Serah took Rhylaen's hand without hesitation and gave her a firm handshake, positively beaming as she complimented her. 'Rhylaen's a really nice person,' Serah thought to herself, even if the girl wasn't really expecting her to feel any animosity over it. "Dragonfly is really impressive, aren't they? I couldn't do a thing against your jamming... I felt like I had to take a gamble for my team to stand a chance against it,” she'd admit a little sheepishly. "You and Griff really gave me a lot of trouble. I'm just happy you'll be on my side next time, ehehe...”

When she mentioned Griff, her eyes narrowed a bit and she looked back at the screen, letting go of Rhylaen's hand. Serah crossed her arms, watching as he split off to go assist Elora. It felt good to cut right through that annoying 'Shining Fingers' module of his, but part of her still wasn't satisfied. 'I want to win,' she thought to herself. A burning, competitive flame flickered inside of her, lit by a burning desire to beat Griff and not be outdone by him. Even if Shiva outclassed Atty, even as Griff was clearly an expert pilot- Serah wanted to win. She'd need to practice a lot to make that happen, but...

"Hey! Catch!"
'Just you wa-- uh, huh?'

Her thoughts were suddenly cut short as the sound of Zel-Ghin's voice registered, the girl blinking and turning around to see what the fuss was about... only to get clocked right in the forehead by a lollipop.

"Ow-!” the girl yelped. "Hey, what was that for?!” she'd yell at him, just the tiniest bit upset. Rubbing her forehead, she looked at the ground and saw he'd tossed another stick of candy at her. Crouching down to pick it up, she scratched her cheek a bit in confusion. Looking back at Zel-Ghin, she'd ask: "Sheesh, how many of these do you have?" with no small amount of exasperation. "If you wanted to share again, you should come over here and do it yourself. What are you doing over there anyway? Come watch with us,” she waved over to invite him, then turned to the action again.

The situation had unfolded further in the brief moment Serah had been distracted. Shiva was firing on a charging Mother Goose while Angel Zero tried to sneak around her and recover Atty's lost blade. Serah puffed up her cheeks a bit- that wasn't his to use! Only Atty could properly wield that thing, or so she thought anyway. In truth, AZ managed to replicate the system Atty used to power it and it flickered right back to life, just like how it used to be. Serah definitely didn't know how to feel about that one.

But more importantly, she'd noticed how Aurora had been left all alone in the field. She didn't know if this was the plan or if people had abandoned her, but what Serah did know, is that what Sleepy was doing wasn't normal. Aurora had told her they were tempermental, that they didn't like others much- but the frame was oddly calm. Even she could see that much. But judging from the hellfire it unleashed, the pilot behind it was...

'Aura... are you doing okay...?' Serah would think to herself, slightly worried about her friend as she softly bit down on her lip.

Ava Lane

That was...odd.

Ava could not help but think that after she destroyed her target, the Rex Artus.

That last shot felt too accurate given the circumstances. In fact, it was not merely a long-range shot pinpointed at her location, fired completely without the targeting system due to her cloaking wings still functioning. But it was a shot fired at where she had precisely moved, almost as if the pilot could perfectly predict her movements.

It could be luck, but she had the feeling it was something more.

It was the sort of inexplicable 'miracle' that she had experienced in the battlefield, on account of her special ability that had her given the designation of 'Humanity Potential'.

The same one that had just occurred, which allowed her to take down her target swiftly.

Well, even beyond that, in Ava's opinion, it was a rather rookie mistake as a sniper to open fire and reveal one's location to a target that would be able to reach you before you can relocate. But she digressed.

Humanity's Potential was supposed to be a very rare ability. Enough so that it had made the brass accept her into the military despite pressure from her father, who had leveraged the important position of Albion Group as one of the largest Framewerk manufacturers

If this project they were in had two of such people...or perhaps more? In any case, it was something that, to Ava, made the project the Professor was working on more and more suspicious in terms of its importance.

Just more things to be added to the pile of mystery surrounding this project.

Piles that Ava could not afford to dwell on for now, as she found herself under fire from Horst's heavy assault gun.

Fortunately, her experience allowed her to react quickly. This, combined with her high synchronicity with her framewerk, meant that the response from Argent Wings was almost instantaneous, with practically zero delays between her control 'input' and the 'output' of her framewerk movement, allowing Ava to perform the almost inexplicable manoeuvre of parrying the bullets with her vibroblade, as she pilot Argent Wings to safety [Sychronised Agility].

Horst's pilot, Arrish, attempted to open a dialogue, something about being a dance partner, but frankly, Ava did not pay it much mind.

This was supposed to be a simulated battlefield, after all. Unnecessary banters only serve as a distraction that could endanger oneself and the team.

Thus, as Arrish was in the middle of taunting her, Argent Wings already charged forward, the marker lights mounted on its chassis lit up to mark her target. Specifically, the weak parts in between the armour that were necessary to allow the range of motions for a framewerk to function, given what she knew of Horst's model [Academic: Framewerk Technology].

At a close range, Ava planned for the sudden bright light to serve as a momentary distraction as the holographic illusion from Argent Wings' cloaking wings was deployed once more.

In the instant that the marker light hit Horst, Argent Wings had deftly shifted around its holographic copies, making it hard to parse which one was the real Argent Wings, as they charged from different directions at Horst, attempting to cut through the spots marked by the lights earlier.

However...

It was at that moment that fire rained upon the battlefield.

Sleeping Thunder had fired the whole arsenal of weapons available to it, exhibiting an incredible level of firepower that would be able to change the tide of a battle in an instant from sheer destruction.

Even Ava, who had some idea of the capability of Sleeping Thunder. Hence, referring to Sleeping Thunder as a 'mobile artillery' and designating neutralising it as their 'win condition', they did not expect this level of firepower.

It seemed that, like her own framewerk, Argent Wings, Sleeping Thunder had received quasi-legal modification to push its firepower to the absolute limit. However, those sorts of modifications came with a cost, namely that they damaged your weapon system, which would risk them malfunctioning.

Meaning if they survived this, it would open an opportunity to take down Sleeping Thunder.

But, of course, first, she had Horst to deal with. Or rather, she was already in the middle of a charging motion and haphazardly backing out now would leave her exposed to a counterattack.

Amidst the backdrop of fires from Sleeping Thunder, Argent Wings continued its charge toward Horst, with only Ava's experience allowing her to remain calm and focused on her current target despite the sheer destruction done on the other side of the battlefield.

Zel-Ghin

"A bounty reward for dealing with that woman. I hate cheaters." Zel-Ghin replied swiftly and with a bit of a snarl as his eyes momentarily set on Rhylaen. His hands slipped into his pockets again after pushing himself off the pillar and approaching the two women. Zel-Ghin pulled out his entire right hand full of lolipops from his jacket pocket. "A few hundred if you count the ones in my room." He gave a slight shrug and put them all back in his jacket, approaching in a laidback if not a bit nonchalant manner.

"Watch eh? What's there to watch anyways? No fun to be had watching my brother play around with a bunch of weaklings. Team apple or team mango. It doesn't really matter. I should have won this. The simulation is clearly broken. There's just no way that I would be taken down by some regular joes. I just hope that they blow up that cocky little kittycat. She needs to be taught a lesson." He blew some air through his mouth and scoffed, then he took out his right arm, pointing his hand and finger at Rhylaen.

"You stole my clear victory from me. I will never forgive you for that. To think someone like you would be able to stop someone like me. What an universal joke. Nak Degalza." He pointed the palm of his hand upwards, giving a slight shrug as he spoke in a condescending tone and huffed.

"You aren't like the rest of these weaklings right, woman? Unless it's all about the framewerk? The Atty is kind of beautiful. Well if the simulation were without errors of any kind, then it's my framewerk that is flawed and useless and deserves to be destroyed. After all. Doesn't failure equal death in a real battle hm? If you are useless you just get thrown away... I guess we'll see once we get there. Bet most of these guys won't make it past the first encounter. But me? I was made for a war like this. I just hope it won't be dull. I will rip these Cruxi into shreds and then whatever other enemy my brother point me towards." He said with a smirk on his lips, taking out his handheld console from his jacket pocket and booting up his videogame, in this case it was to resume his boss battle at the highest difficulty against "Titanmaiden".

Soon enough sounds could be heard of retro-sounding lasers being fired. "Take that you cocky bastard. You are fighting Zel-Ghin. Sorry but I like my women less robot and more short and small. Not with shuttle-sized bumps and cheap gimmicks." He snickered and seemingly momentarily seem to forget about his unfortunate defeat in the simulation.

