boyfriend. He seemed upset.”

”Dude, this suuuuucks. This would be a great time for a hug. Could we settle for a fist bump maybe? No?” Chase looked off towards the Festival again. ”I don't know what that guy was thinking making ice walls. Danni's claustrophobic and so is Benny Boi. I gotta make sure they're ok.”

Percy shook his head. Maybe one day he would be ready for physical touch from Chase. But not today.

“April? I don’t know. She might be having another episode.” She’d come back from break looking like a completely different person, and he knew from Dorian that their parents had grounded her the entire time. It surprised him though to learn that Danni was claustrophobic. It was strange for his sister to have done that, then. Ben he figured there was little chance she’d known.

Chase sighed. ”Need help down or you got it?” A shadow crept up, opening like a doorway as the edges undulated.

“No, thank you. It’s a bit too familiar to how someone tried to kill me last semester.”

”What the fuck man. We're gonna talk about that later.” And without allowing Percy to protest, Chase stepped into the shadows and vanished.

Ben had enough of a presence of mind to let go of Chase when Danni grabbed him. He transferred his clinging to Danni. He still couldn’t breathe. Danni picked him up and he closed his eyes accepting that Danni had him. He trusted Danni. He gasped for air and buried himself into Danni’s embrace. Tears poured out of his clamped shut eyes. There was a rushing in his ears that could have been his blood pounding or air.

Danni took in heavy gulps, tension bleeding out as he focused on keeping them aloft. He still trembled with the residual emotions from down below, but being somewhere he could see everything and everyone and get away from it all helped. His heart broke for the boy in his arms and wished he could do more than just hold him, but a drop from this height would be infinitely worse than a few tears Danni couldn't wipe away. “Just let it all out, Bennie boi. I gotchu up ‘ere. Just you and me and t'e open sky. No nasty walls, no little boxes, no nestin’ dolls. You're gunna be alright.”

Ben shuddered in relief, but the panic that had washed over him still held him. Ben didn’t remember being a kid trapped in an elevator, but he did remember the cocoon. He remembered screaming for his parents, who should have been inches away. His mother had been right there. He didn’t know how long he was there. Even now. It had been unclear. His voice had gone so raw he couldn’t speak for almost a week after. His uncle was already in London when he had been released. The debris had been cleared. His parents' bodies were removed, processed and waiting to be placed on the mantel.

Ben shook. He sobbed. He couldn’t breathe.

But he knew Danni had him. Ben couldn’t quite process it, but it felt like Danni was holding him bridal style. The tension in his body slowly started to dissipate. He needed to move. Danni told him they were out of the little ice wall space. He drew his first full breath and opened his eyes.

Danni gave Ben as much time as he needed, hovering in the air and offering quiet reassurances as Ben cried out his terror. Danni rocked back and forth gently and as Ben wound down, Danni offered Ben a watery smile as he opened his eyes. “‘eeeeey, t'ere. Figured we bot’ need a little ‘ang time. Get it, ‘cause we're ‘angin’ out in the sky? So we're just ‘an'in’.” Danni giggled at his lame joke. “So uh, t'at was real intense. You gunna be okay? You're not like physically ‘urt right? I didn't see anyt'in’ ‘it ya or anyt'in’. Ya don't need t'e nurse, yeah? Nod six times for yes and twelve for no. Nah, jk don't do t'at. If ya ‘ave a ‘ead injury t'en that'll make it worse!” Danni plopped his head on Ben's, neck awkwardly twisted but Danni wanted to be able to give Ben a little more contact (and get a little comfort for himself, he wasn't a saint).

Ben blinked, looked around and saw how high they were up off the ground. He was suddenly very glad he wasn’t also afraid of heights. “Bloody hell!” Ben gasped, holding onto Danni a little tighter.

“Uh, yeah I’m fine. Physically. I mean. I fuck. I am so sorry. I lost it there. Sorry,” Ben stammered out. “Are you okay? You don’t like small spaces either. We can land if you need to. Thank you. I couldn’t have stayed there. There were too many people, and the exit was impossible to get to, and the walls were steep and solid. I couldn’t get out. I...” Ben gasped for some air as he sensed he was about to spiral again. Tremors spasmed in his hands.

Danni laughed, throwing his head back and let the sound carry. “Ben, ‘eeeey, stay wit’ me, my guy. Focus on now. There's no walls, no people - just you and me and endless space. We're gunna stay up ‘ere til you're comfy gettin’ ack down, aight? I can do t'is all day. Danni giggled, doing a purposely terrible impression of Eli in the Contest. “Aren'tcha just a t'oughtful little bug. I’m All good, all good. Rillie left it wit'out a ceilin’ so I ‘ad an easy escape route, ya know? Poissan-Pas drilled us in t'is stuff ‘fore he… Over and over and over. Escape drills, survival drills, any situation ‘e t'ought we might freeze in and t'at's probs pretty luck ‘cause ot'erwise, we'd bot’ be not ‘ere! But we're ‘ere and t'at was a whoooooole mess.” Danni laughed again until it turned into a sob.

“And it was all my fault - I didn't really t'ink when I told everyone where I was! I ‘ad a whole plan ta introduce t'em toget'er and it woulda been cute and t'em wholesome and t'in's woulda been better. I just wanted ta ‘angout iwt’ everyone; I was just so excited ta be back toget'er t'at I didn't even t'ink and now Spicy's upsetti, Dee's upsetti, Chase is upsetti, you're upsetti - talk ‘bout splash damage. Who needs fire whenever ya got emotional blunders for 600, Bob? Danni squeezed Ben a little closer ta him. “I'm sorry I messed all t'is up. Just wanted t'em ta make up ‘cause Spicy clearly needed ta move on from t'at and Chasey clearly wanted ‘ia friend back and I love friends!”

Ben shook and pulled himself into a smaller ball in Danni’s arms. After a couple of moments he was able to relax again. “Bloody hell. I’ve never had it this bad before.” But that wasn’t true, not really, Ben’s time in the Terrigensis cocoon was a blur of panic. There had been no escape then, not until he was safe at his grandparents house. He squeezed his eyes shut tight, trying to catch his breath. He focused on what Danni had said, trying to parse through it all. Using him as an anchor.

