Basically my current issue is that I have a character concept for what I want her to be and do but am unsure how to put it together into a broader person. The main reason being that everyone here went for grimdark trauma and I... well I don't really do that sort of thing character vise. So I have to find a way to make my ideas fit and not be jarringly out of place.

You don't have to go grimdark to make an interesting character.

I'd love to give an example I made but I'm a professional badcharacter creator so I can't.

Point is, don't focus too much on giving grimdark backstory.
The present/future is grimdark enough for the crew.

I wouldn't really call Shawna's backstory "grimdark". Maybe a bit grim or a bit dark, but not grimdark.

This doesn’t seem like the kind of organization that needs an elaborate backstory. Your character might just want to blow up robots because it seems like fun. Or joined because didn’t like other life prospects. Maybe just looks up to the sunderers. Or it gives her an opportunity to use deadly arsenal she would not have access to otherwise.

Actually that is a viable case and a very viable case. Why be a police officer when you can join the Sunderers and use cool stuff?