Rhylaen

Rhylaen would have said something nice to Zel-Ghin, too, but he spoke before she could -- calling her a cheater, and saying she stole his victory. Her wide eyes narrowed, and she spread her wings partway, baring her teeth. "Not 'clear victory' if no win. And not cheating! Especially not for war. If 'made for war', you must know." She settled her wings back against her shoulders. "Besides. Bad certainty is easy for beating. Makes you reckless." She paused, watching him pull out his game. "You should watch. We are team -- and understanding teammates important for fighting. Important for surviving -- for all."

She turned back to the screen just in time to witness Aurora and Sleeping Thunder unleash a rain of fire on the field. It was an impressive display of power. But Griff and Shiva had moved away, as had Angel Zero, leaving Sleeping Thunder open before Mother Goose's charge. That was bad. If Mother Goose took out Sleeping Thunder, that would probably win Mango the fight. All that would be left would be mopping up the other, smaller framewerks. Not good at all.

“Stop throwing candy!” Lorenzo ordered. Liisa added: “You’re supposed to stop combat after exiting virtual reality. Furthermore, lollipops are an inefficient weapon to utilize.”
Lorenzo groaned, and facepalmed as Ritsu walked in, her attitude still agitated. “Keep observing quietly. Any further disruption will not be tolerated.”

Minerva swept through the devastated alleys of the simulated colony, and rounded the block to flank Mema-Ka, who at the time was making plans with Arrish. Elora blinked at the mention of the holy grail, not first realizing what he meant. That did not last long, as Horst then bounded off to confront Argent Wings with powerful concrete-cracking leaps while Raptor hoisted up Logic Diver’s battered chassis, and hoisted it up to his back with the support of the Multiple Arms system, like carrying a giant egg.
“B-Bweeh!” Elora yelped as she was lifted, but quickly realized the plan, and readjusted aim with the ABR once she was in position, covering Raptor’s blind spot.

Raptors then slid to the corner, the Markerlight readied for incoming movement, which turned out to be correct as Argo then rounded the corner, Gatling Gun spewing out death with every fifty thousand credit, custom-tooled cartridge at twelve thousand rounds per minute.
“No!” Elora screamed, and crouched down on her seat, hands on her head as she endured the horrible noise of bullets clanging against Raptor, and in turn reverberating on Logic Diver, akin to a bell. Raptor was unable to dodge due to the heavy load it was carrying. As a Heavy Frame, it managed to endure the assault, though it was left battered and full of circular dents due to major damage, as holes spewed out smoke. One of the Rocket Anchors was hit, halving the effectiveness of the system, and the central chassis had bent, causing a small risk to the Kattai nanomachines crunching the Frame in an improper angle instead of smoothly transitioning. However, Logic Diver was mostly spared from the fire, only incurring minor damage to the sides of the Frame’s armor.

Raptor fired with the Marker Light, and managed to hit Argo’s chassis due to the melee range of the encounter, marking the Frame for team Apple members and enabling better accuracy. Minerva acrobatically retreated after her assault, her speed unmatched in the war-torn arena, and Elora could only shiver as she heard Stella’s bloodcurdling scream, and muted her channel. “Engaging Argo! Raptor has taken heavy damage, but Argo’s marked!” She informed Team Apple’s channel, though Aurora had by this point muted Team Apple from her comms.

Griff then intercepted Argo as she was heading back, having placed itself at the crucial center of conflict, where the two fronts had conjoined. He sliced with the Trillium blade, managing to catch Argo by the tip of the Gatling Gun, severing the barrel in half. This was followed by a stab of the Multiform Rod’s spear, which struck Argo, heavily damaging the Frame’s chassis as it punched through the armor, nearly shattering her inner systems.

Horst, who had disengaged from the rest of team Apple, headed north to confront Ava.The Frame shot at Argent Wings with the Heavy Assault Gun, the bullets being sliced by the Vibroblade as Ava reacted with extreme agility. However, the heavy rounds still carried enough velocity that even when cut the split halves caused heavy dents in the Frame’s armor, bending one of Argent’s Cloaking Wings. Argent Wings returned fire with the Markerlights, which successfully landed on Horst. However, despite the attempt to flash Arrish (not like that, dammit), when Ava attempted her illusion tactics, Arrish’ sharp eye allowed him to follow the real one with the damaged wing past the duplicates, and parry the One-Winged Angle’s Vibroblade slash with the Bastion, cutting the shield in two and destroying it but giving Horst the crucial moment to counterattack as Argent Wings took a tactical retreat, like a hit-and-run hawk.

Meanwhile, on the western front, Bugatti had taken drastic measures, and given Sparks access to Cockroach and its drone control system. As a result, Guinevere may now control drones that are in the control range of Cockroach even if Guinevere itself is out of range. Then, he gave bold words to Stella, the Lilim’s scattered memories refocused as she was reminded not to lose her way.

The Steel Raven Lilim spread its proverbial wings: the Mother Goose was no longer walking forward, but instead taking longer strides, and leaned forward into a quarterback charge with the extended Bastion held before it right through the second megabuilding, scattering the pieces explosively. This was no clumsy colossus, but a terrifying titan, and it was coming right at Sleeping Thunder and the rest of team Apple.

However, Jake kept his cool under pressure, and activated the REAP system: tendrils formed from nanotechnology fired out and snatched Atty’s Plasma blade, absorbing the weapon technology into Angel Zero’s systems, fully replacing the Laser Blade. He fired upon Argo as the Frame was passing by, the heavy shots managing to connect on the Frame’s shoulder, causing major damage and punching a hole through the Extreme Boosters, disabling them. He then intercepted Mother Goose, as a cloud of obscuring smoke erupted around the giant Frame, blinding Stella while ensuring his own battlefield awareness was not hindered with Recon Drones. He managed to avoid the Shredder Shotgun blasts that came his way, only to be struck with the Bastion, causing the Frame to fall, leaving them open to a vicious slash of a Ripper Claw, rending the right arm and right leg of the the Frame and most of the torso chassis, causing it to creak as it fell apart, ending Jake’s mission in the virtual reality.

[Jake disconnected]

However, Stella’s rush wasn’t yet done, as Mother Goose launched a salvo of missiles at Sleeping Thunder, who also walked forward. The Arklight Thunder weapon system generated a low-yield electric field that detonated the missiles prematurely, reducing the damage by avoiding direct hits.

However, Aurora then prepared for a gambit that nobody could anticipate: she directed the rest of the electric charge to rearm Sleeping Thunder’s Particle Cannon back to full capacity: a risky maneuver that could easily blow up in Aurora’s face. However, she managed to give it just the right amount of voltage before its circuits were damaged, a calculation only someone capable of advanced engineering and out-of-the-box weapon design could accomplish. [Particle Cannon resisted malfunction]. Still, the Particle Cannon’s coils were smoking, indicating that the process wasn’t that safe. Still, it produced results, allowing Aurora to unleash a [Flash In The Dark]:

Sleeping Thunder, kept steady with stabilized legs, activated Thunder Fall, with all safety measures and inhibitors nullified. The first weapon to be unleashed was the full charge of the Particle Cannon, further overclocked into a devastating horizontal pillar of world-searing light:

The blast lasted for three seconds.

For the first second, Mother Goose’s Bastion held until it was destroyed.

For the next second, Guinevere’s Repair Drone jumped in to intercept the shot, followed by Mother Goose dropping the wrecked Bastion and attempting to block the beam with the palm of her free hand, destroying both.

For the third and final second, the blast had already began waning down, but not before leaving Mother Goose’s frontal armor plating melting from the aftermath, white-hot. The Particle Cannon, by the end, had also melted. [Particle Cannon malfunction]

This was then followed up with a power Moonbreaker railgun that punched through the melting armor, causing the Frame’s chassis to turn concave. Yet the mighty Mother Goose still held on, and raised it’s Rocket Hammer. The railgun itself also melted. [Moonbreaker malfunction].

Then came the Dragon Wing armor-piercing and incendiary missiles, which, akin to flaming serpents, exploded violently at Mother Goose, engulfing the giant Frame in flames and blowing open a hole in the Frame’s fortress-like leg armor, the Frame like a wicker man set ablaze in unholy ritual. Shiva then assisted Sleepy, delivering Marker Light fire in a double burst as Mother Goose pondered forward.
But the Frame still held on, the goliath yet to be bested by a barrage that would have taken down any other Frame. [Missile Launchers resisted malfunction.]