“You couldn’t have known it would happen like that,” he finally managed to say. His voice still shaky. “I promised you I’d hang out with you today, long before I was with Chase. Why didn’t you guys warn me? I should have known. I mean he mentioned that your friends wouldn’t like him. I should have asked why. But I didn’t realize it would be like that. I didn’t know. I knew he had a past with someone, but I didn’t know it was my damn roommate. Fuck this year is going to be a mess.” Ben sighed.

”Thank you for wanting to fix it. He needs him.” It stung to say that. Ben didn’t know everything that happened between Percy and Chase. But he had seen how much pain was surrounding those memories. ”He missed him. I don’t think I’m totally excited about realizing how much I probably remind him of Percy. I feel like a replacement.” Ben’s heart ached. Would Chase make up with Percy and leave him? Could Ben keep himself from blaming Danni?

“Idk, ‘e told me not ta tell ya and like, it’s not really my place ta tell ya? I can show ya t’en texts if ya want, side messaged ‘im durin’ your trip. ‘E was up reaaaaal late one night; I ‘ad ta like, set an alarm to wake up and every’in’. Kinda grilled ‘im and asked ‘im what t’e difference tween y’all was, tbh. ‘Cause I see you, t’is absolutely adorable guy and a little secluded and not big on lots o’ attention, and t’en ya see Spicy and it’s kinda like mhm mhm mhm ya know? Danni sighed. “‘ey, ‘ey, you aren’t a replacement. Sauna boi is def inta you and tbh, Dee would wipe t’e floor wit’ ‘is butt if ‘e even so much as looked at Spicy wit’ too much of anyt’in’ ot’er t’an grovellin’. Like, I t’ink t’at boi is low key whipped for you so I wouldn’t worry ‘bout t’at anyway. ‘e just wants ‘is friend back and ta make amends for bullyin’ ‘im. And if ‘e does leave ya, just come runnin’ ta me and I’ll set aaaaaaall ‘is skateboards on fire!”

Ben felt himself get warm in the face again as Danni called him adorable. But that was just Danni. He was friendly like that. That was okay. He could deal with that. Hopefully. Especially since it felt hypocritical to be upset about Percy if he thought about Danni.

“Thank you, yeah, you’re right.” Ben smiled thinking about Chase. He almost said that Chase never slept, but knew that wasn’t something Chase necessarily wanted to spread around.

“I don’t think it is worth burning all his skateboards if we did break up. We haven’t even been dating all that long. It’d suck, big time, but not burn his skateboards suck. Well, maybe one of them.” Ben didn’t know what he would do if Chase and him did break up though. He had been happy for the first time in ages with Chase. A fog had been lifted from around him. He still grieved. Still missed his parents. God did he miss them. But at least now it felt like there was a future. There was something worth living for. If they broke up... Especially if it was for Chase to leave him for Percy... for Emrys. He’d rather be in the damn cocoon again, at least then his suffering would be for a reason.

Ben sighed and shifted, he knew they were high up, but he hadn’t really had a chance to look around. He took a moment to do that now. “Damn you can just fly huh. I can talk to bugs, I can’t get myself out of a room with an exit. It was probably a good thing I didn’t call a bunch of bugs over though. No one likes to be swarmed. This is a good view, but we can land now. I don’t know, show me that tree you were talking about.”

“Yee! I love flyin’. Its so freein’, tbh.” Danni lowered them slowly, spying Chase slipping out from the shadows down on the ground. That meant it was time to handle his own issue. “I gotta go check on Spicy and t'en we can all go check out t'e tree! Its suuuper spooky but, uh, I gotta go get yelled at and Sauna boi probs needs a little live right now too.” Danni lowered them down next to Chase, gently put Ben on the ground, ruffled his hair, and beamed at Chase. “Took good care o’ ‘im like I said I would! ‘ave fun! We're checkin’ out t'e tree after t'iiiiiiis!” Danni blasted back into the air, heading for Percy.

Ben stood, his legs unsteady, but he stayed upright. “Thank you, Danni. See you in a bit,” he told Danni before he took off. Ben looked at Chase, his heart pounding, not from the same fear as earlier. He flexed, and shifted, not sure what to say. Not sure how to start this conversation. His face was still wet with the tears he had shed.

Sabine had wanted to allow Chase and Percy to have a moment amongst themselves to sort out what was going on. She knew from experience that it would take more than a conversation, but she at least wanted to give them the space and time to do so.

What she hadn’t thought of was everyone else around them. People loved a show and, unfortunately, they still lived in a time when high emotional occurrences were social media gold. Karen freaking out in a grocery store, some racist dirtbag spewing hate and being chewed out, anything that got likes and clicks and views.

So when Danni combusted, Chase caught on fire, and Percy started freaking out, it was prime time viewership.

April was correct to bring it to her attention. If she didn’t step up, people were about to post Percy at his most vulnerable. And she knew what that kind of attention could do to a person. So she needed to act fast. She could memory wipe the lot of them, but that voice in her head (that sounded a lot like Max) told her that was not how to handle things. Thankfully, April had worked her powers to put up walls (literally) around them. It would stop it for now, but she needed to get out in front of it.

And then she had an idea. She knew one of the rumors going around was about her, Leah, and Andy and whatever relationship dynamics were going on. Sabine knew the only way to combat drama was more drama. And it had to be drama people were already willing to lap up.

Sabine made her way over to Leah. ”Hey, I’ll explain later, but right now I need your help. We need to get into a fight. I’m talking full-on screaming and swearing and whatever. Feel free to slap me or whatever, but we need to do it now. This isn’t real, but we need to make everyone watching us believe it is. Trust me?”

Leah gave her the biggest What the fuck face. ”Is it that bad in there?”

Sabine nodded, but not fully agreeing. ”It’s bad, but that can be fixed. What can’t is people recording them at their lowest moment and post it for the world to see. Danni is used to it, but I don’t think he’s up for doing damage control. Chase and Percy definitely aren’t. So, we need them to focus on something more dramatic. Something they are speculating about. And that’s us.”

Well. Shit. ”…Okay, but I’m not hitting you, you’ll rupture an organ or something.”

Leah thought about it for a second. Fuck it. She inhaled, and then put on her best resting bitch face. And then she shouted loud enough that the ground under her feet twitched.

”What in the FUCK do you mean they think I’m dating Andy?!”

