Three decades ago, London was stolen by bats. Dragged deep into the earth by the Echo Bazaar. The sun is gone. All we have is the gas-light of Mr Fires. But Londoners can get used to anything. And it's quiet down here with the devils and the darkness and the mushroom wine. Peaceful.

Or so it would appear at a first glance anyway. It might not exactly be the case, not after that masquerade.

Oh hello, it is you! Welcome to the interest check, delicious friend! ...what, you are telling me greeting people in that manner will weird them out rather than draw them in? Maybe you are right. Just know that it is most common of judgemental hats to greet people like that. Not that I was from Polythreme. Or a hat. But I am getting ahead of myself, am I?

So, I am planning to set up an RP set in the Neath, a most interesting locale provided to us by the great Failbetter Games (FBG for short). Their games at the moment include Sunless Seas, Sunless Skies and the eldest, the very Fallen London I am drawing most from, though we may end up leaving the city at some point it will always remain the "home base" so to speak. We'll be back. After all, we couldn't stray too far from the Bazaar. What is the Bazaar, you ask? A good question. Nobody really knows, except perhaps the Masters. We are quite sure it's a sentient thing though.

Whether you know much of the setting beforehand or not is not important here. While experience is always a nice tool to possess, I will be doing my best to give enough information to give anyone the chance to participate! The most important things are as follows: It's victorian era England with gothic and perhaps Lovecraftian undertones. Everything takes place below ground, next to the mighty Unterzee the size of Europe. Surface is deadly. Death here in the Neath is not exactly permanent, though most certainly inconvenient.

What the RP itself will be about, well that is a mystery. No, not that I wouldn't know. But that's for our characters to find out. It all started from a rather intimate masquerade ball, no more than thirty people present. And when it came time for the host to share the reason of the gathering, the sudden appearance of not only Mr. Wines but another cloaked figure just as well would draw everyone's attention. Why would the Masters gather this ragtag bunch together?

So, in case of interest, you know what to do! In case of questions, follow that procedure but leave a question instead of the usual message!

Now, I'll just press this "Create Topic" button here before I question my ability to write an interest check once again...

What breadth of employment may we all sway from?

Career paths are many. From the campaigners among Revolutionaries, through pickpockets on the alleys of Spite all the way to lecturers in the University. Choices are many, but the most notable of professions (Monster-Hunter, Crooked Cross, Glassman, Midnighter, Correspondent and Licentiate) should not be among the starting characters, though they may encounter fellow Londoners practising said duties. My planned character is a poet (Author) from the court of her enduring majesty, for example. If you had an example in mind, I could easily tell how feasible it is.

For reference, these are the current professions available to player characters in the browser game: http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Profession You need not be limited to them in this RP, but they provide a good base of things to start thinking from.

What about a white rapper from Dunwich?

I am unsure how well that and Victorian era mesh together, to be completely fair.

@Hekazu Another Fallen London fan! God, I’m always a sucker for this sort of stuff. I had tried to make an FL rp a while back, and it sort of flickered out, sadly. I’d be really interested in something like this.
Would it be okay if I had a character with an career that’s not among the traditional FL careers? A private investigator, for instance? I’d probably join with a Correspondant either way, haha.

Ouch, sad to hear that the earlier attempt did not work out quite that well. Let us hope this attempt goes down a little better, yes? Hopefully we will be in Mr. Pages's good graces.

As for the careers, sure. Custom ideas are fine by me! I've decided that people are not supposed to be of the most notable professions from the start though, so Correspondent would be something one would have to reach during the RP itself. Nonetheless, welcome!

Tenatively interested. I assume a devil character would be off-limits as the characters oughta be the up-and-coming street-level gentlemen of no renown and with but a few particularly distinguishing qualities?

Would you allow one to play as a highly hopeful and irresponsible Benthic student that yearns hotly for knowledge of a more esoteric and forbidden nature but whose competence is currently not quite enough to mark him as a true scholar of correspondence?

If that's a no, what about simply a dangerous and ambitious person posessing a nigh-on preternatural potential for violence and looking to quite literally carve out a legacy of fame and wealth out of the streets and citizens of London?

@Hekazu Hopefully! I’ll go ahead and sacrifice all my illegal texts in hopes of gaining his favor, haha.

And that’s fine with me. The progression of careers IC makes a lot of sense. c:
Would it be okay if my private investigator had some awareness of Parabola and the Fingerkings from the start? Or nah?

Some awareness is well and good, just don't go overboard with it

Devils are strongly discouraged. We would need to have an extensive discussion about their role and that may be more trouble than it would be worth. The Benthic student plan on the other hand is entirely fine. As is the Dangerous fellow.

In any case, I do believe we have about enough people for me to start working on the actual thread. I'll see if I cannot get it online tomorrow. I've a lot of lore dumping to do though, so if I take a bit longer you'll excuse me, right?

Hi there! Kind of had to suppress a little squeak of excitement when I saw this, as I have been badly missing an opportunity to use some characters of mine I made for a previous Fallen London RP.

With that in mind, would a zailor hailing from the Chelonate work out? Loves harpoons, fermented shark blood, scars, and worshipping Storm. I was playing a little bit too much Sunless Sea when I wrote her up.

Alternatively I also have some oddly well-to-do honey addict who has a devil acting as a benefactor.

I haven't really paid much attention to the Chelonate, but it shouldn't be much of an issue to have one around. I do have a preference for native Londoners though, it's the place I know best. Honey-addict whose soul is seemingly under the attention of devils is fine with me as well.

Do our characters have to be human in this RP?

Humans are the default, Tomb Colonists and Clay Men are okay if you know what you are doing, Drownies are kinda pushing it and any other races are strongly discouraged and will require a fair bit of convincing.