But of course, while Sleeping Thunder was primarily a long-range unit, it still possessed deadly Gatling Guns, the chambers spinning so fast when unleashing a storm of electrical bullets that the cylinders turned red, and nearly fell off. [Gatling Guns resisted malfunction]. The bullets had caused critical damage to Mother Goose’s exposed leg with assisted accuracy, and the Frame’s torso started to loudly creak and groan, unable to support the heavy upper body with one leg only. But Stella still held on, even during her fall: as the head of the hammer began to fall, Stella activated the rockets attached to the Weapon System, and it slammed right on the central head of Sleeping Thunder like a meteor from the heavens, staking its legs deep into the earth and flattening the core like a car in a compactor.

But just before impact and Aurora’s virtual death, Aurora had activated The Arklight Thunder’s Tesla field over maximum charge. It encased the arachnid Frame in a bright yellow bubble of arcing electricity, and the electricity spread through the damaged torso, reaching Stella. Her Lilim body was shocked by the insanely high amperes, reformatting the Lilim as Mother Goose exploded, taking Sleeping Thunder with it. Sleepy's heavy weaponry ammunition also detonated in a chain reaction so intensive and world-shattering that it actually caused the virtual reality itself, run by the most advanced computers in the galaxy, to stutter for a second due to lag. Shiva was caught partially in the explosion, blowing an arm and destroying the Multiform Rod that previously held it.

[Aurora disconnected]
[Stella disconnected]

However, even with Sleeping Thunder gone, her rage continued to linger in the battlefield like a wraith, its missiles seeking out team Mango like the grudge of a ghost.

The missiles flew towards the northern building, and sharply turned over it, the missiles having locked on to Cockroach through the obstacle thanks to Elora’s combat data. It was a moment that Bug couldn’t help but compare to the other time he came face to face with death in VR. Only now, it seemed so much more visceral, and real as the HYDRA shells also came whistling down, the combined firepower of the missiles and shells carpet bombing his vicinity so heavily that the ground might as well have been made of perpetuating explosions instead of concrete.

But even in such a situation, as the Repair Drones blew up around him, and his Frame’s armor was broken down and scattered, Bugatti held steadfast against the calamity, his determination to survive like a flaring comet of passion. In the aftermath, the Cockroach was a mess: it’s limbs were scattered and bent out of shape, it’s exterior systems all smashed apart, and the entire area clouded by black smoke that slowly dissipated into the broken sky, leaving nothing but a multitude of craters in it’s wake. Yet, true to its namesake, the pilot and his core chassis surrounding him had managed to survive the near-impossible odds, his [Indomitable Will] having carried him through the Fire and Flames [Speed reduced to 1].

Argo was not as lucky: though Minerva was spared the wrath of the HYDRA shells, the Dragon Wing missiles nonetheless found their target, and after the [Genetically Engineered] [Clone] had dodged three super-speed missiles in a row the rest had caught up to her, resulting in the supremely fast Frame losing the arm holding the broken Gatling Gun as well as the left leg [Speed reduced by 4]. That was when Minerva realized who her opponent would be: a less-crippled Shiva.

Arrish Duval

Neither will alone nor strength alone will be enough.

"Team Apple, listen up, this Arrish Duval taking direct command." Horst leaned up against the wall and handled the Heavy Assault RIfle in both of its hands, keeping the weapon close. The Horst had always been a heavy framewerk but without the Bastion anymore she was still exposed at all sides. "Aurora's last command was emotionally compromised before going KIA, so we're going to do something different, do you hear me? Follow me and we might just come out of this alive." He knew he was stepping on dangerous territory, but he trusted that Mema-ka would fall in line with him and they could still make it out of this with something that resembled team work.

Everyone here was trying their best. At least, that's what Arrish wanted to believe. Their had been sacrifices on both sides of this battlefield, with Serah sending her framewerk plummeting from the sky like a soaring eagle and making her death mark onto Rhylaen. Jake had died doing his duty, rushing down Mother Goose —a framewerk that he surely had no chance of defeating alone— with the salvaged remains of Atty in his hands. Aurora and Stella had made the greatest sacrifices yet, going down in a blaze of beautiful glory before taking out one another. Whereas Stella had taken revenge on Team Apple for harming the little ones, it was what had happened to Aurora that felt unfair.

He thought about what he knew of her. She was dedicated to her machine, Sleeping Thunder, and adored all the framewerks in their own way. She loathed the Cruxi menace for whatever it was they had taken from her and in her moments of virtual death what did he hear? A woman that spoke with words cold as ice, her kind heart broken and shattered in her belief that she had been betrayed by her team. Even if this was a virtual mission, a contest to showcase their skills, wasn't that reaction extreme? But then again, they had betrayed her. Not because Team Apple was manipulative or scheming, but because they had failed her vision. Instead of acting like a team, they were scattered across the winds with no semblance of the plan that Aurora had laid out for them. Arrish felt her pain. He understood that one person alone wasn't enough. That strength and will alone weren't enough. One needed to have both, but more than that, they needed each other. He hoped that would start with Mema-ka falling in line with his plan. Maybe if they could unify, even now, they could still pull victory.

Horst started to move along the wall of the building and its massive footfalls crumbled the virtual stonework with every step. Even so, Arrish moved his framewerk carefully, as though every step would be his last. "Raptor, I want you with me. We're going to advance on Argent Wing and take her down. I want you to lay down suppressive fire while I advance into her. If we're lucky she'll take the bait." He didn't add what both of them already knew; That if Argent Wing didn't fire onto Horst then Raptor was going to be in serious trouble, especially with all the damage the frame had already taken. It was a gambit, but if they could take out Argent Wing, that only left Argo and Cockroach as the final threats.

Horst peaked its head around the corner and could see Argent Wing retreating in the distance. He had to take action now! Before the opportunity was lost and so were their chances at winning at all of this. The unknowns danced along his thoughts like a paranoid fly and he asked himself 'What can Guinevere still do, and how much danger am I in?' and another bubbling thought surfaced. 'Bug is still alive; What am I doing? What if he has a clear shot on me? What if he goes berserk and kills us all?' but he pushed away those thoughts, and those fears. Most of them were useless now anyways, and a soldier couldn't afford to weigh himself down with fear. There was just one other thought, one relevant thought, that surfaced into his mind.

Argo couldn't just be allowed to get away. If someone didn't put down that hound of war they were going to be in trouble, but lucky for them the best man for the job was already there. Still, Arrish couldn't help but think that Griff needed something more, maybe a little push or nudge in the right direction. Revenge... Anger. That was something everyone in the squad, both Mango and Apple could use to fuel their final moments. "Shiva, remember what I said. Argo's dangerous, and more so while wounded. Take her down, soldier. Take revenge. Take her down for every one of us that she's hurt."

[Knight to P24]

Horst came bursting out of the corner in quick motion with the heavy assault rifle raised and aimed in the direction of Argent Wing. The bullets fired in rapid succession with a pap pap pap that echoed across the battlefield. This was for everyone, he thought to himself, this was for everyone that sacrificed themselves up to this moment and when Horst went down, she would go down fighting.

Sparks

Sparks swore softly to himself as the three drones he'd transferred to the Cockroach stopped responding. He had not expected the sheer amount of firepower that came from Sleeping Thunder. Aurora must have overclocked her guns. The explosion of both Sleeping Thunder and Mother Goose was massive, shaking the battlefield -- and did the sim just lag? Jeez. However, the loss of those drones left him with just Epsilon. Through the feed of it he saw Horst come into range. "I suppose we'd better make a move, huh," he said softly. "Dancer, it's time to go. Get the Horst with Epsilon."

"Affirmative." Dancer smoothly flew Epsilon off the roof of the building it was perched on, and put it low to the ground as it headed for Horst. The drone was small, hopefully small enough not to be noticed in the thick of battle. As the drone moved, Sparks moved the Guinevere as well, over and forward just a little, so that the Horst would be in range for a full hack.

"Attention Argent, this is Gwen. I'm going to try to gain control of the Horst. Just be aware."

((movement of Guinevere to N20; moving drone 5 of 6 to P24 and trying to attach to Horst))

The rage. The feedback. Simulated feelings on a artificial matrix. A doll had simulacrums. Not feelings. But were those simulated emotions any less disruptive? The logic was suppressed. System ceased to function. But the commandment endured. The loyalty endured. End this. The man, the creator of the machine commanded. And she obeyed. Despite the risk. Despite the feedback. She could never deny anything to those who had given the gift of life to her.