Sabine fought a smile seeing Leah take to the role immediately. ”Oh, I don’t know, how about you spending so much time with her without me around! How about going off on your own during our shopping trip. I assumed you were buying gifts, but people saw you, Leah. With her. Did it ever occur to you I may not be ready to add someone else into our relationship?!?” Sabine made sure she was loud enough for people to hear. They needed to grab attention.

”First of all, no they damn well didn’t see me with her! Second, what makes you think I’m about to either! Fuck, I was buying shit for EVERYONE, Sabine! You think I’m fucking keeping secrets?! From you?!”

”I don’t know what to think anymore Leah! You changed! Ever since we won the contest you act different, you spend time with other people, what am I supposed to think? The money went to your thick fucking head!”

”Oh, sure, trust the fucking rich girl to be the judge of that! Hey, how’re the fucking Hex Girls, huh?!” Her voice was getting louder and louder. ”Because I know you were getting friendly with them, after the shit they pulled!”

”Yeah, I am a rich girl, I don’t pretend to be something I’m not! And at least the Hex Girls listened to my concerns instead of dismissing them! If you want to hook up with someone else, fine, but maybe not the person who broke America Chavez’s fucking leg! That’s fucked up!”

color=ffcb00]”I FUCKING DON’T!” Fuck, that came out a bit sharper than she intended. ”You can read my mind any time you want, you know you don’t even have to ask! But no, you make shit up anyway! It’s just not enough for, nothing fucking is!”

”Does it ever get through that rock-hard head of yours that I am trying to be better? That I don’t want to have to read your thoughts to know what you are thinking when it should be obvious! I’m done with it!”

”So you just don’t trust me, is that it?” She asked. ”Because I’ve never doubted you’re better than you were, did you know that?! But I’m the fucking problem here, blame it all on the damn rock head! Sure! Why not! Everyone else does!”

”Maybe, maybe not, but it’s not like you do anything to assuage people’s assumptions. Instead you get upset and run off. Newsflash Leah, the problems are still there even if you are miles away from them!” Sabine played up taking a beat. ”So, there’s the road Leah. Fuck off. It’s what you do best!”

There was a pause where Leah just stared down at her. And she was trying her best not to let a silly grin pop up on her face. Thankfully, the cameras were unlikely to even see it.
”...Why the fuck do I want to kiss you after that?” She finally said, quietly.

Sabine also fought hard to not grin. Damn, they were good. ”Because we have fucked up family relationships and don’t know how to process them other than engaging in terrible cohabitation. Screw it.” Sabine launched herself at Leah, essentially pulling her to the ground and kissing her hard. At least the cameras got their show.

Leah’s sword fell down, and Leah nearly fell on top of Sabine. The kiss lasted several moments, the giant wrapping arms around the sexy blonde girl she loved to be bitchy with.

”You know…” Leah finally came up for air. ”That’s pretty accurate, actually. When those two aren’t about to kill each other in there, we’ll pick this up. Right now, get your head out of the gutter, rich girl.”

Sabine playfully pushed Leah as she stood up. ”Think that was enough of a show? Hopefully, that’ll get the rumor mill churning. I can fix it all up later with a post or a video. For now, I think it was enough of a distraction.”

”Yeah, sure. Sure… Fuck, you’re hot when you’re mad. I got no idea how social media shit works. Anyway, you think they’re still alive in there?”

”You sure know how to make a girl feel wanted. I think that was enough space for them. I…know where Chase is coming from. Kind of. I think the two of them really need their own space to work through it and process it all. And it won’t just be fixed today. But, I think we should go enjoy the carnival.”

”Yeah, maybe.” Getting away from April would help with the unwise behavior Leah was tempted to engage in. ”Wanna go see if there’s a water tank to drop Coulson into like last time?”

Sabine grabbed Leah’s hand. ”Sounds good. Hopefully it’s nice and cold.”

It really was starting to be a bit much, and Millicent felt a smidge awkward. She didn't know most of these people. Was it always going to be this dramatic?

She got the sense the drama had started before they even met today. Context clues indicated some sort of drama between Percy and Chase before either of them opened their mouths. Danni had somehow gotten entangled as well as Dorian. To their credit, April had demonstrated some quick thinking in enclosing them in blocks of ice to prevent others from eyeing the drama.

But this wasn't her scene. She knew what was taking center stage and she wasn't going to overshadow them by pretending she had any indication of what was occurring. "Excellent idea. Let's group up later though," she said to no one in particular, but she hoped after some talk the boys would be better.

As Millicent left the ice fort she spotted one of the other new classmates heading towards the clubs and sports sign-ups. Though Millicent had just been there, she was curious how they were doing. So she ran and caught up. "Hey! Sorry, I know you got out of there quick and that was a good idea. How are you, though? Oh, I'm Millicent or Millie, whichever. You're new here too right? Apart from drama central, how are you feeling about it all?"

Victoria van Dyne

Location: Fairgrounds
Equipment / items: Multifield generators
Powers / skills: Physics

The incoming barrage was enough, or perhaps it was a call from one of the few voices whose authority she recognized. The illusion collapsed. At first Victoria was confused, staring at nothing in particular as her mind caught up. And then it all came flooding back.

"Hello, niece! I must say, it was very kind of you to take care of my newest shell, but your services are no longer required."

STAY OUT OF MY HEAD!

She felt the panic hit her, and she started backing up. If she retained a sliver more of control, what would she have done? And even worse, despite all the precautions she took, every back door shut, still, still someone took over her mind again. She felt the tremors that were absent since C.A.G.E. return to her hands, and she tripped over her own feet, falling on her back into the snow.

Maybe it was the fall, maybe it was the cold, but it knocked some sense back into her as she stared up at the sky. She closed her eyes and took a breath.

Allright. Not as okay as I thought I was. Obviously. She thought, but remembered just what the illusion made her see. The details may have been my imagination, but the overarching principle is still there. There's a group of actors dictating which timelines go on and which die. So long as that exists... Incidents like this one don't matter, because my life was lined up long ago and how I get to where I'm going makes no difference. she huffed, letting the winter air cool her hardware.

Still, she preferred Sabine's brand of using mind powers. While Victoria encouraged using one's gifts, there was the addendum of 'for the pragmatic greater good'. This? This was done to her for shits and giggles. That won't do. If nothing I can do can keep my mind safe... then I need an external anchor. Something that I can somehow recognize as a signal that what I see is not real. And something hidden well enough that someone forcing themselves into my mind won't find it and use it against me. So probably no spinning tops.

A possible solution to her conundrum then announced herself. Loudly.

Victoria's gaze ticked over to where Sabine and Leah's shrilling voices were coming from, and what they were saying. She then got up, looking at Andy with a teasing smirk: "Something I missed?"

She then made her way back behind the snow wall, starting to pack together the mother of all snowballs. As she did and the drama quieted down, she sent over a single thought to Sabine: "When you have the time, I have a big favor to ask of you."

Meanwhile, there was a siren that deserved retribution. Vicky's snowball has reached a good foot in diameter before she was satisfied. Time to see how well she could control the repulsor fields in a more real time fashion.

@Forsythe@Kirah:

Jyoti shook her head, giggling as Andy admonished the Mighty Marvels for their behavior. “Being rude is all they know how to do - ‘specially since Em cheated on Rada with Salah.” She grimaced, but there was a certain amount of delight in her eyes - Jyoti lived for mess like this. And as a screaming match started between Leah and Sabine nearby, she screamed - almost with joy. “Omg, gotta get this, brb!!!!!” she took off, pulling out her phone as quickly as she could, as she started filming.

As for Vicky’s attack, her luck was still poor. She managed to shape her gigantic snowball onslaught together, but as it was about to go to attack the siren, her teammate Salah scooped up a gigantic ball of light from the air, and flung it in a perfect collision course, ruining the snowball abomination before it could reach Xenia.

“Awww, that’s too bad. You looked like you really tried there,” Xenia taunted.

Gideon, meanwhile, thought she was moving at record speed, scooping up snowballs. What she didn’t know was that Emily Colter was tapdancing in her head, dilating her perception of time, as Gideon moved impossibly slowly, barely making a single snowball a minute, and flinging them in slow motion as well. “Leeeeeeet’s fuuuuuuuuuuuuck shiiiiiiiiiit uuuuuuuuuuuuup!”

In general, though, the fight was lopsided in favor of the Unity Squad - Momchil was an incredible shot, flying up for a better vantage point and sending snowballs off at the Mighty Marvels with deadly precision. Sveva was blasting snowballs out of the sky before they could reach them, and Rada’s metal form made it easy for her to shake off any hits. Losing Jyoti was a big blow, but not enough to shake their morale.

April Kingston-Gray

Location: Margaret Carter - Winter Carnival
Magic Items: Kingston-Gray Bracelet, River Styx Water, Hair Dying Comb
First Day Fit: Denim jumpsuit and shorts, pink streaked hair and orange tinted sunglasses

April really had thought they were doing the right thing and that their actions would deescalate the situation.

Yes, they were aware of Danni’s claustrophobia - but they also knew that he could push through it, that he’d been drilled by Nemo to face this very fear. Danni was the very reason they had only put up walls, rather than forming a cage - hoping that as long as he had access to the sky, he would be okay. He could fly and get out in less than a second. What April didn’t know, however, was that Danni wasn’t the only one with claustrophobia. April found small spaces comforting - when they’d first been adopted, they would crawl and hide in the tiniest places they could possibly find, hiding inside old dressers and armoires kept in the attic. It didn’t occur to them that someone else present might be claustrophobic - and they knew almost everyone there, and only Danni had this fear.

Well… Danni and Ben.

“Fuck.”

April immediately pulled down the ice walls, the ice turning into water that they directed upwards, spreading out in a thin layer above the entire festival. They bit their lip, tongue sticking out slightly in concentration, as they tried to go for a nice, gentle snowfall - and instead, the water fell down as a rain, mixing with the enchanted snow to produce sleet for a moment or two. It wasn’t what they’d wanted to do, but they weren’t going to stress over it.

What they were going to stress over was giving the new kid a panic attack within the first five minutes of meeting him.

Danni had flown back to the ground, depositing Ben. He looked incredibly shaken, with tears drying on his face. But compared to before Danni had snatched him up, it was night and day. He was better, but still hurting. “Fuck,” April repeated again, unease and shame and guilt spreading through them as they hurried over towards Ben.

“I am so so so so sorry!!” April bit down on their lip again, as their face flushed. “I didn’t know you were claustrophobic and if I had known, I wouldn’t have put you inside the walls - I just wanted to keep people from filming as the two of them were having a breakdown, a-and I knew Danni would be okay as long as he can fly out, so I thought an open concept sort of situation would work - but I am so so sorry. Are you okay? Is there anything I can do to help? Or um…”

They faltered, seeing the way Ben was looking at Chase. They were getting in the way of something. Ben seemed nervous about it, too. “You seem busy, I’m gonna give you space, but let me know how to make this up to you any time and I will, okay? Cool, cool, cool…”

One of these years they’d have a normal, stress free carnival right?

April’s phone vibrated and they took it out, glancing at a text from Andy. They replied quickly -

Dorian watched in horror at how quickly his boyfriend's birthday devolved into chaos. All he had wanted was a singular perfect day to celebrate his boyfriend, and even that was too far out of reach. April had made a small mess of things when the walls came up, tragic good heart wrong scenario type deal, but it grew even larger when they had decided to turn the brown hot chocolate water into a sleet storm. Leah and Sabine were fighting for the spotlight, and Danni had carried away the new kid as he seemed to panic from all the madness. His boyfriend was gone and alone with his bully and ex crush (or so help him it better be an ex crush) and Dorian was just left there gobsmacked at it all.

He would have to remember to thank Leah and Sabine later, because had he acted first he would've given all the students a speech about privacy, the importance of it, and the importance of being a hero, all before using his powers to scramble their phones and delete all the data off of them. Not the nicest thing, but sometimes people needed a harsher lesson as a reminder why. In any case, Dorian wished to salvage what little image was left of Excelsior and the Festival. Storming up to April as they finished a couple texts before grabbing her ear and pulling her along. ”I t'ink enough ‘as been done. You're in time out while I fix t'is.”

Dorian phased into his sister, taking possession of her body before realizing something as he felt the fit of the outfit. ”Are you wearin’ my jumper?!” A string of rapid fire mixes of French and Korean came out of him as he began to swirl the snow around them, taking inspiration from an old classic and creating a whole new outfit out of ice.
Dorian then focused on the optics of it all. Hot chocolate was ruined for all the students now, and there was a brown slurry everywhere. He rolled his eyes before moving his hands almost instinctually, snagging what he could of the slurry, forcing it down under the snow so that it mixed in with the dirt, while pulling from the humidity around them and creating more snow to turn the brown slosh nightmare into a winter wonderland.