She could only love them. And nurture them. And sometimes be rough if they felt astray. Her...rival had been no exception. Sometimes feelings were conveyed with actions and not messages. And carpet bombing an entire battlefield with fiery tears had been a clear message. She was angry. She was scared. Even as Stella bore down on them, and mowed them, her heart seemed to crumple a bit.

She exited the situation without blinking. It was simply not the Lilim's nature to easily show signs of distress. Gingerly, she incorporated herself with a stilted movement as she scanned her surroundings. A wisp of red, from someone who had been ejected at the same time. Objective was set and she advanced.

She loomed over the returning Aurora observing, computing. The unfeeling face of the real world made Stella conflicted. She wished to remove and replace it. How come she could not convey the human emotions when they were needed the most? She raised an arm to Aurora, as she saw came to her senses.

"This...unit is sorry." She said, her hand descending softly as the cold metal hands that had once pried a door fluffed Aurora's hair with the same care one would cup a baby chick in one's hands. "There. There." Stella said, her voice coming emotionless. "You did good, pilot Aurora. I'm so proud of your fight. You did good."

She stood for a moment, still. Gauging the reaction. There was someone else she needed to target. Pilot Gene. But it could wait for a moment, yet.

From the moment Aurora let loose all the Sleepy had to offer she never once looked away from Mother Goose. She locked eyes with that would be her end, unbowed, and unyielding.

She did not blink as pain lanced through her throat. Did not falter as a knot of fire twisted in her center. Through pain and fear she did not once blink in the face of her death. As such she did not miss the single banner of her success.

Target: Core compri-

It was only there for a moment, in the corner of her eye. Proof that she would not go alone. It was enough for a fleeting moment of grim satisfaction.

As in the next instant. The was only Pain.

‘She was trapped in the lingering second the world stuttered.’

‘Trapped in the explosive wrath of her own loss.’

‘It burned. It blinded. It consumed.’

‘She did not think. She Burned.’

‘She did not see. She Burned.’

‘She did not understand.’
‘She. Burned

‘She was thankful.’

‘It was not cold’

Aurora returned to the real world violently.

Pain lanced through her as she jerked upright, her body protesting everything. The light, the sound, the movement. Her skin felt raw. Breathing lit fires up and down her throat, and she could not stop the violent dry retching that over took her.

But, tragically honed instincts kept her from actually throwing up. Past experience informing her it would be nothing but bile. Which would only serve to worsen her throat, to the point it might actually tear and bleed. And she would much rather forgo the week of nutrient past that would result in if at all possible.

She kept her breathing controlled as she took careful breaths as her body rebelled with a storm of messy and overstimulated pain signals. It took several long moments where she kept her eyes closed and simply rode out the phantom sensations. Each breath easing the pain further and further.

When the retching finally died off, and she felt like she could move without going light headed from pain. She opened her eyes.

And was momentarily stunned to see the VR Room.

‘The training mission’ She recalled. The memories of everything that had happened settling back in with a disquieting ease.

She flopped back into the VR station’s chair. She did not have the energy to groan or blush in embarrassment.

She had… not forgotten. That would have been too convenient. But she had… lost sight of the fact it was only a VR simulation. Even when the thought occurred to her during the Sim, it slipped away shortly after. She wasn’t used to them being so accurate, wasn’t used to having Sleepy along side her in anything other then true life or death circumstances. And had gotten caught up in it all.

Had actively thought she was about to die. Even if she hadn’t truly embraced that as an outcome.

She was glad ever more so that she had buried her venom earlier. Even as it lingered in the back of her mind. Slithered under her thoughts. The feeling was true, it was merely the context that had been false. ‘but if it happened in training…’

Further thoughts were scattered as a solemn voice spoke next to her.

It was the Lilim Pilot. Mother Goose’s Pilot. Apologizing and praising her.

“No need.” Aurora rasped, the phantom feedback from the particle cannon threatening to close her throat with each word. “To apologize. Your Frame. Incredible.” And it was, Aurora had never encountered something that had required so much of Sleepy’s firepower to take down. Nothing that even needed a fraction of what she and her frame had poured into Mother Goose.

She smiled up at the Lilim. Tired and exhausted as she was. And tried not to lean into the comforting gesture. She failed as much as she succeeded. Both for the same reason. She simply didn’t have the energy to do much just yet.

Lucius

As he watched on at the simulation, the situation didn't dissapoint....well, in terms of spectacle that is. As the titanic Mother Goose Framewerk hammered in on the vulnerable Sleeping Thunder, both unleashed attacks that shone brilliantly in their effectivness. Yet only one of them looked to him as if a second sun had erupted into being right before his very eyes. The Sleeping Thunder and its attack both went down in a blaze of fire and kinetic impacts, and even the Framewerk moving to protect it had been tossed aside by the Mother Goose. No. it would have taken a concentrated effort to relieve the Sleeping Thunder, and yet most of Team Apple was cast about the battlefield separated and disunited in the face of what was going on. The Raptor had little room to retreat to, given the loss of their highest firepower backliner, and the loss of the Angel Zero was only going to further push Team Apple into a corner.

Had the group united against Mother Goose? Well, they'd have had vulnerabilities, but at least their higher firepower would be still online and able to support them in the face of oncoming attacks. They'd have been able to 'circle the wagons', as a very old Earth saying might call it, providing support to each other in a defensive formation that it would be harder to pierce. But, however, that was just his thoughts. He, after all, was literally new to this. Further all this theory and thinking on matters mattered little when the chaos of the battlefield wouldn't always facilitate a 'plan' like that one anywho. In that sense....it was terrifying to think of himself being in the real thing, enough to make it breifly harder to swallow as the thought crossed his mind.

But at any rate, it seemed to his eyes that Mango had quite the opening for a potential comeback. Enemies without a united front, their own smattered about with speedy movement seemingly able to harass or take out isolated targets, and whatever the pink Cockroack and the support-like Guinevere and those drones were trying to do could be among the more clever moves to win them the fight if it panned out well enough. In dire situations, though, he supposed a gamble was something that had to be made when thinking on one's feet. And he....well...they'd have to see how it panned out, but that cry of pain from Logic Driver and her sorry state of affairs had been enough to push him to action without hesitation.

Speaking of people, however, Lucius turned to see the newest VR pods to 'die' in the simulation open.

The first seemed to be a quieter-looking sort, with tousled-looking hair and a stoic-seeming disposition to his eyes. The Angel Zero, he presumed? Something seemed odd about the man, as if dark or more dour, but at the same time less of a sour mood and more simply an...absence? Eh, he was likely reading too much into the man for a first glance, and more importantly-

Two more pods cracked open, the first providing the form of-....a Lilim?! A literal Lilim, just a robot sitting there and operating a Framewerk from a VR pod and everything. She seemed expressionless, and yet simultaneously the stilted movement she made spoke of something else. VR simulations like this gave plenty of feedback to synchronzied pilots, and even for a robot it'd likely be the same he reckoned. Even so, the Lilim seemed more apt to go toward the other pilot to emerge at the same time, which he would assume was Sleeping Thu-

Dry retching movements

closed eyes at first

messy breathing

Now that hit home in a way he didn't have time to think about to remember, emapthy pain groaning in the pit of his stomach and his legs moving quickly as he moved over to the VR pod of what he assumed was Sleeping Thunder's pilot. He didn't doubt the Lilim seemed concerned, but...geez, he wasn't too good at this sort of thing, was he? He'd gotten blown apart trying to help one pilot, just noticed a Lilim was one of his comrades (it was unexpected at least, still had to process that) and yet....he was currently remembering his first time in the VR simulator back home was fresh enough to remember at least.

More importantly-

"Sorry to interrupt. I just wanted to say that both of you have pretty amazing units from what I've seen up there, but...hell the piloting was even better in my book for both of you given the situation. Still...,"

The brown-haired younger man's eyes flicked between the two as he introduced himself, trying to maintain some level of warm friendliness and some sense of professionality alike. He wasn't lying, those two had done a huge number on each other and the spectacular display of firepower had been, in the words of one other cadet he'd met before who had a peculiar accent of his own: glo-ri-us. On that he'd be able to agree, no doubt. At the same time, though, his glance flitted over to Aurora's face as he halfway squatted and leaned over her pod partly, very much human concern leaking into his expression despite attempt to approach them in a more friendly and open manner. That much he couldn't hide. Seeing someone in pain just....crap.

At least he tried to let her have her space in this case, not wanting to get too close. Wanted to be mindful of that much at least, if he thought about how he would have felt about it in his own situation some time ago. His tone would soften, however, a bit as he continued his speaking-

"More importantly, ah, no rush for you to move or anything from the looks of it. Can I grab you some chocolate, water, or a nurse or something? ...Even a barf bag if push comes to shove, though I'd have to improv that one really fast if I'm being honest."

A half-smile crossed his face as he mention of the barf bag, attempting to inject something of a bit of light humor as much as he was trying to be sincere really.

But in hingsight, yeah, how he wished they had given him a barf bag after that first VR sim, though, or a bucket for that matter. Maybe some seasickness meds? Something. Even a warning to not have breakfast on his stomach before his first simulation death ever would have been nice, though apparently he'd been in the 'minority' of pilots his immediate superior had seen have issues after their first VR sim death to 'that' extent. The medic had at least been a touch less judgemental at the very least afterwards...

The more Zel-Ghin talked, the more infuriating he got. Being confident was one thing, but this guy was so arrogant and full of himself that he started looking down on Rhylaen simply for having helped with taking him out of the fight. Rhylaen, who Serah had the utmost respect for as she'd felt firsthand just how disruptive the Electric Dragonfly could be when piloted by skilled hands. The tevrainian defended herself, of course, and Serah had half a mind to share a piece of her own mind, but then Zel-Ghin brought Atty into the fold. He implied that she was leaning entirely too much on him, that squid was a failure in comparison. The girl only barely held herself back as her fist curled up into a ball and she started baring her teeth, wanting to snap at his attitude.

"Why you-!!”

Unfortunately for her, the lieutenant had decided to insert herself into the altercation. She ordered the pilots to spectate in silence, that further disruption would not be tolerated, so all Serah could do was grit her teeth in frustration and swallow the vitriol she'd been on the verge of spewing. Between Griff and Zel-Ghin, and even Bug's pre-fight banter, Serah was starting to wonder if all the guys in this squad were massive jerks. With a deep breath she turned her face away from Zel-Ghin, thoroughly regretting having invited him to come over and watch.

The battlefield, meanwhile, waited for nobody. As Serah turned her attention back, she'd been just in time to see Stella ripping Angel Zero to shreds, wincing as she saw Jake's VR helmet come off in the corner of her vision. If the feedback he received was anything like hers, then that looked like it could've really hurt. Stella and Goose just continued their charge unabated, a fierce battle unfolding between them and the team of Aurora and Sleepy. Aurora was pushing Sleepy's systems to the limit, though Serah had no way to tell how far- the only thing that truly betrayed it was Sleepy's systems failing one after the other. Black smoke oozed out of Sleepy and if Serah wasn't still seething with anger from Zel-Ghin, then she might have felt a twinge of pain in her heart from seeing the humongous beast being pushed so far. Right now, though, she was too distracted by her own fuming.

Still, it didn't take long for Stella and Aurora to exit the simulation in tandem, having taken each-other out. Serah briefly looked their way, but when her gaze fell upon Stella, a sudden pang of guilt mixed into her emotionally riled-up state. Stella wasn't like the rest of them, Serah had gotten that much from their brief time together so far. Stella really cared for everyone in her own way and, thinking about it, the simulation must have felt the most real to her out of anyone. The lilim had been adamant in not throwing Serah right into the lion's den and she'd dismissed that. Even if she had no intention of going out the way she did, the fact remains Serah lied to Stella, telling the lilim that she'd be okay in the end.

It all added to the distress Serah was feeling in the moment, a complex wave of emotions. She'd been feeling good just moments earlier, having had a blast with going all out- but now it dawned on her she really didn't like fighting her friends like this. She didn't like seeing Aurora push Sleepy so far, she didn't like the distress she caused Stella, she didn't even like how brutally she'd killed Rhylaen. Serah looked down at her own hand, palm open, and winced. Though it was clean, in her mind it was smeared red- like she'd rammed a sword right through Rhylaen's gut and had her blood splash all over her. As if she'd done this before, remembering Atty's blade cutting right through the armor of one of her allies. A numb feeling crept up along her arm, followed by a stinging pain- or the memory of one, at least. A feeling like her arm was being crushed by something heavy. Atty had gone berserk, he'd dashed at Logic Diver and he... he...

Serah shook those thoughts. 'Zel-Ghin just riled you up. Don't let it get to you,' she thought to herself in the hope to suppress those intrusive, uncomfortable images. She took a deep breath to steel and calm herself. The simulation must have taken more out of her than she thought if she'd start to daydream about a nightmare like that.

Stella stopped for a moment, letting Aurora said her piece. She clearly was forcing herself to give praise to the Lilim, as she drew her hand to Aurora's lips for the moment being, a index finger softly indicating silence. "Voice, strained. Further talking unadvisable." The lilim droned for a brief moment before answere. "Goose blown up several iterations. Rebuilt. Stronger. Harder." She managed to piece together. She wanted to comfort this girl now, but now her cold hard chassis was unforgiving, and hard.

A new figure entered the perimeter. Her visage turned at him as she coldly assessed the unkown. A threat, perhaps? No, this one did not seem to follow the same patterns as the ones called Griff and Zel-Ghin so after a second, her gaze became slightly less severe. "Excessive input inadvisable to pilot Aurora due to neural feedback loop." Stella mildly chastised Lucius for running out his mouth, but there was an undercurrent of concern, not hostility, in her inflection.

It would take an extended time to discard her armor for the ABT cover that was most helpful in dealing with emotionally distressed humans, so she simply began to scan the room. Water. Blankets. Those mission parameters were acceptable. "Acknowledged mission parameters." She said to Lucius. "Procuring relief." Stella then broke in a brisk sprint, before steading herself before someone.

"Gene, Serah." Stella said, her current task momentarily halted, as a second routine popped up on her mind. "You lied to this unit." She said, sternly, as she tilted her head. "Sanctions are in order." It was when she realized something. "Detecting distress. Recalculating." She added, blabbing, before lifting the modest-sized pilot by her armpits and rushed her back to where Aurora and Lucius were, dropping her nonchalantly next to Aurora.

"Please hug eachother for comfort." She indicated. "Soft and cute parameters within threshold. Serah's punishment is therapy." She said to both Aurora and Serah, before adding. "Resuming material gathering mission." Stella droned, and then zoomed away, at full speed, before doing an impressive frontflip to avoid a certain terminal and a distressed technician in her search for water and blankets. They had to be provided.

Meanwhile, inside the simulation Bug groaned, still wobbling after the intense moments. "...merde. Got me good." He had managed to breathe out after all the ordeal, as he drew his hands to his face and breathed deep, still inside the cockpit. The pain should've disabled him... and yet...he had been through to worse. It was like going back to that time. And yet, for some stupid reason... he was elated. He flipped the general communications channel.

"Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones can not bear it for long; only men endure." Astolfo quoted a line from a certain book about the ancient battle of Stalingrad. "I'll give it to you, Dame Aurora. Très bien. C'est magnifique. That really hurt. Unlike some others who are all bragging." He said, hoping the fallen captain of the other team could hear him. That fierce scream, in fire and violence, cursing at the heavens...he knew about it. He knew about it a lot. Perhaps it was Aurora, not Ava the one he should call Boudica.

Nevertheless, he then switched to his own team channel, his voice much more sombre. The playfulness had almost eroded, subsumed by a certain arousal and battlelust. "My bad, people. This one's on me. I got heavy damage, and I lost the drones I was entrusted. Nevertheless, I will try to keep up. I will go on foot if I have to." Astolfo gritted his teeth. But what he could do with his useless junk of a mech? Taunt? Play bait? Wait for someone to get in range and hack their framewerk? It was when he rested his eyes on some wreckage, and remembering his speech, he rose again. Limping. Crawling. He forgot to close his channel. "Activating Segmented Recombination.Purging all useless parts."

He offered a wry, wicked smile. "Oh glorious fallen. Oh prideful beast. Your master might be gone already, but I shall give you one more chance to serve under me." Astolfo said, his words full of venom as he crawled towards the remains of Squid, his mind racing. The kattai system. If he could seize it. If he could seize the damaged but still in better shape limbs of the creature, he would be back into the fight. He could still make a difference. "Now...Rise from your grave." He then noticed the communications channel still being open, and closed it with a grunt.

It was time to sink or swim. He opened his [Metal Mind]command console, as he gave the inputs with a stern face.