Chase could barely meet Ben's eyes, which was ironic given he was already looking down. He looked up towards Danni, a silent thanks as he blasted away, keeping his end of the bargain. Screaming could be heard from around the ice walls that the deranged boy had created. ”Well shit. Is this school always so dramatic?” Chase gestured with his thumb towards the sounds of Sabine and Leah fighting. He'd have to thank Sabine for the mental pep talk later, even if he wasn't sure how.

“Couldn’t tell you.” Ben shrugged. “Though, to hear Danni tell it, this seems to be par for the course.” Ben could feel himself closing in on himself, taking up less space, as if that would keep him from having to have this conversation.

Cascade, April, whatever, was apologizing. Going off a mile a minute. She couldn’t have known. Hell, two weeks ago he hadn’t known. Not really. Damn, Ben thought. She is definitely Danni's sister.

“You didn’t know, and Danni got me out. I’ll be okay.” He waved off the apology, and then focused on Chase again. “Can we go somewhere else... Anywhere else?” He was not wanting to get away from Danni’s friends and family, but more that he didn’t want to have this conversation where people were recording. Especially since he was really worried he was about to be broken up with. He would have to mention to April if she did that again to make it have a way for him to climb out. Slick walls had made his own escape impossible, but if it had hand holds he would have been alright.

Chase held his hand out for Ben to take. His form of teleportation didn’t require physical touch, but with Ben it was always appreciated. He nodded towards him before speaking. ”Pretty sure my roommates within that mess so I think my room is clear to talk in if you want?”

Ben took Chase’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. ”Yeah, that works.” He stepped in closer, not quite fully pressing against Chase, but centimeters apart. ”You’ll probably laugh when you learn who my roommate is.”

Chase noticed the slight distance between himself and Ben, it wasn't much, but to him it felt like a canyon. His smile wavered as he let the shadows engulf them, appearing in an unpacked room with boxes on one side, Chase's side. Sheets hadn't even made it onto the bed as he gestured for Ben to sit on the bare mattress before he bit his lip and began to pace out. ”Is it Danni? That'd be a surprise given how close he and his siblings are. You'd think they'd room together, then again who knows maybe it's only two to a room?”

Ben sat, his hands folded in between his knees. ”Percy,” he said softly. At least he knew that Chase and Percy weren’t rooming. He didn’t think he could have handled that. It would have destroyed him, cracked him like an egg and he wouldn’t have been able to deal at all.

Chase paused in his steps. He swallowed, a lump forming in his throat again. ”Of course.” He let out a short dry chuckle, clearly not finding an ounce of humor in the situation. His hand balled up again, a small imperceptible wince on his face as he felt the cuts on his palms again, having forgotten about it entirely.

Ben was quiet, looking down at his shoes, they were new. His grandmother had given them to him. His mom’s mom, his uncle’s mom. She was too old to care for him. Too old to take him in and let him stay near his mates. Let his world stay stable. Better her than his father’s family. They didn’t get it. None of it. They were all normal. Not even a mutant. Just basic humans. Why was he thinking about them? Oh... of course. Was he about to be rejected? About to be left behind.

”So,” he started, his voice cracking. ”Where do we start?” His limbs felt so heavy.

Chase leaned against the wall, sliding down until he was sat on the floor and staring up at Ben. Staring at his curls, his freckles, watching the way his mouth moved as he spoke as if it may be the last time he gets to. ”Wherever you want…anything you wish to know is yours my King, you know this. There are no lies between us.”

Ben’s eyes burned, and relief washed through him. He stood up, darting from the bed to where Chase sat and wrapped himself around Chase. Between his fear of Chase leaving him and the panic from the ice walls Ben’s emotions were like an open wound. He buried his face into Chase’s chest, old and new tears wetting his shirt.

Genuine shock ran across Chase as his eyes widened at the sudden embrace. His arms moving slower than his heart until he finally held Ben into a hug and pulled him close. ”Hey hey what's this all about now?”

”I- I thought,” Ben started, struggling to speak through his tears. ”I thought, if he was back.” Ben devolved into sobs again. ”You’d leave.”

Chase pulled Ben even tighter, squeezing him to ensure that Ben knew Chase was there. ”Leave? Benny, Babe, why would I leave you? What – I –” Chase ran one hand through his hair as he tried to figure out where any of this was coming from.

It took Ben a few moments more to calm down. To be able to talk. ”I don’t know. He came first.” Ben shrugged. ”He meant a lot to you, but you...” Ben trailed off remembering what had been said outside, what Chase had said at the contest, but he knew that Percy had been Chase’s friend. It was pieces. Fragments of a story that he had been trying to learn without looking at the text. ”I don’t know.” He ended lamely, finally loosening his grip.

”Let's get one thing straight. Yes, he came first, yes he means a lot to me, but he was never my King, never my love, he was a Knight, a Brother at Arms. He was family to me. You are my King. My world. My everything. I will not abandon you for anything, I have told you this and I meant it. I still mean it. I would do anything you asked of me.” Chase grabbed Ben's shoulders, moving him a little further back to ensure they were looking into his eyes as he spoke.

Ben’s face was a mess. Tears and snot soaking it, his eyes red from the amount of crying he had been doing, and he had a headache starting to throb behind those eyes. He needed a cup of tea, but they were in the wrong room for that. Better here than the other one, in case Percy came in. He nodded. ”I’m not a... not... a replacement?” He asked, his voice cracking.

”Absolutely not. Nor could anything ever replace you.” Chase pulled his sleeve over the palm of his hand, using it to wipe Ben's face clear of snot and tears. ”Who told you that? Who said you were a replacement?”

Ben shook his head, ”We’re alike. Danni said it. Not that I was his replacement, but that we were alike. And if you... you hurt him, but he was your friend. And then... and then you said at the contest you wanted him to be hurt.” He let Chase clean his face, though he wanted to go to the bathroom and wash it. But the image of that bathroom made him shudder.

Chase’s grip loosened. His mind going back to the stands, to what he'd said. He couldn't look Ben in the eyes anymore. That felt like a lifetime ago already. ”I didn't even notice the similarities until Danni Boi pointed them out too. Sure there were some things here or there that reminded me of old times but, I figured it was just the feeling of friendship all over again. Didn't exactly have many growing up.” He didn't know how to acknowledge what he'd said back at the stands, all his mind kept telling him to do was stand up and punch the wall to let his feelings go.

“What happened? Why did you hurt him? Why did you shove him into lockers?” His voice cracked on the last question, fear gripping him. He felt like he was about to spiral again. He tried to breathe. Tried to keep himself from spiraling. He went to the window and opened it. He looked out at the bright field of snow. Light and open. He tried to breathe.

Chase took the opportunity to stand up, pacing back and forth in silence as he tried to find a way to answer. Though he appeared more like a caged animal looking for a moment to pounce his way to freedom, ready to attack. ”I guess uh, before we get into that there's more you'll need to know…” His voice taking that same gravely tone. ”I don't talk about my homelife because I hardly had one. My parent's…I…can't even call them that. They showed me love was hidden behind fists, cracked lips, and bruises. Food was always scarce, clothes not much better, and I tried my best to keep my head down to avoid it all. Percival was my one escape.

My parents didn't care that I spent so much time over at his place. It meant less food that needed to be given, less attention, but sometimes it also meant less hands to do the house work. Dishes, clothing, the likes… Those nights when I came home I was shown more love than I could take. But it was fine because the moments before meant more to me, a fantasy to help escape and a hope that one day I could. We did everything together, there was this program back at school and it was weird and only got weirder. But even that we did together, that is until Valentines Day.

He wrote me a letter, confessing his love to me. I…uh…I didn't know how to respond. How to tell him I didn't feel the same way. I was afraid that doing so would push him away, make him leave me alone in this miserable place. That same week we still talked a bit, never about the letter, and near the end of it he'd left. I thought he left the program because I took too long, turns out he was pulled for reasons unknown. Either way, that broke something in me, switched something on that I didn't know was in me…the way my parents showed me love. So I showed him how my family shows love to those who step away. It – fuck! I was a monster before these damn experiments, and deep down I've always believed I deserved them. All the pain I was put through, even from my own family, I deserved it all because of how I treated him.”

Ben listened. He didn’t try to respond to anything. Just let Chase’s story be told. He leaned against the window frame. He turned away from looking out, and watched Chase pace. His heart hurt. An ache that seemed to spread from the center of his chest and into his limbs. But at least Chase never liked Percy that way.

”You are not, and never have been a monster. You were a kid.” Ben paused, if Chase hadn’t been into him and had lashed out would he still think that?

”Your bio parents sound terrible. They don’t deserve you. You didn’t deserve what they did to you. You’re not perfect, but that is okay. No one is.” He thought of his father’s parents yelling in the kitchen. He thought of the urn that he never saw again. He closed his eyes.

Chase moved away from Ben, towards the opposite wall on his side of the room before finally he let out a frustrated yell. His fist collided with the wall as a hole formed around it, the sound of the punch echoing throughout the room. ”But did they deserve what happened to them? Did they deserve their only son in a state of rage and narcotics rampaging through the house as he slaughtered them?! I dont feel like a fucking kid Ben I feel like a weapon!”

Ben’s eyes had been closed, they snapped open and he flinched when Chase punched the wall screaming. Adrenaline spiked through him, but Chase was on the other side of the room. And what Chase said...

He didn’t even know how to respond to that. He didn’t know how he felt about it. He wanted to comfort Chase. He wanted to be at his side, and rub his back and say soothing things. He didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to fix this. He was quiet.

”Chase,” he finally said, his voice quiet, barely loud enough to cross the room. He didn’t know what to say next. He didn’t say anything, he stayed put near the window, pressed against it as if knowing the window was there, he’d be okay. He could climb the wall. He’d be fine.

His back had been turned to Ben as he spoke, and as the soft whisper hit his ears Chase whipped around, his voice dark and full of agony. ”What?!” Shadows darkened around him and then he saw the look in Ben's eyes. The fear as he pressed against the wall, and all of it melted away as his legs gave out and he fell down to the floor. ”Benny no…I – I'm sorry. I shouldn't talk to you like that, you don't deserve that.”

Ben took one tentative step forward, and then another, and then he was kneeling next to Chase. ”I am so sorry that happened and you had to deal with it. I can’t stand to see you upset like this. That shouldn’t have happened. None of it. No one should have allowed it to happen.” He reached forward, fingers shaking.

Chase grabbed Ben's hand gently. Holding it within his own hands to help stop the shaking. ”This. “ Chase kissed Ben's hand, his voice quiet. ”This is why I told Danni not to tell you. You're shaking. You're scared of me, of what I could do. I didn't want you to know because I cannot lose you. Not you Benny Boi.”

Ben squeezed Chase’s hand. ”It has been a hell of a day.” He sighed, ”Yes, I am scared. I’m scared of a lot of things. But I’m not scared of you not of my knight. You wouldn’t hurt me on purpose. You’ve had the opportunity to. I’ve been more at your mercy than anyone's ever. But you walked me through my panic and we are going to be okay. I’m not going to leave you. I don’t think I could. I... I can’t deal with that. But I also am in a room with someone who is capable of god knows what, so yeah I was scared. Because the last time someone yelled, the last time I was this upset, I lost my parents and I was trapped for days. I am always scared of being trapped and today has been especially trying.”

Chase’s lips began to quiver. Trying hard not to cry at Ben's words. He pulled Ben's hand closer, pulling Ben closer and into another tight embrace as he moved his boyfriend into his lap and began to cuddle him, nuzzling his face into Ben's neck. He didn't know what to say, what do to, but he knew he needed Ben's presence right now.

Ben allowed himself to be pulled into Chase’s lap. He wrapped his arms around him, clinging to Chase like he was drowning. And Ben felt like he had been. He felt wrung out like an old cloth. His body hurt. His head hurt. His heart hurt. He hadn’t thought he had more tears, but he did, and they fell. He shook like a leaf. Every emotion from the day seemed to have hollowed him out. But he felt warm and safe pressed up against Chase.

Chase sniffled, tears down his cheeks, as he laughed softly to himself. ”I really need you to stop bathing in Axe. It's burning my eyes.”

”Sorry,” Ben sniffed.

”It's alright. You're worth it. Maybe later we can wash it off…together?”

Ben shuddered slightly. ”Did you see that shower? I was thinking I’d end up using the gym showers.”

”First thing I did when I came in today babe. Had to make sure they were good for you, but we can always take a short shadow into the gyms.”