Mema-Ka

The last squad command given by Aurora had been to pass leadership unto him and to relocate to position X-27, before the entire simulation felt the impact of a massive explosion to the west of his location. It didn't take Mema-Ka to step into the role passed on, he already knew his plan of action, and it were not to head to X-27, the Horst and what he assumed were the Shiva currently were engaging the Argo from further to the west were both too far off to make it there. But Aurora had likely not known this, and change was a constant on the battlefield.

Arrish Duval. The pilot of the Horst had made it clear that he was assuming leadership of the squad, or what remained of it, seemingly trying to bypass Aurora's command and in doing so illegitimate Mema-Ka's newly assigned role. While Aurora were no doubt emotionally compromised, as far as he knew, both the Logic, the Horst and the Shiva had abandoned their positions to head eastward, leaving her without a proper frontline. All in all. She had performed well in taking out a large section of the grid herself and anyone that no doubt were in that place. Which limited the amount of places the remaining opponents could be holding out.

"Negative!" Mema-Ka replied swiftly over the team comms towards Arrish. "Cadet Duval! You are out of line! You are now under my command! Are you disregarding the line of command? You may proceed to engage the Argent! However do not pursue it into their territory on your own! The Guinevere is still unaccounted for! This is not the time for further folly!" Mema-Ka hurriedly replied and then moved out towards the Argent's direction with Elora on the back. "Logic! Cover me. Horst! Supression fire request approved! Shiva! Proceed north and collect the Logic! If Argo remains at large, lure it into the open field and fire upon it. It no longer have it's primary ranged weaponry and would be forced to get into the open! Logic is designated as second in command, over!"

Mema-Ka set his laserdrones sight at the Argent Wings, the laserdrones were latched on the Raptor and tried to shoot down the Argent. Raptor uses attack drones to try attack the Argent Wings. [Attack Drones]. Four different barrels were better odds at hitting than one after all. He readied a [Free reaction shot] with his [Marker Light] [Damage], ready to shoot down the Argo if it would somehow chase after them, or if another shot would open up. He felt slightly annoyed with Arrish, while he didn't know the man, he couldn't help but feel the man was out to claim some form of glory. Glory wasn't something which could ever be obtained on a battlefield to the older twin.

Raptor uses [Leaper] and moves to [R-23] with Logic Diver on it's back.

Griff

"Nooooo! Aurora! SHIIIIIT!" Griff yelled out as the massive explosion caused the entire simulation to momentarily lag. He saw the Goose and the Sleeping Thunder to vanish in a blast of light. Another comerade lost. This time however he remembered they were still in a simulation, possibly due to the lag he felt reminding him again. But it felt so real. He had failed to protect the Sleeping Thunder and Elora was still in need of his help.

He had spotted and attacked the Argo, he felt a moment of shame, having seized what he considered an opportunity to damage Argo. It made him feel bad. When his desire to support and help his allies, but at the same time his warrior core was yelling at him to honorably fight his opponent one on one. But Elora needed him. Arrish was somewhere aswell yelling out orders. So was that Mema-Ka guy. So they lost one commander and now got two? Griff received two different kind of orders hurled his way, as if he wasn't already abit split on what to do.

"Uhh! Roger that commanders!"

Minerva's Argo were heavily damaged however, and while he would have loved to duel her and get his revenge. It somehow… didn't feel sportsman like to do that now after his sneak attack on her. It just wasn't fair. She was like him. A proud warrior. He had a hard pill to swallow. Finishing her and then following what that Meme-guy was saying. After all Aurora had said he would be the leader? But Arrish was his friend- Oh gods. Was Arrish his friend? But they had not even gotten to the part where they would compare biceps, share a sweaty towel or watch wrestling together or dress up as the Galactic Rangers. Those thoughts would have to wait. Too many thoughts were making things difficult. He quickly made a mental list.

Beat up Minnie. Head north to find Meme-guy and Arrish. Rescue Elora. Then find nerd guy and beat his ass with Elora! Then claim victory and celebrate the simulation good times with all the team and steak! He would do what both commanders said and do everything! After all. He was the Griffman! The man who would somehow pull through!

To strike down Minerva in a manner like this wasn't something he would be proud of. He couldn't even approach her afterwards with a cheeky grin afterwards. A bitter victory if anything. It felt like cheating. He hated doing that. But he hoped his sword would finish the job, a warrior lived by the sword and died by the sword. At least he respected her that much as a warrior to not humiliate her.

"Sorry about this Minnie!" Griff yelled out and swung his [Trillium blade] towards the Argo's already damaged core, then moved further north taking aim with his [Marker Light] [Damage] towards the Argo in case the blade wouldn't do the trick. He however resisted using his shining fingers, as he needed to keep them intact to get Elora. He kept moving north, spotting the incoming Horst and the Raptor at the same time and the Argent Wings ahead.

Griff who was accustomed to multitasking in his framewerk locked on with his [Slag Cannon] at Argent Wings and tried to shoot it down. "It's the big chest lady! Take this you stupid Argent!" Griff yelled out towards Ava, despite her not being able to hear him, and then smiled as he saw the Logic being carried by the Raptor.

"Elora! Elora! I got you! I told you! I'll protect you!" He said in a hopeful happy voice, then readied his [Slag Cannon] again with his [Free Reaction Shot] would Argo prove to still be functioning, or the Argent somehow making it through, or whomever still remained. Griff had not seen his archenemy yet. Sparks. The one man who was not allowed to defeat him under any circumstances. Nerds couldn't beat jocks! Jocks beat nerds! It was the natural order of things! He knew this from his anime wrestling shows. Also.. why did the Logic remind him of a rugby ball? If Elora could leave it and get into the Shiva with him, then he could kick it at someone's face. Also where the hell were Buggyboy?

He used his extra pair of arms that held the shining fingers and tried to take the Logic from the Raptor.

The pain...the absolute physical pain. That's something no soldier, pilot or anyone involved in war will never forget.

But if there's anything Jake did learn...it was the mental...the emotional pain...to him, that hit way harder than any physical pain. And it didn't take him very long to know that even very early of his life. One of the reasons why he turned out the way he did.

So even though it was a simulation, being torn up by Mother Goose was a fate he accepted quietly...

...

...

...

...and then the simulation helmet came off of Jake's head.

He merely opened his eyes and despite the "pain" feedback, took a quick look around...in his nearby proximity, he noted both the pilots of the Mother Goose and Sleeping Thunder plus another he didn't recognize...possibly the last minute "Team Banana" pilot.

But seeing Cadet Aurora meant that he failed to protect Sleeping Thunder even though Cadet Stella...Jake knew going one-on-one with Mother Goose was a bad strategy but he knew he had to at least stall time for Aurora to get a shot off...which she most likely did. But he also remembered the "data" on her. Despite the lack of personal history, it was made clear she knew who "friend from foe" was but tended to "drop the hammer" way too hard with her weapon customization.

And now that Jake thought about it, he wondered what exactly did Cadet Aurora did just after his virtual death.

Again, despite the feedback of the physical pain he felt due to sync, Jake stood up and even picked up his pilot helmet which was still nearby on the ground. Putting in on, he started doing some basic stretching to try to lessen the pain he was feeling...

Minerva

Minerva's relentless barrage suddenly came into an abrupt halt as she felt danger approaching her. Turning at the last second, she narrowly dodged a missile, activating her thrusters she managed to dodge another pair but in the end...

She got hit and hit again even as she tried weaving her way out of the pain Argo is taking from what could figure out as the Thunder Waking Up. She wouldn't be able assess the results of the duel between the titans as she is busy assessing herself in the aftermath.

A leg and an arm down, main booster close to overheating, various damages on the frame, gattling gun des...

It is clear to her, Argo is on her its legs. That was a first, the amount of times the Cruxi even touched her can barely be counted by her fingers after all. No, not the time to be thinking about that.

Taking a deep breath, she turned to stare at her opponent a charging Shiva, who disabled her Gattling Gunn earlier. There seems to be some form of hesitation in his attack, is he pitying her?

"I don’t need it! Minerva shouted from her cockpit as she commanded Argo to do something no one will expect her to do.

To charge.

Down a leg and arm but with thrusters still burning, Argo met the charge head on with surprising speed, using her skills to keep the balance as she charges.

She only had one shot...

Argo would be covered by the light on shining fingers, she could felt her head splitting as the Framewerk made limbs of light. But it should be enough.

She should be enough.

And in Argo's hand is not a broken gun but a lance of light pointed at Griff's body as she tries to kill Death before it kills her.

She could smell the copper in her blood as felt it tricking down her nose. Whether it's just simulation or actually happening on her body, she wasn’t really sure

But if despite everything it's not enough.

Her defense system, releasing what it has left as she tries to cling to Shiva trashing, trying to tear it apart in her last moments. Like a dog fallen into madness, all it could think is killing it's master's killer.

Arrish Duval

“Hope not ever to see Heaven. I have come to lead you to the
other shore; into eternal darkness; into fire and into ice.”

'Seriously, you're going to double down on taking command when Aurora's death wish order was emotional dogwash? You've gotta be kidding me, Mema-ka.'

'God forbid you have an original thought in your head, Mema-ka. Oh, wait. Lets put Elora in command if you go down. Brilliant one there, Genius.'

'You're an idiot, Mema-ka and you're going to get us all killed. How fucking dare you talk to me about folly when you're an ambitious fool.'

'we're not going to survive if we fall apart like this. We need to stay unified. You can't be ambitious like this, not now. Think. Think!'

'We need to unify, and stay together. We're going to fall apart if we can't stay together. Calm down, Arrish. Think for once.'

. . .

'Fine. Lead us down into the darkest circles of hell, Virgil.'

Arrish's thoughts coalesced through various degrees of anger before centering on a cold and icy point. No matter what he thought or felt he deserved it was all a bunch of nothing to the ultimate end goal. If Team Apple was going to survive this encounter it needed to be unified and held together. Not with the cheap metaphorical tape of hope or the hot fires of passion, but through the steel of unity. He put aside all his thoughts and desires and through an angry voice would reply in kind.

"Alright, Mema-ka. I hear you loud and clear. You're in charge here, so lead us through hell, commander." He wondered if Mema-ka would be their metaphorical Virgil and lead them through the dark circles of hell. 'Heh, I guess this isn't exactly an inferno. Team Mango are no devils, but they fight like one...'

Arrish then saw the drone coming for him and tried to course correct, but it was too late. He pulled his assault rifle towards the direction of the oncoming drone but it was highly unlikely to hit something that small without aiming for it. He held his breathe and began to move his framewerk in the opposite direction but there was no time to clear it and move away. He cursed himself for being so careless and getting lost in thought.

'God fucking dammit.'

Ava Lane

"That's...some serious firepower," Ava muttered as she saw the aftermath of Sleeping Thunder's attack, which was enough to even cause a glitch in the simulation.

She could not help but smile.

At the moment, Sleeping Thunder's devastating attack was bad for her, as it had completely shifted the tide of the battle. But frankly, Ava could not care less. Even registering the dent in one of her frame's wings could not dampen the glee that was almost building up inside her, imagining that firepower turned on the Cruxi.

This was, after all, a simulation. Who won or lost here did not matter. It only mattered that Sleeping Thunder had the ability to utterly destroy the Cruxi on the real battlefield.

This hellish landscape that Sleeping Thunder created was the least the Cruxi deserve.

If they could deploy Sleeping Thunder and kill scores of Cruxi, then perhaps finally, he would—

It was then that Argent Wing received a transmission from Sparks, which brought her back to her senses, as Ava saw multiple enemies converging on her location.

She also registered some incoming communication from Bugs, making an overly dramatic speech about 'rising from your grave', though she ignored that for now, as she, of all people, probably should not comment on a form of delusion. Even if hers was not a delusion of grandeur.

"Acknowledged. Will try to make some diversion," Ava replied, shaking her head to clear her thoughts from lapsing back on that delusion.

Making a snap decision, she charged in Horst's direction.

Originally, she intended to make a tactical retreat upon finding herself surrounded by enemies. However, now that Guinevere was attempting to take control of Horst, Ava decided to create a diversion.

As she got close to Horst while attempting to dodge its shot, the Argent Wing raised its vibrobalde, appearing about to confront Horst directly...before it suddenly pivoted with great agility, making a tactical retreat as planned.

Argent Wings was designed with ambush and 'hit-and-run' tactics in mind, after all. There was no need to fight in a head-to-head battle, Ava thought.

If they chased after her...well, that would leave them open to the rest of her team on the other direction. If they did not give chase...then it would give her a chance to reposition and strike again at an opportune time.

Aurora was more than a little confused at the mannerisms of the Lillim pilot. And before Aurora could begin to inform them that she was fine, she was off. ‘Surely that one is unique even amongst Lilim, they have to be...’ She mused to herself as she carefully pushed herself up and off the VR’s stations chair.

Just as Aurora had gotten to her feet, a feat that wasn’t as shocking as it might have seemed; Her legs were fine after all, Sleepy’s legs hadn’t been broken after all. The strange Lilim returned to deposit a more familiar face. Before racing away once again.

“Hello.” Aurora would greet Atty’s pilot with a smile and a wave. Her name was sadly out of reach, but that was fine. She was comfortable enough in saying that she and the younger girl were on good terms. The name would settle soon.

“Impressive.” Aurora would tell the other girl. Only to give her a flat look. “And. Reckless.” She would only hold the look for a moment before letting a small smile break free, as she nudged their shoulder.

”Just water. No need. For medical.” She would answer the new face at last, which with the way the Lilim rushed off Aurora figured that water would be soon arriving. “Seems. Handled.” She would add with a shrug and a half gesture towards the direction that Goose’s pilot had taken off.

The sound of her name pulled her attention towards the simulation’s display. To which she couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the praise sent her way, or more accurately the derision implied towards the others. At the very least that pilot seemed to be a spirited one. And she let out a small huff at his callout as he began doing something with the wreckage of Squid.

She turned her attention over to her team instead. Her levity becoming short lived as she heard Mema-Ka and Arrish bicker for a moment over second in command. ‘Even in death, they still refuse to listen.’ She shook her head. There was nothing he could do about it now. Just make note of it and move on.

“I. Aurora. You?” She would ask the newcomer. He was kind enough to come check up on her after all, she could at least introduce herself.

She kept most of her attention towards the Sim. It was clear that Ava and Guinevere had a plan, some communication she must have missed. ‘That’s where you had been hiding. You had been in range too…’

And the clash between Shiva and Argo was also heating up. And she had to admit she was impressed. Argo had been put through the ringer, but it was still moving. And if she was right, it was far from harmless.

Serah was clearly lost in thought even as she continued to observe the battle, her eyes looking beyond what's on the screen. Cracks in her cheery demeanor were starting to show, given the rather serious look on her face. She didn't really know what to think- the 'nightmare' she'd just had bugged her. It was the same mid-battle, with the spider-like frame she recalled. Even before that, she'd mistaken Minerva for someone else briefly. Something gnawed at her. It bugged her. She was-

-suddenly picked up by a big robot lady.

"Wait- uh, huh??”

Despite Stella having the same subtlety as the rocket-powered hammer Mother Goose wielded, Serah was still caught off guard by being picked up like a bag of potatoes. She'd not noticed the robot lady having come over and noticed her distress, and quite frankly, she had a different reason to be distressed right now. "Stella what are you do- whahuh?!”

Without being able to get a word of protest in, Serah was nyoomed over to Aurora and Lucius in the blink of an eye. Stella put the girl back on her feet before she could even readjust herself to the new company.

"Please hug eachother for comfort," the Lilim suddenly said. "Soft and cute parameters within threshold. Serah's punishment is therapy."

And with that, Stella rushed out of the room to go get... something. Serah blinked a few times, dumbfounded at what had just happened. Then, she turned her head. There was an Aurora and one as-of-yet-unknown-to-her Banana in this spot. An Aurora who, without missing a beat, broke the ice with a simple “Hello.”

There was some dry humor to be found in having that be how Serah was greeted, but at the same time a sense of relief washed over her as the girl soon forgot all about the tension she was feeling. Matching Aurora's smile with her own, Serah greeted her in turn: "Hi Aura!”

The next few words out of Aurora's mouth were as short and to the point as her greeting was. A point that made Serah sheepishly scratch the back of her head, given it was about the stunt she'd pulled in the simulation. "Ahaha... yeah, maybe. Rhylaen and Griff had my number the whole time... I figured I had to do something to break you guys' formation. I think Stella's upset with me about it... but it was kind of the best idea I could come up with at the time. My team did ask me to take out Electric Dragonfly if I could.”