Ben sighed, and wiped at his face. ”I need a cup of tea.”

”As you wish.” Shadows stirred beneath Chase's bed, like a monster lurking nearby, before a present appeared wrapped up and sliding out and then Ben's kettle. ”Oh? Is that…a belated Christmas gift? Look like someone's been good this year.” Chase smirked. ”Go on, open it.”

Ben sat up, looking at the present. ”You got me something? I didn’t get you anything... I don’t know when your birthday is.” He picked up the box and started to open it.

Chase waved the concern away. ”It's fine. But if you must know it was six days before meeting you. So you already gave me the perfect birthday gift…you.”

Ben wrinkled his nose doing the math. ”The 20th or the 11th? I’m on September 10th.” He finished getting the box open and carefully removed the tea cup inside. ”This is awesome!” Ben wrapped his free arm, the one not holding the tea cup around Chase. ”I love this, thank you.”

”The 11th. Figured now you have a cup for home and one for school. I saw it and thought of you. Didn't think it would survive the road trip so I didn't bring it and then well all this happened and…anyways, teas in my bag, I started carrying a few pouches around incase you ever craved it. No milk or sugar im afraid.”

Ben kissed Chase. ”Thank you, I love you.”

Chase melted into the kiss before freezing in place as Ben told him he loved him. His eyes were wide and every word he tried to say only came out in a nervous stammer. Love? Ben…Chase had been thinking the same but, was it too soon? It felt too soon. He didn't know. He had a sudden urge to text Percy and ask him how long one needed to wait to confess their love for their boyfriend. Even in previous relationships with girls Chase had never uttered the word, not that they ever went far.

Ben felt Chase freeze, and he realized what he had just said. His eyes went wide. But he had meant it. He had been dealing with the overwhelming fear of losing Chase all day. He had thought about everything that had happened over the last few weeks and he loved Chase. He hadn’t planned on saying it right now. He had almost said it a moment ago, when they were cuddled together. He had thought about it when he was learning about what happened between Chase and Percy. It had been there, floating around all day. He had sort of known the day prior when Matt hadn’t allowed them to see each other. The whole day had sucked. He kept wanting to tell Chase something or ask him something. He didn’t want to be apart from him if he could help it. Maybe that was a little co-dependent, but he didn’t care.

”Yeah, I’m gonna stand by that. Don’t feel obligated to say it back. Not until you’re ready. But I do love you.”

Chase grabbed the tea cup from Ben's hand and gently placed it onto the floor. Lifting up Ben and taking him towards his bed as he peppered him with kisses on his face, lips, cheeks, and neck. When they finally reached his destination he laid Ben carefully down and kissed him deep. ”You are my Holy Grail, My King, My World, and My Love. I Love you so much Benjamin Moss, I do not think there is anything that could make that more true. You are my Arthur and I your Knight.”

Ben kissed Chase back, he wrapped an arm around him for stability, glad that the bed was close enough he wasn’t being carried far. He blushed and giggled at Chase. ”How did you know my middle name?”

”What do you mean?”

”Arthur. That’s my middle name.”

”That is so fucking hot. If it wasn't for the fact that Danni wants to meet us in a bit I would say we pray here and now.”

Ben laughed, ”Yeah, we should probably get going. Guess I’ll have to wait for the tea too.” He sighed.

”We gotta get you a thermos for some tea on the go.” Chase pulled out his phone and shot a text off to Percy, changing his contact name as well.

Ben wrinkled his nose. ”I suppose, it’ll do. But we probably should get going. I don’t want Danni to think we are abandoning him.”

”Yeah yeah, I was just texting. Cmon let's go, we dont wanna miss the festival.”

Ben stood up and took Chase’s hand. ”No worries. Where should we meet Danni?”

Chase shrugged. ”He said the tree and then failed to mention which one. So…”

”Uh, let’s just go to the entrance, and I’ll text him from there.” Ben pulled out his phone and sent Danni a text in their group chat.

Fit check, and Letterman jacket

As the girl talked, uh, hmm, what was her name? She looked kind of familiar. She was explaining about people cheating on each other and Andy realized she did not know anyone at the school outside of the team basically. Victoria, sure, but did she count? And obviously the Young Avengers team. Huh... Well considering she didn’t know anyone at the school prior to the start of it, other than her girlfriend who had dumped her unceremoniously and gone back to her home dimension she was doing pretty good comparatively. Even if she didn’t know a single person on the field by name. Maybe she should pay more attention to who else was in her classes?

Some weird brown rain came down for a moment, gross. Was that April again? What the hell was going on over there that they were messing around like that. She’d probably have to get her letterman jacket taken to the cleaners because of the weird brown sludgy rain. At least it didn’t smell gross.

Andy got several texts back to back from April. She ducked back behind a barrier. The fight was not going all that well. But all well, she didn’t care. She was having fun and that was what mattered. She quickly read the texts. That explained a few things.

Wait... Danni and Percy were dating? She stared at the text. It definitely said that Percy and Danni had almost broken up. What? Weren’t Dorian and Percy dating? That was a weird trio... She supposed if Percy was the hinge, and Dorian and Danni just pretended that wasn’t happening? Well they weren’t biologically related anyway she supposed. Weird. But who was she to judge?

One of the texts was also from Percy, but it looked like he had been forced to write it while held at gunpoint. She had seen enough of his texts to know he did not text like that. She frowned and assumed Chase was behind it.

Andy was starting to feel like she should move over there. She sighed and then yelled, ”Gideon, do you wanna stay here or go with me? I’m gonna go find April and find out the hell is going on.” She blinked, realizing that her girl friend was moving in slow motion. Was that going to be an issue?

Gideon paused for a moment, torn between racing off after her hot girlfriend and destroying people with snowballs. “Something going on? Did Danni flame on again?”

She shrugged, Gideon was still going in slowmotion. If she did want to join, whoever was doing that to her would need to stop. ”April put up ice walls, Sabine and Leah are fighting, and Chase showed up and Percy was there. He’s the guy from the party that was messing with Percy.” Andy hopped the fence, out of the field. ”Do not feel obligated to come with. I’ll be back if I don’t get to punch Chase for being a dick.” She waved to the others, they had been having the snowball fight with. ”Later, maybe.” Andy walked off toward where she had seen the ice walls go up, and had heard Sabine and Leah argue, though their shouting had stopped.