After the little exchange, Aurora turned her attention to the boy next to the two of them. Serah was quick to follow. "Oh yeah! I haven't seen you before either,” she'd say, and if Lucius had been paying attention, he'd notice this was the same voice that said she had seen him earlier. "So... you're the new person? Like, uh, what was your name... Mr. Banana Split?"

...That wasn't right, was it? Oh well, she'd blurted it out anyway.

She turned, scanned the room and then pointed at Jake, who seemed to be stretching. "I thought you were that guy over there! I saw him a little bit ago... or, well his helmet anyway,” she blabbered on and on. And, with a lightbulb springing in her head, she'd just realized she never introduced herself either. "Oh, right! I'm Serah, by the way. Its nice to meet you!”

As Stella began to fuss about over the disconnected pilots in the VR chamber, Ritsu became visibly annoyed. She raised a finger about to scold her. “Cadet-SR 45-” She managed to speak before a dull sound could be heard: it was Lorenzo, who had lightly struck the floor with the tip of his cane.
“Lieutenant…let the Lilim proceed.”
Ritsu adjusted her glasses. “But Executive Officer-!”

“Taking care of others is her current prime directive. Obstructing her would only cause more distractions in the long run. Besides,” he glanced at Aurora, who visibly dry retched after her disconnection from virtual reality, “I’d rather not have pilots puking up their guts…Could stain my coat,” he added, his callous nature as apparent as ever. As he said this, Liisa walked over to Aurora, and took out something from her pocket: it seemed to be a small vial filled with bluish liquid. The vial was labeled “Buran-X”. ”She offered it to Aurora with a kind expression.
“Please take this,” she spoke in a monotone voice.
“Ingesting the contents has a 98.5% probability of immediately alleviating symptoms of nausea caused by VRNFS, virtual reality neural feedback syndrome.” Stella, using her on-board navigational computer that scanned through Solaire's map, quickly located a nearby supply station, where emergency supplies including flasks of water and rolled up thermal blankets were stored.

Ritsu’s eyes narrowed for a short moment as she watched the shorter Lilim join the taller one with nursing duties past the silently stretching Jake, before her eyes turned softer, and she yielded. “Very well then.” She turned to the others. “You may now speak. However, you are to strictly avoid bothering those who are focused on observing the battle.”

Meanwhile, in the virtual reality, team Apple had come under a crisis with the chain of command, as Mema-Ka and Arrish struggled for the position of commander after Aurora’s departure from the mission. Horst rounded the corner with a stylish slide, before kicking off from a crouch and bounding across the battlefield like a faun of war, Heavy Assault Gun brought to bear, ready to roar out as heavy caliber ammunition was unloaded in Argent Wings’ direction.

But as the weapon was lifted, and the trigger was about to be pulled, Arrish saw a lone droid speeding from the north, courtesy of Sparks and his galling Guinevere. He turned, ready to shoot Dancer down…But it was already too late, as the parasitic machine swooped from under the Frame’s heavy legs, and latched on to the red terror’s back. Nanomachine tubes injected by the drone raced through the seams in his armor, and interfaced directly with the Frame’s operating system, infecting it with a Dancer Virus that quickly gained administrative privileges of the Framewerk, and ASSUMED DIRECT CONTROL. As a result, Horst was left shaking in place violently due to conflicting orders, as if possessed. However, now that Guinevere was performing the hacking protocol through the drone and sending out commands to the proxy unit via electromagnetic waves, his Frame’s cloaking could not perfectly maintain its camouflage, resulting in a faint ripple in space that a sharp eye could see, like the alien in Predator.

However, Mema-Ka was not deterred despite Raptor’s poor condition. “Affirmative!” Elora could be heard responding in comms; the young pilot was quite shocked to see the simulation stutter at Sleeping Thunder and Mother Goose’s mutually assured destruction, and for a moment wondered if the VR was going to crash due to a buffer overflow from all the missiles and explosions that spread like rainwater across the simulacrum city. But it didn’t matter; team Apple’s efforts had given Logic Diver another chance to fight, and she would not squander it. She also accepted the suddenly given position of second in command: while not a position Elora was comfortable with, the adrenaline spiking through her won over any nervousness, and she responded with a sharp “Roger!”

Raptor dove to the north at Argent Wings, the Attack Drones activated on the Frame, like turret emplacements on a fighter plane. They began pouring out laser cannon fire in a fusillade of vibrant fire: Argent Wings managed to dodge fire from two of the drones, and ended up struck by the two other drones, damaging the Frame’s armor, causing it to turn red hot and melt at parts. As Ava averted confrontation and continued with her hit-and-run tactic, Mema-Ka took the opportunity as a [Supporter], and took a reaction shot with the damage mode of Marker Light. The rifle’s shots, while not as potent as the Heavy Assault Gun, found purchase through the melted back armor, and several rounds managed to hit one of the Frame’s Microburst Monopropellent Thrusters, causing it to pour out smoke in a trail as it failed to function. [Speed reduced by 2, 30% reduced maneuverability].

As Raptor swooped in to attack Argent Wings, Elora leaned over with the Logic Diver, Automatic Battle Rifle hefted and ready to fire. She observed as the one-winged Frame dashed, and began shooting. Elora’s gaze intensified, as she focused her every shot: they struck Argent Wings in the forearm of her free arm right in the seams of the armor, severing it from the elbow joint, resulting in a temporary drop to her agility (Speed further reduced by 2 for the next turn, total -4 Speed).

Ava’s gambit seemed a success, as she slid behind the eastern megabuilding. However, thanks to Elora’s previous data collection, the Frame was seen through the building by the remaining team Apple members. “She’s coming from the south side!” Elora warned the others, and prepared for the Vibroblade-wielding warrior’s waltz, hoping Logic Diver and Raptor would manage to take her on despite their Frames barely holding on.

On the west side, Griff and Minerva found themselves facing off with their crippled Framewerks, the Shiva less disabled than Argo. Yet, the golden-clawed huntress would not go quietly into the night. She activated the Extreme Boosters, and smoke blew out in an explosive steam as the malfunctioning machine launched the Frame like a jet, managing to steer towards the right direction [Extreme Boosters resisted malfunction]. Further emboldened as she remembered Bug’s inspiring words, with her willpower as fuel she summoned a spear of pure energy from the stump of the Frame’s broken arm with Shining Fingers. The strain of holding the construct was vigorous, and sweat trickled down Minerva’s brow. But she would only need to hold on for but a few microseconds, as she let pure instinct guide her: Athena’s successor, a demigod questing for the honor befitting a heroine deified by the galaxy, would now begin her First Labor of defeating a monster called Shiva.

The valiant pauldon-heavy Frame was about to swing with the Trillium blade, only for the swing to be met with Argo’s energy lance. Sparks flew as the weapons grinded against each other, until finally the lance dissipated, but not before causing the blow to be deflected and miss.

Shiva followed up with a damaging burst of Marker Light fire, only for it to be partially deflected with a burst of the Hornet Point Defense System shots colliding with the rounds, allowing Argo one last chance to deliver an uppercutting slash into Shiva’s torso: the deadly claws, assisted by the Extreme Boosters, punched through Shiva’s heavy armor and into the cockpit, the index finger claw having struck from under Griff’s seat and slicing the pilot, but not before the final Marker Light shot, in such close proximity, pierced through the plating damaged by Sleepy’s missiles, and right into her cockpit in turn, blasting the pilot right through with a Howitzer-sized round.

[Minerva disconnected]
[Griff disconnected]

As the battle was approaching it’s last moments, Bug’s Cockroach crawled through the proverbial nuclear fallout, the heavily damaged chassis ejecting the dangling, broken limbs thanks to the modular Segmented Recombination, gaining precious maneuverability for a mere jet-assisted torso. With a desperate, determination-filled speech, Big then dashed towards Squid’s still-smoking wreck. Upon physical contact, the [Machine Mind] performed a system scan. To his elation, he found that while the cockpit of the Frame had been utterly demolished at the top, the Kattai system lying underneath was still in one piece. He hacked into the system, remotely activating it.

As a result, Squid’s Frame began to glow. Then, nanomachines began transforming both the Squid and Cockroach, transferring most of the metallic mass into the weaponized limbs the Framewerk was most famous for into the Cockroach’s back as a weapon system. This resulted in Cockroach being equipped with three full-sized combat tentacles on the left and lower right, and a half-sized left tentacle on the upper right, the nanomachines having been unable to fully assemble the broken limb. Still, three and a half limbs were more than a single man in a broken chassis of a Frame could have ever hoped for.

Against all odds, Bug was still in the fight.