Danni had clocked Chase and Percy in the air and had specifically turned his back so neither Ben nor he would see. Even though he really wanted to see. And listen. Really, he should get best friend points for that! Non-besties would have scooped and Danni didn't do exactly that so he was at least on the best friend charts… right?

Danni landed on the roof Percy was alone on and the big smile and the thousand questions he usually had buzzing behind his teeth faded away, until Danni kicked awkwardly at the ground. He saw a little stack of rocks and knew that was Chase's handiwork so things must not have gone… terribly? “So… um. Am I burnin’ ‘is skateboards up or anyt'in’?” Danni asked quietly, hesitantly. “Am I burnin’ up my… idk, camera? Clothes?

Percy was quiet for a moment, still sitting in the same position he’d been when Chase had been here, the G’raha Tia card in his hand, along with his sobriety chip. He’d meant to teleport back down to the others, but the conversation was weighing heavily on him, and he’d been lost in his thoughts for a moment, only snapping out of them as Danni alighted on the roof.

He shook his head. “He’s not the same person who hurt me,” Percy said, his voice strangely calm - the sort of calm that came after intense emotions and tears. He frowned slightly at Danni’s second question, though. “Why would you be burning your camera and clothes?”

“Uh, I mean, idk? I didn't t'ink you'd actually want me ta do it but um, you were real upsetti by t'is whole t'in’ and… and its all my fault ‘cause like, I did a Danni and sent everyone stuff ‘bout t'e ‘ot chocolate stand, includin’ t'em, and t'en everyone showed up and I didn't even t'ink ‘bout ‘ow t'at was gunna make a whole t'in’ and I ‘ad a plan and you said you were ‘urt and we're best friends and t'at means I can't ‘urt ya but I did and I just don't wanna lose my bestie.” Danni stumbled and stuttered over the words. “I'm- I'm just scared we're gunna go back ta ‘fore Fred cause I don't want t'at.”

Percy bit his lip. He’d thought by telling Danni he wasn’t mad at him, he’d sidestepped this. He felt emotionally exhausted, worn out from the roller coaster of feeling betrayed and abandoned by Danni, reconciling with Chase, and learning what had happened to him in the aftermath of their friendship. “A month ago, I probably would have,” he admitted, as he stared at the sobriety chip.

And as much as he’d thought he didn’t have tears left to cry, he did, as he took a shuddering breath. “I-I would have ended the friendship before you could do it - before you chose Chase over me. And I-I know that you did it to help, I know, but I can’t… I can’t help this feeling of pain that after I told you everything he did to me, you went behind my back and made friends with him… that I didn’t even get to be a part of the conversation on what would happen between Chase and me, that it was decided for me… I-it hurts the same way it hurt all last semester, knowing that none of you cared about me as a person - that I was just there because Dorian was and if we were to break up, I’d be all alone.”

“Oh, Spicy. But I told ya, we were friends t'oigh? We were friends back t'en too. I don't know why ya t'ought t'at but I can't really fix t'at…” Danni, already on the verge of tears, couldn't hold them back but he did bite his lip to keep from sobbing. He wrapped his arms around himself, doing his best to keep from touching Percy when all he wanted was to hug him. “I… I am so sorry, Spicy. I don't really know what ta do ta ‘elp, ta make up for t'is. I… I didn't want ta ‘urt ya, I just… I saw t'e opp and I took it? It just seemed ta make sense. I'm so, so sorry. Idk what I can do to make it up to you. I didn't mean ta make decisions for you… I just… assumed… you'd want ‘im ta make up for it all…”

“I don’t know what I want from him,” Percy carefully set the card down so it wouldn’t get damaged, tucking it inside the beanie April had made him, before hugging his knees to his chest and resting his head on them. “I don’t know if I want to be his friend or never see him again, if I want to ask Sabine to wipe every memory involving him from my head. I know I want to quickly teleport to the grocery store ten blocks over with the broken lock on their liquor cabinet. But that won’t solve anything. I don’t know if I want to cry or scream.”

The tears were coming out harder now, and for a moment, he couldn’t even form words, until he continued. “I want to be able to hug you right now, to be the kind of friend you need. I want to be normal. I want to be your friend - y-your best friend.”

Danni broke into ugly sobs and he hit the ground next to Percy, still giving him a little space. “Yo-you are my best friend!” Danni sobbed.. “All t'e friendships are different a-and ju- just cause we can't ‘ug do-doesn't mean we cant. I… I just wanna be your friend, Sp-Spicy. No-no ma-matter ‘ow t'at looks Spicy and ‘eyes, at t'e t'e e-end o’ t'e day, I just wanna make ya feel better, okay?”

Percy nodded, his vision blurry. Hearing this from Danni was easing the hurt, easing the pain. And maybe - maybe he’d never be able to hug his friends but… it had taken him time to loosen up around Dorian and that touch didn’t hurt. Maybe he wasn’t ready yet for contact with Chase, but… They had hugged over winter break and it hadn’t hurt. It’d been terrifying but he had done it. Admittedly, it had been following a healing session from James, allowing his body to feel calm and relaxed - and not after a marathon of heartbreaking confessions. He moved his hands off his knees and slowly inched one over to Danni, the hand trembling as he held onto Danni’s hand tightly. The crying became a little harder, the sobs a little thicker - but he forced himself to hold on, doing his best to take calming breaths, to reassure himself that he wasn’t in any danger. He just wanted to make this connection with a friend.

Danni held his breath as Percy scooted his hand over, barely able to believe it - Percy was initiating contact. It was a rare event and Danni didn't want to mess it up so when his friend's hand clasped his, Danni gave him that squeeze back as relief flooded him. Percy wasn't upset enough with him that he wanted to end their friendship, go back to Percy thinking he was just… well, Danni wasn't that so it was good Percy wouldn't think that. Danni fetched out one of his handkerchiefs and offered it to Percy to dry his tears and blow his nose. Tears poured down his face still and as Percy cried harder, he did too. He could feel the headache coming on but it was followed by relief. He sat there, letting his frustrations out as Percy let out his, and quietly fist pumped into the air.

A little while later, once the two of them had begun to calm, Percy pulled out his phone. He saw a text from Trojan Horse and he barely read it before swiping it away. He would answer it later… but not right now, not when he was just starting to feel under control again. Instead, he navigated to his chat with Dorian, and wrote -
